IACS Seniors Chairperson Message
Esther Beaudette
I hope everyone is surviving the hot humid wet summer we’re having.

Festa Italiana 2013
Plaque Awarded To Sticky Cannoli-Eating Champion
You didn’t need to be the size
of a sumo wrestler or be an
enormously huge person to
have an exceptionally large
appetite for cannoli. Eleven contestants shamelessly
stuffed their “creamy- filling”
faces with large size
cannoli.
Within
a six-minute period, the competitive eaters scarfed
down 125 cannoli,
resulting in a twoway tie – each one
having shoved 12 cannoli
down their throats. The oneminute sudden death, eat-off
tie breaker commenced. The
winner was determined. Salvatore Aiello won the Festa
Italiana 2013 World
Cannoli-Eating
Championship and
received a plaque.
Runner up was Tim
“The Shark” Cope. All
contestants received a
“Keep Calm Cannoli
On” souvenir t-shirt.
Special
thanks
to Fern Hill Golf
Club for sponsoring this event;
sincere appreciation to Ron
DiBartolomeo, who oversaw
the scarfing down, and Il Fornaio Bakery for donating all
of the cannoli.
“Judges Judging Meatballs Contest”
The Quest For The Ultimate Meatball
On Saturday, July 20th,
once again Macomb
County Judges put their
taste buds to the test
to determine which
contestant cooked and
brought to the Italian
festival the “ultimate”
meatballs.
Judging
was based on the overall taste of the juicy
ground meats; fresh
ingredients; exquisite
seasonings or sauce.
Michael Giacchina decided to put
his meatballs in
the “court” to
challenge and attempt to unseat
his wife, Kristina, who is a
two-time Italian
festival meatball
winner (2007 &
2008). It was a difficult
sampling/eating task for
the judges, but someone
had to do it. As it turned
out, Michael was not able
to claim victory over his
wife because it was a tie.
Special thank you to Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Homes for sponsoring the event; thank you
to Angie D’Aleo Morelli,
Chairperson, and sincere
and grateful appreciation
to our returning judges for
their support each year …
Hon. Judge Peter Maceroni, Hon. Judge Michael
Maceroni, Hon. Judge Sebastian Lucido, and Vince
Viviano, Community Relations Coordinator, Macomb County Road Department.

Thank You Randazzo Fresh Market
By Sandra Tornberg
If you’re a faithful reader
of The Italian American,
you know that each month
our second page features
shoppers at Randazzo
Fresh Market. Mr. Sonny
Randazzo told me that
they like to feature their
customers in the ads
because “they are most
important”. Randazzo
Fresh Market has been
advertising
in
The
Italian American for
the past three years. In
addition, they have been
supporters of the Festa
Italiana for ten years
and have been a major
sponsor of our Ladies

years.
Furthermore,
Randazzo Fresh Market
is always ready to donate
flowers, plants, fruit, and
whatever else the IACS
happens to need to make
an event special.
Randazzo Fresh Market
has been serving the
community for over forty
years. Mr. Nino Randazzo
opened the first store,
located at 13441 13 Mile

and the second, at 49880
Hayes in Macomb, in

locations,
but
dad Nino still comes
in almost every day.
He has a huge garden

the

he said are 95% complete.
His words were illustrated
by a slideshow that showed
the work as it progressed.
John thanked everyone who
helped with the project,
in particular Domenico

very hard.
John also
thanked Mike Biondo of

generous donation of vases
for the lobby.
John thanked Messina

IACS. Next he recognized
Mario Moceri, who donated
equipment, volunteers and
his own labor to spread
the limestone onto the
courts. John then thanked
Tony Recchia, Domenic
Nardone, Floyd Zanchetta,
Ralph Baldassarro, and
Carlo

who
finished the job. Special
recognition was given to

Rosemarie has two children,

back home to the Detroit
area in January 2012.
From the time Rosemarie
was young, tea has been a
part of her life. Her mother
would have ladies over for
tea and cards, and Rosemarie
would help her set the table.
She collected tea cups and
saucers, which gave her
an opportunity to give her
tea-themed gifts for special
occasions.
Rosemarie’s
knowledge
and real love for tea began
about 20 years ago with a
friend who taught her to
treat herself by relaxing with
a cup of tea because “she
was worth it”. No one else
was going to do it for her so
she was to do it for herself.
“Treat herself” what a new
concept. “I am worth it and
so are you. You are special,
and you deserve to take the
time to treat yourself with a
relaxing cup of tea”.
The tea ritual can be
elaborate or simple. That is
what Rosemarie talks about
in her tea lectures along with
the history of tea; how to
brew a perfect pot of tea and
the ins and outs of English
and American tea rituals.
Rosemarie now has an
extensive collection of tea
cups and saucers, teapots,
accoutrements, etc.
She
loves giving teas and having
ladies relax and enjoy the
special treatment she brings
to the tea experience.

Montelepre Annual Mass & Procession
On Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Holy Family Church was the
Annual Mass and Procession held by the Societa’ SS. Crocifisso Club Montelepre, as the annual celebration was held
at the same time in Montelepre, Pro. Palermo, Sicilia. The
group is led by President Vito Iacona. Chairman of the
event was Pino Genovese. This year the Societa’ made a
traditional Sicilian “VARA” to carry the Crucifix during
the procession along with numerous other Sicilian clubs
joining in with their banner in the procession. The mass
was well received with over 250 people in attendance. The
committee served sandwiches, desserts, and refreshments
for all who attended, along with raffling off a beautiful large

NEW YORK. Barack
Obama ha scelto chi a Roma
dovrà sostituire David
Thorne, che dopo quattro
anni termina il suo incarico
di ambasciatore in Italia. Il
suo posto sarà preso da John

Dottore Umberto Mucci di

Gli italiani che vivono negli
Stati Uniti hanno votato, come
noi che viviamo in Italia,
per le elezioni dello scorso
febbraio. Tanti candidati, tutti
mossi dal grande amore per
l’Italia, divisi in formazioni
politiche a volte identiche a
quelle che si fronteggiavano
in Italia, a volte diverse: in
una circoscrizione elettorale
gigantesca che comprende
Stati Uniti, Canada e Messico.
Se al Senato l’ha spuntata Ron
Turano, di Chicago, alla Camera
sono state elette due donne: la
Parlamentare che ha preso i
suoi voti per la gran parte negli
USA si chiama Angela Fucsia
Nissoli, coniugata Fitzgerald.
La ringraziamo molto per aver
potuto, tra un voto d’aula e un
aereo sull’oceano, raccontarsi
un po’ a noi e ai nostri lettori.
On. Nissoli, lei è nata in Italia
ed è poi emigrata negli Stati
Uniti: ha vissuto esattamente
metà della sua vita in Italia, e
metà negli USA. Ci racconta
un po’ la sua storia, in
particolare dopo che è arrivata
in America?
Si, sono nata in Italia, nella
provincia di Bergamo da papà
lombardo e mamma siciliana.
Negli USA ci sono arrivata nel
Italian American Cultural Society
AGOSTO 2013
Un’Italoamericana nel Parlamento Italiano
1989 quando ho
incontrato mio
marito americano
ed originario di
Chicago. Vivo
quindi negli USA
da quasi 25 anni,
sono sposata e
ho 3 splendidi
figli: Melania 22,
Pauline 17 e Thomas 13. Pur
vivendo negli Stati Uniti da
parecchi anni ho fatto ben 12
traslochi, per cui posso dire
che conosco abbastanza bene
le diversità che presentano
e posso dire che amo questo
Paese nel quale mi sento
integrata sotto ogni punto
di vista: tuttavia conservo
profondamente radicata nel
mio cuore la mia italianità,
l’amore per la nostra bella
Patria. Da anni opero nel
volontariato, nel sociale e mi
piace aiutare le persone in
difficoltà. Queste attività mi
hanno permesso di essere in
stretto contatto con numerose
realtà e ho avuto la possibilità
di conoscere tanta gente
personalmente, le loro storie,
stringendo un forte legame con
la comunità italiana. Inoltre,
ho sempre contribuito nel mio
piccolo a diffondere la cultura
e la lingua italiana, infatti fin
da piccoli ho instillato nel
cuore dei miei figli l’amore e
l’orgoglio per il tricolore e li
ho aperti a tutte le tradizioni
italiane comprese le festività
tradizionali.
Lei è una dei tre componenti
del Parlamento Italiano
eletti nella circoscrizione
elettorale che comprende
gli Stati Uniti: tra l’altro,
per la prima volta dagli
USA quest’anno c’è una
componente femminile (Lei
come anche l’Onorevole La
Marca, che però ha la sua
constituency soprattutto in
Canada). Quanti sono gli
italiani aventi diritto a votare
nella sua circoscrizione, e
quanti hanno votato lei?
Nella mia Ripartizione, dai
consolati, sono stati inviati
328.788 plichi elettorali dal cui
contenuto sono state restituite
il 29,87% delle buste elettorali.
Io ho ricevuto 6.340 voti.
Com’è
la
vita
da
Parlamentare?Sel’aspettava
così, o c’è qualcosa che l’ha
sorpresa, sia in positivo che
in negativo?
Questa
esperienza
è
straordinaria e coinvolge le
emozioni e l’intelligenza in
una sfida per il bene comune,
oltre gli interessi di parte,
guardando al futuro di una
grande Italia che va oltre i
confini nazionali.
Ho avuto e sto avendo la
possibilità di entrare nei cuori
delle persone, di capire i loro
bisogni, le loro necessità: mi
sono resa conto che il modo di
fare di alcuni politici non è lo
specchio del senso civico degli
italiani e della loro cultura. Sto
incontrandoinParlamentotante
persone nuove, ho scoperto
una realtà viva di persone
coraggiose, desiderose di agire,
appassionate e disponibili a
lavorare per il bene dell’Italia
facendola diventare un Paese
all’avanguardia capace di
cogliere le sfide del presente
e del futuro: sento davvero
un cambiamento positivo.
Sono molto ottimista e sono
certa che il futuro delle nuove
generazioni andrà sempre
migliorando.
Alcuni sostengono che
la Circoscrizione estera
andrebbe eliminata, e che si
dovrebbero trovare forme
di coinvolgimento degli
italiani all’estero diverse
da quelle che prevedono la
partecipazione alle elezioni.
Lei cosa ne pensa?
La
Circoscrizione
estero
non andrebbe eliminata ma
riformata, a tal proposito la
scorsa settimana ho promosso un
seminario proprio sulla riforma
del voto all’estero. Il voto per
corrispondenza ha dimostrato
tutte le sue fragilità e dovrà
presto cedere il passo all’utilizzo
di supporti informatici. E questo
è il momento più propizio per
sperimentare tra le comunità
all’estero il voto telematico:
quello, non vi sono dubbi, sarà
il futuro del voto tanto per la
Circoscrizione estero quanto
per l’Italia. Quando ciò accadrà,
dipende dalla rapidità con cui
politica e società recepiranno
gli input che, pure, sono emersi
durante il seminario di studi
su “La circoscrizione estero e
la riforma del voto all’estero”.
Il seminario ha inteso offrire
una occasione per riflettere
sul futuro della circoscrizione
estero in un momento delicato
del nostro Paese, che si appresta
ad un cambiamento radicale
nell’assetto
delle
proprie
istituzioni. E se si parla di
riforme, non si può prescindere
da quella della legge elettorale,
in Italia e all’estero.
Quindi sicuramente il voto
all’estero va rivisto e riformato
ma abolirlo significherebbe
disconoscere in un colpo solo
milioni di Italiani. E questo gli
Italiani, che hanno dovuto, loro
malgrado, emigrare per dare un
futuro migliore alle loro famiglie,
non se lo meritano. Quindi il mio
obiettivo sarà quello di lavorare,
nelle aule parlamentari, operando
all’interno dello schieramento
in cui sono stata eletta, affinché
gli Italiani all’estero possano
continuare a dar voce alle loro
istanze e conservare le conquiste
fin qui ottenute.
Quali sono gli argomenti
che intende portare avanti
per rappresentare le più
importanti esigenze dei suoi
elettori?
Un argomento che intendo
portare
avanti
riguarda
i giovani che emigrano
dall’Italia. Il fenomeno delle
migrazioni giovanili verso
l’estero sta raggiungendo
livelli preoccupanti. E’ il
sintomo di un malessere che
purtroppo sta coinvolgendo
il nostro Paese. Ritengo
assolutamente necessaria una
politica di apertura che possa
venire incontro alle esigenze
dei nostri giovani in cerca
di occupazione, sempre più
spesso oltre oceano. Un punto
cruciale è l’informazione. I
giovani devono poter avere una
guida che li aiuti a destreggiarsi
meglio in un Paese competitivo
e complesso, dal punto di
vista delle immigrazioni,
come l’America. Sarebbe
importante che i consolati
istituissero un ufficio dedicato
a dare supporto in materia di
visti, opportunità lavorative e
assistenza sanitaria. Bisogna
creare accordi con le università,
per poter offrire già nella
scuola un numero maggiore
di programmi di scambio,
e creare così l’opportunità
di una formazione e di una
esperienza internazionale e
quindi competitiva. Inoltre
ritengo che le numerose
società italiane con sede negli
USA dovrebbero aiutare e
favorire l’inserimento dei
nostri giovani al loro interno,
attraverso una comunicazione
più efficace e trasparente.
E’
importante
proporre
programmi
di

AGOSTO 2013
mobilità dei giovani e stimolare
la loro curiosità per il nostro
Paese. Un’occasione unica
di avvicinarli con semplicità
alla cultura italiana in tutti
i suoi aspetti, dalla cucina
alla canzone, dall’arte alla
letteratura. E poi puntare sulle
associazioni e sulla creazione
di eventi, feste, occasioni
insomma in cui riunirsi, fare
amicizie, condividere l’essere
italiano o avere radici italiane...
c’è ancora molto da fare!
Lo scorso 5 luglio ho
presentato 3 progetti di legge
su tematiche a mio avviso
molto importanti per gli
italiani all’estero concernenti
il Museo dell’emigrazione
Italiana, l’associazionismo in
emigrazione e l’informazione
di ritorno. Tutti questi sono temi
tesi a preservare la memoria
della diaspora italiana nel
mondo ed a conservare vivo
il legame con la comunità di
origine. In seguito ad una visita
al Museo dell’emigrazione
Italiana (MEI), ho ritenuto
che l’immenso patrimonio
culturale in esso contenuto
dovesse continuare ad essere
fruibile in una struttura
come quella esistente poiché
in essa è possibile toccare
con mano la storia della
nostra gente, attraverso un
percorso organizzato dove
da miei colleghi, in primis
l’on. Narducci - recependo le
osservazioni fatte nella scorsa
legislatura, per arrivare a dare
stabilità al MEI. L’obiettivo
è quella di approvarla in
maniera bipartisan come già
si era profilato in passato e
finalmente dare collocazione
certa ad un Museo che è
il luogo della memoria di
una
parte
fondamentale
della nostra storia: quella
dell’emigrazione.
Allo stesso tempo, ho ritenuto
che le vicende attuali legate
all’emigrazione
debbano
essere cosa nota anche agli
italiani che sono sul territorio
nazionale per contribuire a
rafforzare quel legame ideale
tra le due Italia. Infatti, ho
promosso un progetto di legge
sull’informazione di ritorno
e l’informazione italiana
per l’estero in cui si chiede
all’emittente pubblica che
“nella definizione dei contenuti
della
programmazione
per l’estero della società
concessionaria del servizio
pubblico
radiotelevisivo,
l’Autorità per le garanzie nelle
comunicazioni e il Ministro
dello sviluppo economico,
nel fissare le linee-guida
sul contenuto degli ulteriori
obblighi del servizio pubblico
generale
radiotelevisivo”...
tengano conto “delle proposte
delle
associazioni
degli
italiani all’estero e delle realtà
regionali al fine di promuovere
il «sistema Italia» attraverso
la valorizzazione dei prodotti
tipici, delle eccellenze italiane,
delle iniziative culturali e
imprenditoriali e delle concrete
possibilità di interscambio
economico-sociale con le
comunità italiane all’estero e,
in particolare, con i giovani che
ne fanno parte”. Ed invece per
l’informazione proveniente
dall’estero, “al fine di
favorire la piena e concreta
partecipazione dei cittadini
italiani residenti all’estero alla
vita politica e sociale del Paese
e di agevolare la conoscenza
delle
attività
culturali,
scientifiche ed economiche
degli italiani all’estero”,
ritengo che “la società cui è
affidato mediante concessione
il servizio pubblico generale
radiotelevisivo garantisce la
Italian American Cultural Society
produzione e la diffusione
sulle reti nazionali, in tutte
le fasce orarie, comprese
quelle di maggior ascolto,
e sulle reti dedicate alle
trasmissioni
rivolte
alle
comunità italiane all’estero,
di contenuti radiotelevisivi
originali provenienti dalle
comunità di cittadini italiani
residenti all’estero per una
percentuale non inferiore al
5 per cento delle rispettive
programmazioni”.
Inoltre, per rafforzare il
legame con la terra di origine,
ho presentato un progetto di
legge sull’associazionismo in
emigrazione in cui, recependo
anche i preziosi suggerimenti
scaturitiinunrecenteconvegno,
al quale hanno partecipato
anche il Presidente Monti ed
il Ministro Kyenge, oltre al
mondo dell’associazionismo,
si prevede la riforma
della
legge
383/2000
sull’associazionismo sociale
per permetterne l’applicazione
alle associazioni operanti per
le comunità italiane all’estero,
in rispetto del fondamentale
diritto di uguaglianza stabilito
dall’art. 3 della Costituzione.
Infine,mistoimpegnandomolto
sul tema della cittadinanza,
facendo inserire un comma in
un disegno di legge proposto
dal mio gruppo politico in
cui si prevede il riacquisto
immediato della cittadinanza
per i nati in Italia che recatisi
all’estero l’abbiano persa.
Infine, lo scorso mercoledì ho
presentato un emendamento
al cosiddetto Decreto “Fare”,
in Commissione bilancio,
in cui si prevede che “I nati
in Italia, figli di almeno un
genitore italiano, che hanno
perso la cittadinanza in seguito
ad espatrio, per cause non
direttamente imputabili a loro
stessi o per motivi di lavoro,
riacquistano la cittadinanza
italiana nelle forme previste
dalla legge purché ciò non
sia in contrasto con accordi
bilaterali internazionali in
vigore”.
Lei vive ormai fra Roma e
il Connecticut, dove ha la
sua residenza americana:
proprio a Newtown, dove lo
scorso dicembre è avvenuta
l’orrenda strage alla scuola
elementare Sandy Hook.
Non è difficile portare avanti
un’attività che prevede
cospicuamente
la
sua
presenza sulle due diverse
sponde dell’Atlantico?
Si, vivo a Newtown dove lo
scorso dicembre purtroppo
è accaduta quella orribile
strage alla scuola elementare
di Sandy Hook e il pensiero
di quei piccoli Angeli della
mia Comunità volati in cielo
troppo presto mi lascia ancora
incredula. Newtown e’ un bella
cittadina, tanta natura, cavalli
e gente onesta. Possiamo solo
continuare a pregare per questi
piccoli Angioletti ...
Non è semplicissimo portare
avanti un’attività che prevede
la mia presenza sulle due
diverse sponde dell’oceano,
ma non è impossibile, anzi
con un po’ di organizzazione e
buona volontà tutto si fa! Certo,
sono consapevole del fatto
che sto, in qualche maniera,
rinunciando a tanto come
essere a casa in tempo per la
cena o essere presente alla
recita di mio figlio, ma dopo
un lungo esame di coscienza
e una profonda valutazione,
ho sentito la necessità di
candidarmi per dare una voce
a tutte quelle persone e per
aiutare a rinnovare l’Italia.
Non avrei mai pensato di
vincere! E invece eccomi
qua: è venuto quindi per me
il momento “to give back”
perché ho avuto tanto dalla
vita. Quindi sto facendo del
mio meglio per non deludere
quegli italiani che dandomi

fiducia hanno scritto il mio
nome sulla scheda elettorale.
Inconclusione:chedifferenza
vede, dal suo punto di vista,
tra il mondo della politica
in Italia e quello negli Stati
Uniti? Cosa dovremmo
imparare da loro?
Tanto per cominciare in
Usa esistono due partiti:
uno al Governo e l’altro
all’opposizione.TuttiiDeputati
e Senatori sono eletti tramite
il voto diretto del Popolo, la
nostra legge elettorale, diversa
da quella che vige nella
Circoscrizione estera dove ci
sono le preferenze, fa venire i
brividi ai politici americani per
non parlare dei rimborsi elettorali
che dovrebbero essere eliminati
perché sono a carico dei cittadini
e vengono gestiti dai partiti. E’
ovvio che tutto ciò ha portato
ad una crisi profonda, sono stati
chiesti sacrifici agli italiani, la
gente ha perso la fiducia nella
politica, è stanca ed arrabbiata.
Noi politici dobbiamo essere
i primi a dare il buon esempio
accettando di eliminare i propri
privilegi.
Dagli americani dovremmo
imparare il grande rispetto che
hanno per le Istituzioni ed il
grande orgoglio per la propria
Patria. Dovremmo insegnare il
senso civico già in primissima
età all’inizio della scuola
elementare, come fanno i bimbi
in ogni scuola americana che
ogni mattina con la mano sul
petto, in piedi, proclamano
il “pledge of allegiance” alla
bandiera americana. Dovremmo
imparare a pagare tutti le tasse,
perché pagare le tasse è un
nostro dovere e così i servizi
funzionerebbero meglio anche
in Italia.

Datome ha scelto, giocherà con i Pistons
L’ex capitano di Roma ha
annunciato la decisione sul
proprio profilo Facebook.
«Detroit mi farà crescere,
ringrazio la Virtus, Toti e i
suoi tifosi»
ROMA - Dopo aver flirtato
nelle scorse settimane con
i Boston Celtics e con i
Memphis Grizzlies, Gigi
Datome ha finalmente
preso la sua decisione: il
prossimo anno la stella
della Nazionale giocherà
nella NBA con la maglia
dei Detroit Pistons. Lo
ha annunciato lo stesso
giocatore sulla sua pagina
Facebook. «Ho deciso di
diventare un giocatore
dei Detroit Pistons - ha
annunciato Datome - Penso
che possa essere il posto
giusto per permettermi
di fare un
ulteriore
salto
di
qualità nella
mia carriera
e
per
realizzare
il sogno di
una
vita.
Sono molto
eccitato
all’idea
di unirmi al gruppo dei
giocatori di Detroit. Voglio
ringraziare la mia famiglia,
il Presidente Toti, tutta la
Virtus Roma e con la Virtus
tutti i suoi tifosi per il loro
continuo supporto. Voglio
anche augurare alla Virtus
il meglio per il futuro».
Datome diventa così il
sesto giocatore italiano
che va a giocare nella NBA
dopo Esposito (Toronto),
Rusconi
(Phoenix),
Bargnani
(Toronto),
Belinelli (ora ai San
Antonio Spurs, lo scorso
anno a Chicago) e Gallinari
(Denver). Datome firmerà
un contratto biennale del
valore di 3.5 milioni di
dollari totali.

Confederations: Italia chiude terza
Battuto l’Uruguay 5-4 ai rigori, supplementari finiti 2-2
(ANSA) - ROMA, 30 GIU - L’Italia ha conquistato il terzo
posto nella Confederations Cup, battendo l’Uruguay 5-4
dopo i rigori.
