This year’s team is one of Pate’s youngest but is also of his most talented teams at the school. The coach went into the season expecting a bit of a roller coaster ride and that has been the case. However, Marlboro County has worked hard and put itself in position to earn a secondplace finish in the region 6-AAA standings. Propelled by a win over perennial region contender Darlington, the Bulldogs entered the final two games of the regular season with a 14-9 record overall and a 6-2 mark in region Darriel Mack is one of three Bulldogs who was named to the HSSR All-State football play. “We’ve had a good year, no matter how we team from Marlboro County. HSSR.com January 31, 2013 Stoots says young baseball team should compete by David Shelton Senior Writer north charleston – Few baseball programs in SCISA have been as successful as the northwood academy program over the last five years. Veteran head coach Jerry Stoots is hoping that winning tradition helps in 2013 as the coach fields his youngest team ever. While failing to win a state title over the last half decade, the Chargers have been in the state championship series for five consecutive years. Northwood lost to Pinewood Prep in the series last spring and Stoots lost most of that team to graduation or transfer. The top two returning pitchers both transferred to public schools and the Chargers lost starters at catcher, rightfield, centerfield, shortstop and first base. The 2013 Chargers will look a lot different in terms of experience, the coach said. “We’ll have three or four guys out there that played some last year but only a few of those played a lot,” said Stoots, who has nearly 800 career wins. “We have a lot of young guys up from the junior varsity program that will have to help us. Overall, we have not been this young since I’ve been here. We have four seniors and three juniors and combined that group does not have a whole lot of playing experience.” Stoots, however, says while lacking in experience, he feels the 2013 Chargers are a determined bunch. “Their attitude and effort in practice has been very good,” the coach said. “We’ll put a decent group out there every night. We’ll be short on experience but if this group keeps working hard, they will be competitive. I’m sure most of the teams we play will be more experienced.” The Chargers have five players participating in basketball so the team may not gel until a little later in the season. Sophomore infielder Will lloyd, who will likely start at first, is involved in basketball, as is returning senior outfielder Drayton clutters. Clutters and Lloyd were two of the top hitters in the playoffs last season and will be counted on for consistent production this season. Senior Gene Howard returns as a third-year starter at third base and also will log innings on the mound. Senior Dalton craven returns as a middle infielder and senior Ben Watkins is a returning outfielder that has potential to hit as well. Junior Drew Duncan is up from the junior varsity and will see time on the infield. Junior Daniel Duncan will begin the season as the number one catcher. Junior noah Hammond possesses potential as an outfielder and could see time behind the plate. Sophomore Jon Glee will be asked to log innings on the bump and will play some first base. Sophomore Micah Deveaux will likely push for time in the outfield. Eighth-grader Kris collins shows promise as a shortstop and could see time on the mound. Sophomore Garrett Jarrell will see action in the outfield as well. Newcomers Trey altice and barry Goodwin, both sophomores, will compete for playing time as well. “Pitching the big thing for us,” said Stoots. “We really don’t have a lot of guys that have pitched much in a varsity game so we have to gain some experience. We have some arms but they need work. We have to see who can throw strikes consistently. We don’t have overpowering arms but if we can throw strikes we have a chance. “I’m not sure how we will hit. We have some potential hitters that are unproven. We need a little time to put it all together. We have some youngsters but they will get an opportunity to see what they can do.” Lady Chargers ready for run at SCISA AAA crown by David Shelton Senior Writer north charleston – Heading into a key region game at Pinewood Prep on February 8th, the northwood academy girls’ basketball team needed a win to force a tie for the region title with the Lady Panthers. Regardless of the outcome in the region race, it is clear the Lady Chargers are again a strong contender for the SCISA class AAA state championship. Northwood Academy entered the game with Pinewood Prep with a 24-3 record overall and a 7-1 mark in region play. Northwood notched its sixth consecutive win on February 5th, defeating Hilton Head Christian. During the six-game streak, the Lady Chargers averaged 79.9 points per game. As has been the case all season, Northwood is led by junior guard amber campbell, one of the state’s top prospects. Campbell continues to average more than 30 points per game, scoring 31.8 points while averaging 9.0 rebounds and 5.4 steals. Campbell has a season-high of 43 points, which she has done twice this season. She also has recorded 11 double-doubles this season. While Campbell is doing her usual thing, the rest of the team continues to improve their contributions. As the supporting cast improves, so does the overall team production. Earlier this season, only one other player averaged more than six or seven points per game. Those numbers have increased steadily. Freshman point guard Katelyn Powell has raised her average into double figures, now averaging 10.7 points per game. Powell also averages 5.5 assists and 4.3 steals per contest. Powell’s season high in points is 17 while she has recorded nine steals in a game as well. She has posted two games with 10 assists. Junior forward antoinette Davis continues her solid work on the inside. Davis has raised her averages to 8.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Davis’ best outing of the season came in the Carolina Invitational Tournament over the holidays where she Page 9 norTHWooD acaDeMy COMPLIMENTS OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF NORTHWOOD ACADEMY Dr. Darlene Anderson, Upper School Principal Curt Combs, Assistant Principal Tonya Houston, Assistant Principal Jerry Stoots, Athletic Director Melanie Van Dousen, Lower School Principal Erin Louden, Assistant Principal Karen Morgan, Daycare Director ADC Engineering Salutes All Area Athletes Patriots Drywall (843) 871-3600 bob Shipley - Owner 109 Holiday Drive Summerville 843-261-2121 Half Price Burgers Every Tuesday! Freshman guard caroline McQueeney has played in the last nine games after missing the first half of the season.
