PRELIMINARY CAUTIONS
The PROFURL in-boom mainsail reefing system is not designed to be installed on wooden masts,
or aluminium masts with track added with screws, rivets, glue or any similar assembly. Fitting on a
carbon mast is not recommended an requires special skills. Please contact us.
Please check that there is no sign of severe corrosion on the original mast which would compromise the strength of the assembly.
The person in charge with fitting will be fully responsible for installation and adaptation on board
according to the specifications shown in this manual.
Receipt of goods
All goods must be checked on delivery and the purchaser should claim from the carrier within seven days in the event
of loss or damage.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Note : names in bold refer to parts identified on the exploded view
1.
One set of Luff Foils LFU (1) fitted behind
the mast. All Luff Foils are 2 meter (6’ 6 ¾”) long.
There has one special Top Foil (2) which has no
Alignment Pin. The top Luff Foil will be recut at its
upper end to match the luff length.
2.
These Foil T-Brackets FTB are attached
to the mast track with Mast slugs (FTB009). The
thread of the mast slugs receives a washer (6087)
and a locknut (6038) for attachment. Foil T-Brackets
allow the luff foils to rotate on appoximately 90°
from boat’s centreline.
3.
A Halyard Deflector (HDU) located at top
of the Luff Foils leads the mainsail halyard to the
back foils. It is fit to two T-Brackets, themselves
being attached by mean of Locknuts
4.
A Gooseneck Casting Block fit on the mast
with 3 Mast Slugs, and 2 gooseneck Side plates
cambered at the mast shape before fitting, and
which will be preferably screwed, or riveted to the
mast.

5.
A Boom section which has been delivered
to length.
6.
A Furling Mandrel FMU which turns on Bearings. Bearings turn on a Rod inner stay
7.
A special boom vang. It is attached :
- onto the mast by mean of a boomvang attachment, including an gooseneck attached onto the
mast with 2 slide screws locknuts and 2 gooseneck cheekplates which will be riveted on the mast
with pop rivets with conical head supplied. The boomvang lower end will be attached onto an articulation eye rotating in the boomvang gooseneck.
- onto the boom with a boomvang hound.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1.
Very important: Release the main sheet all the way out until the main sail has no power, &
it starts to back. Ensure the vang tackle, if any, is released. This is important, because the foil
rotates independently to the boom. Furling cannot take place if the boom & foil are not more or
less aligned. Alignment is achieved by simply releasing the main sheet.
2.
Load the furling line onto the winch, and apply pressure to initiate furling. Only once the furling line cannot be pulled any further, can you begin to release the main halyard. This is important,
to ensure correct leech tension is maintained.
3.
Ease the main halyard, using just enough drag resistance to stop the sail from bagging at
the luff. Too much main halyard resistance will force the sail to pull backwards on the mandrel,
and cause tension lines in the sail, extending from the feeder aft. If this occurs, simply release the
main halyard, and continue furling. The lines will disappear as the furling continues.
4.
Once the desired sail size has been achieved, (preferably with a batten just touching the
top of the mandrel) lock off the main halyard, and tension the sail using the furling line.
Ensure the crew practices these simple steps, so that in the event of you needing to reef in unfavourable conditions, the process is well versed.
Remember as a rule: always reef at the time when you first think of it. Conditions can become
very bad very quickly. Safety must come first.

PREPARATION
IN CASE OF A RETROFIT ON A EXISTING MAST: UNFITTING THE HARDWARE
FROM THE ORIGINAL MAST
a - Dismantle the original gooseneck, as well as cleats, winches and winches brackets on the
mast, as well as any piece of equipment which would interfere with the fitting of the new gooseneck and with the ability for the forward boom end fitting to rotate when the boom should swing
from one side to the other. Please see drawing for dimensions of the new gooseneck in relation
with mark « C » on the mast.
b – Because of the heavier weight of the MK4 boom the original boom vang attachment should not
be used.
c - Dismantle the original feeder (if any) at the mast track entrance.
d - Check that the mast slugs supplied have suitable dimensions for the mast track. If not, their
width should be modified accordingly. In all other cases please contact us.

INSTALLATION
DETERMINING THE HEIGHT OF THE GOOSENECK
Reminder: the ideal working angle of the boomvang being 45° the boomvang must not angle
less than 30 ° with the mast or boom. The lower position the gooseneck will have and the smaller
boom vang angle you will get, producing less boomvang lift efficiency.
a -To avoid any potential conflict between the boom and the cabin top, a bimini, a lifeline or any
other piece of hardware, please accurately mark the level of the lower edge of the original boom
with line «C». See drawing 2. Remember to also consider the main sheet blocks as well as the
splicing (if any) of the sheet on the blocks
DRAWING 2
C
C
b - Check that the boomvang delivered with your system will once installed make an angle of
minimum 35° with the mast and the boom. Should it not be the case, the position of the new gooseneck must be raised on the mast in order to obtain at least this angle of 35°.
Information: pin to pin boomvang length : 2100 mm open / 1970 mm closed (drawing 1)
8
DETERMINING THE HEIGHT OF THE GOOSENECK
c -Draw a line « B »on the mast at 233 mm from line BASE OF P . Line « B » will correspond to
the level of the upper edge of the top gooseneck once fit on the mast.
The under side MK4 furling boom is from line «B» at 555 mm and must be at the same position to
line C (drawing 3) and normaly at the level of the original boom. Remember to also consider the
main sheet blocks as well as the splicing (if any) of the sheet on the blocks
DRAWING 3

d - Insert the round head of the mast slugs into the mast track. The number of mast slugs you
need depends on the number of luff foils and of T- brackets :
1 - mast slugs are needed for the vang casting unit. Slide them down to the mast foot and
keep them stacked down to later fit the vang casting unit.
2- Slide 4 mast slugs (7) into the mast track for the halyard deflector unit.
3- Slide as many times 2 mast slugs into the mast track as the amount of foil T- brackets to be fit. See drawing 4

FITTING THE GOOSENECK CASTING BLOCKS
a - Attach the gooseneck casting block units at the convenient height with the 3 corresponding
mast slugs and corresponding washer and locknuts . Tightening torque on locknut to be 1 to 1.5
daN/m. See drawing 8.
b - The aluminium gooseneck side plates are normally delivered to the shape of your mast. Minor
camber adjustments may be necessary and should be made with a mechanical or hydraulic press
machine. Hammering must be avoided to prevent damage to the plates in any case. During bending please also protect the plates from dings and dents.
c – In case the side plates are located over a existing cut off for a halyard exit, either avoid drilling
too close from the cut off portion, or better add an aluminium plate to fill the hole.
d - Screw the side plates onto the gooseneck casting block units. Fit Loctite to the threads prior to
screwing.
e - Draw drilling lead lines on the side plates for drilling the plates and the mast. Press the side
plates on the mast with clamps (please protect the plates with convenient means). Tap a thread at
Ø 8 mm and machine holes so that the conical heads of the screws will be flush with the surface of
the side plates. There should have at least 6 screws M8 on each side plate
f - Temporarily fit the gooseneck block and the gooseneck units

Adjust the position of the mainsheet bails with the set screws which can be reached from underneath. Fasten the mainsheet blocks on the mainsheet bails.
CAUTION : on boats with a mainsail track or mainsail block attachment on deck ahead of
the main hatch the mainsheet bails must be re-positioned as far backward as possible
Push the boom by hand over the lifelines as far as possible and tie a knot on the mainsheet so that
in no case the boom profile can be damaged by the rearmost shrouds when running downwind or
INSTALLATION OF THE CONTROL LINES TO THE COCKPIT
REMINDER TO AVOID FRICTION
1.
Only use good quality ball bearing blocks, which will have to be cleaned and lubricated from time to time as per manufacturer’s specifications.
2.
Use ball bearing blocks with a sheave of large diameter.
3.
Reduce as much as possible the number of lead blocks between the drum and the
cockpit.
4.
Reduce as much as possible the angle of deviation of the control lines.
a - Attach a ball bearing block at the mast foot at the convenient position to lead the line to cockpit, trying to
minimse the angle as much as possible

ENTRETIEN
MAINTENANCE
Your PROFURL system requires no special maintenance. You can rinse it with fresh water as often as necessary to
remove salt and dirt from the components. This will also improve the appearance of the system.
ATTENTION
Ne jamais appliquer de lubrifiant type WD 40 ® (ou équivalent), ce qui endommagerait irrémédiablement les
joints d’étanchéité et détruirait à terme les roulements à billes.
CAUTION
Never use WD 40 ® (or similar) on the seals in the drum or halyard swivel mechanism as it will permanently
damage them and affect the watertightness of the bearings.
