The first is the miracle of the one-day supply of oil miraculously lasting eight days, and the second miracle of even greater importance is the story of a committed band of people, the Maccabees, who led a successful revolt against a much larger force, paving the way for Jewish independence and survival. It is a powerful story that teaches all of us lessons about standing up for our convictions and challenging all those that promote bigotry and intolerance. One of the important obligations that we have during Hanukkah, aside from lighting the candles for eight nights, is called pirsum hanes – publicizing the miracle. This is the reason for lighting the Menorah at night and for placing it by a window so that all those that pass by can see it. But why? Isn’t it enough for us to celebrate the holiday with our own family and friends, eating latkes and sufganiot, and playing dreidel? One of the answers that I believe has merit is that the Festival of Hanukkah implores us to be proud of who we are, our history and our heritage. The A L P H A Talmud tells us the pirsum hanes acts as a declarative statement of affiliation and connection. Hanukkah is our Pride Holiday. As the last few weeks of the calendar year approach, we also recall all that has happened in the last twelve months. Alpha Omegans, too, should be proud of who we are, what we are committed to and all that we have accomplished. Yes, we like to celebrate events, eat well, dance, and we really enjoy each other’s company. When one of us is in trouble, or needs support and comfort, we are there to offer that support, kindness and sometimes just a hug. We are the International Dental Fraternity that last month celebrated Shabbat with one voice in our inaugural “Shabbat Across AO”. Our members are the dentists that are answering the White House’s call to help Holocaust Survivors by providing free dental services to this most deserving group of people. Alpha Omega is the dental fraternity that has its 2014 annual convention in Tel Aviv – showing our support and love to the people of Israel. These programs and events and many, many more define our identity. It is who we are. It is what we do. Let us be proud Alpha Omegans and show the world all that we do collectively and individually. O M E G A | A O N O W 1 A C T L O C A L LY – T H I N K G L O B A L LY We are pleased to announce that BERNICE EDELSTEIN is the new Program Coordinator for the AO/Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program. Bernice previously worked for the AO U.S. Foundation so it was a natural fit for her to return to Alpha Omega and provide support to the Program ambassadors, volunteers, and the Jewish social service partners. Bernice will report to the AO Headquarters office and will be an employee of the Fraternity. The Holocaust Survivors Program is truly a priority for Alpha Omega, not only for the nine, pilot cities but for all members worldwide. It is wonderful to have Bernice on the team to help us move forward with the Program. Bernice can be reached at bedelstein@ao.org. We are fortunate to not only partner with Henry Schein and the outstanding Team Schein, but our program has also partnered with Ms. Aviva Sufian, White House Special Envoy for U.S. Holocaust Survivors Services, the Association of Jewish Family and Children’s Services (AJFCA), and Bedford Healthcare Systems. We are pleased to announce that these members will serve as Ambassadors for the AO/HC Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program. They are recruiting for volunteer panels in their respective cities. The Ambassadors will begin to work with the local Jewish social services to start patient treatments in January. We wish to thank the Ambassadors and volunteers for their leadership. I met Marlene and Mike in the first three weeks of my tenure at AO, during the mid-year board meeting in Montreal, Canada. When I arrived in Montreal, I was reserved and just trying to figure out the landscape of this new group of people. But, Marlene wasn’t having it, this introverted nature of mine. She embraced me from the beginning and along with Mike’s continued support, I could always rely on a Marlene-style pep talk if I worried too much about an issue and needed a kick in the right direction. Her words lifted me up when I needed it most. For those who did not know Marlene, imagine having a champion in your corner in Montreal who befriended you without judgment. You were AO so you were okay. She had a real love for the AO community and people who have built it. I truly admired that and it was my honor to attend her funeral to pay respects to a woman who supported me unconditionally. People have heard me say that sometimes the spouses are more important than the members. That may be a bold statement but the spouses support our members and I believe in supporting them too. If my words hit a chord with you and you wish to honor Marlene or someone special, please consider donating to the AO/Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program through our Canadian and U.S. Foundations. Marlene was a natural giver so it’s only fitting that a tribute may include a donation to this special fund to help the most deserving. Fraternally, Heidi Weber PRESIDENTIAL VISITATION TO WINNIPEG, MANITOBA — A HIDDEN GEM IN CANADA — On December 6th, International President Avi Wurman and First Spouse Sharon Sussman joined the AO Manitoba chapter for its annual memorial lecture. The Wurmans were treated to an outstanding lecture and event that included fraters and their spouses. W in n g ipe www.ao.org Avi and Sharon wish to thank the chapter leadership for the invitation and for the hospitality. It was an amazing event! We had over 70 attendees, which included fraters and their families. It was so much fun, and we felt a connection with all the AOs around the world. Strasbourg When the International Board introduces a magnificent project, the AO Alsace Chapter always answers. That’s what happened on Friday, November 14th in the evening, Chabbath Hayé Sarah, when more than 40 members, family members, and friends met in a warm atmosphere to celebrate Chabbath across AO. illinois Former chapter president Maurice Dahan made the kiddouch and Philippe Lévy, current chapter president spoke about the significance of several generations of AO members meeting for a memorable evening. Long live AO! Chi Chapter Congratulations to Chi Chapter for a wonderful Shabbat Dinner last night. While date conflicts did not allow the dinner to be on the date of Shabbat Across AO, the intent and warmth was in harmony. Special thanks to Noam Greenbaum for organizing and leading us and to the Hillel House at the University of Michigan for hosting the dinner. No photos were taken to preserve the sanctity of Shabbat. www.ao.org los angeles A L P H A O M E G A | A O N O W 4 A C T L O C A L LY – T H I N K G L O B A L LY seattle toronto university of texas at houston vancouver www.ao.org A L P H A O M E G A | A O N O W 5 A C T L O C A L LY – T H I N K G L O B A L LY TORONTO PRESIDENTIAL THANK YOU By Avi Wurman On behalf of Alpha Omega, I want to thank the Toronto Chapter for hosting a fabulous regional meeting. For nine months, Toronto Chapter President Brian Chapnick had the vision to make the meeting happen, and through many planning sessions with the organizing committee and with the guidance of AO’s Executive Director, Heidi Weber, Brian’s vision became a wonderful reality. REGIONAL MEETING We thank all those that attended, especially our AO members and their families, students and alumni, from Florida, Philadelphia, Denver, Boston, Montreal, Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo, and London, Ontario. This event along with our fraternity wide Shabbat over AO program clearly demonstrates the desire of our members to connect with one another as an inclusive community of dental professionals and their families with common traditions and similar values. We like being together! Let’s have another North American Chapter host a similar meeting in 2015. www.ao.org A L P H A O M E G A | A O N O W 6 A C T L O C A L LY – T H I N K G L O B A L LY TORONTO REGIONAL MEETING www.ao.org A L P H A O M E G A | A O N O W 7 A C T L O C A L LY – T H I N K G L O B A L LY DECEMBER 3, 2014 AO was pleased to sponsor Toronto frater Willy Dayan as a Greater New York Dental Meeting speaker.
