Diversity of Life - Protista -
Diversity of Life - Protista - What are Protista? A very diverse group of unicellular (usually but not always) eukaryotes. Most primitive creatures to have organelles and nuclei bound by membranes BUT “Protista” as a group doesn’t exist anymore - just used as a convenience. Original members of the “Protista” Why are Protista so diverse? ENDOSYMBIOSIS Why are Protista so diverse? What’s the evidence? 1. DNA in organelles of red and green algae is very similar to cyanobacterial DNA 2. Number of membranes that surround the organelles Euglenozoa Alveolata Stramenopila Groups that we’ll be dealing with Archaeplastids Amoebozoa Euglenozoa Alveolata Stramenopila Archaeplastids Amoebozoa Protist groups - Euglenozoa Key Characteristic -spiral or crystalline rod inside the flagellum Euglenozoa - Euglena eyespot Contractile vacuole nucleus Paramylon granule Euglenozoa Alveolata Stramenopila Archaeplastids Amoebozoa Protist groups - Alveolata Key characteristic - Alveoli - sacs under the plasma membrane alveoli plasma membrane Protist groups - Alveolata Some important members of the group - Dinoflagellates - some poisonous species Red tide Protist groups - Alveolata Some important members of the group - Dinoflagellates - some useful species (Symbiodinium) - symbiotic with corals and other marine animals Protist groups - Alveolata Some important members of the group - Ciliates - use cilia (not flagella) for locomotion - possess both micro- and macronuclei contractile vacuole oral groove macronucleus food vacuole Paramecium Protist groups - Alveolata Paramecium reproduction Euglenozoa Alveolata Stramenopila Archaeplastids Amoebozoa Protist groups - Stramenopila - possess two types of flagella - hairy and smooth Protist groups - Stramenopila Brown algae - seaweeds (kelp) Protist groups - Stramenopila Brown algae - seaweeds (kelp) Protist groups - Stramenopila Brown algae - seaweeds (kelp) Thallus = Protist groups - Stramenopila Brown algae - alternation of generations Protist groups - Stramenopila Diatoms Euglenozoa Alveolata Stramenopila Archaeplastids Amoebozoa Protist groups - Archaeplastids Volvox Protist groups - Archaeplastids Protist groups - Archaeplastids Porphyra Ulva – sea lettuce Palmaria - dulse Euglenozoa Alveolata Stramenopila Archaeplastids Amoebozoa Protist groups - Amoebozoa Key characteristic - lobe-shaped pseudopodia Protist groups - Amoebozoa Gymnamoeba - feeding Protist groups - Amoebozoa - cellular slime molds
