NEW TOOL FOR EFFECTIVE
ORNAMENTAL INSECT CONTROL
W
ith overuse of older chemistries,
insect control becomes a greater
challenge to nursery professionals.
Growers are in search of new solutions
to add to their rotation to protect the
health of their plants and their reputation.
“We talked to growers and learned
about some of the challenges they
currently face,” says Jamie Breuninger,
technical leader for Dow AgroSciences
Turf & Ornamental. “After hearing
their feedback, we saw a definite
need for new chemistry.”
XXpire™ WG insecticide is an ornamental
product with two new active ingredients.
It combines spinetoram and Isoclast®
Active, a brand-new class of insecticide
chemistry, and is effective on 39 species,
including seven of the top 10 most
troublesome ornamental insects.
It provides broad-spectrum control of
both chewing and sap-feeding pests.
Available for use in nurseries,
greenhouses and commercial
landscapes, this advanced chemistry
offers two modes of action and
provides excellent knockdown and
residual control. Isoclast is a recently
registered active ingredient and the
sole member of the sulfoximine class of
insect control agents. Spinetoram is a
spinosyn insecticide that offers good
insecticidal activity for chewing pests.
“Together, these active ingredients
create two modes of action, reducing
the likelihood of resistance and
broadening the spectrum of control,”
Breuninger says.

CONTROLS SEVEN OF THE TOP 10 ORNAMENTAL INSECTS
• Whiteflies
• Aphids
• Mealybugs
• Lepidopterans
He also states that XXpire has been
tested on more than 300 plant species
and more than 100 ornamentals.
Third-party, university trials conducted
over the last two years demonstrate
the efficacy of XXpire when applied to
various pests on common ornamentals —
green peach aphid on roses, chilli
thrips on roses, beet armyworm on
aster, silverleaf whitefly on rose mallow
hibiscus and two-spotted spider mite
on butterfly bush to name a few.
• Lacebugs
• Certain scales
• Thrips
• Spider mites (suppression)
“XXpire is an excellent tool for resistance
management programs and a valuable
rotation partner with other chemistries,”
Breuninger says. “Because the active
ingredients each belong to a unique
IRAC group, XXpire can be rotated with
other commonly used insecticides in
different IRAC groups.”
Breuninger adds that rotating
compounds between groups, rather
than subgroups, is recommended
for maximum control.
