THANK YOU, THANK YOU,
THANK YOU!!!
The family of Carol Bowers would like to
thank everyone for their support, generosity
and thoughtfulness; through a difficult time
that was overwhelming for us.
Carol, (mom), will be greatly missed at the
Edinburg Four Corners Diner, a business she
built and worked in for 15 years.
We, again, want to thank everyone who
reached out to us by phone, flowers, card,
donations or maybe just an encouraging word.
It meant a lot!
We would especially like to thank the
Edinburg Emergency Squad and the Edinburg
Fire Company which she enjoyed being
involved with.
We all loved and will surely miss her smile
and laughter. She will live on forever in our
hearts and memories.
Sincerely,
The Bowers’, Nichols’ and Ferguson Families

THANKS FOR YOUR
SUPPORT
As the owner of 2 growing businesses, a
grandfather, a husband, a member of several
organizations, and a Town Councilman, it became
clear that something had to give. There just aren’t
enough hours in the day to properly fulfill all of my
obligations.
So, after much thought and deliberation I have
decided not to seek re-election to a third term on the
Northampton Town Board. I would like to thank
everyone for their support and encouragement
during my tenure.
I found that the position was much harder and
more complicated than you might think. I also
learned that no matter how you vote, you will upset
someone. Owning 2 businesses in town made voting
on controversial issues that much harder because
my customers didn’t always see things my way.
It is not an easy job and careful thought
should be given before casting your vote for my
replacement, as well as for our next supervisor. Our
town needs leadership. We need elected officials
who have a track record of getting things done. We
need folks on the board who look forward to finding

ways to co-operate with other municipalities to cut
expenses and/or improve our community. We need
improved communication between board members,
department heads, and the community. We need
board members with a “can do” attitude instead of a
“can’t do” attitude.
As budgets tighten due to increasing costs and
shrinking revenue, who we elect will have a direct
effect on everything from our future property values
to the laid back life style we all enjoy here in the
Adirondacks. Our next Town Board must be proactive, not re-active.
I have had the privilege of working with all the
current candidates in some manner during my 20+
years as a Town resident and/or Board member.
Based on this experience I have decided to publically
endorse the following candidates:
James Groff for Town Supervisor, Darryl Roosa for
Councilman, Arthur Simmons for Councilman
These gentlemen have a proven track record of
getting things done and the experience required
to move our community forward in a positive and
productive manner..
Instead of basing your vote on hear-say and one
sided editorials, I encourage you to reach out to
all the candidates and ask them where they stand
on the issues that are important to you. This will
enable you to make an informed decision. I am
confident that after speaking with the candidates
that you will join me in supporting these gentlemen
in both the primary and in November.
Thanks Again to Everyone

The Sacandaga Valley Arts Network (SVAN) is
extremely pleased to announce its final concert of
the summer featuring celebrated American violin
virtuoso Elizabeth Pitcairn and one of the world’s
most legendary instruments, the Red Mendelssohn
Stradivarius of 1720, said to have inspired the
Academy Award-winning film, The Red Violin.
Ms. Pitcairn is the President, CEO and Artistic
Director of the Luzerne Music Center. She will be

The concert will be held on Tuesday August 20
at 7PM at the Mayfield Presbyterian Church, 22 N.
Main St. in Mayfield. Tickets are priced at $12 ($10
for SVAN members) and children of school age will
be admitted FREE with an adult. Tickets will be
available for purchase on the SVAN website and held
in Will Call. Tickets may also be available at the

advance since space is limited and demand is high.
Parking will be on site with overflow parking in the
adjacent village lot next to the church.
Born in bucolic Bucks County, Pennsylvania in
1973, Ms. Pitcairn comes from a musical family: her
mother is a Juilliard-trained cellist and her father
studied opera. She began playing the violin at age
three and made her debut performing with orchestra
at age 14. Her path led her to Los Angeles to study
with preeminent violin professor Robert Lipsett
at the University of Southern California Thornton
School of Music. Ms. Pitcairn is passionate about
youth and education and on her tours, she makes
time for school visits and gives university master

Why should I be concerned about protecting
the real estate tax policy that the Senate Finance
Committee wants to reform?
Tax reform is underway on Capitol Hill. The
Senate has adopted a “Blank Slate” approach
that initially eliminates every provision in the tax
code, including those that encourage real estate
ownership and investment.
A “blank slate” means that as a starting point,
all tax expenditures (including tax deductions such
as the mortgage interest deduction, tax exemptions
such as the capital gains exemption on the sale
of a primary residence, and tax credits such as
energy efficiency tax credits) will be removed from
the tax code. Senators will have to request tax
expenditures be added to the reform legislation.
Using the “blank slate” approach allows the Senate
Finance Committee to highlight just how much tax
rates could be reduced by eliminating all the tax
expenditures. Adding any tax expenditures back
into the code would ratchet the rates up.
Our nation’s real estate markets are finally
on the road to recovery. One of the surest ways
to halt this recovery is to create uncertainty
about whether the current tax treatment will be
eliminated or impaired for real estate owners and
investors.
As a REALTOR, I can tell you that the tax
treatment of real estate, whether residential,
commercial, or investment property, is an
important consideration for my clients. I would
urge you to write or call your local Senator or
Congress member and express to “Do No Harm”
and encourage the leaders of the Senate Finance
Committee to retain the current tax provisions
that are vital to real estate and our tax system.

August 2013
Initial balloting is positive for the candidates.
All GSLA members should cast their ballot and if
willing, toss their hat in the ring for next year!
Water Quality on the Great Sacandaga
A Report from the
Great Sacandaga
Lake Association
by Peter M. Byron, President
Last month, we reported on the GSLA’s FREE
Boater Safety classes which are provided in the
lake community. We completed two sessions was
successful on the examination! Almost 40 newly
certified boaters have joined their friends on the
lake as a result.
The GSLA and NAV-ED Services Group which
provides the courses for FREE have scheduled the
final FREE boater safety class at the end of July.
This time the class registration was closed ahead
of time because of the overwhelming response. We
will have to gauge membership interest for another
class. The class is one of the benefits of GSLA
membership.
Breaking News: The New York State
Legislature approved a new amendment to the
boater safety requirements at the end of the
last session. The new law which is awaiting the
Governor’s signature would require everyone
born after May 1, 1996 to have a boater safety
certificate to operate a mechanically propelled
vessel. The bill is A03471A in the Assembly and
S01639-A in the Senate and can be read with
supporting information on the State Assembly site.
GSLA Board Update
Last month, I reported that the GSLA is
conducting balloting for Board positions. The
Board election is conducted once a year. The
current candidates have attended Board meetings
and are anxious to be chosen through the election
process. Remember, individual club members
who are GSLA members have until the end of
the month to submit their ballot either by mail or
electronically through www.gsla.org
A few years ago there were some issues
upstream of the Great Sacandaga which brought
quite a bit of suspicious water and debris into
the lake. At that time, the GSLA discovered that
there was no consistent testing of water quality
on the lake. As a result of this discovery, the
GSLA contacted RPI-backed Darrin Freshwater
Institute on Lake George to initiate water quality
testing during the summer months and provide
an environmental tripwire for us, if the samples
exceeded State safe recreation levels. We are
happy to report that the first 2013 sampling was
conducted on July 15, 2013. The results will
be available on the www.gsla.org and hopefully
will be the topic of a presentation by the lead
researcher at our August 2013 membership
meeting.
Warnings and General News Updates
During one of our GSLA Board meetings a few
years ago, one of the GSLA members complained
that the GSLA was not taking advantage of
e-bursts! Although, the Board had discussed the
topic because it saves quite a bit on postage costs,
nothing had been done until we received that
nudge. At this point, the GSLA uses our GSLA
e-message system to alert the lake community
of high water, low water and all the water in
between! We also use the system to communicate
on news of interest from the Hudson River-Black
River Regulating District and other sources. All
GSLA members are eligible for this FREE service.
If you are a member and you are not receiving the
GSLA e-message, send us your address through
www.gsla.org
GSLA Membership Meeting
The annual membership meeting will be held
in August. Refreshments will be served and
presentations will be made by the GSLA Board,
the Regulating District, the Sacandaga Protection
Committee and as mentioned earlier, hopefully the
Darrin Freshwater Institute. We will share the
details on www.gsla.org. If you are not a member,
this might be the time to take a look at the GSLA
by attending the meeting. Membership is open to
anyone who enjoys living or recreating in the lake
community.

Owning a pool can be a wonderful thing,
providing the convenience of quick and cool dips
on a hot summer day, a useful exercise option, and
a setting for family fun. But pool ownership also
provides responsibility, so taking steps to keep
yourself, your family and your guests safe are
absolutely necessary.
For all the enjoyment a pool offers, there are
also dangers; 137 children under age 15 drowned
in pools or spas between Memorial Day and Labor
Day last year, according to the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission. An additional 168
children required emergency response for what
where characterized as near-fatal incidents during
that same time period.
“As easily as a pool can be a setting for a
perfect summer day, it can be a setting for an
unforgettable accident,” said Allstate spokesperson
in New York Jaclyn Darrohn. “Pool owners need to

think about safety, about security, about liability
and about local ordinances, and take steps in each
of these areas. It’s not enough to wait for a warm
day, fill the pool with water, and have a great
afternoon, because a pool is a pool around the
clock, and every pool has its dangers.”
A first practice would be to try and keep
everyone as safe as possible when they are using
the pool. Steps would include:
• Make sure everyone in the household knows
how to swim, has a basic knowledge of pool safety
and knows the pool rules. CPR training is also
advisable.
• Never leave toys or floats in the pool when it’s
not in use.
• Keep life saving gear such as a first aid kit,
reaching poles and buoys readily available and in
proper working condition.
• Children should always be supervised while in
the pool.
• Keep children away from filters and devices with
suction force that may cause injury or drowning.
Almost as important is keeping people safe

when they are not using the pool. Steps
that help in that task include:
• Enclose the pool with a fence that
stands at least four feet high and has a
self-closing and self-latching gate. Avoid
fences with vertical bars spaced more
than four inches apart and chain-link
fences that are easy to climb.
• Keep patio furniture away from the
fence so people can’t use it to boost
themselves over the fence.
• Install and use a lockable safety cover
on your pool or spa.
• Consider using a surface wave or
underwater alarm
Not to be overlooked are the dangers
of small inflatable pools. While larger
backyard pools get covers, fences and
locked gates, small inflatable pools
have no barriers to keep inquisitive
toddlers away. A child can drown even
in shallow water in the time it takes to
grab a towel from indoors. Tips to be
followed when using inflatable pools
include:
• Supervise infants and toddlers,
always being within touching distance.
• Know CPR. Be prepared to rescue
a child with life saving techniques if
necessary.
• Drain the water and deflate the pool
when it is not in use
• Follow the layers of protection rule
with large inflatable pools. Set up as
many barriers as possible to make it
difficult for a child to get to the pool
such as door alarms, fencing, safety

covers and locks.
For those who own or are considering installing
a pool, it’s important to understand the local
regulations relating to a pool. A pool is considered
an “attractive nuisance,” in other words, too
tempting to resist, especially to children. Your
kids may sneak out the patio door when you’re not
looking, or neighborhood kids may trespass to get
to the pool when you’re out of town.
These are the types of scenarios that the safety
requirements of towns and insurance companies
typically address. Some cities may require all
residential swimming pools to have a barrier
around them. Other factors like diving boards,
visibility from the street and whether the pool
is in-ground may affect the insurability of the
swimming pool.
While most homeowners policies include a
minimum of $100,000 of liability protection, you
may want to consider increasing the amount
to $300,000 or $500,000. In addition, you may
consider purchasing an umbrella liability policy,
which typically costs about $300-$500 annually
depending on
the state, the
characteristics and
the coverage, and
can give you $1
million in liability
protection above
what you already
have on your home.

2013-2014 Northville Rotary Year
The Rotary year began July 1 by ushering
in a new president and Board of Directors in
every club and district. The accomplishments of
the past year were celebrated and goals for the
upcoming year were discussed. Past President
Barbara Sperry passed the gavel and bell to
Janet Meuwissen who will preside over the club
for the next year. We thanked Barbara for her
leadership and enthusiasm in leading the club
through meetings each week, and many successful
fundraisers . Members of the new Board include
Joan Kenyon, Treasurer, Susan Owens, Secretary,
Board Members Dan Casey and Chas Owens, and
President-Elect Jeff Meuwissen.

recognizing a Community Member of the Year are
two of the last official actions of President Barbara
Sperry at our changeover dinner. This year we
congratulated Erica Schermerhorn and Abigail
Moore as they prepare to further their education.
They each received an award of $500 for their
scholarship, leadership and community service;
they also spoke to the club about their future
plans.
This year’s Community Service Award was
given to Tom and Lisa Wood, owners of The
Timeless Tavern since 2004. This energetic couple
has been an active, moving force for improving the
Northville community. It is well known though
quietly done, that this caring couple has given
meals to many people who were experiencing hard
times. The Timeless Tavern believes in hiring
high school students, but to quote Lisa “only if
they keep up their grades.” Above
all, Lisa and Tom model what
they preach. They have donated
entire benefits for several events
including the ambulance and fire
department. Tom coaches Little
League and ends the season
each year with a dinner at the
restaurant. Thank you Tom and
Lisa for all you have done for the
Northville community.
Our new president, Janet
Meuwissen, had little time to
adjust to the new job. Our first
major fund raising event was
the Woodworking and Fine Arts
Weekend on July19-21. It takes an
entire year to prepare for...so our
work is already beginning on the
show scheduled for July 18-20 next
year! Rotary meets each Thursday
5:30 at the Sport Island Pub except
in the summer when we meet
at members’ homes. Check with

meeting and please join us!

For many folks, Edinburg is a great place to
slow down and enjoy the seasonal beauty. Many
hike, swim, visit with friends and neighbors, and
take in the local culture. Like many other areas in
the Valley, this is not just a destination, but home
as well. A home that we want to take care of and
protect, enjoy and celebrate, love and leave for the
future.
The future of Edinburg is boundless. We know
this because we can look back at our history and
see that the Native Americans found much to eat

and enjoy here. We learn that the first settlers
overcame many obstacles and created vibrant and
lush communities in Edinburg. That technology and
local resources were used under great adversity to
provide for the people of Edinburg. That when faced
with change, either by war, disease, or devastation,
Edinburg adapted and endured.
We are respectful of those that came before us,
proud of those that are present, and privileged to help

“Are we there yet?” As a child, it never even
occurred to me to ask that question of my parents.
Of course we weren’t “there yet.” If we were, we
would have stopped traveling and be somewhere
different. But this is not the case with most
children, who feel compelled to ask every 15
minutes, “Are we there yet?”
Even though my hair is silently turning white
as I try to answer each, “Are we there yet?” from
my own children with humor and non-descript
clues, I have come to be pleased with my children’s
curious nature. They ask everything from the
usual, “Why is the sky blue?” to the complicated
“What is cell division?” But for some questions,
the answers are not easily found.
When I was younger I had many questions
about my identity. But I chose to look back,
instead of forward, for my answers. As a college
student, I searched for answers in my family
history that would help me construct my future.
Then, the tide changed. As an adult, I no longer
wanted to carry the weight of my ancestors, but
be cautiously aware of their strengths feeding my
own. Slowly, I figured out that one can be linked
to family without being defined by family. Now,
my children are becoming curious of their family
connections at a much younger age than I. Super.
Now my hair is turning whiter and I am wondering
why we cultivated such curious minds.
I cannot answer many of their questions
because the information is not easily attainable.
But for some branches of our family that have
lived in the United States for generations, we have

made interesting discoveries. The process of doing
web research, cemetery crawls, and talking to folks
has been really fun. We cannot devote as much
time as we would like to our new “detective work,”
but this project is easy to stop and start whenever
we need to.
We have found that there has been at least
one branch of the family living in the Valley for
over 220 years! That is astounding. We know how
wonderful it is to raise a family in the Valley, but
it is nice to share that purpose with so many other
generations. Discovering and creating family
bonds, even with those that are no longer with
us, is not just for the more mature members of
our society, but for the young as well, who need to
know that they belong.
Share your knowledge of your family history
with each other. And if you don’t know of any,
make the journey of discovery the bond that joins
everyone together. So when they ask the less
complicated, “Are we there yet?” and you can feel
the white hairs on the back of your neck stand up
at the thought of answering another question, you
can be thankful in its simplicity.
Wherever life takes you, take a little bit of the
Valley with you.

DID YOU KNOW
THAT—
by Town of Edinburg Historian,
Priscilla L. Edwards
The first Federal Census in our country was
taken in 1790 and every ten years thereafter. In
1845 a town census in each county was taken
every five years until 1880 after which they were
taken every ten years. These early census records-especially the ones 1845-1875--for the town of
Edinburgh give us a very concise agricultural report.
Since women of a household did not have a Price
Chopper, Hannaford or Tops to depend upon, almost
everyone lived on a farm for their own subsistence.
Many of the larger farms were located on the river
flats where the land was more fertile--remember, this
was many years before the Sacandaga Reservoir.
Some of the early farmers were actually
professionals in other fields of employment. One of
largest and wealthiest farms in Edinburgh in 1865
was owned by Dr. Eleazer Kies, MD who “doctored”
the community for many years. Without a doubt Dr.
Kies had several hired hands to tend his farming
chores.

The 1865 census was taken during the month of
June and early July, just a couple of months after the
end of the Civil War. Most of the agricultural counts
were taken from the previous year--1864, since crops
weren’t harvested yet in June of 1865.
The 1865 census listed a town population of 1,357
people with 224 farming households. Sizes of farms
ran from a few acres to hundreds of acres. There
were 23,476 acres of improved farmland and 12,822
of unimproved--some of this probably being forest
and wood lots. The cash value of all farms was
$294,400 with $79,044 worth of livestock. Tools and
implement values totaled $17,709.
There were 1,731 ½ acres plowed in 1864 and 1,782
½ acres in 1865. Men returning from war may have
accounted for the 1865 increase. 14 acres lay fallow
in 1864 but none in ’65. This means that the land
was plowed but not planted. This is often done to
give the land a rest.
There were 7,437 acres of pasture land in ’64 and
only 7,358 acres in ’65. The record shows Edinburgh
suffered drought conditions in 1864 which may have
decreased the pasture acreage in ’65. 4,658 acres of
meadow in ’64 gave a hay harvest of 3,539 tons.

Six types of grain were grown in 19th century
Edinburgh. Spring wheat was sown on
18 ½ acres in 1864 with a yield of 146 bushels of
grain. Our short Adirondack growing season does
not encourage the growth of wheat crops.
The biggest grain crop was oats. 469 ½ acres
were sown with seed in ‘64 with a harvest of 6,193
½ bushels. The drought badly affected the oat and
hay crops cutting their production by app. one-half
compared to the previous four years.
13 ½ acres of winter rye were sown in ‘64;
producing 62 bushels. Winter rye is often used as
green manure or fertilizer to enrich the soil.
The 1864 crop of barley sown over 14 acres
produced 154 bu. of grain.
The second largest grain crop was buckwheat.

The ‘64 crop sown on 403 ½ acres produced 5,472 ½
bu. One wonders how many pounds of buckwheat
flour went into all the pancakes baked in those
224 farmhouse kitchens every morning for a year-not to mention the ones baked in the logging camp
kitchens?
The 403 ¾ acres of Indian corn produced 10,118
bu. in 1864. A ½ acre was planted for fodder--animal
food. We don’t know if this Indian corn was yellow or
multi-colored. History books do tell us that the early
explorers to our eastern seaboard in the 1500’s found
the Native Americans growing and eating corn such
as we hang on our doors at Halloween. The early
settlers to our country in the 1600’s also grew and
ate this same corn. Somewhere along the way science
perfected the yellow ear and the colored corn was
used strictly as field corn or fodder and decorating
our homes in the fall.
Edinburgh farmers planted 225 acres to potatoes in
‘64, yielding 24,409 bu. Potatoes were a large staple
in each family’s diet.
Peas are not big producers. It takes a lot of acreage
for big production rather it be 1864 or 2013. The
1864 harvest yielded 57 bushels on 2 acres sown. 19
acres were planted with beans in ‘64. 262 bushels
were picked. These beans were probably for baking-not the string variety. The carrot crop of ‘64 covered
3 2/3 acres and yielded 1,105 ½ bushels. That’s a lot
of stew.

What To Do With
Flooded Gardens
Compiled by Cornell
Cooperative Extension
If flood waters have covered a garden, some
produce will be unsafe to eat. The safety of
unharvested fruits and vegetables will depend on
1) kind of produce, 2) maturity of produce at the
time of flooding, 3) time of year flooding occurred,
4) severity of flooding (depth of water and silt),
August 2013
5) duration of flooding, 6) bacterial content of
floodwater and 7) the likelihood of contamination
from sewage or other bacterial contaminants.
In general, fruits and vegetables which were
immature at the time of flooding should be safe to
eat by the time they are ready to harvest. Unless
flooding was light and there is no danger of
bacterial contamination from floodwater, do not use
fruits and vegetables that were ready for harvest at
the time of flooding.
The University of Florida Cooperative Extension
Service indicates that leafy vegetables such as
lettuce, cabbage, mustard kale, collards, spinach,
Swiss chard, celery, and fleshy vegetables and
berry fruits such as tomatoes, summer squash,
strawberries and peppers are highly susceptible
to bacterial contamination. Silt and other
contaminants may be imbedded in the leaves,
petioles, stems or other natural openings of fleshy
structures and can be difficult to remove. Following flooding, any leafy greens that are
eaten fresh, such as lettuce or cabbage, should be
destroyed. They are at risk of contamination for
ninety days following a flood. Leafy greens that
will be cooked, such as spinach, should be cut back
completely and allowed to re-grow before using.

Cook them thoroughly before using.
Remove the blossom or set fruit from strawberry
plants exposed to floodwaters. Any strawberries
from these plants that are consumed within
the next ninety days should be cooked before
consuming.
Root crops should be peeled and cooked
thoroughly.
For peas, beans, squash, or tomatoes, if their
fruit is present during flooding, the fruit should
be picked and discarded. Any of these vegetables
that contact the ground during the three months
following the flood should be either discarded
or peeled and thoroughly cooked. Underground
vegetables such as carrots and potatoes should also
be peeled and thoroughly cooked. Thoroughly wash
produce with thick outer rinds, such as melons and
squash, before cutting open.
Always wash fresh fruits and vegetables before
eating; wash with running water and use friction. South Dakota State University Cooperative
Extension states that the use of detergents or

chlorine bleach is not recommended as fruits
and vegetables are porous and will absorb these
chemicals.
Some sprays approved for use on fruits and
vegetables are available and may be helpful in
removing debris, dirt, and surface microorganisms.
If the garden produce was flooded, don’t attempt
to make an unsafe flooded garden product safe by
using a fruit and vegetable spray, chlorine bleach, or
other product.
Foodborne illness has been associated with
garden vegetables contaminated with floodwaters
containing pathogenic bacteria, parasites, and
viruses. The more common pathogens involved
in these outbreaks include E. coli 0157:H7,
Cryptosporidium parvum, Cyclospora, Giardia,
Campylobacter, and Hepatitis A. All of these
diseases make people very ill and in some instances
have long-term complications or may be fatal.
Gardeners should not attempt to make an unsafe,
flooded garden product safe by using chlorine bleach
or a similar product. The level of contamination on a
flooded garden can be at dangerous levels.
Gardeners should keep in mind that although

pathogens will eventually die out, pathogens can
remain present in the soil for several months. If the
homeowner knows the area was contaminated with
feedlot or septic overflow, it is recommended that
no produce be used from the garden for ninety days.
Soil or produce samples can also be submitted to a
commercial testing laboratory to verify the presence
or absence of pathogens.
Gardeners should use good personal-hygiene
practices. Wash hands before and after gardening.
Leave garden shoes at the door, and change clothing
after working in a flooded garden. Avoid direct
contact with flood waters, including the soil, as
much as possible. Young children can be at a high
risk for some foodborne illnesses. If a garden plot
has been flooded, consider either not having young
children in the garden with you or take precautions
to utilize good personal hygienic practices.
Soil from gardens, including unplanted gardens,
that were recently flooded may not be safe for
fruit and vegetables production. Floodwaters may
contain contaminants such as agricultural or other
chemicals, as well as disease-causing organisms
from fresh manure, septic systems, and even
lagoons.

PONDEROSA PINES RESORT
on Great Sacandaga Lake
The United Presbyterian
Church of Northville
by Barbara Reffitt
Historic Batchellerville Presbyterian Church
As you probably noticed with our summer
schedule, the Northville Presbyterian Church is
holding Sunday morning services at the historic
Batchellerville church. This is a wonderful old
church built in 1867.
After the Great Sacandaga Lake reservoir
was built in 1930, the church was moved from its
previous location near the Sacandaga River to its
current site in the Town of Edinburg. Moving the
church was a huge and difficult decision involving
an enormous amount of work; so the parishioners
did not make the final decision to move the church
until 1931, after the dam gates were closed and the
reservoir slowly began to fill. Before the church was
moved, it had to be cut into two unequal portions.
The larger portion was moved up the hill while
the smaller portion of the church, carriage house
and other outbuildings were left to history and the

waters of the lake.
In the North Country during the 1930’s, most
large buildings were moved by a process of chopping
down large uniform trees, removing the limbs,
jacking up the building to put the logs under the
structure, using animals and men to pull and roll
the building up the hill. Every few yards the logs
would have to be repositioned to roll the building up
what I’m sure seemed like a gigantic mountain!
The church is a rectangular, timber framed
structure in Greek revival style, featuring stained
glass windows and a two stage, louvered belfry
(or bell tower) topped by a bell cast metal roof.
Historically, bell metal is made of the finest tonal
quality, which was a bronze, consisting of twentyfive percentage tin. The acoustics in the church
are exceptional and provide an amazing vessel to
send praise and thanks to God. The church had
also been the site for a decade of beautiful classical
concert performances.
On August 13, 1959, thanks to the wisdom of
the parishioners of both the Batchellerville and
Northville churches, they entered into a written
agreement to be incorporated under the name

of Northville United Presbyterian Church. The
Albany Presbytery approved the incorporation of
the two churches on September 15, 1959. On June
16, 2000, the Batchellerville Presbyterian church
was approved to be listed as a historic building on
the National Register of Historic Places.
If you would like to experience worship in a
lovely old mid-1800’s historical church we welcome
you to attend at 9am each Sunday until September
1. The choir meets early at 8:15 to warm up their
beautiful voices. This worship service strives to be
lighthearted, warm, spiritual, and holy. Following
the worship service you are welcome to join us
for an inviting gathering of fellowship and light
beverages in the Narthex.
On Sunday evenings, Pastor Kirianne Riehl also
holds a smaller, more contemplative service, which
includes communion, at the Northville church
beginning at 7PM.
The Northville Presbyterian Church
congregation warmly welcomes our summer guests
and visitors.
Please come and worship with us at either or

TIPS FOR STAYING FIT ON VACATION
‘ Travel can be broadening’ in more than one
way, unfortunately. To help avoid returning
home less physically fit with extra pounds around
your waistline, here are some important tips to
remember from HealthLink’s Community Health
Educator, Carol Tomlinson R.N. B.S.
1) It’s easier to stay at your current weight and
fitness level than it is to try to get back in shape
and lose
extra weight.
2) The temptation to overeat or to eat high-fat

foods can be avoided with simple guidelines such
as:
Ask about portion size…if it’s more than you
normally eat, request that a portion of the meal be
packaged for takeout before you are served.
If your meal comes with a mound of french fries,
cheese or other high-fat foods, don’t be afraid to
request a healthier substitute.
Snack on fruits and vegetables instead of
potato chips and candy.
Ask that meat dishes be lean and welltrimmed.
To save calories, order a cup of soup instead of
a bowl.
Make the appetizer the main course or split the
main course between 2 people.
Don’t forget you still need 5 servings of fruits
and vegetables. Try ordering vegetable pizza,
pasta or try a veggie-wrap. You might even ask
that the vegetable portion be doubled and the meat
portion be cut in half.
Quench your thirst during the day with water.
3) Help control your weight and muscle tone
with 30 minutes of physical activity every day.
Some ideas for including exercise in your trip are:
Start your day with a 30 minute walk to see the
sights. You will enjoy the health benefits and it
will give you time to relax and plan for the day.
Walking tours are a good alternative and will let
you experience more of the local culture than if you
were riding in a bus or car.
Plan to take short breaks during the day. Instead
of sitting in a rest area, take a brief walk before
getting back into the car or bus.

REMEMBER…vacations should
be fun not work! Don’t push
yourself to do more than you can
accomplish comfortably in a day.
If you become overtired, it will
tempt you to eat more and be less
physically active.

Summers go by too fast!
Yes, summers fly by and this one is the same as the
ones in years past! Kids sleep in, go to camp, swim and
go on vacation with their families, whether it is camping
at a local campground, visiting Grandma & Grandpa or
driving across our big country for a special vacation to
remember. Before you know it, those school bells will be
ringing once again!
Summers are like life, don’t you think? Life goes
faster than we could ever imagine! One day you’re in
school hanging out with your friends and studying for
a test, then, you’re out making money at your first job,
getting married and starting your own family, and
the next thing you know you’re attending your child’s
graduation or wedding and holding a grandbaby! The
Bible tells us that life is like a vapor. James 4:14 says,
“What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a
little time and then vanishes.” 1 Peter says in verse 24
“All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the
flowers of the field; the grass
withers and the flowers fall.”
This might sound depressing
but what it’s really showing
is the shortness of life - the
importance of living your life
to the fullest and making wise
decisions. We need to remember
Hydraulic Lifts
that there is a special purpose
for each of our lives. And, that
after life we face our Maker and
eternity!
Floating Docks
If you’re never read the
book, The Purpose Driven Life,
I highly recommend it. It really
puts this all into perspective.
Life is not meaningless, but
has a purpose – that purpose is
that we glorify our Maker and
Cantilever Lifts
fulfill the specific purpose He
has for each of us. God loved
us so much that He gave His
own son, Jesus, for us on the
cross. He wants us to accept
this free gift of forgiveness, to
love & trust Him and fulfill our
purpose in this world. Then
All Terrain Staircases
there are the rewards that will

last for eternity. WOW! Isn’t that mind-boggling? First
he loves us so much that He offers us free salvation and
then He promises us an eternity with Him, free from all
sin and the worries of this life, if we love and follow Him!
If you’ve never read Psalm 139, read it today. It’s one of
my favorites! This Psalm talks about how God knows our
every thought, and that we cannot hide from God, how
He made us so wonderfully, how our days are numbered,
and how completely magnificent God really is. He lets us
express ourselves, share our frustrations, and wants us
to ask Him to search our hearts! And, best of all He leads
us in the way everlasting. God loves us so very much!
I mentioned in last month’s church article that one
of our college kids, Kenny Carman, was going to be
preaching at some of our Sunday evening services this
summer. Well, he preached his first sermon for us a
couple of weeks ago and he did an excellent job! Keep up
the good work Kenny! He’ll be returning this fall to Davis
College in Binghamton to continue his preparation for
the ministry. Tom Dugan, another one of our local young
men, will also be preaching this summer. These men
desire to serve God and are a real blessing to our church
family.
We as a church family were blessed recently, with
a baptism at a beach on Great Sacandaga Lake, right
before one of those big thunderstorms hit. Seven people
said “YES” - to following Jesus and wanted to show
the world this fact through being baptized. It was a
great occasion with many people supporting them by
witnessing the event. And then, God painted a beautiful
double rainbow for us all to see on our way home so we
could praise Him even more!
VBX was a success, as usual. Schenectady City
Mission was the mission emphasis this year and the kids
did a great job bringing in their pennies to help them out
with this vital local ministry. We hope the VBX kids also
came to love and accept the Lord and will follow Him
with their whole heart. We want to thank our director,
Molly Whittaker, and her staff who do an awesome job
leading our VBX year after year.
Our Associate Pastor, George Hopper, will be
travelling to Belarus in September to speak at their
Pastors Conference. George has been there several times
and the students and pastors in Belarus appreciate his
ministry and gift of preaching. Say a little prayer for
Page 69
Pastor George as he goes and shares with these folks
across the ocean.
Northville Baptist Church is located at 111 N. First
St. Northville. Stop by and say hi to Pastor Rick and
Pastor George and our friendly church staff. The church
doors are often open all day. Be sure to check out our
website, (baptistchurchofnorthville.org). We preach
Christ, and Christ crucified – the free gift of salvation as
presented in God’s Word.
If you visit our church, please introduce yourself to
me at the front door where I greet people along with my
husband. Let me know that you read about our church
in the Edinburg Newsletter. I always pray that these
articles will be encouraging and help people to follow
Jesus.

by Mr. R. W. Teetz,
Superintendent
Edinburg Family and Friends,
Our beautiful hot summer has finally arrived,
even if it is filled with humidity. I hope that
everyone is enjoying the summer season. I trust
that all of the students are keeping up their skills
by doing some simple tasks; reading, a few math
problems, and some writing every day! Most
importantly, though, make sure that all children
are spending time outside enjoying the sun and
getting some physical activity. Limit t.v. and video
game time!
The office staff has been busy closing out the
year with financial statements, ordering classroom
materials and making out new schedules. The
maintenance staff is working very hard to ensure
that our school is sparkling clean for opening day

An Eagle Eye on Resource
Room
by Ms. Schedlbauer
Happy summer everyone! We have certainly
had a busy year here at Edinburg Common School.
I can’t believe it is already August. Summer SEEP
and SAIL are coming to a close and boy have we
been busy! We are all having fun practicing our
reading, writing, and math skills. We have been
writing about our favorite place, using a lot of
description. The boys and girls are also reading
Brian’s Hunt by Gary Paulson, a book about a boy
who spends time in the wilderness. In math, we
have been working a lot with fractions. There is a
lot you can do at home as well to stay sharp during
these hot summer months.
One of the greatest activities you can do is
read! Whether it is reading a book to your child,
taking turns reading with your child, or having
your child read on their own. It is important to
keep up this good habit by reading a little each
day. Be sure to choose books that are not too
easy or too difficult for your child to read and
understand. The book needs to be just right (think
Goldilocks and the Three Bears).
Your child can also work on their writing skills
by keeping a diary or a journal. They can write
about a special day they have had, their family
and pets, and much more. Encourage them to
add as many details as possible about the topic
they choose. Children can even help write out
the grocery list before shopping. They can also
be given a letter and then go on a scavenger hunt
around the house looking for items that start with
the given letter to write down.
There are also ways to keep children’s math
skills sharp. Use a face clock instead of digital for
telling time and have your child help count any
loose change lying around the house. If you are
someone who enjoys baking, your child can even
help with adding ingredients by following a recipe.
This can serve a second purpose by teaching how
to follow step-by-step directions.
The possibilities are truly endless when it
comes to reading, writing, and math activities
at home. Whatever you choose, make it fun for
both you and your child. Enjoy the rest of your
summer!

never go again, if it was not for my commitment to this

and a well known jockey ( ok, not known to me) was
being honored. There was a lot of media on the premises
The Center staff/volunteers and the restaurant wait staff
were excellent. They saved the evening. I have nothing
good to say about the restaurant. It was dirty and
smelled of mold.
The event started at 6:30 and staff were just putting
out tables and chairs in the bar area. They were all
dirty and covered in cob webs and debris. They had one
waitress trying to clean them up as best as she could;
with people arriving dressed in beautiful expensive
clothes. Bill wore white dress shorts and a very nice
light colored shirt. I have been scrubbing and soaking
them to get the stains out but they will never be the
same again. The food was horrible and they ran out
within one hour. Bill had two cocktail pigs in a blanket
and I had two mini quiches. We were with friends who
came an hour into the party and when they got there
only chips, salsa and a stray vegetable were left. We
stayed for a few hours and moved on. When we did
go home, we had the taxi take us to McDonald’s drive
thru. I have since found out there is a new owner of this
restaurant but that does not excuse what happened that
night. At the end of the day we all had fun because in
life you learn make the most out of every situation and
we were with good friends. Most importantly we were
there to support a good cause.
Thank you to all of you who supported the
Sacandaga Protection Committee in July. The barbecue
was fun and we hope to have it again next year. We
are planning the Red Neck Cocktail party in October.
Tickets will go on the sale in early August. For those
of you who have never come before, this party is a lot of
fun. You get to dress redneck and eat Sport Island Pub’s
“redneck style” food which is always awesome. We just
ordered redneck goblets for your drinking pleasure and
can not wait to sell them. Make sure to write Thursday
October 17 on your calendar. We are hoping to sell
enough tickets this year to fill the restaurant upstairs
and down.
Don’t forget about the Dam Tie Up August 10 and
Sand Island on Sept 7. We may live in the country
but we know how to play like the big boys. The Great
Sacandaga Lake...great people, great views, great year
round activities, great restaurants and entertainment.
Things are always GREAT on the GREAT SACANDAGA
LAKE !
P.S. We just ate lunch with Jeremy , Sandra and the
grandchildren at Key Largo Café on Cty Rt. 110. It is a
delightful little spot serving Caribbean style food. We
had Po’Boys, shrimp tacos, jerked chicken sandwich and
panini’s. Yum yum, stop in and enjoy!

Did You Know
God gave us a wonderful light show last night. I
am sure everyone on the lake had an awesome view.
We were tired after a long week and were content
watching the sky light up from our couch. The
beauty of it was amazing even if the power did go
out. We went to bed early and slept for ten hours. I
am sorry for the businesses that had to close down
but for us it was perfect. We are fortunate to be busy
at work and I am trying very hard to “walk the walk”
and balance work, family and exercise. That does not
leave a lot of sleep time but so far I am managing.
I am also trying to honor my commitments to the
community organizations I work with. So far this
month, we have attended two fund raisers. One for
the Sacandaga Protection Committee and one for
the Center for Disability Services. I want to give a
huge shout out to everyone who attended the SPC
fund raiser at Lanzi’s. I met several new people and
saw many old friends. It was a beautiful day under
the tent and overall the event was a great success.
Having set up and worked these types of events
throughout the years I have learned that things are
never perfect and you can not please everyone. No

matter how much you plan, things can go wrong.
Every event that has been hosted by the Lanzi’s
has been top notch. The Lanzi family is committed
to community and their lake family. You can
always expect good food, good drinks, friendship
and fun.
As for the event we went to in Saratoga. Bill
and I have only missed two of these parties in
the last 20 years. I was on the committee that
started this event, to raise much needed funds, to
supplement programs for individuals with severe
disabilities. The event is also held outside of the
restaurant in a tent. It is always unbearably hot
and it is not unusual to have a thunderstorm. The
cost is $150 per person which I am not complaining
about because I know ,first hand, how the money
is being spent. After attending this year, I would
