When times are tough we blossom; when it seems prudent to publish less we’ve increased our output, set up new lists, and found ways to keep the fragile local fiction market alive with support from the Jacana Literary Foundation. The Sol Plaatje European Union Award for Poetry in all 11 SA languages goes into its second year, chaired by the legendary Mbuyiseni Oswald Mtshali, whose Sounds of a Cowhide Drum is published in a new edition with isiZulu translations of the poems. The European Union Literary Award for best first novel and the Caine Prize for African Writing are wonderful sources of new talent, both local and from the continent. In the tradition of strong woman- and personality-driven lists we have, with Melinda Ferguson, set up MFBooks Joburg, which will showcase an astonishing pool of local talent. The Kelly Khumalo Story, both written and steered by Melinda, looks to set the tone for the imprint. We’re always looking for new and interesting partners, and we’ve had fun working with the Goethe-Institut, the African Centre for Cities at UCT, the convenors of the Ernest Cole Award, Michael Stevenson Gallery, Artlogic and the brand new 2SQ. We’ve co-published titles with both British and American publishers, not to mention those in the Antipodes. We are a little astonished at the strength of our list and we’re proud to be publishing the biography of Kgalema Motlanthe. We delight at the excellence of our fiction, the remarkable best-selling Rosamund Kendal with her sharp-as-needles crime thriller and Consuelo Roland’s beautifully noir novel; we revel in the revelations revealed in Barry Sergeant’s epic tale of banking jiggerypokery and the late but lingering Brett Kebble. Muzi Kuzwayo will shake our complacency, and we know that a broad audience will be enticed to read the story of radio journalist Redi Tlhabi’s loves and heartbreak. Our natural history list grows from strength to strength: The Rhino Keepers opens a new debate, and Trevor Carnaby extends his magic with a book for the whole family. The children’s list is a source of joy. The remarkable Niki Daly charms with his Madiba parable, The Herd Boy. Children will delight in the world of Kachoo, launching with three titles and a range of merchandise. Our authors are short listed for, and win, awards. We congratulate Ronnie Kasrils, McIntosh Polela, Dr Mongane Wally Serote, Denis Hirson and Terry Westby-Nunn for their achievements. We know that we’re only as strong as our authors, who make us feel mighty, and we also know that we’re supported by an amazing team of freelancers, printers and most of all, that remarkable gang that makes up Jacana. NON-FICTION With impeccable timing and a real sense of history this book for the first time allows the public to get to know and understand Motlanthe. This biography contains wide-ranging interviews with Kgalema, his family, his friends and comrades at Cosatu, the NUM, the SACP, the ANC and government. Unsparing in its scope, detailed in its revelations and with a rigorously critical analysis, this book will reveal not only the complex politician but also the very human nature of the man. It follows the author into the ANC’s military camps in Angola; to Moscow for intelligence training; to the underground in Botswana; and into leadership positions in the intelligence services and administration of the new government. It unpacks the oftignored conditions in which the ANC government had to try to turn apartheid around. The book investigates the personal, political, psychological and historical realities that gave birth to the new South Africa. Songs & Secrets is written in an anecdotal, cinematic style – providing glimpses into the small and big events that marked the author’s journey through the three decades of history that led South Africa and the ANC to the challenges they face today. In effect, it is a social history of a new class of educated and christianised African people who emerged in South Africa during the second half of the 19th century and claimed their place in the new world; their descendants continue to form the political and social elite in South Africa today. In celebration of the 15th anniversary of this momentous occasion, the book One Law, One Nation charts the story of the long fight for constitutional rights in South Africa, and the astonishing obstacles and complexity that lay behind the constitution-making process after 1990. This book is a popular account of the birth of what has been heralded as one of the world’s most remarkable constitutions. A complex, open-eyed book that grapples with some of South Africa’s most urgent social problems as they are refracted through one appalling, frustrating, inspiring place – the Central Methodist Church in downtown Johannesburg. How did a place of worship turn into a shelter for thousands of refugees? Where did they come from? Why are they still there? Kuljian fluently combines interviews with members of the refugee community and key figures like Bishop Paul Verryn with an understanding of urban dynamics, migrancy, and national and regional politics. In this memoir Kate Shand, John Peter’s mother, shares the horror, rage, grief and desolation of her own personal tsunami. She also shares a story of transformation, healing and love. Ultimately it is a story of a boy – just a boy like any other – and of a mother’s survival in the aftermath of the suicide of her child. Dystopia is achingly tragic in parts, outrageously funny in others and at times shockingly sordid. But above all it’s a story of one man’s triumph in the face of a disease that affects as much as one in 10 of the world’s adult population. The book James Frey could have written if he’d told the whole truth. Catapulted into national prominence with the release of her multiple award-winning debut album, Zandisile, in 2005, Simphiwe Dana has since carved a place for herself as one of the most significant artists of her generation. This book, penned by respected writer, cultural rogue and academic, Professor Pumla Gqola, is part biography, part analysis; unconventional like its subject, interested in understanding the ‘Simphiwe phenomenon’ and the world that makes her possible. Their experience of the war and their views and assessment of their South African enemies as well as their Cuban and Angolan allies will surprise and fascinate South African readers and at the same time offer new insights into the conflict. Prior to the Six-Day War, Israel was the darling of the international Left. But after its occupation of Palestinian territories in 1967, Israel found itself isolated from former allies and threatened anew by old enemies. The main attraction in the village is a ninehole golf course built by a displaced Yorkshireman, Harry Corkaby. The action is contemporary, reflecting current events, but the setting is timeless, a pastoral South Africa with little racial tension. The richest man in the area is Inkosi Dlamini; the poorest is Thabiso ‘Joseph’ Tshabalala, Harry’s employee. This is farming country with a very small and spreadout population, but the community comes together to pray and play golf. Makes visible, in a way I have not seen before, the Eastern Cape frontier wars.’ – William Kentridge Khalil, ‘the Companion’, is given his name by The One Above at his birth in 1903. Despite evidence of this divine interest, Khalil’s eighty-odd years of life remain fairly ordinary – even though many of these years are spent under the far from ordinary conditions of The System in South Africa. Ashraf Kagee, winner of the seventh annual European Union Literary Award, evokes the richly-textured beauty of everyday life of the last century’s Cape Malay and Indian cultures, and deftly captures the lyrical resonance of voices long forgotten by history. rIDE THE TOrTOISE Liesl Jobson Laura Marsh, art teacher and single mother, is horrified when a visiting friend finds a corpse in the plantations near her Pietermaritzburg house. Things go from bad to worse when the friend, a Zimbabwean refugee, is arrested for the murder. Concerned that Daniel has been arrested simply because he is a foreigner and unlucky enough to find the body, Laura tries to help him with a bit of amateur detection. But there seems to be a connection between Daniel and the dead man, and the deeper Laura digs, the more complicated the situation becomes. In this long-awaited collection, Liesl Jobson, internationally acclaimed for her mastery of the very short “flash” fiction form, turns to the longer form of the story. She writes with panache and hypnotic honesty about topics as diverse as anorexia, cleaning the oven, the terror of losing a child, exile, infidelity and desire. Few writers are as assured in traversing the terrain of loss and fear. Yet there is quirky humour and sly surprise in these stories told from the perspectives of policewomen, art teachers, athletes, bassoon players, lovers and mothers. In essence this is an unconventional love story, a candid memoir of how two women found each other at an inopportune time of their lives. In October 2004, Nadine Raal’s son Zack was born with a severe and complex congenital heart defect. Raal tells the often miraculous and sometimes heart-breaking stories of the children and their families whose lives crossed her path whilst battling for her son’s life. The threads run from Cape to Cairo, providing lessons that can be translated into a greater understanding of sexuality on the continent at large. The papers presented in this book are characterised by a wide-ranging view and tone that is often speculative and best viewed as a provocative introduction to an important field of enquiry, rather than as a state-of-the-art assessment of sexuality in Africa. To Have and To Hold: The Making of SameSex Marriage in South Africa explores the journey to same-sex marriage. This collection of interviews, essays and documents recognises the multiplicity of viewpoints on the topic, as well as the multiple aspects and efforts that shaped the making of same-sex marriage in South Africa. TRANS: Transgender Life Stories from South Africa takes the reader on a journey into the many worlds inhabited by transgender South Africans. The life stories recounted in this collection are both inspiring and compelling and reveal the courage and strength of each of the story tellers involved. The narratives detail the constant challenges of living in a country that, despite its progressive Constitution, is still host to myriad prejudices and misunderstandings when it comes to trans people. Animals roam freely in their wild domain through forests and grasslands and rocky terrain. Big cats and rhino and Thomson’s gazelle, elephant and zebra – they live here as well. The sights and the sounds in the Land of Kachoo are uniquely African and will remain with you. The roar of the lions on a starlit night and the echo of hooves running away in fright or the call of the fish eagle in the African sun are sounds to signal your safari’s begun. Come and explore this land, if you dare. A wild African adventure awaits you in there! The books all have an activity sticker page and map that take you into the heart of the Land of Kachoo.
