HeartBeat January 2016 This Issue Pastoral Insights 2016 Church Calendar Year of Cultivation and Transformation January/February Birthdays Meet the Ministries January Calendar Upcoming Events Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God- this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2 East End Baptist Church 523 E Washington Street Suffolk, Virginia 23434 www.theeastendbaptistchurch.com Barbara Y. Miller HeartBeat Editor Dr. Wayne D. Faison Senior Pastor First of all, I want to be the first one to say THANK YOU for your continued worship and service at The East End Baptist Church in 2016. A special THANK YOU to our church leaders for your willingness to serve as leaders. Our congregation, as well as our broader Christian community, certainly appreciates the time, energy, and efforts you have committed to invest in the upcoming year. Therefore, let each of us forge ahead into next year by emulating the words of Joshua 1:6 – “BEING STRONG AND OF GOOD COURAGE.” The East End Baptist Church has a long history of great leaders who have served throughout our 127+ years of existence. Consequently, we should be encouraged that we are standing on the broad shoulders of Christian pioneers, trailblazers, and visionaries of the past. At the same time, we are currently laying a much more expansive foundation for our next generation of Christian stalwarts, entrepreneurs, and innovators. I don’t know about you, but I am thrilled that God has decided to use us, during this season, as we stand at the “Crossroads of Now,” actively linking “what has been” to “what shall be.” Based on Romans 12: 1-2, the upcoming year has been deemed the “Year of Cultivation & Transformation.” Therefore, I’m being led by the Holy Spirit to lead our church through “a process of tilling in order to heighten” the effectiveness of our various ministries. The East End Baptist Church currently offers 65 ministries, not including some of our “sub-ministries.” In 2016, these 65 ministries will be stratified into 9 Ministry Teams, which are each led by a Team Leader. Also in 2016, we are providing an additional layer of support by integrating Cluster Leaders into our overall ministry structure, as depicted in the following graphic: The Ministries Ministry Leaders Team Leaders Cluster Leaders Ministry Field Pastoral Leader It is my prayer that however we serve, God will use all of us, collectively, to reach the world for Christ. So, join me, as we begin building, refining, elevating, and activating our ministries during this Year of Cultivation & Transformation. And, I have the utmost confidence that God will continue to bring to fruition in this 21st century, the wonderful work He’s been orchestrating here at The East End Baptist Church since the 19th century. HELP SHAPE THE FUTURES OF OUR YOUNG MEN Dear Members, we are planning to restart the Boy Scouts program here at East End Baptist Church and are in need of volunteers. We are soliciting your help in restoring the rich history of Scouting that has existed here at East End. If you have a passion for mentoring and would like to be instrumental in shaping the future of our young men, please contact Darryll Lewis at 571-236-0968 or at pedarryll@gmail.com. THANK YOU The Angel Tree is one of the many community outreach projects Sisters Who Care (40-59) is involved in. We were able to bless 53 children with Christmas gifts! To God be the glory! Thank you to all who helped us bless these children. You are appreciated! MEET THE MINISTRIES Bible in a Year – WITHDRAWAL!!! East End Baptist Church is blessed to have 65 different ministries serving our members and offering our members an opportunity to serve. In this and upcoming issues of HeartBeat we will be introducing you to our ministries, their purpose and their assigned cluster. Each cluster has a purpose… • “UP” Ministries – The Discernment Cluster – Moving UPWARD to engage the presence of God. • “IN” Ministries – The Discipleship Cluster – Moving INWWARD to learn more about God. • “OUT” Ministries – The Discovering Cluster – Moving OUTWARD to participate with God. I did it! I actually did it! I can now proudly proclaim that in 2015, I read the entire Bible from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21, all 66 books, 1189 chapters and 31,102 verses, every word. I was ecstatic when I, along with others who had done the same thing, received my commemorative bookmark at the Watch Night Service on New Year’s Eve. What a wonderful sense of accomplishment I felt. And then came January 1, 2016 as I prepared myself for my morning ritual of getting my huge cup of coffee, getting to my quiet place and settling in for my morning “dose” of Bible reading. All of a sudden it hit me…what shall I read? In what order should I read it? Old Testament or new? I read through a few of my favorite scriptures and realized that this was no longer enough. It was at this time that I realized two things: 1. I need structure, discipline and a deadline. I need a plan. Fortunately after a little research I was able to find a plan that works for me. 2. I’m fairly confident that I am not the only one who met with this “dilemma”. You might be surprised how much information is out there. There are tons of plans to suit specific needs. You can study from beginning to end, historically, chronologically, different plan lengths i.e. monthly, 90 day, etc. There are also different versions i.e. King James, NIV, etc. First up… • Audio-Visual Ministry Marvin Satchell, Chair o Purpose – To share our genuine love for God and community through the provision of all church audio-visual functions (i.e., taping services; taking pictures; operating delicate equipment, etc.). To enhance the worship experience and strengthen our relationship with God. (UP) • AWANA Violene Sharpe, Team Leader o Purpose – To train children to know, love and serve Christ boldly and engaging them in long-term discipleship. (IN) • Benevolence Ministry Yvonne B. Green, Chair o To aid in the fight against hunger by feeding as many in need as possible. (OUT) Here are links to some websites that have plans. I am not promoting any one over another nor am I suggesting that these are the only ones. You might find them helpful. www.biblestudytools.com www.bible.com www.backtothebible.org www.biblegateway.com www.youversion.com/apps-bibleapps To Our Continued Growth in ChristBarbara Y.
