Cathy Dorin Lizzi has won
numerous national, state and
local titles throughout her
bowling career.
She has maintained a 200 plus
average for fourteen years.
Her highest average a 234 was
obtained in the 2007-08 season, her highest game 300,
(18) and her highest series a
805 (3) in 2010. She has had
over four hundred 700 plus
series.
Cathy was the Ohio WBA
Queens Champion in 2001 and
won the Ohio WBA All Events
Actual and Handicap in 2002,
and the Doubles with her partner Jamie Shinkle in 2002.
She was AMF World Cup
Champion in 1992, a member
of the West Texas A & M
Intercollegiate Team in 1992,
won the Three River Open in
1999, has five PWBA Regional Titles, and was a member of
the USBC Team Champion in
2006 and 2009.
Carol Taylor has been very busy
promoting and supporting the
sport of bowling for many years.
Her accomplishments speak volumes of what she has done. She
is also a mentor to everyone that
comes in contact with her.
She has been a WIBC/USBC
member for fifty-five years.
She was a Director on the Ohio
WBA/Ohio USBC WBA for nine
years.
During this time she
served on or chaired most of the
Ohio USBC WBA committees.
Carol became a Director on the
Warren Women’s Bowling Association in the mid 1960’s. She
served as President of the organization for ten years and served on
all committees. She is a Life
Member of the Warren USBC
WBA. She served on the original
Hall of Fame Committee of the
Warren WBA, was instrumental
in bringing the Inter City Tournament, the Ohio USBC WBA
Championship Tournament, and
Ohio 600 and 700 District Tournaments to the Warren area.

Ronnie Gaston Kirby was a
member of the Portage
County WBA and Akron
Area WBA for sixteen
years. Her high average of
218 was achieved during the
1989-90 season, her highest
series of 797 was rolled in
1986 and she rolled a 300
game in 1990.
She was the Ohio WBA
Championship Tournament
All Events Champion in
1987, the Singles Actual
Champion in 1990, and
High Series Champion in
1990. She won the Ohio
WBA Buckeye Belle Tournament in 1983, 1988 and
1989. She also won the high
average in the state with a
215 in both 1987 and 1988.
Ronnie was the Portage

1983, the All Events Champion in 1979, 1981, and

of Directors certainly had a lot to be
proud of for being such excellent
hosts at the 89th Annual Ohio
USBC WBA Convention Weekend.
I have heard many comments
about what a great weekend it was
from delegates and guests who
attended. Great job Cleveland
USBC WBA Board of Directors!
I would like to congratulate Kathy
Wingerter, Dover/New Philadelphia
USBC WBA and Ruth Stewart,
Cleveland USBC WBA on their reelection as Directors of the Ohio
USBC WBA.
What a
Convention
Weekend!
The conversations I have been
hearing from local associations are
they are expecting several of their
certified leagues not to certify for
the 2014-15 season. When
leagues do not certify, all associations lose; the local, the state and
United States Bowling Congress. If
we want to continue being a vital
organization and continue in operation on all levels, we must show
these bowlers what benefits they
are receiving by being a certified
league. I strongly encourage each
and every local association to begin
planning now to visit each league in
your local association when they
have their league organizational
meeting. If you are not able to attend all league meetings, at least
attend those leagues who you know
are considering not certifying next
season. Sure this is going to take
extra work on the part of the board
of directors of all locals, but isn’t it
worth it?
When visiting the leagues please
inform them of the benefits they will
receive when becoming a USBC
member, local member and state
member.

To all local association board
of directors you must also sell
your own local benefits. I cannot state what each local offers their membership, but you
know and need to sell yourselves also. Remember, when
that league does not certify,
USBC is not the only association that loses. You, the local
association, will lose revenue
as well. With membership
declining, we cannot afford to
lose entire leagues so we must
all work to promote certification.
To any person who is not on a
local board of directors and is
reading this article, I urge you
to explain the benefits of belonging and being a USBC
certified league if you are
bowling in a league who is
considering not certifying.
As I stated previously, this is
going to take extra work on
everyone’s part, but isn’t it
worth it?

Let your association be represented in the
Buckeye Belle Tournament. The tournament will be held at AMF Riviera Lanes
in Fairlawn on May 17, 2014.
The format is four games across eight
lanes, with total pins determining the
winners.
Entries will be sent to all
associations. Deadline is May 1,
2014. Alternates may be sent if your
winner(s) are unable to attend. Entrants
must be Ohio USBC WBA members.

In the Sandusky Local Tournament she
was a member of the Team Actual Champions in 2004-05, 2006-07, 2008-09 and
2009-10. The Sandusky Doubles Actual
Champion in 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06,
2006-07, 2008-09, and 2012-13. She has
been the Singles Actual Champion from
2004 through 2012 (7 years), and the All
Events Champion 2003 through 2013 (8
years). In the Sandusky Officers Doubles
in 2011-12, she and her husband Jeff set a
record of 1572. She has won the Sandusky
Open Singles in 1998 and 1999. She has
won the Sandusky Hall of Fame Tournament twice.
Carol not only has been a promoter of
bowling but has been an accomplished
bowler herself. She was a junior bowling
instructor and coach, had the high average
in her local association, member of three
winning teams in her local tournament
and has won the All Events title in her
local tournament. She is a member of the
Buckeye 600 Bowling Club, and a Life
Member of the Ohio Women’s 700 Bowling Club. She is also a member of the
National 600 Club and a Life Member of
the National les Dames de 700 Bowling
Club. She has bowled and placed in the
National Queens tournament and was in
the top twelve in averages in the nation.
She is a member of the Buckeye Bowling
Writers and the Ohio Local Association
Presidents Club.
She was the Akron WBA Local
Tournament Doubles Actual Champ
in 1985 and a member of the Team
Actual. In 1986 a member of the
High Team Actual Series and had
the High Actual Game of the tournament with a 297. In 1989 she was a
member of the Team Title Champs.
Cathy is a Bronze Certified Coach and has
been a Junior League Coordinator for ten
years. She was a four time collegiate all
star and two time collegiate All American,
Bowlers Journal International Amateur
Bowler of the Year in 1992.
She was a Professional Women’s Bowling
Association member from 1993-2004,
serving as President for three years. She is
a sideline reporter for ESPN/ESPN2 from
2000 to present and a Graphics Assistant
for Professional Women’s Bowling.
She was inducted in the New Jersey Hall
of Fame for Superior Performance.

She has organized teams and bowled in
forty-two WIBC/USBC national tournaments and is always promoting the Ohio
USBC Queens Tournament, the Ohio
Women’s 700 Bowling Club tournaments
and Buckeye 600 Bowling Club tournaments.
She was a member of the Akron Alley Cat All Star Team and Bowler of
the Year in 1981-82, 1982-83, 198586, and 1986-87. She was a member
of the Akron WBA All Star Team
and Bowler of the Year in 1985-86,
1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89, 198990. In 1985 she was a member of
the Greater Akron Bowling Proprietors All Star Team and the Akron
Beacon Journal All Star Team.
Ronnie was inducted into the Portage County Bowling Hall of Fame
in 2007 and the Tri-County Bowling
Hall of Fame in 2008.

USBC WBA Member’s accomplishments in Ohio
functions.

Bowlers will no longer be required to submit their
own credentials, as the Ohio USBC WBA will begin
tracking their standings and accomplishments in
Ohio functions.
The only information we will be unable to track is a
bowler’s High Series and Game - we URGENTLY
need all Local Associations to submit this information to the State Office for their members.
PLEASE! Don’t let one of your qualified members
miss out on this opportunity because your Local Association didn’t submit this information to the State
Office. As Local Association Managers, we have
access to this information through WinLabs. A report is available to us listing high scores - please

The 28th Annual Ohio USBC
Women’s Bowling Association
Queens Tournament was held
January 11 & 12, 2014 at Shamrock Lanes in Springfield, OH.
The field of 82 of the finest women bowlers in Ohio, representing
23 local associations, competed
for a share of the $5,580.00 prize
fund in this high scoring tournament.
Jennifer Higgins of Central Ohio
was crowed Queens Tournament
Champion and presented with an
award, tiara and a prize check.
Jennifer is the only three-time
Queens Champion and a back-toback winner. She moved flawlessly through the winner’s bracket undefeated to meet 5th seed
Kari Watson of Gr. Dayton USBC
in the final match, where she
scored 236 to Kari’s 229.
In the stepladder final matches,
5th seed Kari met and defeated
4th seed Rachael Delserone of Lorain USBC WBA 202 to 196, 3rd
seed Jessica Hatcher of Gr. Dayton USBC 194 – 181, and 2nd seed
Melissa Brenders of Cleveland
USBC WBA 267 – 202, which advanced Kari to the championship
match against Jennifer.

The 2nd Annual Ohio USBC Women’s Bowling
Association Senior Queens Tournament was
held December 7, 2013 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus, OH. The field of 30
of the finest senior women bowlers in Ohio,
representing 17 local associations, with a median average of 171, competed for a share of the
$1,020.00 prize fund.
Vicky Varvel of Mansfield USBC WBA was again
crowned the Senior Queens Tournament
Champion and presented with an award and a
tiara. In the first stepladder final match, 5th
Carol Pennington of Youngstown/Salem USBC
WBA bowled a 195 to 4th seed Susan Hartley of
Gr. Dayton USBC’s 187. Carol then defeated
3rd seed Roberta Havholm of Gr. Dayton USBC
183 to 169, and then moved on to Vicky. They
bowled to a tie (203). An immediate 9th & 10th
frame roll off was held with Carol bowling a 29
and Vicky a 50. Vicky advanced to meet our
top qualifier, Phyllis White of Central Ohio.
Vicky emerged victorious with a 199 game to
Phyllis’s 162.
The high game of the weekend was 266 by
Phyllis White. Carol Pennington, with her 4game series of 952 led the qualifying. Low to
qualify for the semi-final round was a 4-game
676 series. Low to qualify for the stepladder
finals was a 3-game
series of 615 by Carol Pennington.

Annual Audit Questions Raised
During the 89th Ohio USBC Women’s Bowling Association’s Annual Meeting questions were posed to the
board.
Question #1: With the decline in membership, how did the dues revenue increase between the 2011-2012 and
2012-2013 seasons?
Our auditor’s response: “I use the balances posting in your Quicken account entitled “Membership Dues”. I
have to first post 8/1/12 through 12/31/12 and then post 1/1/13 through 7/31/13 as you have your book set up
on a calendar basis. I posted $23,516.00 for 8/1/12 through 12/31/12 and $1,768 for 1/1/13 through 7/31/13. I
also posted another entry that I got from “Other Business Income” in the amount of $24,312.39. This amount
should have been Tournament Income. My error, I will have to restate your financials.”
Question #2: Why was there such a huge drop in resale income between the seasons of 2011-2012 and 20122013?
Our auditor’s response: “I have difficulty picking out resale items as you do not post them as such. So, I back
into an amount by the sales tax you paid. Many of your deposits are indicated as multiple type receipts and are
posted under “Other Business Income”.
I hope this answers the delegate’s questions. The auditor and I will be working closely this year to come up
with a more “mutually agreeable” way of recording all income and expenses. Should there be any further

forms in the mail. As announced at the Annual Meeting, we must have 75 participants in the tournament

Friday night started off the Annual Convention Weekend with the Buckeye Bowling Writers
hosting the annual Exchange Mart and Delegates Welcome Reception, where the theme “Bee a
Busy Bee” was very evident.
With thanks to the Cleveland USBC WBA for providing a DJ, the guests had a wonderful time
and learned something new!

QUEENS TOURNAMENT
Valley Lanes, Newark, OH
January 10 & 11, 2015
The 29th Annual Ohio USBC WBA Queens Tournament will be held January 10 & 11, 2015 at Valley
lanes in Newark, OH.
The tournament is open to all Ohio USBC WBA female members with a 170 or higher average in a
USBC certified league. Entry fee is $90.00. This is a double elimination tournament with entrants
rolling a minimum of six games. Entry forms will be available through all local associations and on
the Ohio USBC WBA website: www.ohiowba.com. Entries close December 15, 2013.

The Get Acquainted Dinner held on Saturday night during the convention weekend turned out to be a success. The Embassy Suites in Independence, Ohio provided an excellent menu. We had a choice of citrus basil
chicken, pork loin, or sliced roast beef which was accompanied with fresh market salad, steamed broccoli,
Yukon roasted potatoes, assorted rolls, assorted cookies, coffee and tea. The consensus from the guests at
the dinner was that the food was delicious. Between the Cleveland USBC WBA directors and their sponsors,
numerous door prizes were given. There was an unforgettable skit by the Ohio USBC WBA state board, office
workers and a few friends since the state will be hosting the convention and tournament in 2016. The skit
took us back to different eras in time to remind us of special groups, events, and a particular mode of clothing during our teens. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house watching Sonny and Cher, The Andrews Sisters,
Dorothy and Toto from the Wizard of Oz and others. If you weren’t there, you missed a treat.

Ohio USBC WBA Annual
Workshop Held February
22nd in Cleveland
Ohio USBC WBA President, Jean Tondola-Smith,
along with McCook ladies, Patti Slunt and Joan

The theme of our annual workshop was “Questions
Answered” and was attended by 231 participants,
representing 41 associations.
The afternoon started with Denise Thacker, member
of the Cleveland USBC WBA for over 20 years,

Taulbee. For Director: Kathy Wingerter, Ruth
Stewart and Angela Pickerell.
The top Associations were announced and recognized.
Ruth Heath-Trott, President, Gr. Toledo USBC, presented the tournament plaque to Eileen JacksonCarpenter, President, Cleveland USBC WBA,
Superior Performance and co-owner of the Pro shop
at Cloverleaf Lanes, along with her husband Ron
Thacker. Denise explained about balls, cleaners and
how not to be afraid to ask your Pro Shop owner
questions because you didn’t want anybody to know
how much you really didn’t know about your bowling equipment.

A few months ago, Ruth Smith, who served as the fifth
President of the Ohio WBA from 1975 until her retirement in 1990 and elected a Life Member of the Ohio
WBA Ohio USBC WBA in 1990, telephoned me and
stated that while she was alive, she wanted to donate
some of her personal items to the Ohio USBC WBA to
be used as a fund raiser for some of the many projects
and programs that we support such as the Bowlers Ed
Program, Scholarship, International Bowling Museum
and Hall of Fame, Bowlers to Veterans Link, and
Breast Cancer Awareness to name a few.
Ruth donated the quilt that was presented to her upon her retirement showing all of the local associations; a WIBC bowling ball, which has never been
drilled; an Ohio WBA throw; a white, handmade, crocheted afghan with red and black trim; and a white,
Angeltown, button down bowling shirt.
The Ohio USBC WBA Board of Directors has approved
to sell chances for these items at the cost of 1 for
$1.00, 3 for $2.00, or 10 for $5.00. These items will
be on display at the 2014 Annual Championship Tournament in Cleveland and the opportunity to purchase
chances for these items will be sold at both the doubles/singles center and the team center.
For those of you who will not be bowling in the state
tournament, you have the opportunity to purchase
chances via this article. If you do not want to destroy
your copy of the Hi-Lites you may put your name, address, telephone number on a piece of paper and indicate which item or items you would like to buy a
chance for. Please do not send cash, you may send a
check made payable to the Ohio USBC WBA.

The May 15th deadline to submit your “League
Awards” and “Most Improved Female Bowler”
is soon approaching. These programs are open to
all female bowlers that have paid their $1.00
State dues.
The program offers the opportunity for every
qualified female bowler to compete against female bowlers in their own average division.
Winners receive an award and State recognition.
League secretaries are requested to submit the
top 5 actual series scores in each of the 5 average
divisions. The top ½ of 1% will be awarded.
League Secretaries are also asked to submit their
leagues most improved bowler. Of the names
submitted, the bowler with the highest pin increase will be recognized as the Ohio Most Improved Female Bowler. The winner will receive
an award and State recognition.

First Time Delegates Reception

35 First Time Delegates attended a reception in their honor during Annual Meeting Weekend in Independence. State board members introduced themselves and stated a little bit about themselves.
A question and answer game was played which pitted the “Blue” team against the “Red” team. Questions
were asked regarding activities held by the Ohio USBC WBA and related clubs with either an “A” or “B” answer. New delegates then held up cards revealing their answers. Informative answers were provided by the
members of the state board. The game resulted in a tie, but more importantly, information was shared.
Our new delegates showed enthusiasm and asked intelligent questions during the question
and answer session. They provided suggestions that would assist future first time delegates.
Congratulations to all our First Time Delegates and we hope to see you next year.

Scholarship Fund

In 1992, The Ohio Women’s Bowling Association
Scholarship Fund was developed and instituted.
This fund provides scholarships to worthy female
bowlers who are continuing their education. Since
the inception, 21 women bowlers have received
funds totaling $83,000.
We wish to continue this funding for another 20
years, but with the current amount received in
pledges, this will be impossible. We ask that each
association includes a pledge to the Ohio USBC
WBA Scholarship fund in their budget next year. A
Silver Donor pledge from each association would
allow this project to continue.

The Ohio Association Managers Club met on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Embassy Suites in Independence, Normal business of the Club was conducted, with the membership approving several ByLaws amendments, and electing the following: Vice
President Mary Ellen Roll and Director Linda Poole.
Lori Gillen was honored with this year’s Gene Myers Award. Lori currently serves as the United
USBC WBA’s Association Manager.
Mary McClay, Ohio USBC WBA Association Manager spoke regarding Participation Points. She explained that the easiest 10 points for the Participation Certificates was to return the nominating letter
which is included in the August mailing to all associations. Invited guest Robin Marshall, USBC NE
Regional Director, spoke with the members regarding upcoming products from USBC.

Our 2014 selection for the Mary Jannetto Award is
active on her local board as well as at the state level
and devoted to both her local association as well as
the state. She is truly a worker, always willing to roll
up her sleeves and work to get a job or project done.
She is a promoter of bowling and bowlers, be it encouraging those she meets to join a bowling league
and become a certified member, taking awards to
various bowling centers, delivering tournament entries and meeting notices to the membership to promote activities, both local and state.
She has made items, baked goods and even purchased items to be given to bowlers who participate
in local tournaments, as a thank you for participating
in events.
She has participated in 30 State Tournaments, been a
National Delegate 16 years and participated in projects such as skits, posters, Fun Day, Golf Day, etc.
She is currently serving as director of her local board
and also a former President as well as chairman of
the Ohio USBC WBA Tellers Committee.

The United USBC WBA celebrates 50 years!
Encompassing three centers, with 325 members from Ohio, West Virginia
and Pennsylvania, United recently celebrated their 50th Annual Championship Tournament with special invited guests: Jean Tondola-Smith, Ohio
USBC WBA President (pictured below with United’s Board of Directors),
Terry Pugh, St. Clairsville, Ohio’s Council President, and Matt Van Fossen,
who performed the National Anthem.
The tournament was dedicated to the memory of former President, Louise
Boyd, who recently passed away.

The Buckeye 600 Bowling Club will hold its 37th Annual Singles Handicap
Tournament on June 21, 22, 28 & 29, 2014 at Coshocton Lanes in Coshocton,
OH. The District Champions Roll-off will be held Sunday, June 29, 2014 at
9:00 a.m.
The 600 and 700 Clubs will co-sponsor a Scotch Doubles Tournament on June 21 and
June 28. This tournament is open to all Ohio USBC WBA female members. It will also
be held at Coshocton Lanes. Advance entries are encouraged, but walk-ins will be accepted, based upon lane availability.

I am pleased to be able to share with you the results
of our Buckeye Bowling Writers activities in conjunction with the 89th Annual Ohio USBC WBA
Convention weekend.
At the Combined Clubs Award Program, our prestigious Mary Jannetto Award for Local Bowling
Promotion was presented to Sallye Condon, Greater
Toledo USBC.
The Friday evening Exchange Mart themed, "Bee a
Busy Bee" provided the delegates and guests with
plenty of interesting ideas and projects for their own
associations as they wound their way around the
ballroom.
The Ruth Heath-Trott Award for Excellence in
Bowling Involvement went to Robin Mantey, Greater Toledo USBC.
In our poster contest we had 20 entries. The winners
were:
 First Place: Ohio USBC WBA Scholarship
 Second Place – 3 way tie: Buckeye 5 - 500
Club, McCook Area USBC WBA and Springfield District USBC WBA
 Third Place – 3-way tie: Greater Toledo USBC,
International Museum and Hall of Fame, and
Local Association President's Club
The “People’s Choice” Category was won by
Springfield District USBC WBA.
During our Annual Meeting Saturday morning, Linda LeMay was re-elected Vice President. Deb
Paben was re-elected Director #3 and Valerie Eckman was elected Director #4. JoAnn Denzler who
had held the Director #4 position found it necessary,
due to family commitments, not to continue in that
position. JoAnn will be missed she was an asset to
our board.
Edie Smith, Springfield District USBC WBA, was
named the winner of our Leigh Betts Memorial Photography Award.
Ten Pin Tattler edited by Roberta Havholm of the
Springfield District USBC WBA again captured the
Rilla Yeater Publication Award.
Our Garrett Swartz Certificate of Recognition was
awarded to Daniel Martin, Ohio State USBC Bowling Association Manager.
As not enough entries for a contest were received for
our Website Contest, the board of directors will be
discussing whether to continue this category. We
will be discussing all of our contests and will keep
you apprised of our findings.
