HAVE FUN, BUT STAY SAFE IN THE WATER Oxford County Public Health offers tips for enjoying recreational waters without getting hurt. While swimming, boating & other recreational water activities are part of summer fun for people of all ages, they are not without risk. This is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about ways to prevent recreational water injuries. Put prevention into action. Drowning is known to be the 2nd leading cause of death among Canadian children under the age of 14, and it can happen quickly & silently. Keep your family safe by taking these precautions: • Supervision is critical: Keep children, particularly children under 6 years of age, within arms reach at all times. • Four-sided pool fencing is recommended to decrease the risk of easier access from the house to the pool area. If there is direct access from the house to a backyard pool the door leading from the house should be selfclosing with a self-closing lock, out of reach of children. • Wear a lifejacket when in a boat. Approximately 90% of recreational boaters who have drowned in Canada were not wearing lifejackets, or were wearing them improperly. • Be sober. Alcohol & water activities do not mix. Always be sober when near water or involved in water activities, including boating & fishing. • Learning to swim is recommended for safety. However, swimming by itself cannot prevent drowning. More than half of the Canadians who drowned in recreational boating incidents could swim. • Diving is the leading cause of sports-related spinal cord injuries. Always enter the water feet first when entering the water for the first time even if you are familiar with the body of water. • Before diving, think about how you’ll enter the water, and make wise choices before you go. It is important to always: Look & Think Ahead… Wear the Gear… Be Sober… Get Trained. DIRECT from IRELAND: CALADH NUA Tuesday, August 2, 8pm, Aeolian Hall, 795 Dundas St., London Like many of the great Irish traditional bands Caladh Nua simply formed as a result of some great musicians crossing paths, realizing a special connection and then wanting to share it. The ensemble comprises of five extremely talented musicians from 3 beautiful regions in Ireland, counties Carlow, Waterford and Kilkenny. Caladh is an old Irish word meaning "Harbour" or "Shelter place". Caladh Nua means a "New Harbour" or "New Shelter place". Caladh Nua could also refer to a new comfortable place where music and song sets a warm lovely atmosphere. With all this in mind, this is "Caladh Nua", the traditional Irish band. This very unique band was founded in 2009. The tasteful musical arrangements of Caladh Nua include traditional Irish dance music, traditional songs alongside some more recently composed pieces. Caladh Nua has a perfect balance between innovation and preservation of Ireland's wonderful music and song tradition. Its special repertoire and energy is guaranteed to capture an audience of any generation. The band is touring in support of their just released 2nd CD "Next Stop". “Solid traditional music with plenty of flair and lots of musical imagination” - Irish Music Magazine "What a terrific, young band. We are going to play a lot of them. We suspect they are going to be around a long time" - American Public Radio. www.caladhnua.com. TEENS FROM ACROSS NORTH AMERICA VOLUNTEERING IN LONDON London as been invaded by SERVE participants – teens giving a week of their summer to paint houses, serve food, & numerous other projects, in the name of Christian Service. The more than 40 teens & their adult leaders spend their week at such agencies as Habitat for Humanity, London Food Bank, Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre, LUSO, the South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre, Salthaven, My Sister's Place, Hospice of London. “SERVE is more than something you take part in, it has the potential to change lives beyond those who are volunteering,” says Roger Kuiken, Co-coordinator of the London SERVE project. “Our youth have learned a great deal about lending a hand to those who need help & the challenges many people face in their everyday lives, from poverty to disabilities to violence.” SERVE is a cooperative ministry of First Christian Reformed Church of London & Youth Unlimited, headquartered in Grand Rapids, MI. Each of the participants pays $375 US to participate in a SERVE project. The Youth Unlimited Missions Program is sponsoring more than 30 SERVE projects across the United States, Canada and other countries this summer, involving more than 2,000 teens. Youth Unlimited's mission is to help churches challenge youth to commit their lives to Jesus Christ and transform their world for Him. The volunteer efforts of the mission program last year saved local agencies an estimated $20,000 in manual labour costs, in addition to the materials which are often donated to the project worksites. “SERVE is designed for those who have a desire to help others and discover who God is through hands-on service,”. ERNIE GUY RECEIVES ROAD SAFETY AWARD The Oxford County Injury Prevention Team is pleased to announce that one of our members is the recipient of an Ontario Ministry of Transportation 2010 Road Safety Achievement Award. Ernie Guy was given the Road Safety Achievement – Volunteer Award. “Ernie Guy has been an active member of the Oxford County Injury Prevention Team since 1997. He is the treasurer & his tireless dedication to road safety has been an inspiration to the team. Ernie has been a constant presence promoting safety at community events, road safety expos for primary grade students, seat belt & drinking and driving assemblies at the high schools, construction zone safety seminars, ATV safety events and much more.” The Oxford County Injury Prevention Team produced an ATV safety video targeted to youth. With uncertainty as to whether sufficient funding would be acquired, Ernie’s tireless enthusiasm was instrumental in securing the financial supporters to help make the DVD happen. As a result, a copy of the DVD was sent to every school in Oxford County, 4H Clubs and all area ATV retailers.” “I can say I am personally thankful to have such a wonderful volunteer & active advocate for road safety,” said Oxford OPP Const. Stacey Culbert. “Ernie truly does care in getting the safety messages out there where they can be seen and heard.” We thank Ernie for all of his hard work to help educate and to promote safety in Oxford County. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, My going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, Not as I am now, but as I used to be. Because, I will remember you all, And look on with a smile, Understand, in your hearts, I’ve only gone to rest a while. As long as I have the love of each of you, I can live my life in the hearts of all of you. One of VON’s community support programs is “Home At Last” or HAL. HAL is a free program that identifies adults in local hospitals who are over 55 & are aging, frail or have special needs & require assistance to get home & settle-in following a hospital discharge. These clients could be living at home, at a retirement or long term care home, & have limited supports or a caregiver or family that is unavailable. The HAL program works with community partners to provide the various services that make up the HAL program ensuring a smooth transition from hospital to home. On a predetermined discharge day, a HAL attendant will meet the client at the hospital, escort them home and if required, assist with medical equipment, prescription and/or grocery pick up. They will ensure the client is settled safely & comfortably at home. HAL also includes a complimentary Meals on Wheels lunch & follows up with a call. There’s no fee for this HAL service. It is funded through the Southwest LHIN Aging at Home initiative. Contact Connie Milliken or Darlene Dooks at VON at 519-659-2273 or speak to your hospital CCAC Case Manager for info. HARRINGTON ANNUAL PORK BBQ The Harrington & Area Community Association's 11th Annual Pork BBQ is being held on Saturday, August 13th this year. There are several good reasons to attend! First is the site: The Harrington Pond is one of the nicest features of Harrington! Although owned by the UTRCA, the Association does the dayto-day upkeep, and uses this lovely, peaceful venue, along the edge of the pond as the site for the BBQ. The food is another great reason you will want to attend. The BBQ Pork Chops from Miedema Meats in Embro are superb, and the corn on the cob - locally grown and cooked in the husk over a wood fire - is the best - bar none! This is complimented by baked potatoes with all the trimmings, fresh veggies, and homemade desserts. The folks you will see there are another great part of the attraction- Harrington & Zorra residents are some the friendliest you are ever likely to meet. The reason for this event is an initiative spearheaded by the Harrington & Area Community Association: to raise funds to enable the restoration of the historic century-old Harrington Grist Mill. Area residents feel strongly that the Mill should be restored, preserved and celebrated as one of the important links with the rural roots of their area, and as a way to pay homage to the determination and ingenuity of their forefathers who first settled this area. A great deal of progress has been made to date on this restoration. You will have the opportunity to tour this museum quality facility on the day of the BBQ and see for yourself the progress to date. However, there is still much to be done before the Association's ultimate goal can be reached - that the the Mill be fully operational, and ideally powered by the water that flows over the dam. Your support will be greatly appreciated, and will also be instrumental in helping persuade the UTRCA that this pond should be preserved for the continued enjoyment of all. Please plan to attend! Tickets are $14 for Adults, $7 for kids 6-12, under 6 free. Call 475-4097, 475-0497, or email ourharringtonhome@live.ca. MAKE YOUR COFFEE COUNT! Registration is held at the Thamesford Arena from 6:30-8pm on August 9. We offer public swims every day from 2-4pm, evening swims, Aqua fit, adult & private lessons, length swims, pool rentals, a competitive swim team & recreational synchro team. Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross will run August 112 from 4-6pm. Tim Hortons has sponsored a free swim for the public; which will be held on August 7; 2-4pm. We thank them for their generosity. We will be hosting “Dog Days of Summer” on Aug 26 from 4-5pm, with the cost being $2 per owner + dog. If you have any questions, or would like more info, please contact Sinéad Drum, Pool Supervisor, at 519-285-3063. We look forward to seeing everyone at the pool for a safe & enjoyable summer! Dundas Street is looking much better thanks to the clean up & fencing at Mac’s, the beautiful hanging baskets, flower beds & boxes put up and looked after by Thamesford Business Association (watering is done by Maple Leaf-Cold Springs–big thank you!) and the gardens and sidewalk at the Library being repaired. The new park across from Tim Horton’s is looking good. Many thanks to all the Lions & community volunteers who work hard to give us all so much green space. The pool had a paint job as has the lobby & dressing rooms at the arena–soon it will be ice time! Remember this as we enjoy the heat of summer. Don’t forget the free swims at the pool. The rehabilitation of the river wells will be completed in September. Unfortunately until then, everyone is restricted to one day a week to ensure everyone is provided enough water for essential uses. The wells are constructed in gravel & have screens which build up with minerals and these minerals need to be removed or broken down to restore well capacity. It has been about 5 years since these wells were last rehabilitated. After rehabilitation, it is expected that the wells will come back to full capacity. There are 3 wells in Thamesford & while they will provide enough water for all the development anticipated in the County’s Official Plan, there will always be limits on how much is available for external use. This is not a situation limited to Thamesford–but the 1 day a week is a new temporary restriction. County staff will be patrolling & enforcing the restrictions. The County is reviewing its maintenance schedule so that in future both wells are not rehabilitated at the same time. Due to the dry, drought-like conditions, open burning will be restricted. Please check the Township’s website for more information. Thamesford Public School has been awarded full day kindergarten for Sept 2012. To accommodate this, an addition of 2 new kindergarten classrooms with washrooms, a new entrance, with an administration office and a new parking lot will be added to the west end. This construction is expected to start in Sept/Oct. Once that work is completed there will be a renovation to the library and the upper floor. More details on this later. Council welcomed the Beaty Room Wall of Recognition Committee as a delegation June 21. Many thanks go out to Tony Kelly, Beth & Jack O’Bright for all their work on identifying & providing information about the names recommended to Council. All names submitted were accepted with much gratitude to the Committee as well those being recognized. There will be an unveiling ceremony in the fall where those being added to the Wall will be celebrated. Council also passed a resolution to disband the Aggregate Advisory Committee & implement regular open houses, for example twice a year, where there will be industry & political representation and the public can talk directly to those involved. There had been at least 2 public call outs for volunteers but only one response–it was felt that the open houses may allow for more public participation. A Trillium Grant to refurbish the pool was submitted as per Council’s direction & approval. Word on that request has not yet been received. On June 28, Council held a Special Meeting to review and adopt a new Bylaw (replacing an old one) that Establishes & Regulates the Fire Department. The new Bylaw reflects changes that have been made over the years. It recognizes that there be a culture of safety, life long learning & harmonization of equipment and capabilities. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated fire department in Zorra Township. Council has been considering a Draft Interim Report generated from the Organizational & Operational Review of the Recreation Department. The final Report will be on Council’s agenda July 19. It will be sent to ZRAC and be posted on the Township’s Website. You may have noticed that there is an advertisement for a Recreation and Facilities Manager–this is a new position and will cover responsibility for all Municipal Facilities, maintenance and replacement wise. As the song goes, see you in September! Respectfully, Marie Keasey BUS TRIP TO THE CNE Hosted buy the Embro & Zorra Agricultural Society: Bus Trip to the CNE August 21, 2011. Candidates will be guests of the Fairboard on this bus trip & will have an opportunity to see Ambassadors from all over the province competing for CNE Ambassador. The Ambassador committee will be organizing several opportunities for potential competitors for the Embro & Zorra Ambassador competition to prepare for our own local event being held on September 16th. A PIECE OF NOSTALGIA BRINGS BACK MEMORIES AT THE AUCTION By Laura Green This isn’t just any coke cooler – it contains many stories true or exaggerated that were told around it as patrons would gather after a ball game or hockey game to Ray Billiards in Embro. Ray Lindsay owned & operated the business 1964-1987. He sponsored & managed many ball & hockey teams. The cooler was one of over 200 items that were auctioned at the Live and Silent Auction Fund Raising event held July 9, 2011 at the Embro Community Centre. Buyers had lots to choose from – cultural & sporting events tickets, sweet treats, hand crafts, farm supplies, gift certificates for meals and services, kid’s toys, antiques and golfing. 400 pasta meals were served during the silent auction – thanks to Donna Schurman & her crew of volunteers who endured the steaming hot kitchen. Countless hours of volunteer service by Embro & area residents went into this project to make it a success. The committee wishes to make special recognition to Brad Janssen who was the Master of Ceremonies and to Wayne & Steve from Ritchie Bros Auctioneers. The community event was held to raise funds to complete the renovation project at the Embro Community Centre that was started in 2010. Building Committee/Fund Raising committee chair Gord MacKay would like to thank businesses & individuals for their generous donations to the successful event. Special thanks to the buyers too! Civic Corner Civic Corner appears monthly in the Village Voice and will keep Township residents informed about upcoming meetings, notices & announcements and other important information. Please feel free to contact us with any comments or suggestions. The Township would like to thank JC Graphics for providing a venue for this valuable community service. UPCOMING MEETINGS SUMMER MEETING SCHEDULE: Fire Department The Fire Department would like to inform residents of the regulations for open air burning. To conduct open air burning, a permit is required. By-law 25-08 and the permit forms are available on the Township of Zorra website. The District Chiefs issue permits. One exemption to the requirement to obtain a permit is a recreational fire. One of the regulations that apply to recreational burning is the requirement that only commercially produced charcoal, briquettes or clean, dry seasoned wood may be burned. Further, recreational burning is restricted in size to 61cm x 61cm with flames not to exceed 61cm (2’x2’x2’). Open air burning may only take place between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and midnight. NOTICES & ANNOUNCEMENTS: Important: During the summer months, when extreme temperatures arise and there is significant lack of rain fall, it is often prudent to issue a ban on all open air burning, to suspend valid burn permits and to stop issuing burn permits until the fire danger situation decreases or there is rainfall sufficient enough to lower the threat. During these times be sure to listen to your local media and check on the township website for updates.
