known as the home of Walmart Stores, Inc., Bentonville has
boomed in population, amenities, and attractions over the
last several years. A cultural revitalization of parks, public
gardens, museums, and restaurants is underway driven by
the opening of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

Founded in 1837 and named in honor of Senator Thomas
Hart Benton, Bentonville was the first town established in Benton
County, once the leading agricultural region in the state.
The city’s nickname, “The Fruit City,” was earned in part by
the fact that Benton County was the largest apple-producing
county in the United States – with an unprecedented 300+
varieties originating from Bentonville itself.
Blight devastated the area’s fruit industry in the early 1900’s
and forced the community to concentrate on local business
which continues to thrive. While strolling the Bentonville
Square today, it is easy to imagine a turn of the century
bustling community-everything from an opera house and
movie theaters to doctor’s offices and merchant shops, all the
way to a distillery and more have found a home in downtown
Bentonville over the years. The statue in the center of the town
square was dedicated in 1908 in memory of Confederate
soldiers and is to this day one of the most photographed
vignettes in our community.
On a sunny May morning in 1950, a young man by the name
of Sam Walton opened the doors to the family business on
the west side of the Bentonville Square. It is from that single
location with its simple red and white striped awning – which
is now the official Walmart Visitor Center – that the Walton’s
breathed life into what would become one of the world’s largest
retail empires. The rest, as they say, is history.

As we enjoy continued growth
and prosperity as a community,
one of the most exciting projects to date is the Crystal
Bridges Museum of American Art. This premier national art
institution dedicated to American art and artist is founded
by Alice Walton, daughter of the late Sam & Helen Walton.
The Museum houses works from American artists along with
galleries dedicated to regional art and artists and rotating
exhibits.
The entire Crystal Bridges campus sits on 120 acres of lush
forest, and the Museum gets its name from a nearby natural
spring and from the unique bridge construction incorporated
into the building design. The glass and wood design by
world-renowned architect Moshie Safdie features a series of
pavilions divided by two spring-fed ponds. Visitors experience
not only the museum, but also the park-like setting of a series of
urban trails peppered with interactive sculpture and gardens
connecting the campus to beautiful Downtown Bentonville.
As proud as we are of our past, Bentonville is just as excited
about the opportunities for our community that lie ahead.

One of the most popular attractions in Bentonville is the
Walmart Visitor Center located on the Downtown Bentonville
Square at 105 North Main Street. It is the original location of
the Walton’s 5 & 10, the retail venture launched by Sam Walton
in 1950. View everything from the exact re-creation of Sam’s
personal office to his favorite old Ford truck as well as many
other Walton family treasures. The center underwent major
renovations and expansions in 2010-2011 to include more
interactive exhibits and displays as well as the Spark Café, a
1950’s style soda fountain and coffee shop. More renovations
are planned for 2012 to include meeting and gallery space.
The Walmart Visitor Center is truly a family friendly museum
that visitors enjoy exploring again and again.

West Peel on the outskirts of Bentonville, Peel Mansion is
a marvelous exampleof Italianate structure surrounded by

Conference Center are named after Dr. Neil Compton, a
noted Bentonville physician, writer, photographer, founder
of the Ozark Society, and savior of the Buffalo River.
The Conference Center is the re-modeled home of Dr.
Compton and now serves as a rental facility for seminars,
conferences, workshops, retreats, intimate weddings,
and private events. The green oasis that surrounds the
conference center consists of 6.5 acres of native woodland

facility is divided into five different time periods that will

We consider it 53 acres of fun! You will find tennis, sand
volleyball, soccer fields, and basketball courts as well as
baseball and softball fields. Memorial Park also features two
playground areas, walking trails and a large covered pavilion.

MELVIN FORD AQUATIC CENTER
We take swimming seriously in Bentonville. The Melvin Ford
Aquatic Center is part of the Memorial Park complex and
features an Olympic-sized pool, diving pool, waterslide,
wading pool, and a raindrop fountain for toddlers. Located
at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., and John
DeShields Blvd. in Bentonville.
PHILLIPS PARK
Covering 40 acres off SE “J” Street, this park features a
playground, youth baseball, youth softball and multipurpose fields.
DISC GOLF COURSE
18-hole disc golf course located at Lake Bella Vista, adjacent
to Highway 71.
ERNEST G. LAWRENCE PLAZA
Bentonville’s newest sports recreation complex, Lawrence Plaza
features ice skating in the winter months and converts into a
splash park during the summer. In the winter, Bentonville hosts
exhibitions from skating athletes from around the state. The
park also features an amphitheatre where music and movies
are scheduled during festival days.
TIGER ATHLETIC COMPLEX
This state-of-the-art stadium and multi-purpose facility includes
an indoor turf field, work-out facility, and football stadium
that seats 6000 complete with a press box. Included in this
complex is a 1000 seat baseball and softball complex, 500
seat soccer and track facility as well as Tiger Arena which
houses basketball, volleyball, and auxiliary courts totaling
three full courts with the main arena seating 1700.

Arvest Ballpark
The excitement surrounding the Northwest Arkansas Naturals
begins at the new Arvest Ballpark which opened for its inaugural
season in April 2008. This 2010 Texas League Champion is an
affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. As per the Professional Baseball Agreement, every Major League team uses a Minor League
System to meet their developmental needs and that development is
happening right down the road from Bentonville.
Look for the hairy, loveable sasquatch, the team mascot “found
right here in the mountainous terrain of the Ozarks,” complete
with a big smile on his face and proudly wearing the number
“08” on the back of his Naturals home jersey out in the

MASTER TRAIL PLAN The Bentonville Trail System consists
of three looped trails within the parks, seven linear pedestrian
pathways and bikeways along city streets, an all-terrain mountain
bike trail, and on-road bicycle routes, creating a network of over
35 miles of trail. Plans are underway to connect Bentonville
to Fayetteville via the Razorback Regional Greenway. The full
greenway is estimated to be complete by December 2013.

LAKE BELLA VISTA TRAIL This
is a marked, paved 1.75 mile
trail that features benches, picnic tables, a playground and a
Disc Golf Course. Take in the beauty of the lake which covers
22 acres and is approximately 8 feet deep. Located adjacent to
Highway 71 and running around Lake Bella Vista, it’s perfect for
bikers, hikers and dog walkers!
Crystal Bridges Trail This paved bike and pedestrian
trail begins at beautiful Compton Gardens and winds north
through lush tree canopy-covered paths. Stop off at the Crystal
Bridges Observation Deck to view Crystal Bridges Museum of
American Art from this incredible vantage point. Continue on
the path and connect to the North Bentonville Trail. Great for
leisurely walks, bicycles, dog walkers, strollers and runners. The
trail is ADA accessible.
TANYARD CREEK NATURE TRAIL This trail features a 2
½ mile loop complete with swinging bridge and a view from
above of the Lake Windsor waterfall. It is located in Bella
Vista, approximately 1 ½ miles west of Highway 71 on
Highway 340 in Bella Vista.
PEA RIDGE NATIONAL MILITARY PARK TRAILS

This facility features three separate trails for hiking, biking
and horseback riding. Located on Hwy 62E in Pea Ridge.
ROCK LEDGE TRAIL This 1/2 miles trail takes it name from
the rock bluffs once carved into the hills to make way for a
19th century railroad that was never completed. This soft
surface, pedestrian-only trail overlooks several sculptures and
the Crystal Bridges Trail.

features state-of-the-art exhibits and is located just 15 miles
east of Bentonville Town Square on State Highway 12. At
Hobbs State Park, find long ridges, steep hollows, indigenous
wildlife, wildflowers and more. Trails include:

(16 miles, hiking, biking and horseback riding welcomed)
• PIGEON ROOST TRAIL

The Bentonville Bark Park is an off-leash recreation area for dogs
and dog lovers. The primary purpose is to provide exercise and
socialization opportunities for our four-legged friends while promoting
responsible dog ownership through events and programs.
ORCHARD TRAIL Orchard Trail provides access to Crystal
Bridges Museum of American Art’s main entrance from
Orchards Park and NE J Street. This hard surface half mile
trail is great for walking or biking and has a gentle slope.
ART TRAIL The 1/3 mile Art Trail features sculpture, an
amphitheater, and connects the Museum’s south entrance to
the Crystal Bridges Trail. Trail provides access to springs and
features many native plants, including cone flowers, American
basket flowers, and black-eyed susans.
DOGWOOD TRAIL Pedestrian friendly, the 1 mile Dogwood
Trail features over 500 dogwood trees that flower during
spring. In addition to being the longest trail on Crystal Bridges
property, the Dogwood features several natural seating areas
carved out of the forest. Trail connects to the Rock Ledge Trail
and the City of Bentonville’s Enfield Trail.
TULIP TREE TRAIL/CRYSTAL SPRING TRAIL The crushed
granite Tulip Tree Trail features some of the largest trees on the
Crystal Bridges grounds, and includes access to the Tulip Tree
Shelter which was fashioned from a scale mock-up of the Museum’s
pine beamed roof structure that was created during the design
phase. Forming a loop from the Tulip Tree Trail, Crystal Spring
Trail features a natural spring that flows from the ground at a cool
50 degrees and feeds into the Museum’s ponds. This 1/2 mile
trail provides access to the Museum’s Great Hall and South Lobby.
