If interested please contact Secretary Charles Tramer at 941-371-0720 or e-mail at charfrasarasota@verizon.net There are lots of events to choose from this month. The Potluck Dinner on Saturday the 6th, Selby Garden tour and dinner at P F Changs on Tuesday May 10th (Still time to sign up if you hurry), Prime Timer’s board meeting on Wednesday May 11th, the North Lunch at Peach’s restaurant on Thursday the 12th, the Harvey Milk Festival which runs from the 12th to the 14th, (the main festival at Five Points Park is on Saturday the 14th), the South Lunch at Harry’s Sports Bar on Thursday the 19th and the May Membership meeting on Sunday the 22nd, and dinner at the Lazy Lobster at 4:30 following the membership meeting. Our monthly food bank collection is going well. Dale Moore took 54 pounds of food to the All Faiths Food Bank in April. We will continue to collect food items at both our potluck dinners and our monthly membership meetings. Thanks to Dale for taking time to handle this project. Your donation each month is important to those in our community who are unable to provide for themselves. We are looking for a person to update our website on a monthly basis. The person who has handled this in the past is no longer available, so we need a volunteer with some computer skills to step up. It doesn’t take a lot of time, but we need someone who will update it on a regular basis to keep our members and perspective members informed. Please keep Henry Brigham, Neil Croswell, and anyone else you know who is having health issues in your thoughts and prayers. David Simpson 2 April Membership Meeting At our monthly meeting in April, Clark West and Elliot Mitchell gave an interesting presentation on the new Our House of Sarasota at 200 N. Washington. The Center is envisioned to serve the LGBTQ community here in Sarasota by complimenting services and groups already serving that community and expanding and facilitating additional services. It will provide a safe and friendly home where various LGBTQ groups and individuals can meet and hold events, socialize, advance LGBTQ issues, HIV prevention education, and family and community acceptance training along with workshops. The purpose IS NOT TO REPLACE ANY EXISTING PROGRAM. Clark and Elliot have made a significant investment, both in time and money to get this program off the ground. If you were not there, you missed a very enlightening and challenging presentation. And YOU were missed also. Our next membership meeting is May 22nd Trinity Church. For further information go to their website at www.ourhousesarasota.com 3 The Passing of Woody Baldwin It is with a heavy heart that I relay the news of the passing of our founder, Woody Baldwin. Woody passed away quietly on the evening of Thursday, April 21 in Austin, Texas. He had been in declining health for some months. He had recently celebrated his 96th birthday. Woody was not only our founder; he was our leader; he was our teacher; he was our mentor and without him this wonderful organization would have never come about. He took a giant step in 1987 when he created Prime Timers in Boston. It was at a time when the senior gay male population was mostly ignored by society. He made a place and a reason for us to come together. Our handshake logo stands as visual evidence of how we join with one another in coming together in camaraderie and friendship and support and respect. We will be posting a page on the Prime Timers Worldwide website and ask that members come forward with stories and remembrances of Woody. Please look for this to appear in the next few days. http://www.primetimersww.com/ Woody's partner of 37 years, Sean O'Neill, preceded Woody in death on August 24, 2003. Our friends in Woody's home chapter of Austin, Texas, tell us that Woody did not want a memorial service but, instead, a celebration of his life. This will be held in early June in Austin and we will inform you of the details when they become available. This interesting and fun workbook is perfect for individual meditation or for group discussions and workshops. It’s not a theological treatise or designed to give you all the “right” answers. Jesus originated the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) method of teaching and there are a lot of examples, called parables, of Him using this approach, which are incorporated into this workbook. At the end of each chapter, there are “Spark Plugs” designed to fire up your thinking. You’ll be surprised just how much you will learn about yourself. It makes a wonderful gift for yourself or someone special, and at only $8, it’s a great deal. Don’t wait … learn today how to pray in a more meaningful way. Five members of Sarasota Prime Timers went on a Cultural People to People tour in Cuba this month: Joe Coulombe, Frank Hawkins, Gary Larson, Jack Mahoney and Bob Thommas. We stayed in three cities, Havana, Sancti Spiritus and Cayo Santa Maria. All places were completely different. Havana is a city of over two million residences. Sancta Spiritus is the oldest Cuban European settlement with a population of nearly 150,000. Cayo Santa Maria is an all-inclusive resort with over 8,000 rooms which was funded by Canada but Cuba owns 51%. This was a place to rest and relax a little after an intense week of education, travel and celebration. During our tour we had a full time tour guide specializing in Latin countries. We also had a full time Cuban tour guide and lecturer who has never been out of Cuba. Both men were really fantastic. There were a total of 25 US participants. We learned about the current culture, politics, food, art and music. There was music everywhere. We learned to make Mojitos and we had dance lessons. We visited major art galleries as well a museums and a mausoleum. There was a tour of a cigar factory, a visit to a UNESCO historic city, a local artist's home and a composer. The education was endless and the tour convinced most of us that we will return to Cuba. 10 Out and About with our Members 11 Exciting Travel Adventures from Prime Timers Worldwide for 2016 Travel opportunities sponsored by Prime Timers Worldwide: PRIME TIMERS FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND COURTYARD TRAVEL A River Cruise from the Beaches of Normandy to PARIS Aboard Croisi Seine Princess OCTOBER 16 TO OCTOBER 22, 2016 Main Deck Cabins -$2108 Insurance $162.00 Included are ALL Port Charges, Taxes, Daily Onboard Meals, Water, Juices, Wine, Soft Drinks with lunch and dinner, and Cocktails at the Bar.
