BENEFITS
National
F
advocacy in action - the year in review
or the past nineteen years we have collaborated in many meaningful bicycle advocacy initiatives across North
America. This year was no exception as we continued to partner with advocates on key national initiatives as well as
many locally-targeted programs that focus on getting more people on bikes.
On the national level, we continued our support of the fourth annual Youth Bike Summit. The three day gathering attracted
spirited participation from nearly 500 youth and adults from 25 states and three countries who are at the center of a growing
movement to develop and inspire the next generation of bicycle advocates. Collectively, the group explores how kids can
create positive social change and how bicycling can be a part of a sustainable future.
Again this year we teamed up with the Adventure Cycling Association to lend a hand with their “Build It. Bike It. Be a Part
of It.” Campaign that raised over $147,000 for the U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS). The funds will be used to establish a
network of interstate routes that connect America’s cities, suburbs and rural areas. When completed, the USBRS will be the
largest official cycling route network on the planet!
On the local level, we are energized by the fact that communities across the country are embracing bicycles and building
infrastructure to make our cities and towns more livable. In an effort to broaden this progress, we supported fifteen Earna-Bike programs across the country helping to empower kids to fix, earn, use and enjoy bicycles. We have continued our
support of WE Bike NYC. Their programs have motivated women across the five boroughs to begin biking by educating them
on bike safety and maintenance. Additionally, we provided lights to fifteen “Be Bright” initiatives which raise awareness about
safe cycling and provide free lights to those in need.
For nearly two decades, we are proud of the part we have played to help make our communities more bicycle-friendly.
More importantly, we are continually fueled by the energy, commitment and intelligence of the countless individuals and
organizations who work tirelessly to improve conditions for bicyclists and, as a direct result, improve the health of individuals,
communities and the planet.

E
ach year we select four individuals
who are passionate and dedicated to
using their bicycles as transportation
and honor them as Planet Bike
SUPERCOMMUTER. Among the chosen few
have been a professor, a bike shop mechanic,
a lawyer, a farmer, a doctor and even the
drummer from Blue Oyster Cult.
In the last twelve months we’ve gotten to know
some fantastic bicycle ambassadors. They ride
through every season, in all types of weather,
day and night. They choose the simplicity, health
and pleasure of bicycling. Some go beyond the
ride and work to improve the bicycle climate
in their community. This is certainly true of
SUPERCOMMUTER Mark Martin.
When we first caught wind of Baton Rouge’s
Mark Martin it was clear that he was doing
something special. In addition to being a 15 year
bicycle commuter veteran Mark has become
a leading force for bicycle rights in Louisiana.
Soon after transplanting himself in Baton
Rouge in 2000 he found the city’s bike facilities
to be all but nonexistent. “Realizing that nothing
would come of complaining unless someone
did something about it, it dawned on me that
that someone would have to be me,” said Mark.
And so began his rise as an outspoken advocate
for biking in Baton Rouge and beyond.
In 2006, Mark chaired the first board of
the Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe
Streets (BRASS) which was the city’s first
bicycling and walking advocacy organization.
He was instrumental in convincing city officials
to adopt Complete Streets policies. In 2009
he worked to have the 3-feet passing and
anti-harassment laws passed in Louisiana and
continues to work on transportation-related
legislative issues. Mark has, without a doubt,
helped increase the number of people riding
their bicycles in the region by promoting the 5
Es (education, engineering, encouragement,
enforcement, and evaluation) of creating
bicycle friendly places.
Aside from wanting to help others get out and
ride, Mark simply likes the way he feels when
he rides. The bicycle fills him with a spirit of
freedom and joy and as he puts it, “I like being in
the world, wind in my face, with no obstruction
between me and what’s around me.” Mark
adores the beauty of his adopted city and he
takes every chance to share it with others by
bicycle, of course.
Mark’s enthusiasm for biking is contagious
and his dedication to improving cycling in his
community is inspiring. In parting, this muttonchopped sage wants us all to remember to
cycle with an open mind and “don’t let concern
for all the benefits of riding get in the way of
the joy. The benefits will be there so revel in
the joy!” Hopefully we can all put Mark’s nugget
of wisdom into practice as we pedal down the
roads this year.
