That’s why, at Bauder, we are committed to producing solutions that meet all the challenges a project may bring. Bauder Thermofol products are only available to be installed by a controlled list of registered contractors. Thermofol registered contractors are required to provide a range of company information to Bauder to ensure their suitability and standing to gain status as a registered installer. The contractor must also undertake either product installation training or a product competence assessment to ensure that the installation of the products is to the standard required by Bauder. n n n n n n Cost effective Lightweight Fast track flame free installation High tensile strength Resistant to chemical and micro-organisms Tested and approved for green roofs All operatives who have been trained or assessed and have been approved to install the Thermofol products are issued with a photographic approved badge. Bauder holds a central database list of both registered contractors and approved trained installers. With nearly 60 years of technical and production experience of PVC products, and with over 20 million m² of Thermofol PVC already installed, Bauder really is the name to trust. ASSOCIATIONS Bauder is a member of the Single Ply Roofing Association Thermofol As an association, SPRA ensures that specifiers obtain high quality polymerbased single layer roofing, through a partnership of quality assured manufacturers and contractors. Thermofol provides a strong and versatile solution that’s ideal for any mechanically fastened or adhered roofing projects. Thermofol resists UV damage and the light coloured surface is highly solar reflective. GUARANTEED SATISFACTION The products have high tensile strength with a pre-coated polyester cross weave reinforcement making them resistant to punctures. Bauder has, over the last 28 years, established a reputation for providing guarantees which are straight forward and reflect our confidence in our products. The Thermofol products come with a guarantee for 10, 15 or 20 years which is linked to the product thickness used. The product guarantee will normally be issued at the completion of the project and upon a satisfactory inspection of the installation being undertaken by Bauder. A wide range of fasteners are available that make the mechanical attachment of Thermofol to metal, concrete or timber and many other types of decking materials both efficient and effective. For applications where mechanical fastening is not suitable, two adhered options are available; bonding either directly to the deck, in a cold or inverted roof construction or to the insulation in a warm roof construction. MANUFACTURE The production history of the original manufacturing plant based in Germany stretches back over nearly 60 years, and now, due to unrivalled success in the supply of single ply membranes, Bauder has recently invested in the commissioning of a new state of the art second manufacturing facility. This reflects Bauder’s commitment to long term investment in single ply products and the continued willingness to investigate innovative and environmentally conscious production methods. Bauder’s additional single ply manufacturing facility opened in 2009. bauder.ie 1801-4ppCover.indd 2 2 bauder.co.uk 25/01/2010 09:00 Bauder’s Thermofol single ply system is widely used and specified on projects which require high performance, technical support and aesthetically pleasing design solutions. The Strada Edinburgh Regency Homes, Glasgow The Strada Edinburgh Walnuts School, Milton Keynes bauder.ie 1801-8ppText.indd 1 3 bauder.co.uk 25/01/2010 08:59 INSTALLATION OPTIONS MECHANICALLY FIXED This option is generally used on most decking types, metal and timber being the most common. A concrete deck with a high proportion of stone can be difficult to mechanically fasten to, though it is possible if no other option is suitable. If this type of system is selected, then consideration should be given to the aesthetic appearance of the protruding fasteners on the underside of the structural decking. The inclusion of an internal ceiling readily solves this issue. Mechanical fastening provides a fast, safe and effective method of membrane attachment, but it is always recommended to undertake a wind uplift calculation to BS 6399 part 2 to ensure the correct amount of fasteners are specified. Our technical department can provide these calculations within a project specification. Mechanical fastening is not affected by the ambient weather conditions or temperature and is therefore suitable for installation all year round. ADHERED SYSTEM An adhered system can be used effectively when the structural decking is either difficult to mechanically fasten into, or the use of fasteners will compromise the air leakage or internal aesthetics of the project. It can be used with either a fleece-backed membrane or the standard non fleece-backed membrane. Adhered systems still require an amount of mechanical restraint installed around the perimeter of the roof area, which is designed to assist in the resistance of wind uplift. The finished appearance of an adhered system is generally less wrinkled than that of a mechanically fastened system as the membrane is fully restrained over the entire roof surface, however, the appearance will of course be affected by the substrate it is being installed on to. BALLASTED OR INVERTED SYSTEM This option for membrane attachment restrains the components of both warm roof and inverted roof systems. A suitable aggregate or paving should be specified that will be sufficient to resist wind uplift and flotation. In this situation, the single ply membrane needs to be protected from abrasion by the use of a separating layer. This type of application is approved on the understanding that the ballast / timber decking / green roof system will be immediately installed to finished areas of waterproofing. If this can not be achieved, then temporary loading of the waterproofing must be undertaken to resist wind uplift. The system can only be guaranteed whilst the surface loading required to resist wind uplift remains in place. bauder.ie 1801-8ppText.indd 2 4 bauder.co.uk 25/01/2010 08:59 Advantages of MECH FIX Disadvantages of MECH FIX Calculated to BS6399 Concrete needs pre-drilling Not affected by adverse weather Fasteners visible on underside or temperature of deck Fast track installation The membrane is positioned to give a minimum of 100 mm side lap and 150 mm head lap, a fastening is secured at one end of the sheet, and the membrane pulled as tight as possible to remove any wrinkles or creases, after which the remaining fasteners are installed. The membrane is then restrained at the perimeters and abutments with a Thermofol pre-formed metal-type detail or a linear bar and fastener with a cover strip of membrane to provide waterproofing. Advantages of Adhered Disadvantages of Adhered Non penetration of vapour barrier Weather dependant No internal aesthetic issues Reduced possibilities of recycling Membrane is fully restrained over roof surface The sheet to be installed is carefully aligned to ensure a minimum of 100 mm side lap; the end laps of adhered membranes are close butted and a cover strap of membrane welded over the joint to provide a waterproof cover. The membrane is bonded with any areas to be either solvent or hot air welded kept free of the adhesive. PICTURE HERE The membrane is also restrained at the perimeters and abutments with the inclusion of a standard Thermofol pre-formed metal-type detail or a peel-stop bar and fastener. Advantages of BALLASTED Disadvantages Protection of membrane Fast track installation High resistance to wind up-lift Weight loading to structure Limited to a low pitch Temporary ballasting required during installation The membrane is aligned to ensure a minimum of 100 mm side lap and 150 mm head lap and loose laid over the selected substrate or insulation. It is then restrained at the all perimeters and abutments through with the inclusion of a standard Thermofol pre-formed metal-type detail or a linear bar and fastener, with a cover strip of membrane to provide waterproofing. bauder.ie 1801-8ppText.indd 3 PICTURE HERE 5 bauder.co.uk 25/01/2010 08:59 WELDING TECHNIQUES HOT AIR WELDING Hot air welding is used to securely join the laps of single ply membrane. There are two principle types of welding equipment, hand welding guns and automated trolley welding machines; both require an electrical supply to the roof which is fed through a residual circuit breaker and is normally obtained direct from the mains supply or by generator where appropriate. At the correct temperature, and with the application of pressure via the roller, the membranes fuse together and when cool provide a homogeneous watertight joint. Hand welding equipment This is mainly used for installing details to the roof and allows for flexibility of positioning of the welding equipment. It is not really suitable for installing larger roof areas as it is slower and less controlled than using an automatic trolley machine. Most modern hand held welding tools incorporate PID technology which ensures that the temperature at the point of welding is controlled and remains constant. Hand welding single ply details is a two stage process. Welds are formed by firstly undertaking an inner pre-weld to initially join the sheets and create an envelope which will then trap the hot air, preventing it from escaping between the membranes during the final welding process. Hand Welding Equipment Automatic welding equipment An automated machine is larger and are more suitable for the installation of larger areas as it delivers a constant speed and temperature at the point of welding. The machine incorporates a heavy roller which applies pressure to the fused membranes so that as they cool a secure weld is created. The machine is able to operate at an average speed of 2.5m of welding per minute and is a single stage process. The site will require a 240v, 32amp power supply, generally delivered by bespoke generator at roof level. Automatic Welding Equipment SOLVENT WELDING The use of the specially formulated Bauder seam solvent to create joins in the membrane is an effective alternative to hot air welding and can be used to join membrane to membrane and membrane to compatible accessories. Solvent welding is a single stage process. The membrane is overlapped by at least 50 mm to allow for a 30 mm weld and must be clean, dry and free from dirt to accept the seam solvent which is applied by brush between the overlap. The solvent is applied along the length of the lap to be joined. The surfaces to be joined are well covered with solvent (10 grams per lm) but not over saturated as the solvent could cause damage to the insulation beneath. The membrane is then pressure rolled and if required a temporary weight used over the joint to ensure continuous pressure is applied until the join has started to bond. Solvent Welding KEY FEATURES Hot Air Welding Wide operating window Does not require solvent Defective welds easily corrected The joint will become waterproof after 10 mins in normal operating temperatures and ambient conditions. Solvent welding should not be undertaken in wet or damp conditions nor temperatures below 5ºC or above 35ºC. After 30 minutes of completion of the welding process the joints are inspected using a metal probe to check that the lap has fully sealed. Any areas requiring additional bonding are opened and resealed using hot air welding. The pre-coating of the metal sheet with a liquid compound of the corresponding material means that an effective compatible joint can be created when joining the two components. Pre-coated metal is the material used within Bauder’s standard range of details and is incorporated wherever a change of angle or direction occurs within a detail. This method of detailing creates an aesthetically pleasing finish as the metal can be fabricated to suit most regular angles. The metal is also used to provide a mechanical restraint around the perimeter of the roof area and at any change of level or abutment details. Bauder pre-coated metal is most commonly used when the detail is of a uniform nature and the detailing membrane is installed independently to the structure. Bauder Pre-Coated Metal, Edgetrims and Flashing Detail. When sheets of pre-coated metal are joined a 3 mm expansion joint is left between the two sheets and a cover strap of membrane welded over the joint. Fixing Bar As an alternative, a Bauder fixing bar can be used in the creation of changes in direction. The bar is mechanically fastened in to the angle of the detail and a cover strap installed to waterproof over the fasteners. This is primarily used when the detail is irregular in height and width, such as on tapering insulation, and the membrane is being fully bonded to the abutment or structure. Details which incorporate the Bauder fixing bar will require PVC stop cord to be welded to the surface of the membrane behind the bar to assist in resisting the membrane from being pulled from under the fixing bar. Bar and Cord Fixing bars can be fastened to the vertical or horizontal structure and work in conjunction with the PVC stop cord. bauder.ie 1801-8ppText.indd 5 7 bauder.co.uk 25/01/2010 08:59 SYSTEM ACCESSORIES PROFILES The incorporation of pre-extruded PVC profiles is an effective way of reproducing the familiar appearance of a metal-type roof and adds an aesthetic finish to a Thermofol roofing membrane. The attachment of these profiles is a simple non-invasive operation which can be undertaken with either hot air or seam solvent welding. Profile strips are available for the standard colours of the Thermofol system and are 2m long. The spacing of the profiles is dependant on the client’s requirement for the aesthetic appearance of the finished roof but are generally spaced at 750 mm wide centre. This spacing enables one strip to be installed over the welded seam of the membrane to mask the joint and the next strip to act as a batten to reduce the movement of the membrane along the centre of the sheet. RSPB Nature Reserve Visitor Centre Lakenheath Fen INSTALLATION ACCESSORIES To ensure that our commitment to quality and problem free installation remains firm, Bauder has developed a wide range of PVC coated or compatible accessories for use with the Thermofol membranes. These accessories range from the pre-coated metal used in the formation of standard details through to a complete range of outlets suitable for inclusion into the system. The pre-coating of many of these accessory components with a compatible PVC compound ensure that continued integrity can be maintained when joining the membrane to any accessory item. Along with the pre-coated components are a range of specialist adhesives, solvents and cleaners to ensure that a complete waterproofing package is available. WALKWAYS AND PROTECTION Thermofol walkway membrane can be installed over the waterproofing membrane. This un-reinforced membrane has an embossed anti-slip finish and a contrasting color to provide a clearly visible, safe area for non-regular foot traffic. Roof areas which will be subjected to more regular or harsh traffic can easily be accommodated with the Thermofol system but specific requirements should be discussed with Bauder prior to installation. The Thermofol walkway is installed by loose laying the protective sheet over the waterproofing membrane and sealing around the perimeter using either the hot air welding or solvent jointing techniques. TYPE The selection of vapour barrier can have a number of different motivators as well as a number of consequences to the overall design of the scheme. Primarily split into either bituminous or polyethylene they prevent moisture vapour under pressure passing through the waterproofing system from inside the building which would reduce performance and longevity. VB20 VB4 DS1 DUO POLYETHYLENE SBS BITUMEN SBS BITUMEN Torch-Applied Self-Adhered Attachment Loose-Laid Suitability Mechanical Fix Feature Cost Effective Mechanical Fix/ Adhered Instant Waterproofing Adhered Bonding Strips for Insulation Others are available POLYETHYLENE VCL Polyethylene vapour control layers are primarily used for mechanically fastened projects when the attachment of the system does not require adhesion to the decking structure. Polyethylene sheets are loose laid over the supporting decking and joined and sealed using specialist adhesive tapes. This type of vapour control layer provides a highly cost effective solution to vapour control. ELASTOMERIC BITUMEN MEMBRANES These membranes are most commonly used in adhered options to provide a secure attachment from which to build the rest of the system. This type of vapour barrier provides a more effective defence to the passage of vapour than a polyethylene sheet and has the advantage of giving instant waterproofing to the deck. If the eventual waterproofing is to be mechanically fastened then this type of vapour barrier can be used to provide early stage waterproofing There are two types of bitumen membrane used as vapour barriers, the first is generally torch applied and is suitable to receive thermal insulation bonded with specialist adhesive. The second type is a self-adhesive product, as in our DS1 DUO, which incorporates torch-activated bonding bitumen strips to its upper surface on to which the insulation is secured. THERMAL INSULATION Thermofol is suitable for use with Bauder Thermotech PIR or Bauder PIR cut to falls insulation as well as being compatible with other types of thermal insulation. Thermotech PIR has a glass tissue facing making it suitable for both mechanically fastened and adhered applications and is supplied in a wide range of thicknesses and board sizes. Bauder PIR cut to falls is an unfaced insulation and is suitable for mechanically fastened and fleece-back bonded applications. Insulation suitability and compatibility should always be checked with Bauder prior to incorporation into the system. Tapered Insulation PRODUCT INFORMATION COLOUR *(EN 12311-1) bauder.ie 1801-8ppText.indd 7 9 bauder.co.uk 25/01/2010 08:59 Environmental CREDENTIALS & green roofs ENVIRONMENTAL CREDENTIALS Bauder actively reprocesses back into production any available non-contaminated production waste and recycles back energy and fuel into the running of the factory. This re-incorporation of waste is carefully managed to ensure that the quality and long term durability of the manufactured membrane still meets the exacting standards of quality. If the percentage of recycled products were to be increased to a high level the long- term durability of the membrane could be reduced and lead to earlier replacement and result in an overall increased environmental impact. Bauder membranes which have been laminated with fleece-backing and contaminated with adhesive can be recycled into industrial grade PVC products. Alternatively, membranes which have been returned after successful completion of their design function can be recycled into high grade roofing accessories. Both of these processes are undertaken at a facility located approximately 60 miles from our single ply manufacturing plants. All waste material from the Bauder Single Ply Training School is recycled locally and Bauder would be happy to discuss the logistics of recycling larger quantities of waste material if the requirement arose. RSPB Nature Reserve Lakenheath GREEN ROOFS usual lap fasteners) for each of the membrane sheets. Once installed, these secondary fasteners must have a cover strap of membrane installed over them to ensure waterproofing integrity. Additional fasteners are not required on fully adhered Thermofol systems. Creating an extensive green roof as a landscape finish to a flat roof provides many environmental benefits including helping to mask a building into its surroundings, particularly if it is positioned in areas sensitive to new construction. Extensive green roofs use low maintenance and frost and wind hardy vegetation, such as sedum plants. The roofs remain both lightweight and cost effective if our pre-cultivated XeroFlor XF301 sedum blankets are used to provide this vegetation. These areas are not suitable for recreational use and should only be accessed for routine maintenance. When Bauder SS40 drainage and retention trim is specified to retain the XeroFlor blanket at perimeter edges and at abutments, the same installation method used for attaching the retention strips is used. Thermofol single ply membrane provides lightweight, cost effective waterproofing solution in these instances. Bauder’s Thermofol membrane has been tested and approved under the guidelines of the German FLL (Forschungsgesellschaft Landschaftsentwicklung Landschaftsbau) to ensure suitability as a root resistant waterproofing for extensive green roof landscaping. When Thermofol membrane is used on sloped roofs over 5º with our sedum blankets, it is necessary to provide additional restraint. Bauder retention strips featuring a row of barbed spikes are installed to the top surface of the Thermofol membrane and held in position with a cover strap of waterproof membrane. On mechanically fastened Thermofol green roof installations, an additional, centrally positioned, line of fasteners is required (placed between the Walnuts School Milton Keynes APPROVALS The Green Guide to Specification uses life cycle assessment to provide environmental ratings for common specifications of individual major construction elements such as a roof, wall, floor, etc. PVC single ply waterproofing has an A+ rating within this guide which is the best available rating under this method of assessment. bauder.ie 1801-8ppText.indd 8 10 bauder.co.uk 25/01/2010 08:59 OVERVIEW QUALITY ASSURANCE whatever the project, quality counts REGISTERED CONTRACTORS Having complete confidence in the products you use for construction projects can make all the difference to achieving success.
