Letter from the Director More than we could imagine Each one of us had a time when our expectations were completely exceeded with some over the top moment. Whether it was “The” Christmas gift, a random act of kindness, or just some other moment Thaddaeus Hill that brought an unexpected smile, we all have had something or someone in our lives that went above and beyond what we could have hoped or imagined. This idea is most clearly stated in Ephesians 3:20 where Paul writes, “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to His power that is at work within us.” This describes life at Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch over the last year. We experienced growth, blessings, and favor that surpassed every idea, dream, and goal we had. Beyond opening up four new homes in 2014, we have enjoyed the new relationships developed with residents at the Ranch who have historically come from foster care but now also come from homeless shelters and jail. THCR also opened its second home for young women ages 18-25. God opened up some doors we could never have imagined and the Ranch family is overflowing with gratitude for His love, mercy, and favor upon this work. Thank you for loving the fatherless young people of this world enough to invest your time, talents, and treasures over the last year at THCR. The relationships we share with each one of you are so meaningful to us. We are excited to see how God is going to continue to use these relationships to change this world one life at a time. Grateful for you, Thaddaeus Hill “build a place where kids could live, be loved, feel safe, and have wide open spaces to ride horses.” HISTORY OF THE RANCH Jerry Hill, the founder of THCR, came to Riverhead, NY to preach for a church in the 60’s and 70’s. He and his wife Fern opened their home and hearts to dozens of foster children who were homeless and in need of temporary housing. Their older son, Timothy, saw the painful hardships and emotional suffering that the children had endured, and was deeply affected. He told his parents he wanted someday to "build a place where troubled kids could live, be loved, feel safe, and have wide open spaces to ride horses." Timothy began working at age 12 to save money for the land where his dream could become a reality. He worked three paper routes and had already begun contacting real estate agents in search of property. Fern recalls fielding several return calls from disgruntled real estate agents. She simply explained to them that she could not discourage her son from following his dream. On May 11, 1972, a tragic bicycle-truck accident ended Timothy’s life at the young age of 13. His mother, seeking a way to commemorate his life, wrote a book called Graduation to Glory which recounted Timothy's altruistic years and his visionary dream of opening up a ranch for troubled children. Friends and neighbors responded spontaneously resulting in the creation of a memorial fund earmarked "for Timothy's Ranch". Jerry and Fern adopted their son's dream and God has blessed the journey ever since. Timothy Hill Children's Ranch (THCR) opened its doors for the first time on November 15, 1980. For more than 30 years, THCR has been a safe haven for hundreds of children in their desperate times of abuse, neglect, and crisis. The Ranch is a 70 acre, farm-style campus, located in Riverhead, NY. THCR is licensed by the NY State Office of Children and Family Services and is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. vision Transforming hearts and changing lives through love mission strengthening character by modeling christ-centered values core values Faith in Christ * Passion * Integrity SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR March * Harding University, Searcy, AR VOLUNTEER GROUPS July * Red Bank Church of Christ, Chattanooga, TN * Iglesia Pentecostal Unida Latinoamericana, Elmhurst, NY May * Knoxville Christian School, Knoxville, TN * Highland Church of Christ, Cordova, TN June * Highland Church of Christ, Abilene, TX * Target, Riverhead, NY August * Susquehanna Valley Church of Christ, Selinsgrove, PA October * Princeton Church of Christ, Princeton, NJ A special Thank You to all of our volunteers who help throughout the year! I am the youngest. To say I never got my fair share of beatings would be a lie. I grew up learning that fighting was the answer to everything. My father left us on my eighth birthday, said he was going to get me a present and never came back. So my mom was the only adult in the house, with eight knucklehead sons. At an early age I was the one who my brothers would get to do their dirty work. I started getting into trouble at 14, then went to jail for the first time at 15. I’m now 19 years old and I’ve been at the Ranch for 5 months. I thought I’d just spend my life in jail, get out, probation, catch another charge, and just keep going that way. But now I see that I don’t have to be that kid. I don’t have to always be in trouble, and fight my way out of everything. The Ranch is teaching me how to live with people and respect others. I work hard and am proud that I’m a good worker. I know that coming here will help me the rest of my life.” Johnny - 19 “I grew up in a normal family. I really can’t blame circumstances or hardship or mistreatment for my actions and my situation. I wanted to be somebody. I saw that people who cheated and stole got things I wanted. The music I listen to promotes all that. So I did it. My dad is a pastor at a church, the church I grew up in. I robbed a store with another guy, and got caught. I shamed my family. Now that I’m at the Ranch, I’m proud to say that I am changing. I’m doing well here and regret what I did to get here. When I leave I will succeed and make my dad proud again. I’m blessed to be here.” Steve - 18 “When I was sent to the Ranch, I was like ‘no way, I’m not staying here for one night’. Not because it wasn’t nice, or the people weren’t nice, but because at that time I wasn’t going to be anyone’s project. I knew that I needed a place to live, and I couldn’t stay at my house anymore, it was unsafe and I didn’t know when I’d be hit next. But I couldn’t be told what to do or where to be or how to do anything. I was an angry person. I still have a lot of anger, but I’m learning to control it and change direction. I used to fight, now I talk, or write out my feelings. I also never thought I’d finish high school. I didn’t even want to, didn’t care. But the Ranch made me be in school to my dismay, and now I’m graduating in June! I am proud of myself. I love the Ranch and my people here and don’t know where I’d be if I wasn’t here right now. Thank you for being there for me.” Tina - 17 Graduated in 2014 year at a glance 2014 has been another tremendous year of growth for THCR. We’ve grown from 35 residents in 2013 to 58 at the end of 2014. While we use numbers as a form of calculating progress for a number of reasons, the true growth at the Ranch is in the hearts of our residents who come and go from us throughout the year. We know that the seed planted here in their hearts is our core purpose, and we trust God that he will continue to water it. The changed lives we experience here and share with you is the boast we make and will continue to make as we reflect on the past year! Four new homes and new program, Project 180° created. The Ranch is incorporated. Second SILP home opened. New Boys Right Path Second group home opened. 1976 1980 1984 New Girls Project 180° 2004 First group home opened. Supervised Independent Living Program created for young men 18-21. 2006 New programs created and two homes opened for Right Path and Girls SILP. 2013 New Boys Project 180° New Boys Project 180° 2014 The First ‘Right Path’ house. New Girls SILP ranch Programs RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM: 24 residents Provides residential care to boys, ages 1018, that are in need of a therapeutic environment. The Ranch is focused on education, individual counseling & family counseling, vocational training, horsemanship/adventure program and spiritual direction. BOY'S SILP (SUPERVISED INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAM): 6 residents Transitional living for young men, 18-21 years of age coming from the Department of Social Services, Foster Care division. Each young man will attend school full-time, work-full time or a combination of both.* RIGHT PATH: 10 residents The Right Path program is a 12-18 month program for young men ages 17-21 who are recently released from the Suffolk County Department of Corrections. The Right Path program provides a home for these young men who would otherwise be homeless or returning to negative environments, and teaches them how to become productive citizens through career counseling, caseworker & caretaker support and creating a plan to transition back into the community. GIRL’S SILP: 4 residents In August 2013, the Ranch was able to fulfill Timothy’s dream of becoming a Ranch for “Children”. This was accomplished by opening up a home for young women,18-21 years of age, who are in need of transitional living.* ranch Programs…continued PROJECT 180: 12 residents Project 180 is designed for young men and women (18-24 years of age) who are facing the hardship of living in homeless shelters or had aged out of the foster care system. The ultimate goal of this program is for participants to reenter the community by way of securing a job, having a stabilized income, obtaining housing and becoming self sufficient. Participants will commit to a minimum of a one year stay.* * All Transitional Living Programs (12-18 months) require, upon completion, that residents have a drivers license, GED or high school diploma, full-time employment, and $10,000 in the bank before transitioning out of program into society 60 ____________________________________________ 45 ____________________________________________ 30 ____________________________________________ 15 ____________________________________________ 0 ____________________________________________ 2011 2012 Residents 2013 2014 GRADUATES “When residents come to us, they are fearful of education. They often feel so discouraged due to a lack of guidance and a history of failure, flunking out, etc., that they have literally given up on the possibility of success. What we try to do is reintroduce the power of accomplishment, and rebuild their confidence so that school and the pursuit of good grades becomes exciting again. With close and intentional instruction, and patience, we see this shift that leads to graduation. We are so proud of those who’ve made it to the finish line, and many head out to college.” - Penny Goodale, Learning Center Director With over 10 new graduates this year, most who never dreamt of finishing high school, 2014 was an educational success at THCR. One of our young residents is the first in his family to have received a diploma. He was ecstatic holding it and posing for a photo. We’d like to thank all our supporters, board of directors, staff, and Dream Ranchers who continue to enable the Ranch to “transform hearts and change lives through love”. These are a few of the smiling faces who are the fruit of that labor. 80th Birthdays! We’re so proud and happy to have celebrated Fern and Jerry Hill’s 80th birthdays this past year. As the founders of the Ranch and loyal servants for the past 40+ years, these two are amazing inspirations to all of us. Not only do they still work full-time for the boys and girls at the Ranch, but they are still full-time caretakers at the Hospitality house for four of our residents in the Supervised Independent Living Program. But most importantly, they are the spiritual leaders and prayer warriors on behalf of residents and staff alike. We can’t thank God enough for Fern and Jerry. were are they now? Over the 34 years of open doors at THCR, we’ve had a number of residents come to us and later return as staff. Before coming on board, they have completed our program and proven themselves through integrity, honesty, work ethic and maturity. We currently employ two young men who successfully graduated our programs and are outstanding leaders on campus. “I grew up in and out of foster homes. When you bounce around and don’t seem to fit with any family, you eventually get sent to a group home. After a few of them, I ended up at Timothy Hill where I finally felt like I found a home. And I have. After 3 years here, this is my family. I’m honored to be on staff now and love my job. I feel like I can be a real example to the younger residents, as they all know I was once one of them. But they know they can’t fool me, I already know all the tricks (laughs). My favorite part of the job is hanging with the boys and playing ball. We’re on the court a lot and it’s a great escape for them and me, to work hard, and play hard. I love this place and love working for the Ranch now. Thank you.” -Justin Brown, 21 “My parents weren’t around for me when I was young so I lived in foster homes. I got bounced around the system mostly because of abuse at those foster homes. I know the boys who come to this place. They are me. We are all very similar, same stories, same situations, slight differences. I know how they feel, why they can be angry, sad, act out. I know why they are here. I feel like this gives me a special perspective as a staff member. I’m a crew leader five days a week working with four to five guys a day on different maintenance projects, landscaping, or snow shoveling all winter. And I’ve recently taken the position of a care taker at one of our Right Path houses and have five boys who’ve come from jail living with me. I love what I do and know that this is my opportunity to give back. The Ranch gave me a second chance and a new life, and now I can do that for the guys I work with.” Larry Walker, 21 2014 Wagon Wheel Club There was a time when a wagon wheel was used to help propel people and supplies forward over mountains and through rivers all across this great land. However, that wheel was only as strong as the spokes that supported it; so it is also with the contributors who support the mission of THCR. They allow a place to exist for children to travel safely forward in a direction of faith, hope and love. From January of 2014 through December 2014, the following have given $1,000 or more to support the wheels of Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch: Aberdeen Church of Christ, Aberdeen, MD AC Lighting & Electrical Supplies, Smithtown, NY Dr. & Mrs. Frank Adipietro, Shelter Island, NY Mrs. Denise Alexander, Franklin, TN Dr. & Mrs. Brian Alexander, Little Rock, AR Ms. Sue Alford, Quogue, NY Allensville Church of Christ, Allensville, KY The Allstate Foundation, Northbrook, IL Mr. & Mrs. Robert Ammerman, Buffalo, NY Mr. & Mrs. Craig Amodemo, Westhampton Beach, NY Mr. & Mrs. Ralph G.
