kapitan khlebnikov
One of four Sorokin-class icebreakers built
to escort merchant marine flotillas through
the pack ice of the Russian Arctic, Khlebnikov
became an expedition vessel in 1991.
Since that date, the icebreaker has earned a reputation
unequalled by any other expedition vessel. The flydeck
affords 360° views, providing the perfect platform
for photography, bird watching or appreciating the
extraordinary landscapes of the polar regions.

greenland semi-circumnavigation:
august 4 to 24, 2011
arctic passage: august 22 to september 13, 2011
Peter was a member of the SIRIUS dog sledge patrol, in
Greenland. The primary task of SIRIUS is to maintain the
Danish/Greenlandic sovereignty over the most remote part
of Greenland (North and Northeast Greenland). Mikkelsen
lived for more than 4 years in Greenland’s Final Frontier
and traveled thousands of kilometers by dog sledge, boat
and kayak. He will share his adventures during the voyage

Producer, director, cameraman and explorer, John Murray
filmed a portion of Franklin’s Lost Expedition aboard Kapitan

the underwater location of Erebus and Terror, Franklin’s lost

presentations about the expedition as well as his adventures
filming in the wildest places on Earth from the North Pole to

WONDROUS COLD:
AN ANTARCTIC JOURNEY
In her extraordinary photography, Joan Myers captures the
majestic beauty of Antarctica. Her work documents the
haunting beauty and the rare wildlife of these remote regions.
She also, perhaps most powerfully, captures the spirit of
curiosity and perseverance that drew past explorers and
continues to draw adventurous and remarkable people to
The White Continent.
At Quark Expeditions, we understand that spirit. We’re
proud to sponsor Wondrous Cold: An Antarctic Journey
in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling
Exhibition Service.
The exhibition opened at the Smithsonian’s National
Museum of Natural History in May 2006 and will tour the
US through 2010. We invite you to visit the exhibit when it
comes to a community near you. For dates and locations,
visit www.sites.si.edu. A companion book is available in
bookstores everywhere.
