McHenry County Mental Health Board Weekly Agency Update APRIL 11, 2016 The purpose of the hot sheet is to get accurate information from providers, to providers in order to assist in facilitating quality care (Items in bold are new updates). EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES DEMENTIA DISCUSSION GROUP MEETING Mary Helen Ekstam, the JourneyCare Life Learning Advocate from Barrington will present “Hospice and Palliative Care and how they help manage pain and provide comfort and support to loved ones with Dementia”. She has over 30 years’ experience in healthcare administration and outreach and has presented at many conferences and workshops. She is an expert in medicine, music therapy and neurological rehabilitation. Family members, caregivers and loved ones are invited to attend, offer comments and ask questions. This meeting will be held at The Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Rd, McHenry, on Wednesday, April 13, from 10:00 to 11:30AM. FAMILY ALLIANCE, INC. Conference Series - Your story matters: Support for Family Caregivers will be Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 9:15 am to 12:30 pm at 12555 Farm Hill Drive, Suite 800 in Huntley. NAMI NAMI’s monthly general education and support group on April 21, 2016 at 7:00 pm will feature the video “All Too Soon” produced by Adrian and Andrew Nuno after being impacted by the suicide of their classmate in 2014. Shira Greenfield, a founding member of the McHenry County Suicide Prevention Task Force will facilitate a conversation with the audience around the signs and symptoms of suicide and appropriate interventions. MCHENRY COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH BOARD TRAINING OPPORTUNITY Adolescent Drug Use and Addiction training presented by Chris Gleason, MC, CAADC, will be on Friday, April 22, 2016 from 9:00 – 12:00 pm. This presentation will focus on the trends of adolescent substance use, providing information about the pressures adolescents face as well as developmental concerns. National trends, the pattern of addiction, as well as commonly used substances will be discussed. Registration deadline is April 18, 2016. Please see the attached flyer for additional information. MCHENRY COUNTY VETERANS RESOURCE FAIR & STAND DOWN Save the date! The Veterans Resource Fair & Stand Down will take place on Thursday, April 28, 2016 from 10 AM – 3 PM at the McHenry VFW, 3002 W. Route 120, McHenry (see the attached flyer). This informative and fun event is free and is open to anyone who served in any branch of the US military, regardless of dates of service or discharge status. Agency representatives who are interested in learning about services available to veterans are also welcome to attend. NAMI On May 19th, NAMI McHenry County will host an In Our Own Voice presentation by two people living well in their recovery. Hearing the steps of recovery for an individual with a mental illness diagnosis provides new insight and hope that life can be lived well. The presentation is scheduled from 7p-8p and will be followed with two support groups -- one for family members and one for those with a diagnosis. All are welcome!! MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH – As your agency begins planning your Mental Health Awareness Month events please let us know so that we may share your event with others through our network of providers. BERNOTAS VIKING STRONG 5K The first annual Bernotas Viking Strong 5K will be held on May 1st, 2016 at Lippold Park in Crystal Lake. This inaugural event is open to the general public and community is invited to run or walk for a great cause. The Viking Strong 5K aims to provide education and awareness around suicide prevention and depression in teens. Brain Injury Caregivers Support Group The Caregivers support group is for parents, spouses, and other family members giving care to an adult or child who has experienced a brain injury. This is an informal group providing mutual support and strategies to take care of oneself while caring for others. The Recovery International method is a system of cognitive behavioral techniques developed by neuropsychiatrist Abraham Low, MD, used to change thoughts and behaviors; changes in attitudes and beliefs follow. This group meets Mondays at 3:30pm at the First Congregational Church, 11628 E. Main St., in Huntley. Spousal Caregiver Support Group This Family Alliance support group is open to spouses caring for someone affected by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. This group meets every 2nd Monday of the month at 10:30 am – 12:00 pm at the Woodstock location. To RSVP call 815.338.3590. The Renewal Center – A Wellness Oasis for Cancer Survivors The Renewal Center focuses on people who have finished day-to-day medical treatment and are trying to move forward with their lives. The end of treatment is not the end of dealing with healing. When patients are in treatment, they are trying to survive and can’t really feel the full emotional impact that being diagnosed with cancer involves. Once patients have completed treatment they are ready to begin dealing with the emotional aspects and other issues of cancer survivorship. 4/11/2016 The Renewal Center, a 501(c) non-profit organization, enables cancer survivors to connect with others and build a supportive community. All services to cancer survivors are free of charge. PRESENTER Chris Gleason has worked in the Addiction field since 1995, working in DUI, outpatient, and inpatient mental health and substance abuse programs. He has also presented on many different topics both locally and nationally including Co-Occurring Treatment for Adolescents and Opiate/Heroin Addiction in both the Adult and Adolescent population. Currently he is the Director of Rosecrance McHenry County which provides outpatient counseling for both substance abuse and mental health. Chris is also an adjunct professor at Aurora University and is the Chairperson for the McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition.
