42nd Annual Turkey Classic
Championship Meets
Nadadores Dominate Pro-Am
The Mission Viejo Nadadores won the KMSC Pro-Am
Classic, held in Lewiston, TX
on December 17-21, 2015, with
a score of 1207. This was nearly
twice the score of the second-place
team, Lakeside Aquatics (614).
The Nadadores also won the men’s
and women’s team competitions by
a similar margin, scoring 731 for
the men and 476 for the women.
The Nadadores started strong
right from the first night where
the women won every event, and
the men won all but one event on
day one, and broke several team
records throughout the meet. The
Nadadores kept the pressure on the
competition throughout the entire
meet.
On the first day of the meet,
Stephanie Peacock won the women’s 1000-yard freestyle in 9:23.50;
the relay team of Samantha Shelton, Andrea Felix, Jessica Epps,
and Peacock won the 800 freestyle
relay; and Felix, Siqi Qin, Epps,
and Shelton teamed up to take the
gold in the women’s 200 medley
relay in 1:44.50, setting a new Na1
dadores team records in the 15-18
and open divisions in the process.
The Nadadores men nearly
accomplished the same feat, winning the 1000 free and 800 free
relay and earning the silver in the
200 medley relay. However, the
men were impressive in their deep
sweep of the 1000 free led by an
amazing swim by Grant Shoults.
Shoults went 8:48.03, the second
fastest time ever recorded by a U.S.
swimmer 18 years old or younger.
This was the 10th fastest time for
any American swimmer ever. That
time also lowers the Nadadores
15-18 year-old 1000-yard freestyle team record, previously set
by Mike O’Brien in 1983. Shoults
was followed by teammates, Dan
O’Connor, who finished second in
8:59.20 and Logan Redondo, who
went 9:01.48 for third. Shane Forker finished fifth in 9:15.56, Marc
Morizono was sixth in 9:23.81,
and Matt Hales finished seventh in
9:25.70.
In the men’s 800 free relay,
the Nadadores A relay (Morizono,
Forker, Redondo, Shoults) finished

first (6:38.99) with the B relay
of M. Hales, Keyan Boniadi,
O’Connor, and Chua finishing third
in 6:53.25.
The Nadadores men had a
silver-medal finish in the men’s 200
medley relay. The A relay team of
Daniel Kim, Trent Pellini, Chua,
and Morizono finished second
(1:34.52).
On the second day of the
meet, the Nadadores continued
their winning ways by notching
wins in the men’s and women’s
400-yard individual medley, the
men’s and women’s 400-yard freestyle relay, and the men’s 200-yard
freestyle.
J. Epps won the women’s
400-yard individual medley in
4:17.15. Redondo won the corresponding men’s event in 3:53.21.
Redondo led another impressive
championship final showing for
the Nadadores with O’Connor
finishing third (3:57.99), Kim
sixth (4:03.20), and Forker seventh
(4:03.61).
Shoults continued his dominance by winning men’s 200-yard
freestyle in 1:34.72. Shoults was
joined in the championship final by
teammates Logan Redondo who
finished fifth (1:37.91) and Marc
Morizono in eighth (1:39.73).
The Nadadores women
and men each won their 400-yard
freestyle relay event. The women’s
relay of Victoria Epps, Felix, Peacock, and Shelton won in 3:23.95.
Kim, Shoults, Redondo, and Morizono teamed up to win the men’s
event in 3:02.07, breaking the Nadadores previous open team record
of 3:05.40. The mark was previously set in 2008 by Tom Shields,

The Nadadores had amazing time drops and exciting races at
the Southern California Swimming
(SCS) Club Championships held
December 4-6 at the Rose Bowl
Aquatic Complex in Pasadena. One
of the most exciting races was the
13-14 girls 200-yard breaststroke.
Nadadores Caitlin Caruso and
Devon Forker battled the entire distance for a down-to-the-wire finish.
Caruso edged out Forker by 0.10
seconds to win in 2:23.86.
A few Nadadores were
crowned SCS champions in addition to Caruso. Ella Ristic won
the 13-14 girls 200-yard freestyle
in 1:50.80, and Noah Brune won
the 13-14 boys 1000 freestyle in
9:36.35 and the 400 individual
medley (IM) in 4:10.09.
Along with Forker’s runnerup finish in the 200 breast, were
several other Nadadores silver
medalists--all in the 13-14 girls division. Mia Ristic finished second
in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.60.
The 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays and the 200-yard medley relay
all finished second. Relay members
on all of these relays were M. Ristic, Caruso, Ivy Tran, and E. Ristic.
Forker also had a bronze medal
finish in the 400 IM, finishing in
4:31.84. Keep reading to find out
about all of the Nadadores finalists.

Mission Viejo Nadadores
swimmers, Chris Hales, Matt
Hales, and Katie McLaughlin, were
all honored at the USA Swimming
Golden Goggle Awards held at the
J.W. Marriott, Los Angeles—L.A.
Live, on Sunday, November 22.
Chris and Matt Hales
received the Hero Award for
their work founding and running
Goggles for Guppies. Goggles for
Guppies began in 2011 as a service
project to help prevent childhood
drowning. The Hales brothers have
worked ever since to ensure that
free swim suits, caps, and goggles
are provided to at-risk children
in order to eliminate the financial
barriers to participating in learn-toswim programs offered by Make
a Splash local partners throughout
the U.S. This organization has
grown to distribute more than
16,000 pieces of swimming equipment to underprivileged children.
McLaughlin won a Golden
Goggles Award for her part in the
Best Relay Performance of the
Year. The Relay Performance of
3
the Year Award is given to the best
relay performance of the year,
male or female, in the finals of a
relay event, with emphasis given to
those relays performing at World
Championship meets. The women’s
800-freestyle relay team of Missy
Franklin, Leah Smith, McLaughlin,
and Katie Ledecky joined forces
to win the gold at the 2015 FINA
World Championships held last
summer in Kazan, Russia. Their
time was 7:45.37, just 3.29 seconds
short of the world record. Franklin,
Smith, and McLaughlin kept the
relay close, giving Ledecky only
a 0.34 second deficit to overcome,
which she did quickly. The American relay went on to win the event
by approximately three seconds.
The Golden Goggle Awards
are like the Oscars of swimming.
This year’s event was hosted by
comedian and actor, Anders Holm,
and featured a performance by Andra Day. You may recognize Holm
from movies including The Intern

Whitney, Solaire Nazarenus-Olson, and Savannah DuPuis show their prerace swagger.
On Sunday, September 20,
seven Nadadores competed in the
elite division of the RCP Tiburon
Mile in Raccoon Strait in Tiburon,
CA. The Tiburon Mile is one of the
most competitive and prestigious
open water events in the world.
This year’s race featured Olympians and swimmers from Russia,
Australia, Germany, and the U.S.
Swimmers start the race on Angel
Island and cross Raccoon Strait to
finish in Tiburon.
There was an extremely
strong ebb tide during the event, so
only the elite division was allowed
to compete. Races for all other divisions were cancelled. Despite the
extremely talented competition, the
Nadadores won the team trophy by
a large margin.
In the elite women’s division, Ashley Twitchell repeated as
elite female champion, finishing in
22:40, winning the $2500 prize
for professional athletes. She also
won in 2013. The event was not
held in 2014. Twitchell and Becca
Mann battled throughout the race,
but Twitchell pulled away at the
finish to beat Mann by one second.
Stephanie Peacock finished fifth
in 23:25, Savannah DuPuis was
seventh in 25:42, Sammi Nassif finished eighth in 26:22, Ellie
Whitney was 11th in 27:37, and
Solaire Nazarenus-Olson finished
14th in 28:24.
In the men’s elite division, Dan O’Connor finished fifth
in 22:49. Austin Jones was eighth
in 24:33, Steven Derman finished
12th in 25:23, and Trent Pellini was
14th in 25:40.
Nadadores Head Coach,
Bill Rose, noted, “I’m very proud
of all of the swimmers standing
up to the difficult conditions, and I
was very, very happy with how all
of the Nadadores performed.”
MAC Renovation Update
Nadadores staff and Foundation members are continuing to
meet with representatives from the
City of Mission Viejo to discuss
finances, timing, and design of the
Marguerite Aquatic Center (MAC)
renovation project. The Fall 2015
issue of Mission Viejo Outlook
featured the MAC renovation as its
cover story. If you did not receive
a copy of Mission Viejo Outlook,
the story is available in the archive
news section of the Nadadores’
website.
You may also have noticed
some work being done around the
MAC. In September, crews visited
the complex to take soil samples
and to pave the drive between the
upper paved parking lot and the
lower dirt parking lot by the tennis
courts.
The MAC renovation master plan received positive feedback
from the Mission Viejo Community Services Commission at its
November meeting and from the
Planning and Transportation Commission in December. The next step
is for the City Council to approve
the design at their January meeting.
In the meantime, the Nadadores are continuing to meet with
the City of Mission Viejo regarding
the renovation of the MAC. Additionally, Nadadores staff is continuing to meet with multiple organizations within a 10-mile radius of
Mission Viejo to secure the best
possible pool space at the lowest
cost so that we are able to continue
training effectively and host meets
during the renovation.

Turkey Tradition Thrives in Mission Viejo

The Mission Viejo Nadadores hosted the 42nd Annual
TYR Turkey Classic Swim Meet in
Memory of Nadadores swimmer,
Jesse Reese, November 20-23 at
the Marguerite Aquatic Center. The
42nd annual event was a four-day
affair that upheld the tradition of
a fun, high-quality event that was
well-executed. Over the years,
many world record holders and
Olympians have competed at this
event, and this year was no exception.
U.S. National Team member and Nadadores swimmer,
Stephanie Peacock, dominated the
meet, winning all of her events.
These included the 50, 100, 200,
500, and 1650-yard freestyles.
U.S. National Junior Team
and Nadadores members Grant
Shoults and Samantha Shelton also
performed well. Shoults swam a
different line-up than he typically
swims at top-level meets; however,
he was still a major force winning
the 200-yard event of each stroke
(breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly,
and freestyle) as well as the 500yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, and
50-yard freestyle. Shelton finished
second behind Peacock in the 500yard freestyle.
The Nadadores had several
deep sweep finishes throughout the
meet. Some of the deepest sweeps
were in the distance events. In the
girls 13-14 500-yard freestyle, the
Nadadores swept the event, taking
the top seven spots with Ella Ristic
finishing first, Marybeth Johnson
second, Mia Ristic third, Natalie
Oien fourth, Devon Forker fifth,
Ivy Tran sixth, and Hannah Erickson seventh. The 13-14 girls also
took the top seven places in the

400-yard individual medley. The
top finishers in order were: Devon
Forker, Ella Ristic, Mia Ristic, Ivy
Tran, Marybeth Johnson, Caitlin
Caruso, and Junie Carlos. Not to be
outdone, the 15 and older girls took
the top 9 places in the 400-yard
individual medley. In order, the top
nine were: Vicky Gong, Victoria
Epps, Emily Baker, Andrea Felix,
Kyra Bernhardt, Savannah DuPuis,
Sami Nassif, Amy Qin, and Abby
Nugent. In the 1650 freestyle, the
15 and older girls won the top 13
places by the following (in order):
Peacock, DuPuis, Jessica Epps,
Emily Baker, Gong, Nassif, Bernhardt, Victoria Epps, Felix, Kendall
Peregrini, Hannah Ashbrook, Ashley Bergen, and Solaire NazarenusOlson.
In addition to fast swimming, participants and spectators
enjoyed beautiful Mission Viejo
fall weather, a snack bar full of
made-to-order grilled items, and
several booths with local vendors
including Competitive Aquatic
Supply, Hawaiian Shaved Ice,
Northwest Designs, and SwimLabs. Coaches and officials enjoyed a complimentary hospitality
bistro dining area with food freshly
made on-site and provided by local
restaurants including Rice Bowl
Express, All Star Pizza, and Tula
Market.

The Nadadores travelled to
Las Vegas, NV December 11-13 to
compete in the Southern California
Swimming Junior Olympic Championships. Everyone was grateful
to be competing in an indoor pool
as the temperatures outside were in
the 30’s each morning.
The Nadadores made the
most of their opportunities with
many swimmers returning to swim
in finals and many new personal
best times earned. This was a
great opportunity for many swimmers to experience competing in a
preliminary and final format, with
swimmers in all age groups earning
second swims.
Additionally, many Nadadores were Junior Olympic
champions including Junie Carlos,
Hanna Erickson, Dean Fujimoto,
Ryan Goh, Garrett Hartline, Tyler
Johnson, Dominic Morales-Ostergaard, Katie Nugent, Natalie Oien.

In a tight race in the women’s 200-yard freestyle, Mission
Viejo Nadadores Samantha Shelton
finished just 0.18 seconds behind
pro swimmer, Karlee Bispo, to take
the silver with a 1:45.50. Shelton
edged out teammate, Stephanie
Peacock who finished third in
1:45.74.
The Mission Viejo Nadadores continued their winning ways
on the third day. Peacock won the
women’s 500-yard freestyle in
4:36.89, just missing Chloe Sutton’s team record of 4:36.76. In the
men’s event, Shoults led another
Nadadores-dominated final, winning in 4:19.45. O’Connor was
third (4:22.43), Redondo fifth
(4:23.98), and Forker seventh
(4:33.97).
Shoults also won the men’s
200-yard individual medley in
1:48.05. His time missed breaking
the Nadadores team record currently held by Ken Takahashi by 0.07
seconds.
Although they finished third
in the event, the men’s 400-yard
medley relay team Kim, Pellini,
Min Zhi Chua, and Shoults lowered the Nadadores 15-18 year-old
team record to 3:27.86. The previous record of 3:34.00 has stood
since 2009, and was held by Lucas
Norman, J. Kim, Tom Shields, and
S. Wollkind. Meanwhile, in the
women’s 400-yard medley relay,
the team of Andrea Felix, Siqi Qin,
Jessica Epps, and Shelton took the
silver in 3:50.01.
Other bronze medal performances included Shelton’s third
place finish in the women’s 50-yard
freestyle in 22.87, just short of
Katie McLaughlin’s team record of
22.62 set at this meet last year. J.
Epps finished third in the women’s
200-yard breaststroke in 2:19.04.
Highlights of the final session included several Nadadores
medalist performances. Shoults finished second in the men’s 200-yard
butterfly with a 1:45.84 behind pro
swimmer, Bobby Bollier. Shelton
was the first amateur and third
overall finisher in the women’s
100-yard freestyle with a 49.62.
Redondo was third in the men’s
200-yard backstroke in 1:50.08.

Scholastic All-America Team Announced
(From left) Nick Norman, Grant Shoults, and Marc Morizono earned Scholastic All-America Team honors.
The 2014-2015 Scholastic
All-America Team was announced
in September by USA Swimming
and included three Mission Viejo
Nadadores. Swimmers must apply
to be considered as a Scholastic
All-America Team member, and
the award combines the athlete’s
accomplishment in school as well
as in the pool. There were 1,925
swimmers throughout the U.S.
named to the Scholastic All-America Team. All team members earn
three certificates and a bag tag.
Those who have been named to the
team three times receive a special
memento from USA Swimming.
For the Nadadores, Marc Morizono, (first year), Nick Norman (third
year), and Grant Shoults (second
year) were named to the team.
Nadadores take time out for a group photo after picking up trash and debris from the Oso Creek Trail.
The City of Mission
Viejo hosted its 12th annual InnerCoastal Clean-up Day on Saturday,
September 19. Approximately 200
volunteers, including about 50
swimmers from the Mission Viejo
Nadadores, worked to clean the
area along the Oso Creek Trail and
neighboring commercial centers.
This event is held annually in conjunction with the Coastal Clean-up
Day and an international clean-up
event that went on throughout the
world.
Nadadores and other volunteers registered at the trailhead
and then got right to work. Over a
period of about two hours, the Nadadores picked up trash and debris.
They formed a line and scoured the
creek, trail, and hillside so that no
trash would be missed. Nadadores
found everything from cigarette
butts to matresses and shopping
carts.
9
According to Denise Madson, Environmental Program Administrator for the Mission Viejo
Public Works Department, the
purpose of the Inner-Coastal Cleanup Day is not only to clean up trash
and debris in our community, but
also to educate residents about the
importance of picking up after ourselves and keeping our community
clean.
Even though Mission Viejo
is an inland community, it’s important for us all to remember that
things we discard improperly here
can end up in the ocean as it gets
blown or washed into storm drains
and creeks by rain and the those
waterways empty into the ocean.
This debris and trash can be harmful to marine wildlife. All in all,
volunteers collected about 200
pounds of trash and prevented it
from entering the ocean.

Going the Distance at Arena Pro Swim Series

The 2015-2016 Arena Pro
Swim Series began with competition at the University of Minnesota
Aquatic Center November 12-14.
This event featured an international field with several Olympians, including high-profile athletes
like Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte,
Katie Ledecky, and Missy Franklin. The meet also featured approximately 50 U.S. National Team
members including Nadadores
standout, Stephanie Peacock.
In a tough race on the final
day of the meet, Peacock won the
bronze in the women’s 800-meter
freestyle in 8:28.39 with the fifth
fastest time in the world. She was
just a few seconds behind Ledecky,
the current world record holder in
that event. Becca Mann finished
second with the second fastest
time in the world. Peacock had
other great swims, including her
fifth place finish in the women’s
400-meter freestyle in 4:08.23, the
ninth fastest time in the world. Peacock also had a ninth place finish in
the women’s 200-meter freestyle,
finishing in 1:59.93.
In the men’s 200-meter
butterfly, Grant Shoults won the
bronze in 2:00.41. Shoults was
just edged out by Chase Kalisz
(gold) and Michael Phelps (silver).
Shoults may have been a bit out
of gas when he raced the men’s
400-meter freestyle later in finals
that evening as he added nearly
six seconds from his prelims time,
but still managed to finish eighth.
Shoults also recorded a sixth place
finish in the men’s 1500-meter free
and qualified for the Olympic Trials with a 15:40.38. He also recorded a 12th place finish in the men’s
200-meter freestyle. Shoults was
seeded one spot ahead of Michael

real long course event of the year,”
said Mission Viejo Nadadores
Head Coach, Bill Rose. “It’s hard
to compare how well we performed
because normally we swim short
course this time of year. However, we did compare very well to
the world class swimmers at this
meet.”
For the third year in a row,
Southern California Swimming
(SCS) has named Mission Viejo
Nadadores Head Coach, Bill Rose,
as its Coach of the Year. The Kevin
Perry Coach of the Year Award is
given in honor of Coach Kevin Perry and is voted on by SCS member
coaches. Nominations are submitted by coaches’ representatives or
senior representatives from across
SCS. Additionally, all coaches who
have placed swimmers on the U.S.
National or U.S. Junior National
teams are automatically nominated.
The Kevin Perry Coach of
the Year Award is presented each
year to the coach who produces
the best swimmers and contributes the most in terms of service
and leadership to SCS and USA
Swimming. Coach Rose coached
Katie McLaughlin and Stephanie
Peacock to the U.S. National Team.
McLaughlin competed at the World
Championships last August in Kazan, Russia. McLaughlin earned a

Nadadores Break Records
The Nadadores set several
new records this season. These
outstanding athletes swam faster
than anyone in the nearly 48 years
of world class athletes who have
represented the Nadadores. Their
accomplishments are truly special.
Congratulations to all of these
athletes whose hard work, even on
days when they really didn’t feel
like it, has paid off for them and
our team in a most positive way.

Minion Mahem.
Young Nadadores and their siblings are ready to begin the Halloween
trick-or-treat parade around the pool decks.
This year’s Nadadores Halloween Parade was one of the most
successful yet. There were 175
swimmers and siblings from Swim
School to the 10 and Under Division who participated in the parade
around the pool decks. Costumed
swimmers trick-or-treated around
the pool deck receiving treats from
the swimmers and coaches from
the National team and parents.
After the parade, the Swim
School and Novice/Transition Division had a potluck and pool party at
the Teaching Pool. Swimmers got
to hang out and play. There was a
costume contest, mummy wrapping
contest, and plenty of treats for
everyone.
Coaches Chelsea, Jacqueline, Rebekah and Brittany dressed as the characters from the movie, Inside Out. As you can see Fear is missing but,
there is no fear in swimming!

New Coaches Join Nadadores Staff
Coach Courtney.
Coach Courtney recently started joined the Nadadores as Coach
Bryan’s Assistant Coach. Ironically, her swimming career started on
the Colony Red Hots, with Coach Bryan when she was seven years old.
However, her love for swimming really began when she returned to the
Red Hots in 2002, at the age of 12. As her passion for swimming grew,
she went on to coach for the Colony Red Hots from age 16-22; after
which she left to volunteer to teach English in Thailand. During her time
as both swimmer and coach for the Red Hots, the team won the Irvine
Swim League Championships seven consecutive years.
Courtney graduated from University of California, Santa Cruz in
2012 with a B.A. in psychology, and is currently working as an e-commerce coordinator for Marriott. She is thrilled to return to the pool deck
to help her very first coach coach the Nadadores.
Coach Irina Parfyonova joined the Mission Viejo Nadadores in
2015. Originally from Russia and being a competitive Cross Country
Skiing athlete, she brings strong mental toughness, self-control, determination, sportsmanship, and skill focus to the children she coaches. She
emphasizes how children can have fun, while staying focused and able
to understand that swimming is a technique driven sport. She encourages team effort in practices, while seeing each individual’s potential and
brings it to the maximum. Irina has great sense of humor and is passionate about coaching. She believes that sometimes you need to take two
steps back in that is fun to children.
In addition to coaching, Irina is a commodities, nutrition and
marketing specialist and a certified web designer. She has many years of
customer service experience while working for technology companies in
Northern California. Irina is also a personal trainer as she is enthusiastic
about athleticism and has a great desire to help others. She enjoys reading, travel, exercise, and a good laugh.
Coach Darian Primer was a swimmer for the Mission Viejo Nadadores for 11 years, from age 7 to 18. He worked his way through the
ranks and was a National Team member his last two years competing with
the Nadadores. During his time swimming for the Nadadores, Darian was
coached by much of the present day coaching staff and was able to learn
from each of their different coaching styles. Darian was a Division-1 CIF
qualifier in the 100-yard backstroke and sectional qualifier in the 200-meter backstroke. He graduated from Mission Viejo High School in 2015,
and is now attending Saddleback College, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. In his free time, he enjoys surfing, fishing, biking, and traveling.
Coach Darian.
Coach Michael.
15
Coach Michael Span began coaching while living in Virginia with
a city program that transitioned kids from lessons and beginner swimming to the local club swim team. Along with coaching this program, he
competed as a club and high school swimmer. He moved from Virginia to
California at the end of his sophomore year, leaving behind five varsity
school records in freestyle, backstroke, and relay events.
While in California, Michael swam for both the Mission Viejo
Nadadores and the Laguna Hills High School Varsity Swim Team. Michael finished his high school career with a varsity relay record. He also
competed with the Nadadores National Team.
After high school, Michael was a member of the Honors College
at Arizona State University studying Computer Science his freshman
year. He is now at Irvine Valley College studying economics and intends
to transfer to the University of California system.
Last summer, he began coaching with the Nadadores as the head
coach of one of the Satellite teams. He now coaches the London group,
and is excited to share everything he knows about the sport of swimming
and watch his swimmers achieve their goals.
Coach Danny.

Coach Danny Colvin came to the Mission Viejo Nadadores after
spending two years as Head Strength and Senior Sprint Coach for the
Buenaventura Swim Club. While at Buenaventura, Danny helped train
and coach four swimmers to their first Olympic Trials cuts, as well as Junior National and Sectional times. Danny spent the last three years as the
Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Ventura College Women’s Water
Polo Team. Last spring he became the Strength and Conditioning Coach
for the Ventura College Men’s Swim Team where he helped coach the
2015 California Community College Men’s Swimmer of the Year, Mitch
Ongstad. Danny also served as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for
the fall of 2015 Ventura College Men’s Water Polo Team and Weight
