Grafton, Illinois!
Grafton’s prime location on the river necessitated a boat construction industry. Frank Rippley first came to Grafton in 1876 and bought an existing stove and tin business. He expanded the business to include a hardware and general Imagine if you will a riverfront packed with manufacturing companies, mills, quarries, loading docks and riverboat traffic. In the early 1800s, James Mason purchased the land that is now Grafton, with a vision for riverfront development and trade at a key location between Chicago and St. Louis. Mason began building structures for the first general store and other businesses. In 1836, two years after Mason’s death, the town was surveyed and platted by his widow Sarah and his brother Paris, and was named Grafton, in honor of James Mason’s birthplace in Massachusetts. HISTORY OF GRAFTON Resting under the Mississippi River bluffs, quarrying was also a lucrative industry in Grafton, at one time employing nearly 2,000 German and Irish immigrants. Tons of magnesian limestone was found here, making the quarries one of the richest and most extensive of the town’s resources. Grafton stone was used locally to construct buildings and homes, and it was also transported to St. Louis for use in structures, such as the Old Cathedral and the Eads Bridge. merchandise store, an undertaking business, livery stable and cooper shop. Rippley Manufacturing Company built barges, towboats, skiffs and ferries. Most notable in the boating manufacturing industry was Pete Freiman of Grafton. Freiman designed and built the “Frieman Skiff,” which was known to every fishing settlement along the river. The boat manufacturing business was one of the only industries that transitioned into the new century, however, the last manufacturer closed its doors in the early 1970s. We hope that you will spend some time with us exploring the history of Grafton. Historic sites are noted on the map with the lighthouse icon. A historic walking tour guide can be picked up at Grafton City Hall and the Grafton Visitor Center. Similar to the rise and fall of industry, the unpredictable nature of the rivers has always been a part of the rhythm of life in Grafton. The community’s first major encounter with the rising waters occurred in 1844. The Flood of 1993 proved to be the most devastating in the town’s history, reaching a record 38.2 feet. The community pulled together, fought the swelling waters of the river, dried itself off and rebuilt the city around them to become the bustling tourist town they are today. The lighthouse found on the riverfront stands as a symbol of the resilience and determination of this historic river town. The Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway bends and curves with the river, winding its way to the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers in Grafton, Illinois. Experience the hometown flavor and down-toearth qualities of this real river town as you meander along the Main Street browsing the shops for unique gifts and antiques. Pull up a seat on the decks or patios at one of the many restaurants to indulge in the local flavors. Or, spend the afternoon with a glass of wine in hand at one of the local wineries offering a relaxing river view. Bed & breakfast inns and guest houses scattered throughout the town offer views of the river and a home away from home. With barges just a stone’s throw away on the river, you are guaranteed to gain a new perspective of what living on the river really means. CELEBRATING LIFE ON THE RIVER If you are looking for outdoor recreation, the Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail, stretching 25 miles from Alton to Pere Marquette State Park, runs through the heart of downtown with views of the river. Just north of town, Pere Marquette State Park is the largest state park in Illinois, with more than 8,000 acres of land to explore. Hiking trails, fishing docks, horseback riding or the perfect spot for a picnic can be found within the borders of the park. For those who like to flounder with the fish, water recreation is a favorite for visitors to Grafton. On the riverfront, visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, boats and jet skis to hit the water trails along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Family water recreation can also be found in the summertime at Raging Rivers Water Park in Grafton. Sail down the bluffs on a waterslide with a full view of the Mississippi River while you play. First class boating facilities can be found at the Grafton Harbor, a full service marina offering both transient slips for short stays and long-term docking. For more information on Grafton and surrounding communities, please contact the Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-258-6645 or visit us at www.VisitAlton.com. Unique festivals add to the flair of this river town. Plan to be in Grafton each June and celebrate life on the river at the Great Rivers Towboat Festival. Treasure hunters will not want to miss out on the Riverside Flea Markets held in the Historic Boatworks the fourth weekend of the month from March through October. The fall season beckons travelers to enjoy the burst of colors along the byway and take part in the annual Grafton Art Fair and the Grafton Rendezvous. And, as many towns begin to hibernate for the winter, Grafton comes alive with eagle watchers eager to catch a glimpse of the hundreds of American Bald Eagles that migrate through the region from late December through mid-February. Grafton offers visitor delights during every season of the year. Welcome to Grafton, Illinois!
