STICKLEY
HISTORY
For over a century, the Stickley name has been synonymous
with excellence in the furniture industry. Als Ik Kan or “to the
best of my ability” was the phrase and principle that Stickley
Furniture was founded on and still uses to guide them today.
The original Stickley brothers made it their mission to create
honest handcrafted furniture that was strong, durable, and
timeless. Even after the Stickley brothers passed away, Stickley
Furniture remained a family business. E.J. Audi had been the
top seller of Stickley furniture for years and his son, Alfred
Audi, and his wife, Aminy, did not want to see the Stickley
name disappear into history. They purchased the factory from
Leopold Stickley’s widow. Today, Alfred Audi’s wife, Aminy
Audi, and son, Edward Audi, continue the Stickley legacy.

Hubert Jordan founded the company in 1945 in Pasadena,

HISTORY
Theodore Alexander’s founder, Paul Maitland Smith, has
been famous for fine furniture manufacturing since the 1950s,
during which he built a strong reputation in the world of
antiques and reproduction furniture. Later he moved to Hong
Kong, which made it easier to acquire materials from Hong
Kong, Thailand, China, and the Philippines. In 1996, Paul
founded Theodore Alexander.
Now, Theodore Alexander is known around the world for
being one of the finest manufacturers of high-end furniture
and is one of the largest manufacturers in South East Asia.
Theodore Alexander artisans handcraft over 4,000 unique
designs that are made to last a lifetime.

STRESSLESS
HISTORY
Introduced in Sykkylven, Norway in 1971, Stressless quickly
became renowned for creating the most comfortable seating
in the world. Stressless’ beginning stems from two traditions
that became intertwined: farming and furniture. Sykkylven
was a small town known primarily for its farms. Firstborn sons
would inherit the family farms, leaving the second born sons
to their own creativity to support their families. Through necessity
and ingenuity, the second born sons of farming families
began to craft furniture. Like those second sons, Jens Ekornes
began to craft furniture and founded Stressless, which
became a name recognized for its innovation in comfort.
Many years since the first second-born sons began crafting their
first chairs, Sykkylven is now the heart of Norway’s furniture

BERNHARDT
HISTORY
Bernhardt is one of the largest family owned furniture
businesses in the world and currently has third and fourth
generation Bernhardt family members actively involved in the
company. The Bernhardt legacy began over 125 years ago
with J.M. Bernhardt. Orphaned at 13, John Bernhardt worked
in various jobs, including positions as a government surveyor
helping settlers in the frontier, logger and timber cutter, and
supervisor at Caldwell Land & Lumber Company. From
there, John was able to buy lumber, start his own sawmill,
and eventually found Bernhardt Furniture Company, Inc. in
1889. Since then, Bernhardt furniture has continued to grow
and thrive.
Bernhardt is now based in North Carolina and led by fourth
generation, Alex Bernhardt.

Founded in 1990 by Bob Duncan, American Leather began as a small company with only four employees. With

CENTURY
HISTORY
Century is a family business based in Hickory, North Carolina
that entered the luxury furniture industry in 1947. Harley F.
Shuford Sr. also created Century’s Wood Products Division,
which now has a broad selection of styles and over 700
different designs. With Shuford’s leadership and partnership
with Ramond K. Sobota, who partnered with Century for over
40 years, Century became a leader in their field.
After Harley Shuford Sr. retired, Century remained in family
hands, going from Shuford to Shuford. Today, Alex Shuford,
III is Century’s president and leads the company in constant
improvement. Their founder, Harley F. Shuford, Sr.’s words
describe Century’s dedication to the craft: “We strive to
make furniture of such impeccable quality that it brings joy
not only to the people who own it, but also to the craftsmen
who build it.”

Founded in 1911 in Hickory, North Carolina, Hickory Chair
Furniture Company has always been devoted to creating
custom furniture. They began with a made-to-order dining
chair and expanded into a wide selection of timeless styles

SHIFMAN
HISTORY
Shifman Mattress Company began in 1893, when it was
established by two brothers, Abraham and Samuel Shifman.
Believing in better sleep and higher quality bedding, the brothers
set out to make the finest handcrafted mattresses in the industry.
Samuel Shifman bought the company and both his sons and
grandsons became involved in the business and continued to
improve the quality of their bedding and service.
In 1985, Mike Hammer, impressed by Shifman’s quality and
attention to detail, purchased the company. Determined to
stand by the traditions that had so impressed him, Mike vowed
to stay true to Abraham and Samuel Shifman’s dedication to
quality. Today, Bill, Mike’s son, continues to push the company
forward as president, while maintaining the impeccable craftsmanship of their founders.

the Sanotuft technique, which secures the layers of the mattress

creates a buttonless tuft.
Shifman is one of the only companies left that makes doublesided mattresses. When you get a single-sided mattress, it’s like
getting half a mattress; they have less material and a shorter
life, but a Shifman mattress has double the comfort and lasts
twice as long.
