BRIAN GORDY
Ball State University graduate and Muncie resident Brian
Gordy has been accepted into the 147th Annual International Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society. His colorful masterpiece, “Spotted Turtle Composition,” will be on
display at the Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, New York
City, from April 1 through the 20th, 2014.
Considered by many to be the most “prestigious and competitive Watercolor Exhibition in the country,” some notable
members include Winslow Homer, Brian’s idol, along with
Louis Comfort Tiffany, Edward Hopper, William Merrit Chase,
Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam and others. Watercolor
painting is said to have very little room for error when painting professionally. One required task that is tricky to maintain
is the transparency of the paper through the thin washes of
paint.
Being the first time Gordy has been invited to show his work
in this competition, Brian was ecstatic. “It is a great honor to
be included in such a prestigious and historically important
exhibition. All of my watercolor heroes came through there,”
Gordy exclaims. Brian is also recognized as being an Indiana
Artisan, which is an organization for artisans to collaborate
and bring together one-of-a-kind art and food creations that
represent Indiana’s best.
Brian along with his wife Genny, also a Ball State Art graduate, own a local art gallery and frame shop, Gordy Fine Art
and Framing, located in downtown Muncie. Their shop represents two dozen of Muncie’s best artists, including Gordy.
A website of their works may be found at www.gordyframing.com, or call the gallery at (765) 284-8422

INDIANA GLASS TRAIL
Delaware County embraces the Indiana Glass Trail. The trail
is a showcase for talented Hoosier artisans and glass blowers
that create magic with glass. The trail connects communities
in which the tradition and history of glass and glass artisans
can be experienced first hand. There are studios, galleries
and museums as well as festivals and workshops included
in the trail.
Fans of glass artisans, glass blowers, jar collectors, history
enthusiasts and more will find something of interest in
Delaware County relating to glass.
Finding additional glass artists along the Indiana Glass Trail
can be done by visiting www.indianaglasstrail.com. Glass
artists and shops that carry their work can easily be found.
You’re on your way to discovering the best Indiana has to
offer on the Indiana Glass Trail!
MUNCIE’S GLASS HERITAGE
In 1887, the Ball family moved its glass manufacturing
business from Buffalo, New York to Muncie. Ball Brothers
Glass Company became one of America’s best known
manufacturers of canning jars.
The Ball family purchased most of the land along the north
bank of White River between Wheeling and Granville pikes
in 1893. The name chosen by the family for the property
was taken from a Sioux word, “mna” (pronounced mini)
which means “water,” and combined with the English word,
“tryst,” to form “Minnetrista,” or, “a gathering place by
the water.”
The origin of the cultural center dates back to 1978, when
Margaret Ball Petty wrote to her cousin Edmund F. Ball,
suggesting that the Ball Brothers Foundation provide a
museum in which to exhibit fine art.

BALL STATE
32
HISTORY
Ball State’s tradition of innovation and entrepreneurship
is rooted in the late 19th century, when Muncie business
leaders envisioned a local college to help boost the city’s
development. Among the visionaries were Frank C. Ball
and his brothers, young New York industrialists who moved
to Muncie looking to expand their glass container business.
A small, private teacher training school opened 1899.
After the community’s efforts to sustain the college failed,
the Ball brothers purchased the land and buildings of the
defunct institution and donated them to the State of Indiana.
This gift became the Indiana State Normal School Eastern
Division, which opened in 1918 to meet Indiana’s need for
more and better teachers.
In recognition of the Ball family’s generosity, the Indiana
General Assembly changed the school’s name to Ball
Teachers College in 1922 and then Ball State Teachers
College in 1929. The winged statue Beneficence stands
on the campus as a tribute to the family. This and other
landmarks from Ball State’s early years are featured in
our historical walking tour of the Old Quadrangle.
Growing a University
By the 1960s, the regional teachers college had begun
to attract faculty from outside the Midwest, and students
sought majors in areas such as business, architecture, and
other emerging disciplines. Enrollment and funding surged
with national trends, and new facilities and degree offerings
were added.
In 1965, the Indiana General Assembly renamed the college
Ball State University, acknowledging its phenomenal growth
in enrollment and facilities, the variety and quality of its
educational programs and services, and the anticipation
of the broader role it would play in the state’s future.
Building the Future
Today, Ball State’s entrepreneurial spirit continues to
shine through numerous expansions and additions of
degree offerings, technological resources, immersive
learning opportunities, community outreach projects,
and state-of-the-art facilities. These investments are
preparing bright students to take advantage of current
and emerging job opportunities, meet society’s most
pressing needs, and serve the communities in which they
will live and work. Learn more about our vision and mission
and our current strategic plan.

Heorot, named one of America’s 100 best craft bars
for 2014 by Draft Magazine, is one of Muncie’s most

legendary epic “Beowulf”, this Viking inspired bar is the
only award winning Indiana stop for craft brewers crossing the Midwest. Heorot’s menu boasts 450 different craft
beers, including beers from its own on-site brewery. With
this impressive selection, it is no wonder why Heorot was
named one of America’s best craft bars, the only bar in
Indiana to make the list. Heorot’s menu doesn’t just offer
better beers at better prices, it also includes a variety of
different foods from sandwiches to pizzas. Visitors can
