Playhouses, Play Forts, Big Forts, Custom Play Structures and Treehouses
We make our play structures from natural redwood lumber that we grind smooth, hand carved, and then finished with the
application of high quality, non-toxic tung-oil stains (both inside and out) in the colors of your choice. Some of Barbara’s standard
play features include: doors with sliding “who-goes-there” peepholes, doorknockers, mail slots, hand carved and applied trims,
windows with shutters and/or jailbars, cut-outs, and escape hatches.
Safety First and foremost, all of our play structures are designed and built to meet the highest safety standards. No chemically
treated wood is used - only natural redwood from well-managed forests. All redwood surfaces have been routed & ground smooth
to prevent splinters, sharp edges rounded and doors & shutters hung with a 1/2” gap all around to prevent little fingers from
getting pinched. We believe that children need stimulating and challenging environments for developing their abilities. If the
play space is not exciting or attractive to them, it will fail to spark their imaginations and engage their attention. Our goal is to
create the safest structures and environments possible, while allowing children to explore new challenges.
Green Green living starts early with green playing! Since 1987, Barbara has been committed to creating eco-friendly play
areas that are good for kids' physical health and imaginative well-being. Long before it became popular, Barbara refused to use
chemically-treated woods and distrusted finishes with toxic mildicide additives. Instead, Barbara's recipe for eco-friendly play
areas: use only natural redwood from well-managed forests & natural tung oil stains. As much as possible, use organic materials
that are good to touch, to smell, to look at and to play on. We are a small company with big ideas: we want to see kids outdoors,
up in the trees, on play structures built with craftsmanship, integrity, and sustainable materials, purposefully designed to spark
imaginative and uproarious play - all while imbuing a sense of appreciation for the natural world.
Durability Every structure is built to withstand the test of time. The design, the materials, the construction and the
staining are all geared towards longevity, sturdiness and renewability. We use redwood lumber which is naturally durable with
an anticipated long life span. Our non-toxic tung oil stains slowly fade instead of chipping or peeling and are simple to reapply.
The structural corner posts on our 2-story forts are routed, inserted and bolted into our custom metal "boots" and then set into
concrete pier footings. This allows us to keep all concrete below grade, which is a must around children! The "boot" protects the
post from rot at the point of contact with the dirt and further extends the life of the structure. And if you need to move the play
structure, the posts can be unbolted from the "boots" and the structure relocated.
playability Barbara's designs are as much about what you don't see as what you do see. For over 20 years Barbara has been
watching kids play and listening to what kids like. The result is a magical combination of physical play and imaginative play.
Each design is planned with "loops of play" that encourages active play as well as archetypal triggers that spark imaginative play,
such as castle crenellations or a secret escape.
color Starting with high-quality artist's pigments and pure tung oil, we now create our own 59 colors in-house. We offer a
variety of color palettes: ranging from subdued earth tones that create hidden hideaways to bright vibrant color combinations
that delight kids of all ages. Every client is invited to select their preferred colors. Barbara then creates several "color maps"
to show possible distributions of the color. It's a fun and collaborative process. Our structures are completely stained inside
& out, often with different palettes (for example, muted exterior colors with brighter interior colors.)

Our custom design process is as easy as 1, 2, 3:
Step 1: Barbara meets with you (or talks by phone) to review her portfolio, discuss site locations & brainstorm ideas;
Step 2: Barbara presents 2 or 3 drawings with pricing estimates and you start to discuss color palettes;
Step 3: Barbara presents the final design for your approval, along with the color palette, a site map, pricing and a timetable
for construction. If everything is a go, you & Barbara sign a construction contract and we begin to build!
If you are ready to start the design process, please let us know and we will send you a design agreement to sign and return
along with a $2,400 retainer. Most custom designs are completed within the retainer amount. The design process is fun and
interactive, and can take a month or more to complete, so it is best to start the process early. Receipt of the Design Agreement
holds your place in line!

Information A bout Our Play Structures
LEAD TIME Because we make each play structure to order, the lead time is generally 4 to 6 weeks for playhouses, 6 to 8 weeks
for play forts, 8 to 10 weeks for the Big Forts, 10 to 12 weeks for Custom Play Structures and Treehouses. Call us if you need a
play structure by a certain date - we pull out the stops for birthdays! Plus we try to keep a few models on hand for last minute buyers.
SELECTION OF A SUITABLE SITE If space is an important factor, please refer to the dimensions of the structure. As a
guideline, add an additional 6’ of obstacle-free “run-around” room in all directions from the play structure as the recommended
safety use zone. We strongly recommend filling the use zone with 6” to 9” of bark chip or other approved resilient surfacing
material. It has been shown that an approved impact absorption surface material is the single most effective safety feature in
helping to prevent serious injury in the event of an accidental fall.
Most pre-designed structures require a relatively level site, although we can modify most of our structures to accommodate sloping
ground. For really challenging terrain, see our Custom Design Process (see page 13 of the brochure).
Consideration should be given to selecting a suitable site to minimize any impact on or loss of privacy to neighbors. Please call
us if you would like assistance in determining what will best fit in your yard!
DELIVERY & INSTALLATION We design and build each play structure modularly for easier delivery and assembly. We preassemble each structure in our shop to make sure everything fits together perfectly, then disassemble for shipment. We deliver
the play structure by truck, with each piece “blanket wrapped” for protection. The cost of delivery and installation depends on
the size and complexity of the structure, as well as the ease of access and site conditions. We offer several different installation
options so please call or email for a quote.
