It has been a challenging but very productive year for us. At our 50th Anniversary Gala this past October, we heard these words of Nobel Laureate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the honoree of our first fund raising dinner in 1965, As you read through this year’s Annual Report, you will see that we grew by adding new programs, some large, some small, and that we enhanced the services provided by our existing programs. We also strengthened our organization by focusing on a variety of management initiatives: we right-sized our staffing patterns, managed our resources carefully, consolidated office space, and enhanced our development efforts. We have decided to keep our administrative center in Irvington, we are working with new constituencies and expanding our services, and we are financially healthier. The result of these efforts is that we are serving more individuals and families in a more efficient way and that Abbott House is a stronger organization. But most importantly, we are making a difference in the lives of more and more people. When you consider the extended care we give to family members of those in our charge, we estimate that Abbott House programs and services touched the lives of upwards of 7,000 individuals this past year! And we did this in our 50th year of existence! “… you at Abbott House are great and good because you are the Good Samaritans working to help those who have been abandoned, and who have faced the scars along the Jericho Roads of life. And certainly, you are to be commended. And God will bless you, for all of your significant work and for all of the meaningful things that you are doing in this community.” We feel blessed to be able to do this work and hope that you do too, because it is all of us together — Board, Administration, Staff, families and friends, donors and benefactors — who make it happen. We look forward to continuing to improve the organization and fulfilling our mission to improve the lives of those in need. James L. Kaufman, LCSW-R President & CEO Gregory T. If a child has special needs, he or she can find a foster family through the Therapeutic Foster Boarding Homes program. All foster parents are given 24-hour access to support systems so that emergencies can be diffused, questions can be answered, and families can grow successfully. • The Non-Secure Detention program provides temporary residential care for youth accused of committing delinquent or criminal acts. The primary aim of the program is to provide youth with new skills and opportunities so that their first contact with the justice system will be their last. • Bridges to Health (B2H) is a hands-on, supportive program, which launched in 2008 for children in foster care with complex medical, developmental, or mental health conditions. We offer inhome supportive services tailored to the child’s health needs and coordinated by our Health Care Integrators. Services begin while a child is in foster care and continue once a child is returned home and/or adopted. Our goal is to promote permanency for the child in the home and community by assisting families in developing and supporting the skills needed to help understand and manage the child’s health needs. Abbott House is the only social service agency that provides services to both New York City and the Lower Hudson Valley region. • The Transitional Resources for Children program serves up to 51 young people at a time. During their stay, children receive room and board, case management, individual counseling, medical and educational services, recreation/leisure activities, acculturation, legal services, and access to religious services. Children Awaiting Family Reunification Prevention Services • Abbott House works with up to 50 at-risk families in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie through the Family Assessment and Community Enhancement program to provide crucial early intervention services, helping children avoid the foster care system. 4 | ABBOTT HOUSE ANNUAL REPORT 2013 celebrating 50 years of service • www.abbotthouse.net celebrating 50 years of service • www.abbotthouse.net ABBOTT HOUSE ANNUAL REPORT 2013 | 5 Youth and Family Outcomes for 2013 Children and teenagers who had a safe and comfortable bed to sleep in 664 Adoptions for children and teenagers 28 Young people who pursued higher education, trade or vocational school 38 Children and teenagers who received Bridges to Health services 294 Number of new children welcomed into the foster care programs at Abbott House 124 Number of families who avoided foster care because of early intervention services Number of foster parents 24 285 Number of new foster homes opened 51 Number of staff who took LGBTQ training to better serve gay and lesbian children 90 Number of youth who participated in the Preparing Youth for Adulthood program 6 | ABBOTT HOUSE ANNUAL REPORT 2013 150 celebrating 50 years of service • www.abbotthouse.net celebrating 50 years of service • www.abbotthouse.net ABBOTT HOUSE ANNUAL REPORT 2013 | 7 Individuals with Developmental Disabilities Individuals with Developmental Disabilities Residential Services • Abbott House operates 15 Individualized Residential Centers and one Intermediate Care Facility for more than 100 persons with developmental disabilities. • Each home provides a safe and engaging environment for individuals to receive the support necessary to thrive and grow. • Behavior specialists consult with individuals to create goals that are important to the individual and plans that fit within that person’s capability to achieve them. Hosted by Meredith Vieira, the event honored Al Roker, Deborah Roberts, and their family with the inaugural The Dignity of Family Life Award. This award was created in remembrance of the occasion of the first Abbott House Dinner when Nobel Laureate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a speech he titled, “The Dignity of Family Life: An Address at Abbott House, Westchester County, NY, October 29, 1965.” “The evening was an historic one for Abbott House,” said Abbott House President and CEO, James L. Kaufman. “We reconnected with our roots, celebrated our half-century of service, and set the stage for the future. There was a wonderful feeling of support and camaraderie among the guests and a real sense of pride for what we have accomplished and what we will continue to do. From the recorded voice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. giving the invocation from the first Abbott House Dinner in 1965, to Al Roker’s acceptance speech, to the announcement of the Fifty Forward Campaign, to the 50th Anniversary video — it was an evening that will long be remembered.” Chairman of the Board of Directors of Abbott House, Gregory T.
