General Information
From the Board
Our stated mission is “to provide a positive environment for
enjoyment and personal growth through community
interaction.” This mission includes the many activities and
programs the Centre provides for members. But it also
includes activities that invite the surrounding Cook Street
community to come together and build neighborhood
relationships. The Board of Directors also played an active
role in the Community BBQ, including but not limited to
communications, marketing, event delivery, donations and
membership drives.
On July 12th we held our annual Community Day Barbeque,
and offered entertainment for children, opened the doors to
showcase many of the Centre’s programs and services. What
a wonderful day it was! Thanks to the efforts of our
wonderful volunteers, staff, and board members we enjoyed a
record turn-out of 300+ neighbors and signed up several new
members. In addition we were rewarded by the presence of
Mayor Dean Fortin and Councillor Charlayne
Thornton-Joe, Councillor Lisa Helps, Councillor Shellie
Gudgeon, and Councillor Chris Coleman. This kind of response makes us feel we may achieve the goals of
Cook Street Village Activity Centre’s mission.

Volunteers
Volunteer of the Month - Mary Vonfintel
On Tuesdays and Fridays during the year, but only on Fridays during the
summer, sitting at the front reception desk you will meet a bubbly blonde
named Mary Vonfintel. Mary has volunteered at the Cook Street Village
Activity Centre for approximately 4 years. Besides volunteering here, she
is and active member and treasurer of the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club,
and has played for 4 years.
Mary is definitely a west coaster, born in Vancouver and has lived in
James Bay for 30 years. She even experienced living in San Francisco
during the sixties, but that’s another story.
Besides playing Bridge, riding her bike, knitting, doing Tai Chi and
learning Snooker this Fall, Mary loves to have coffee with her friends at
the Moka House. She moved to the Cook Street Village a few years ago
and loves it. She says it has a wonderful community feeling and she’s
always running into people she knows.
She has one son and one granddaughter who live in Munich, Germany.
Thank you Mary for spending your precious time volunteering.
