Barbados Rates one of the
top 5 islands, Barbados is the eastern
-most Caribbean island. It is 21
miles in length and 14 miles wide
and has a population of approximately 284,500 people. One of the
Caribbean’s leading tourist destinations, Barbados is one of the most
developed islands in the region.
Barbados was originally named

White Teeth”. The Portuguese renamed it Barbados which means
“bearded ones”, but it is a matter of
conjecture whether this refers to the
long, hanging roots of the bearded
fig-tree indigenous to the island; to
bearded Caribs once inhabiting the
island or the foam spraying over the
outlying reefs. Barbados has been
an independent country since 1966.

The history of rum in Barbados and
Barbados itself are forever
entwined, with neither narrative complete without the other. It is believed
that rum is the oldest distilled spirit in
the world. And whether or not that is
true, it is most certainly the oldest
distilled spirit in Barbados.
The official currency is the
Bajan dollar, which is fixed to the
U.S. Dollar. Recent exchange rate
was US $1.00—Bajan $1.98. US
currency is readily accepted everywhere on the island, while most
hotels, restaurants and larger stores
accept travelers checks and most
major credit cards.
Passports
U.S. citizens are required to provide
a passport upon arrival and departure
from Barbados.
Shopping
You may find duty-free merchandise in
Barbados at prices 20% to 40% lower
than in the U.S., but you’ve got to be a
smart shopper. Duty-free shops have 2
prices listed on items: the local retail
price and the local retail price less the
government-imposed tax. Some of the
best duty-free buys include cameras,
watches, crystal, gold jewelry, bone
china, cosmetics and perfumes and liquor. The quintessential Barbados handicrafts are black-coral jewelry and clay
pottery. Island artisans weave wall
hangings from local grasses and dried
flowers and also straw mats, and baskets.
Leatherwork particularly belts, sandals
and handbags are also available..
