6 ER 201 OCTOB D3 2 whazon.com “Caught between a folk rock and a jazz place.” And every October, that's exactly where Cork finds itself, with the biggest music month of the year. The Cork Folk Festival starts it all off, a-twanging and squeeze-boxing its way around the music venues of the city. And then, the Cork Jazz Festival wraps it all up, thanks very much, with its usual selection of jazz luminaries visiting Leeside (I say 'luminaries', to be honest, I've not heard of most of them, but then I've not remembered the name of a band or musician since the early 90s!). The 'Jazz' aspect is indicative however, as there will be 'crossover' artistes in town also. It's all a rich tapestry of titles too. The Jazz people have their bands with names ending in either 'Sensation', 'Experience', Odyssey', Quartet/Quintet/or Dodecatet. The Folkies just like to list every person playing something on stage, preferably as Gaeilge. Many of our lovely advertisers are getting into the spirit of things, hosting gigs and sessions and whatever you're having yourself, vicar. We urge you to check our music listings before planning your night out, make a voyage of it and hit as many venues as is humanly possible. Support your local venues, who are there for you, literally they’re there. It's also Halloween in October, New Years Eve for all you pagans out there, and The Nightmare Realm's Hostel is the place for you fright fans to get your 'yikes' on. Every night from September 30th to November 5th gives you plenty of time to have your wits swiftly evacuated from your body. Taste Cork Week (Oct 10-16) offers a cornucopia of foodie-orientated delights. Tuck in, you won't be disappointed. Our cover star is Cork's own little Oktoberfest (or Oktoberfest Beag if we're being all Irish about it). Running from October 6th to 15th in Docklands, bring your taste-buds, your best Bavarian attitude, and prepare for a fine 'stein' time. If you're around town from October 7-9 (or any other time for that matter), and you're thinking Cork is a pretty great place to be, day and night, then you won't be surprised that Cork has renewed its Purple Flag City status. Brings a tear to the eye, it does. In broadly the same vein, Urban October, promotes in much the same way as WhazOn consistantly does what is 'grand' about the city in October. And finally, IndieCork (Oct 9-16) continues to grow as great little festival celebrating the best of independent film and music. Yes, indeed, October is a big month in Cork. Enjoy it to its absolute fullest with WhazOn at your side!
