Now I would give anything to go back. I never knew that Middle School would be tons of homework, switching classes every five minutes, and lockers. Don’t even get me started on those lockers! Those things take forever to open and are a big dirty mess. Every Friday, I stay at School for five more minutes to clean my locker, and it feels like forever! Actually, my locker is pretty neat, but I’ve seen some lockers that look like an abyss. I keep the things I hardly use on the top shelf, my notebooks and binders on the second shelf, my folders on the bottom, and of course my backpack on the hook. Switching classes may make it seem like the day is shorter, but it is truly terrible. It seems like you are switching classes every five minutes! You will most likely have homework for all of those classes. Your classes are all so far apart. I probably run two miles every day just trying to get to and from my classes! Now don’t let this article scare you about Middle School, it can be fun. You just have to make the best of it, and take it one step at a time. That is the key to surviving Middle School. I met my best friends at Middle School, and I’ve learned so many interesting things. Actually, Middle School is pretty fun. I have really learned to like Middle School. You get to have different classes, different teachers, and switching classes can be fun. The best part about Middle School in my opinion is having different teachers. If you get a teacher you don’t like, you have ten other teachers! I love having a bunch of teachers because I don’t need to worry about having a mean teacher all the time. I like picking my classes because it gives me more freedom to learn about what I love. Actually, this year Gaudet has more choices. Only PE, math, social studies, ELA, science, and health are required. All of your other classes, you are free to choose. Lockers can be a life saver at times. You have so many notebooks binders, folders, and just School supplies in general. It would be really hard to fit all of my School supplies in one of those cubbies you have in Elementary School. I like lockers because I don’t have to carry everything to every one of my classes, and I can leave everything I don’t need at school. Switching classes is fun because it makes the day go by way faster. School only seems like an hour or maybe two when you are switching classes. If you don’t like what you are doing in one class or your teacher is having a bad day, you have the next class to look forward to. Middle School is both awesome and terrible, but we need to make the best of the only three years we have here. –By Iliana 2 LEADERSHIP TAKES CHARACTER By Eleanor Support the character leadership team to help Gaudet students be nicer this month by being kind and good sports. In other words, to further explain, you can be on time for class, pick up trash in the hallways and outside your community, or help any citizens around you in need. If a teacher sees a student being trustworthy, that student will get a bracelet that says they support the months character trait. That teacher will then put their name and what they did that showed character into the School raffle! If their name is chosen from the raffle, they will get a prize that includes… a $ 25.oo gift card from Barnes and Noble and seven other prizes from the YMCA. Mrs. Leys will also take a picture of the winner from each month and put it up in her office. The teacher who nominates the first student from each month will receive an exciting prize from the Office. You can see them for details. Thank you for helping us work together in building character here at Gaudet! SHOULD WE HAVE DOORS FOR THE LOCKER ROOM STALLS? Editorial By: BellaRae I think we should have doors on the School locker room stalls. It invades other people’s privacy and makes them very uncomfortable. I also think we shouldn’t be graded on whether or not we change our clothes. This is very silly to me because grades should be giving out for sportsmanship in PE, not for changing. ”I think there should be doors on the changing stalls at School, because people need privacy.” says fellow 4th grader, Grace W. Besides the fact that people need privacy when they are changing, I think someone might beat someone else up because they might be overweight, or something doesn’t look right. “I think we should have doors on the Schools changing room stalls and I also think they don’t have doors because the School can’t afford it” says fellow 5th grader, Gwen P. So do you think we should have doors for the locker room stalls? Yoga Have you ever thought when you get angry you couldn’t help yourself but scream or throw something? If you feel like that you can use a technique, called yoga. Yoga can help you calm down, it can also help you reduce stress. Yoga isn’t just a way to calm down, it’s also a lot of fun. There are a lot of fun poses to do like downward dog, upward dog, and the tree pose. So, if you ever feel like screaming or throwing something, just try taking a class in yoga. 3 Free Office, Free Power. By Ben P. I am absolutely excited about this! Now all Middletown students have access to Microsoft Office! Microsoft Office is what I wrote this article with and if you have not heard of it before, you much be living under a rock. So first of all how do you get access? Start by going to http://www.mpsri.net/office365 Click the link it gives you which should lead you to the login page. Put in your computer login and @mpsri.net (Example: jsample20@mpsri.net don’t forget the 19,20,21,22,23 etc.) Your computer password which is your first two lunch numbers, your first, Middle, and last initials and then the rest. You can download these if you are at home by clicking on the Install Now Button. After that, enjoy the free products you get access to! You can use it for personal or educational use and there are many things you can do. This is the introduction to my series of Office 365 tutorials for the future because it won’t just be in this School but most likely it will be essential for a job you may have in the future. Remember, any kid in the Middletown School District has access to this, let’s just hope we get Minecraft with office… NOT! Microsoft Word By: Ben Lesson 1 – Basics First off, you can get to Word by going to your start menu which is the Windows logo and going to all programs. Look for a Microsoft Office folder and it should contain shortcuts to get to the Microsoft Office products. Click on Word. If you are using Windows 8, usually it can be found somewhere in the boxes menu. When you get to the Window, you can type and you can configure how your text looks by using the tools in the picture to the right. You can set the font, color, if it can be bold or italic or underlined and how big it can be. If you want certain text, highlight it and it will usually look like this. If you want to create separate text boxes go to insert, and then shapes, and click text boxes. You can grab pictures and shapes by just holding down the left button and moving it around and of course letting go of it makes it stay in place, if you can’t move a picture go to position in format and configure it to something random to make it move. Also, you can resize pictures by moving your mouse when you hold down the sides of the picture. (Usually there is squares there which you can click to resize.) Finally, you can click the file button, save as, and you can save your document where you want. By looking at insert, there are unlimited possibilities and ways to impress by working with Microsoft Word itself, you can make logos and charts or simply make a digital copy of a report to send to your teacher. Next tutorial will be how to make a nice logo. 4 New Schedules Editorial By: ABC Inc. This year at Gaudet is a little weird. The schedules now have two co-curricular classes a day, and a split/ combined lunch with other grades. Fifth and sixth grades, and seventh and eighth grades, have lunch together on days two, three and five. These odd lunches are totally confusing and the two co-curricular classes are a little weird. It’s spreading mass confusion around the School and now there are consequences for being late to your class or going to the wrong class. Students are walking late into their classes which is taking away their learning time. The new schedules have two co-curricular classes. They are introducing new classes and they gave us two cocurricular classes so we could have all of them. To be honest though, it is just confusing. The amount of homework increased; because we have double the co-curricular classes, which means double co-curricular homework on top of the regular homework we have. Plus, now kids don’t have the time to just relax and do their homework. Instead, they are choosing to relax, and their homework isn’t getting done. This is making them stay in for recess or lunch and they are losing the socializing time that they really need. Personally we think the new schedules are super-duper confusing but they do have positives. Having more STEM classes, a Media World class, extra P.E., and other fun things are all positive. These classes are really fun but if you wanted a certain class in your schedule you didn’t get the class that you wanted. This disappoints a lot of kids who didn’t get to learn about what the class is teaching. The new schedules have positives and negatives but they will still be the similar schedules The Time I Went To Disney World! By: Taylor Hi, my name is Taylor and I am going to tell you a little bit about my first trip to Disney world. The first time I went to Disney World, I was 5 years old. I was kind of scared about going on the airplane. I have never been on one, so I was thinking, should I be scared about going on an airplane? I got on the airplane and we got up in the air. I found out that it wasn’t so scary after all, I was wrong! Than it came to landing. It felt like you were dropping but the airplane was just going down! We got to the Florida airport, and I couldn’t wait until we got to our hotel room! We finally got to our hotel room and settled in! After, we had lunch, my family then went into the pool! We finished lunch and went into the pool because we didn’t get in until 1:00 in the afternoon. After the pool we went back to our hotel to wash off from the water. It had chemicals to keep the water clean! The whole family then met in the parking lot to drive to the Walt Disney Park in Orlando Florida! When we got there, I was so excited because I have never been to a Walt Disney Park before in my life! I loved going to Walt Disney World because I get to spend time with my family and I loved going on the rides with them! Fun Facts: Walt loved coloring on his house with his brothers and his sister. He loved playing with his siblings! Walt loved playing with his pets at the farm house. Walt was an amazing person! I am so glad he opened Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida! Walt had an amazing life but he didn’t get to see the Walt Disney Park open in Orlando Florida! 5 Lego Robotics with Mr. Beagan By: Matt W. Lego robotics is fun, exciting, and you get to have pizza when you stay to work on your robot late. When you start robotics, you’re probably thinking of what you could be doing in this magical room of wonder. Ok, so it’s only the stem room. When you look around this magical room, you are probably thinking of what you could be doing here. When you walk into the stem room, you see machines, computers, and tons of pictures of his former classes that were successful. Now I’ll tell you just about robotics. On your first day of robotics, the very first thing you do when you walk in is build. You are building the obstacles that your robot has to complete. You build your robot and program it to do certain action including throwing a ball in a net, inserting a key, and opening a door. At the end of programing, testing, and improving, you go to a big tournament. At the tournament, you show off your robot by trying to complete the same obstacles that your team practiced in the stem room. After the tournament, if you win an event, you get a Lego trophy which you can see in the top right hand corner of this article. Even if you don’t win something, you still get to take a picture with Mr. Beagan and your team. Lego robotics is so fun and so interesting, I wish I could do Lego robotics all the time. Facts About Bullying 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. If your being bullied tell a teacher don’t hold it in . Bullies were sometimes bullied by another bully or by their parents. Bullies are not bad people they just act like bad people. Stand up for yourself, but no fighting. That will make you a bully and you wouldn’t like that. Not all bullies hurt you with their hands or feet. Sometimes they text you or pass notes. Bullies will not stop until you ask an adult for help! Times Have Changed By: Rylee Things have changed A LOT since the 1800s. Here are a list of a few things that have changed. There were no phones or laptops. You get the fact, that it was a very sad time. A lot of the women didn’t get to go to School or vote. NOT FAIR!!!!!!! Women only wore dresses. Men thought that it wasn’t appropriate for girls to wear clothing that showed their legs. About 75% of the children died of a disease before the age of 6. There were no cars! There were no dum-dum. There were no movies. Instead of having 2-8 classes of each grade there was 1 class for mixed grades, Kindergarten through 8th grade. Women weren’t allowed to be a teacher if they were married and had kids. A lot of the wealthy people had slaves. 6 How to Make Friends HI!!! Do you want to be friends? Wait, I haven’t even told you my name or anything about me. Oh, so you want to know how to make friends? Okay I’ll tell you. The first thing you need to do is to think, “Who should I make friends with? Well, I would pick (What I think,) a kind friendly person (of your choice.) Then figure out how you are going to start your sentence. Hi my name is _________, would you like to be friends? Or What’s your name? My name is_______ would you like to be friends? HOW TO MAKE YOUR FRIEND LIKE YOU So, I told you about how to start your first sentence. Now I am going to tell you about making your friend like you. The first thing you need to do is to find out what your friend likes. If you like the same thing or have a connection to it, maybe you can share it with your friend. That’s how I would start making your friend like you. Why Happiness is Good For You By: Luke R. You will make more friends if people see you are happy. It has been scientifically proven that you will live longer if you are happy. Being happy is a key part of becoming popular. If you are happy, you will get invited to more parties and have more fun. Everything will go your way if you are happy.* You will find that it is easier to be funny if you are happy. Happy=awesome Happy=funny Happy=swag Being happy just generally makes you awesome . *(I’m not going to guarantee that!) 7 Life-Bound Planet By: Maggie The earth is a resource, not something we can torment! The earth is an exquisite work of art, a wonderful world made up of many integrate eco systems. The earth used to be a hot world of lava and ash, like a fiery inferno. But now, it is a wonderful blue and green exquisite planet and we should be thankful that we are so lucky to have this wonderful world to live in. If we are to sustain our population on earth then we need to take care of it! I might sound crazy as I’m saying this but I’m not. Even if you just pick up a little piece of trash on the ground it will help. We are polluting our atmosphere every day when we ride in a gas-using car or, burn your trash or even run a factory. But there is still hope as long as you pitch in, if you don’t burn your trash and get a battery-powered car or maybe plant a tree. By planting a tree you are helping our atmosphere, because trees produce most of the air we breathe. So please pitch in and rescue our crippled planet. WHATS A SUPERNOVA? Well, a supernova is a lunar explosion that briefly outdoes an entire galaxy. It radiates as much energy as the Sun, or as much as an ordinary star is expected to produce over its entire life span. It will fade from view over several weeks/months. How is a supernova created? A supernova can occur when the core of a massive star collapses or a white dwarf (A star the size of Earth) in a binary system absorbs too much matter from its companion and a gravitational collapse is triggered. 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT SUPERNOVAS!!!!!!!!! By: Cameron 1. When a supernova explodes it becomes a black hole! 2. The first stars, 14 billion years ago became nebulas. 3. Betelgeuse is the closest supernova at six hundred forty light years away! 4. Supernovas are stars that eventually explode!!!!!! 5. The sun that gives the earth heat will never become a supernova!!!!! Hope you enjoyed! To find out more go to www.Wikipidia.com COMPLETELY USELESS FACTS THAT COULD SOMEHOW HELP YOU IN LATER LIFE The phrase bring home the bacon was originally started when a twelfth century priest rewarded a newly married couple with a side of bacon. A thirteen year old boy in Europe once found a tooth growing out of his left foot. You can test a cranberry to see if it’s ripe by bouncing it. If it bounces, the cranberry is ripe. The scientific name for Gorilla is Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla. Leonardo DeVinci wrote backwards, (as an adult,) in all his journals. In the Amazon River, there is such a thing as a Pink River Dolphin. In 2002, a man opened a fake bank and took in 650,000 U.S. dollars before he was caught by the police. July is National Ice Cream Month. Squirrels run up trees faster than they do on land. It takes about seven seconds for food to travel to your stomach, once you swallow. 8 You Won’t Believe It But … Littering has become a big problem because it is harming the earth. When people litter, it makes the animals sick. The more we litter the more the earth gets dirty. When you litter the ocean, it is not as clean as it could have been if we stop littering. The land and ocean we have to share is getting very dirty. The earth needs help bigtime. There are many ways you can stop pollution. You can pick up what you dropped and put it in the nearest trash can. Even if you think what you’re going to do is too small, it’s still helping the environment. If your friend just leaves their garbage, tell them to pick it up and you will be helping the earth. When you’re out on a walk, eating or drinking something, throw it away or recycle it. It takes a lot for people to clean the streets. When you have a piece of trash don’t litter, throw it away, so we can keep America clean. The earth needs help it can start with you. Facts -75% of people litter on picnics or just whenever. -People who litter are called litter bugs. -Men ages 8-36 are more likely to litter. Recycling can help Recycling is a good way to prevent littering because it gets rid of some trash, and the You Won’t Believe This But… By: Yu Tong THE IPHONE 6 PLUS ACTUALLY BENDS!!!!!! You might think this is a lie but it is true! People who didn’t believe that the IPhone 6 Plus bend wasted their money just to see their phone bend. The reason is because they designed the phone with a kind of metal called aluminum (used to make doorknobs and other things like license plates, car bodies, axles and motorcycles) which causes the phone to bend. Therefore if you don’t believe in this and think that this is all made up you will be wasting a lot of money. In conclusion, I DID WARN YOU. Before After YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE IT BUT SHOULD CHORES BE A LAW Kids in Spain soon may HAVE to do chores as a law. People who say yes to chores being a law have one good reason, kids do not help out enough .People that say no to chores as a law have a good reason to .The government is not boss of us. Victor T says ‘no because parents should make the decision because what if you were good all week and you still have to do your chores’. Sophie D says otherwise ‘you can earn money that way. ‘ So you “ve heard both sides of the story. there are no right or wrong to this topic. 9 By Kylie Leatherback Turtles Are in Grave Danger! Leatherback turtles are facing extinction! They have managed to live for millions of years but are endangered and only have a population of 20,000 – 30,000. The leatherback turtle is known as the largest marine turtle and is one of the largest living reptiles. The leather back turtle is found ordinarily in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans and in tropical regions. They can also be found in the Mediterranean Sea in tropical or temperate waters. Their diet is mainly jellyfish, aquatic plants and small animals. Leatherback turtles are in biggest danger because of humans. Sometimes swallowing plastic, tar, oil, rubber, getting caught in fish nets and getting in nasty collisions with boats, all revolving around humans. The poor turtles don’t have any defense for themselves! They have a few other predators such as sharks, bacteria, and diseases, but humans are the real reason their number is decreasing. Leatherback turtles live to be around 40 years old and usually grow to be 7 feet in length, 3 to 5 feet in width and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Their proper name is Demochelys coriacea, but are usually referred to as Leatherback. The leatherback is a reptile and carnivore that can dive to amazing depths up to 4,200 feet. They can also stay under water for 85 minutes at a time. Leather back turtles lay about 12 clutches with 65 to 85 eggs in each clutch. When the baby turtles hatch they try and find their way to the ocean to safety, but usually only very few make it into adulthood, for when they hatch they are very vulnerable, since they are defenseless. I hope you have learned lots, and to keep an open mind about the leatherback turtles who are slowly decreasing every minute. They need support! Anything helps, donating to reptile societies or even warning people you know who fish to be cautious of them to avoid accidents. Remember, the key to owning a pet is to care for it and love it. And there you go know you know how to go on www.AllAbout Sharks.com 10 Mrs. Puff from SpongeBob is Endangered!!! By Mrs. Puff, I actually mean the real puffer fish, or blow fish that are endangered. Not many people talk about puffer fish so I’ve decided to start the conversation, for all you new people that know nothing about puffer fish I’ll tell you. Puffer fish are a type of fish that ingest a great amount of water and turn into a huge ball twice their normal size to escape predators. They have spikes around them that are highly poisonous, so don’t think that’s not a good technique. If you’re wondering “Why they don’t just swim fast?” well it’s because they’re slow and have a clumsy swimming style which makes them vulnerable to predators. They don’t live around oceans that are cold. So that would mean that their natural habitats are commonly found in Japan, China, Taiwan, Philippines, and the Caribbean. Their main diet is algae and other small bacteria. Since you now know what puffer fish are, I should tell you why they’re endangered. Puffer fish numbers are diminishing because in Japan they make an expensive food called Fugu. Parts of a puffer fish are deadly and poisonous, so if they’re deadly and poisonous only the best chefs that know everything about a puffer fish can cut what is not at all deadly. Even though puffer fish is expensive, many people still love to eat it. A huge amount of people have passed away because they have eaten the wrong parts, their predators are not lucky also. One bite could lead them to death. If you see a puffer fish, you should leave them alone happy and peaceful to stay alive. I hope you tell somebody else about this article and stop what has been happening to them. You won’t believe it but…ligers are really…. By Makenna Yeah. What’s a Ligers, you don’t know. I’ll tell you a little bit about them. A Liger is a lion and a tiger. The first born liger was born at the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City. Her name was Shasta, she was not only the first born liger but… was the first born in the U.S.A. Now there are way more ligers in the world except Shasta. They’re spreading all around the world. Now that you know a little more about ligers, figure out about other mixed animals, and write about them! Dogs By: Maggie You probably know that taking care of a dog is hard work, if you had or have a dog then you probably got that “talk” with your parents. Some dogs are much clumsier than others, I know a dog who’s name is Flopsy and when she walks she usually walks for a little bit and then lays down clumsily. She also did a backflip off the couch several times. Flopsy is a very hilarious dog. 11 Horses Horses are wonderful animals. They are sweet, kind, amazing, and quite beautiful. You can ride them, feed them, tame them, and do almost anything with them. There are a lot of different, interesting facts about horses. Like what they eat, drink, what types of sicknesses they can get, and how to take care of them. My family has two. One is Dandy and the other is Nimble. Nimble has a problem with his eye, so I can’t ride him yet. But I usually ride him up to the nursery because I live right behind it. Horses eat food like: grain, apples, carrots, grass, hay, sometimes some people give their horses sticky stuff called molasses which is actually very good for them. They also have this powdery stuff, I don’t know what it’s called, but it can help them a lot with what their problem is. One of my horses has a little problem with his eye; but the powdery stuff is helping a lot. Here is a picture of horses roaming free in the plains of New Mexico I love horses. Horses are my LIFE. Horses are my life because when I think of horses or ride them, it inspires me. It makes me feel that I can do anything that I want. Everything. And if I try it, and like what I chose to do, I would want to KEEP doing it. Even if I mess up once or twice, I would keep TRYING! Because that’s the kind of person I am. And I don’t care what other people think. Sometimes people are the kind of person who boss people around. If people don’t like horses, I don’t care. Why should I care? I’ve got my hobbies, and they’ve got theirs. If I want to ride horses than I will. Most people don’t know how to ride horses; or even lunge them. Some people don’t even know what a lunge is. But that’s ok. Before I was riding horses, I didn’t know what a lunge is either. For example, a lunge is something you use to warm up horses before a race, horse show, or riding. It tells the horse that he/she has to pay attention, and also tells them who’s boss or who’s in charge. My horse Nimble is very stubborn. He doesn’t listen to a word I say; so I whip ‘em! I don’t whip him to be mean, I do that kind of harsh thing to wake him up, get him movin’. And I yell a bit to tell him what to do. And THEN he listens! My horse Dandy listens all the time. If only Nimble could do that! Anyway, Dandy listens to everything I say. For those who don’t know what a whip is, a whip is something long and has a knot on one of the ends. Also, whips have one thick end that you hold, and gets skinnier, and skinnier all the way down until the knot. Dandy is my mom’s horse and Nimble is mine. On his stall, there’s a clip to keep it closed, and it’s golden. So I call him my golden pony. My horses have longer names but we just call them by their nicknames rather than saying “A Dandelion” and “Jack Be Nimble” all the time. So we call them by their nicknames, ‘Nimble” and “Dandy.” One day, (AKA, yesterday, November 23, 2014) I was in between Nimble and the edge of his stall. And when he whipped his head up, WHACK!!! I hit my head right on the edge of his stall! It felt so bad, I got dizzy, and thought I had a concussion! ~*~ 12 Basketball Basketball is a specific sport that you ONLY use your hands and feet. When you play basketball, the objective is to try to get the most points as possible in one hour. The team with the most points in one hour wins. Before the free throw line there’s a big, colored box. That is called the paint. Two point shots are in front of the outside line of the court. The outside line is called the three point line. That is when you shoot the basketball into the hoop from that range, you score three points for your team. Playoffs are super important in your season. In playoffs, there’s quarter finals, semifinals and the finals. The finals is when two teams that won all series play up to seven games. If one team wins four times in the finals, they’re the champions. I hope you’ll learn the basics and play basketball. How to Face Your Fears I was afraid to do my cart wheel on the high beam in gymnastics. I kept telling myself that I could do it but I kept falling off. I imaged that I was on low beam. I told my coach and they walked me through it. It is best when you have to tell an adult that you trust. My coach helped me and I am not scared but I do not land it all the time. I thought I was going to hurt myself but I kept thinking about the positives. It took a lot of work and practice but I got better every day and now I can do it. I hope you can now face all your fears like I learned to do. Cheer Leading Zoey B. First thing, cheer leading is hard work especially if you are competitive. If you are thinking of doing cheer leading you need to wonder, do you have the time? Cheer leading practice is usually all week in the summer (not the weekends) and when school starts, three days per week. Second thing, are you too sensitive? It is hard when you fall, and you certainly will fall. You have to be strong. Third, you are separated in groups because of age or how good you are. So depending on your group you get different uniforms. Tiny might though mighty mite you have short sleeve with a body suit under and a ruffled skirt. Junior peewee through peewee you get a long sleeve shirt and a flat skirt. When you find out what your team is you have to get along because you do a lot of things as a group for example, stunting and routines. For competitions you might get worried, but once you start you get used to it. You’ll get scored on your motions, stunting and facials. You have to be a good sport because you might not win every game or every competition. Now that you know about cheerleading, are you able to be a cheerleader. Providence friars By: William The AFC champs of 2013, with the unstoppable force Bryce Cotton, are undeniably the best team in college basketball you shall ever know. Providence has been an amazing team so far with many seniors advancing to the NBA. Some famous names include Ryan Gomes, Marshon Brooks and Mike Riordan. Great coaches lead the way like Rick Pitino and the current coach Ed Cooley. I’ve been to practices and games and sometimes I think is this pros. I thought we parked in Providence Place not the Celtics court. Let’s talk players, many pros you could relate to the Friars whether it’s a practice or a game, some names are LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neil and Larry Bird and it’s all thanks to their head coach Ed Cooley. He has brought them where they’ve never been before like the AFC championship and they have better stats than ever. Hope you get to see a game soon and remember it’s a cheaper way of seeing what pros play like. 13 The day my hero left By cooper This amazing story is about an amazing man so you better love it. Okay let’s begin, on an early September day, starts like always with me practicing baseball in my Derek Jeter jersey and my New York Yankees cap. After a long fun day of practice, I trot back to my lovely small home. I felt so tired, I go downstairs and lay down on my furry brown couch and watch TV. A few seconds later my eyes burst open when my father awoke me with a wide white envelope. He slowly rips the envelope like it was pretty important. Then he tells me to close my eyes. I’m thinking what could it be? Question marks are floating everywhere in my mind. Then he says to open my eyes…BLINK!!!!!!!! I see Sunday baseball tickets to Fenway Park to see… my favorite, my idol, the guy who made me play baseball, DEREK JETER’S FINAL GAME IN ALL OF BASEBALL HISTORY!!! I almost faint when I see the tiny words on the red tickets. “THANK YOU SO MUCH! YOU’RE THE BEST DAD EVER” I shouted to him. That was the moment I found I was going to Derek Jeter’s finale baseball game of his carrier. A few days went by, I was counting the days until I was walking into Fenway Park. The next beautiful morning I slowly trotted over to my snowboard poster. I had my red expo marker in my hand ready to cross out yesterday until I saw today was… SUNDAY!! My dad shouted out to me” time to go to the baseball game!” Right in the speed of light I ran over to my kitchen where my dad was in his Yankees t-shirt and his wide Yankees cap. I was in my Derek Jeter jersey with my New York Yankees cap of my own. I ran over to my black front door and quickly opened the door and sprinted out the door and rushed into my dad’s car and we hit the road immediately. “SNOOORRRRR!!!” I shouted. The car ride felt like we were riding our car to the sun! After I went right back to sleep my dad shouts to me to open my eyes to look out the window that’s when I see the gigantic green wooded stadium towering over our heads. After I saw the Red Sox Fenway Park my skinny stomach starts to make noises and rumbles so much it’s like there is a mini earthquake inside my tummy! We stop at a little burger diner and I had a delicious vanilla milkshake a medium yummy cheese burger. After we rushed out of the dinner, we headed towards the stadium. On are walk we saw millions and millions of people wearing Derek Jeter jerseys all around. We finally get out of the very large crowd at the tickets booth, we rang up our red tickets and that was when we make it through into Fenway Park. We didn’t waste any time so we ran to find our seats. Sadly we ended up behind a wide pole blocking most of my view of the game, but I’m optimistic and thought how amazing it is that I’m at the baseball game. The game shortly started and then over the intercom they chose a little kid and that kid walked up to a small microphone and he shouted PLAY BALL!! And the game began. The intercom showed the Yankee’s starting lineup. Batting first is Ichero Suzuki and then… DEREK JETER and the crowd burst out cheers and yelling!! Then after the announcer read the rest of the players. Ichero walked up to the mound and the game officially started! 14 The day my hero left Continued … By cooper A few innings later Ichero walked up to the mound again with the score Yankees winning. There went the pitch and Ichero banged a triple with Derek Jeter up to bat. The pitch is just right and Derek swung and hit a bouncer into the air. The third basemen try’s to grab the ball in the air but he MISSED!!!!! The crowd screamed!!! Derek hit a single which makes Ichero come home which makes Derek Jeter have a RBI and makes him come off the field to switched runners with Brian McCann. Derek Jeter said goodbye to baseball and baseball said goodbye to him. The game continued with the Red Sox trying to come back with the score of 5 to 8 Yankees. The final inning ends with a pop up to end the game. When the game finished we ran to sneak an open seat right next to the Yankees dugout to maybe get an autograph. We had luck!! We found a seat and got ready to see Derek Jeter. He was only a couple yards away, he was crowded with people everywhere taking photos and talking to him with small microphones. Minutes later when Derek’s interviews were over he slowly walked back into the Fenway Park clubhouse, he stopped right in front of me and gave me a high five and right after that very awesome moment I was speechless. I was still standing but I fainted standing up. I was crowded head to toe with people getting autographs. Slowly later he walked back in and that was the last time I saw Derek Jeter. My dad and I were walking down the street after the game going to our car when I couldn’t stop thinking, “I HIGHFIVED DEREK JETER!!!!!!!!!” THE END! 15 The Science Behind One Direction Fans By Ben Of course I began with the question of how One Direction is able to attract a whole ocean of low self-esteem fans before I wrote this article. I am incredibly annoyed by their fans and honestly I was puzzled there wasn’t a flock of teenage boys chasing after Taylor Swift or the cup song girls. So I went ahead and I researched psychology and I found something shocking. I did some background research in addition but I found an article called http://thelead.blogs.cnn.com/2013/09/02/the-brain-science-behind-one-directions-legion-of-fans/ "Developmentally at this time teenagers are surging with emotion," a child phycologist quoted in the informative. This explains a survival tactic I had researched called pre-selection, it is a natural instinct not only women, but all the female living beings have. I saw an analysis to fish, a female fish mates with the male fish with the brightest color (it means it is healthier.) If the female fish comes across a male fish that appears to have the same amount of color as another one or has a hard time judging; it will choose the fish that other female fish go after. Since young teenage girls are surging with emotion, this is most likely effective. (Don’t date at 5 th grade kids.) Another thing I learned was something called neediness, a concept explained by an amazing scientific guy named VSauce. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGK2KprU-To He stated the fact about not getting something you want will make you want more. Otherwise the cheesy tactic most men and women try to use to get girls, hard-to-get. Which in a way if you were to make a person like you as they liked chocolate but didn’t give the person yourself or the chocolate, they would want more. So why am I talking about this? Because entering 7 th grade and seeing all the stupid short term relationships make me wonder the science of love, and I learn a little more every day from doing research. The info I just gave out are from famous PUA (Pick Up Artists) who are dedicated to just getting dates. 16 Nacho One day, a guinea pig named Nacho was relaxing in his cage at the Potter League. He had the company of Oreo and Nibbles which were two other guinea pigs, but they were not very popular. Nacho wanted to be famous, like his brothers and sisters that got to stay with their mother at the house. Nacho had escaped, so he had not gotten to be a show pig. One day, he was longing to be taken by a nice person that could make him FAMOUS! A girl named Amanda walked into the shelter with her mom and dad. Nacho had seen the girl before, and he knew that she would peer through the bars of his cage while looking at him longingly. He didn’t know that soon his life would change forever. Two years later… Nacho squealed. He wanted Amanda to feed him!!! He squeaked as she breathlessly walked into the room carrying a full bag of carrots. Nacho did not need to be told; they were for him. She took him out and grabbed a giant carrot. She waggled it in front of his face until he snatched it with great hunger. In less than two minutes, the carrot was gone… One month later… Nacho gulped. He was at a rodent chomp competition. He saw the carrot in the judge’s hand. When they called number 10, Amanda pulled on his leash and he obediently walked forward into the ring. The judge held the carrot in his left hand and a stopwatch in the other. He put the carrot on the ground, looked at the stopwatch and counted down from five. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO!!! Nacho instantly devoured the carrot in less than ten sec. the other competitors booed, but the crowd screamed and screamed. Amanda looked at his time and yelled. They had won!!! All of a sudden, nacho was in the center of fans that wanted his autograph. Three days later, Amanda and Nacho were relaxing in a luxury mansion when a massive crowd of people ran screaming into the mansion waving pieces of paper and sharpies. Amanda’s lawyer came in and threatened to sue all of the selfish unwanted visitors. Nacho, meanwhile, was relaxing in a lukewarm bath when suddenly, the water turned off. He knew it had turned off so that the two of them and Amanda’s parents could save a lot of money. Suddenly, Nacho saw a mouse struggling to get her baby into their hole. Nacho leapt out of the tub and scampered over to the struggling mouse to help. He nudged the mouse and it reluctantly ran in. the word spread and three days later he was the world’s biggest hero. The heroic guinea pig was not pleased with himself. To be continued… By: Amanda YOU WON’T BELIEVE THIS BUT… You won’t believe this but ice cream has just been outlawed in Rhode Island!!! If you have an ice cream cone in your hand this very minute, I suggest you put it down right now. If you don’t you’ll likely be hunted down by the cops, so slipping it into your friends backpack is fine to. Now, now, you’re probably all worked up about ‘’no ice cream’’ thing so listen here… Frozen yogurt is still legal!! Now, if you’re STILL mad at me for telling you this silly, silly, law; I might suggest you move to a different state where ice cream is legal. {May I suggest New Hampshire? It has lovely scenery!] Just Kidding!!! 17 The Banana Split Have you ever done the banana split on a swing at a playground? Well I have and it is so fun! You should try it. Get comfortable because this will be a long story. One day as my friend and I were at the playground we were so bored and my friend Jada came up with an idea and she said ” Let’s do the banana split.” Alexis said,“ “What’s that? ”Jada said, “The banana split is when: You are on the swing with a friend and your friend puts her leg on you. Then you put your leg on your friend. Next, your friend puts her other leg on you and you put your other leg on your friend. Next you and your friend ask a teacher or a friend to push you. And there you are you are officially doing the banana split. If you are ever bored at recess you can ask a friend if they would like to do the banana split and then you now have something to do at recess with a friend when you are ever bored and have nothing to do at the playground Alexis A Scary Story By: Nick B. Once upon a time, there was a family called the McDonalds. They moved to a house in this town just six weeks ago, and they are ready to move out. They fear that their house is one of the many, many houses in the small state of Rhode Island… that is haunted! The McDonalds have two kids, Charlie and Joshua. One night, while Joshua was doing his homework, he thought he saw a man staring at him through the window. The man looked young, maybe in his twenties, and he looked like he had already died. The man was dressed like he had been a soldier, maybe from the American Revolution. But what scared Joshua was the fact that a war had took place right where the McDonalds house had been built! He immediately took off up-stairs to tell his mom the scary news. She went down-stairs to take a peek, and when she got to the window…. The man was still there! The next day, Mr. McDonald was sitting on his front porch relaxing. He was reading an article in the newspaper. All of the sudden, out of the corner of his eye, he saw the two rocking chairs to each side of him rocking on their own! When Mr. McDonald told Mrs. McDonald, that is when they decided that it was time to move out. One morning, Charlie had just woken-up when he heard two voices that he had never heard before. He got frightened and ran down-stairs to tell his mom. When he got downstairs he realized it was just the people that his parents were selling their house to. Then, the next day, the McDonalds were packing up there last boxes and getting ready to move. Joshua was packing the last of his toys when he heard a loud bang come from his room! He ran upstairs to check it out. He saw the same man that he saw a couple of days ago when he was doing his homework! Joshua picked up his plastic sword and charged at the man! The man jumped out the window and hit the ground hard. So hard that he died, again. Finally, it was the day of the move. When they got to their new house, they regretted their choice to move, because there was a family of ghosts sitting in the living room! 18 BREAKING NEWS... DOG SAVED GUINEA PIG FROM ALMOST GETTING EATEN AT HUMPHLYS CHOMPING RESTAURANT It all started on a sunny day in Middletown, RI. A guinea pig named Nacho was having the time of his life. He was going to The National Guinea Pig Hotel, a first class hotel in San Francisco, CA to spend a day or two with his friend Nibbles. Once Nacho got off the plane in CA the power went out and there was total blackness. People were screaming and guinea pigs were screeching. Then Nacho realized he was trapped with other guinea pigs. “Help!!!!!” the guinea pigs screeched but Nacho just stayed quiet. “Now what do we have here?” a voice said. Nacho must have fallen asleep. He had no clue where he was. “Well I have a lot of guinea pigs to cook”, another voice said. What did they mean by cook Nacho wondered? Was there another meaning for cook that he didn’t know of? He needed his dictionary. Luckily he packed it in his bag….. which he left back at the airport which was a long way away especially for a plump guinea pig like Nacho. Then he felt something. It was a warm feeling. It felt good at first but then, it got hotter and hotter until Nacho let out a super loud “SCREEEEEEEEEEACH!!!!!!!” It was so loud the chef had to come over and see what has happened. “What in the name of piggy is going on here? if you keep on yapping I am going to get fired! Now I am going to turn the grill up so I can cook you and give you to the hungry guests who want to eat you” he said. “Excuse me what did you say?” Nacho asked. Of course it came out, “squeak, squeak.” He was curious to know if there was another meaning for cook, then he spotted it, could it be? A dictionary! “Now it is time to chop you up to cook you……. again. The first time was a pre-heat” the chef said. Before the chef took Nacho, something zoomed in from the window and crashed into the dishes and they shattered onto the floor, making a loud crash! Nacho could not make out the shape because he was getting tossed and turned. To be honest this chef does not know how to properly hold a guinea pig. Soon the moving object came closer. It turned out to be a dog. A black dog. A BIG black dog. “Do not worry little one. Laddie is here to save you” the dog barked. The named appeared to sound funny to Nacho so he started laughing his head off. “No time for laughing now kid, this is super serious. Do you want to get your head chopped off or do you want to go home?” Laddie asked. “Home!” Nacho said. “Okay now get on my back and then we can get the heck outta here” Laddie said. Then all of a sudden they were in the air. “Why are we in the air?” Nacho asked. Laddie didn’t answer. “Why is your name so weird?” Nacho asked again. Nachos mind was filled with questions to ask Laddie. “Why is your name a piece of food? Oh yeah because you are a nacho flavored Guinea Pig” Laddie sneered. Soon Laddie saw the National Guinea Pig Hotel and dropped Nacho off. “If you ever need me bark twice” Laddie said. “I am a Guinea Pig, I don`t bark, I squeal” Nacho corrected him. To this day, that day was the day that they will both never forget. By: Alex 19 FILL IN THE BLANK!!! #2 By Michael F. If you want to submit your answers hand them into a shoe box in the library. Her two favorite parts were, "The Fluff of Allegiance” and breakfast. (which she always had 14 mini chocolate chip pancakes with extra whipped cream!) One day Lily went outside to ask the gardener, Mr. Seed, if he could plant two s’more plants, which are plants with s’mores growing on them. She went to find her best friend Maria, who she found next to their favorite tree that they had named LANI. Humblebundle.com is a very nice website where you can buy digital copies of games or books for a very cheap price. During the scholastic book bundle I only paid $1 for audiobooks of Hunger Games, 39 Clues Book 1, and some other books (If you pay more you can get more books, I got 4 books by paying $1) You can pay for games using Amazon Payments, Paypal, or Credit Card. Just remember, most of the games you redeem, after you buy, are steaming and the audiobooks are in MP3 format. As a consumer I am incredibly satisfied with my purchase of $32 dollars for games. There was even a sale where I got 17 sonic games for $30 dollars and the other two dollars went to another collection of games. By the way, you can choose how the money is sent, to Humble Bundle or to selected charities. I can assure you THIS IS NOT A SCAM. It is a nice charity that gives great perks that you can use for your own benefit at the Humble Bundle. Surf is Still Up BY: Neville Longbottom (Emily) Darn--its winter. I just began to work on my coffin trick. If that’s the situation you’re in then read on. People think that just because the water is cold that your seasons done. Errrrr, wrong! It actually means you have a whole season ahead of you! (If you are a beginner I’d suggest taking caution on the big waves.) Get a wetsuit and you are on. I know wetsuits cost over 50 dollars but it is soo worth it! Places you can get wetsuits are surf shops such as: or AMAZON. Have you ever gone out surfing in the winter? Well Micheal F has, and this is what he says about it: “It is really fun, usually there isn’t anyone in the water so it feels like you have the ocean to yourself. More storms occur in the winter and with more storms there are bigger waves and that means more surf, (obviously.”) He is right, the surf can be bigger out there. So get your board out and keep hanging loose!!! 22 THE WORLD OF MINECRAFT! PART 1 The first rule of Minecraft don`t dig strait DOWN or UP! The second rule is don’t swim in LAVA!
