Vol. 14 No. 5
By Ray Koziol
This Cadillac was built by Bill Patch and was inspired
by the Wayne Kemp song “One Piece At a Time”
which was recorded by Johnny Cash in 1976. The
song is about a man who goes to work on the Cadillac
assembly line in 1949. Knowing he could never afford
a new Cadillac he decides to build one of his own by
stealing parts, a process which takes 24 years! How many different year parts can you identify?
This Cadillac is known as the Spa Car. This Eldorado has been stretched, given 4 additional wheels, a hot tub has been added which is located behind the rear window and
behind the tub is a complete wet bar. It might be a wee-bit cumbersome to drive, but
hey on a hot summer’s day it will come in handy!
I’ve always thought of funeral directors as being quiet and reserved but it appears the
one who commissioned this 1942 Cadillac hearse must have been a renegade. Believe it
or not this was a “garage find” in Argentina. Maybe it should have been left there and
allowed to “Rust in Peace”.
It’s only natural that Cadillac’s and money go together, but
not to this extent. These Cadillac’s have had pennies glued
to their sheet metal. It just doesn’t make any cents!
What were the owner’s thinking? A penny for your thoughts!
A ‘58 Cadillac camper and a high-top Eldorado station wagon with
2 extra rear wheels. The only explanation…..some people have
way too much free time on their hands.
Certainly not an oddball, but, this tank is a Cadillac. Now some refer to
Cadillac’s as a “tank”, which I take as a compliment as they are big,
heavy and powerful. In World War II Cadillac was also a hero as they
built tanks such as the M24 pictured. It was jointly designed by both
Cadillac and the US Army and powered by twin Cadillac V-8 engines.
Our region membership year is July 1st to June 30th and time does fly by quickly! Our region renewal forms and ballot are being prepared and will be e-mailed shortly. As this is a major project requiring a great deal of record keeping PLEASE RENEW EARLY. In years gone by I’ve received renewals
as late as October. These late renewals require extra effort and more importantly, they affect our region membership and retention numbers.
Your renewal package will include your renewal form and a ballot for our director’s election. This
year we have 3 openings on the board and three candidates. Although it is an uncontested election
our region constitution requires we provide you with a ballot and the board requests that you vote.
Both your completed renewal form and ballot, along with your check are to be mailed to our Post Office box. I’ve marked both the renewal form and ballot with a return date of no later than 6/13/2014,
but as indicated above I would appreciate your returns as quickly as possible. Those renewals received after June 13th may or may not be processed by 6/30 which can result in a lapse of membership.
As in years gone by I have asked for you to provide your national CLC membership number. PLEASE
BE SURE YOUR NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP IS CURRENT AT THE TIME OF YOUR RENEWAL. As you know we are a
sanctioned region of the national Cadillac LaSalle Club. Region membership also requires membership within the national CLC. Each year our membership roster is audited and we risk the loss of our
regional appointment if we are not 100% compliant with this requirement.
As is our policy, new members who have recently joined the region have automatically had their
membership extended to 6/30/15. These members will receive a ballot, their renewal dues have been
waived.
My thanks for your help and cooperation as our renewal program gets underway.

Your Happy Birthday wishes and the lovely card was
much appreciated. Unfortunately I was unable to
make the April meeting but to my surprise upon my
return home I found a piece of the birthday cake in
my mailbox. It was delicious!! All of your
efforts made a special
birthday even more
memorable.
Regards to all,

If you’re like me, at first glance it looks to be a ‘57/’58
Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Look a little closer and you
will see a ’57 Chevy! In actuality this is a 1957 Chevy
known as the El Morocco. It was built by Reuben “Rube”
Allender. He first introduced these cars in 1956 using off
the line ’56 Chevy Bel Airs. These were purchased new
and converted to El Morocco’s by his firm. For 1957 El
Morocco production continued although this would be the
final year of production. Exterior sheet metal changes and
badging modifications are the only changes which differentiate the El Morocco from your run of the mill ’57 Chevy,
but those changes have a tremendous visual impact.
Powered by the venerable 283 Chevrolet V-8 and using standard Chevrolet running gear, the cost to
the consumer for these conversions was about $1,000 over the cost of a standard Chevrolet. It was
Allender’s original intention to sell these through Chevrolet dealers. Unfortunately that plan didn’t
pan out. For 1956 approximately 20 were produced and for 1957, production totaled only 16, with
only 10 of those being four door hardtops like the car pictured above.
Very few El Morocco’s remain in existence today. There is only one 1956 convertible and six 1957s:
two 4-door sedans, two 2-door sedans and two convertibles survive. As you might expect these cars
are largely ignored by our Cadillac brethren, but among Chevrolet enthusiasts they
are very, very valuable. Of the few that remain, those that have changed hands,
have done so with values exceeding those of the cars which they imitate!
The blue four door pictured here was scheduled to be auctioned by Leake Auction Company at their
Dallas, Texas auction which took place April 25 & 26, 2014.

Most men try flowers to make things right with their wife and get out of the doghouse,
but when you’re married to Rita Hayworth, you gotta try a little harder than that – after
all, not even a one-of-two Italian-bodied Cadillac was enough to get her back. For the
judges at this past weekend’s La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, however, the same Cadillac had enough cachet to take a Best of Show award.
In the early 1950s, Italian coachbuilder Ghia looked to stabilize its business
by developing concepts or vehicles for a list of automakers that included
Volkswagen, Ford, Volvo, and Chrysler. Perhaps inspired by its success with
Chrysler, the company constructed a pair of Cadillac-based concepts for the
1953 Paris Auto Salon, reportedly in an attempt to foster a closer relationship
with Cadillac. Though technically not for sale, the concepts caught the eye of
Prince Ali Salman Aga Khan, then billed as the richest man in the world. In the
midst of a protracted divorce and custody battle with his wife, American actress Rita Hayworth, the prince (who favored the more common name of Aly
Khan) purchased the Ghia-bodied Cadillac for Hayworth, perhaps as a peace
offering. If that was his intent, the tactic failed; later the same year, the couple’s divorce was finalized, and Hayworth retained both possession of the
Cadillac Ghia and custody of her daughter.
Currently owned by the Petersen Museum, the Ghia concept relies on Cadillac Series 62 mechanical components, including its 210-hp, 331-cu.in. overhead valve V-8. It’s said to be one of the first automobiles to employ a quadheadlamp design, and its diminutive tailfins speak of automotive styling
trends that were in their infancy when the concept was penned. Among its
many distinctive styling touches are the wraparound rear window (bisected
by a thin trim strip), and surprisingly narrow A- and C-pillars. Finished in
white during Hayworth’s ownership, the car has
subsequently been repainted burgundy, and even
enjoyed a brief cameo appearance as one of Tony
Stark’s many automobiles in the 2010 blockbuster
Iron Man 2. As for the other of the Ghia-bodied Cadillacs, when last we checked it was in the Imperial Palace’s collection in Las Vegas.
