Hundreds of Employees Shocked, Angry after Sudden Shutdown

— they told them on Friday, that’s their last

Employees were reportedly given no notice of
the closure, and at a meeting held Tuesday
were allegedly given final paychecks that they
were told could not be cashed due to
insufficient funds, according to a Redlands
attorney seeking to file a class action lawsuit
against the company.
On behalf of former employee LuAnn Benton,
McCune filed a complaint Tuesday against
PennySaver and OpenGate Capital, a global
private investment firm that acquired the
company from Harte-Hanks, Inc. in Sept.
2013. The complaint seeks to represent all
former employees who wish to be involved in
the matter in a class action lawsuit, McCune
said.

their employees 60 days notice,” said Richard

going to be seeking to move very, very quickly on that. … We need to figure out what happened here.”
PennySaver CEO Ronald Myers released a statement Sunday identifying the alleged cause
of the sudden closure and addressing the “difficult” situation in which former employees
have been placed.
“PennySaver did everything possible to try to stay in business and was in the process of
pursuing a number of alternatives, when our lender unexpectedly ceased our funding late
Friday evening,” Myers said. “Without any funding, the company was forced to immediately cease operations.”
He continued, “We empathize with our employees during this difficult time.”
In an attempt to answer employee questions and provide more information regarding
next steps, Myers also reportedly sent an email addressed “to all PennySaver employees”
informing them of a meeting that was held Tuesday at the Brea facility “to discuss the state
of operations and other important issues.”
“It is important you know that this meeting is optional — no one is required to attend and
you will not be paid for your time if you do attend,” the email stated.
One former employee described the scene in Brea in a post on the “Former PennySaver
CA Employees” Facebook group’s page: “I came to the building this morning and tons of
security guards were in and outside the building. … I went in and the lights were low and
guards were in the hallways.”
In another post referencing Tuesday’s meeting, the employee continued, “My heart was
broken, when I saw the looks on everyone’s faces. … You believed in this company for so
long and what a horrific way to end our careers.”
“OpenGate has taken my livelihood but they can’t take my memories of working with
all the great people,” another post read. “I went (to the meeting) today with a glimmer of
hope all was not lost, but that was not to be.”
Employees attempting to verify funds for their final paychecks Wednesday morning were
still told no funds were available, according to another post, which described the checks as
“useless” and sought legal advice.
The PennySaver had a print circulation of 9.1 million at the time of the closure, making it
the largest direct-mail shopping publication in the United States, according to the website.
For 50 years, the PennySaver has served as a nationwide connection between buyers and
sellers, helping locals find everything from pets, cars and houses for sale to apartments for
rent, job listings and garage sales in their neighborhood, in print in California and across
the country on the web. Prior to the closure, PennySaver officials described the paper as
“a community tradition” that “is in the business of helping local businesses thrive through
effective hyper-local marketing products and services.”
“I’m totally surprised – shocked (at the closure),” said Barbara Ward, who worked for the
PennySaver for about 15 years before parting with the company in 2000. “I never thought
this would happen. When I worked there, the people were, for the most part, great — the
management and everything. When they were here in Santa Clarita, Houston Harte (of
Harte-Hanks, Inc.) came and worked as a hands-on manager in the local offices. It was a
lot of fun.”
Guests Head to the Hills
for Wine in the Pines
By Martha Michael
A favorite event among wine-loving Santa Clarita residents
is just around the corner, at least date-wise. Locals can unwind up in the hills next month during “Wine in the Pines”
in the woods of Pine Mountain. An annual event in Pine
Mountain Village near Frazier Park, the one-day festival
gives guests a fresh outdoor environment for their epicurean
experiences.
Wine in the Pines is a festival that includes wine sampling
and gourmet food in the midst of an art show. With the
participation of numerous wineries, the event brings crowds
to the woods of Pine Mountain, where they can listen to
live music and leisurely sip wines, while they try gourmet
delights and original artwork. The event will be held on June
13, 2015 from 12 Noon to 4 p.m.
Located approximately an hour north of Santa Clarita in
Los Padres National Forest, Pine Mountain Village is off
of the 5 freeway, the site of fresh air and cabin living. Held
every June since 2003, it showcases wines from some of
California’s top wine-growing regions.
“Seeing the wineries participating this year, it promises to be
one of the best wine events ever,” Mark Bailey, owner of the
local Madd Bailey’s Pub and the Wine Room Gallery, said.
“I’m especially excited to see a special section of the village
devoted to the fabulous Lompoc Wine Ghetto Trail.”
At press time, participants include Freixenet USA, Clayhouse Wines, Pomar Junction, Ranchita Canyon Vineyard,
Silkwood Wines, Vista Del Rey Vineyards, Frolicking Frog,
Golden Star Vineyards, Cass Winery, Lapis Luna, Quady
Winery, Opolo Vineyards, Gen7, Ampelos Cellars, Transcendence, Montemar, Zotovich Cellars, Sagebrush Annie’s,
Casa Barranca, Ascension Cellars, Las Flores, Plan B, Veritas Tapas and Wine, Tobin James, Madd Bailey’s Wine, Pali
Wine Company, Hansen Grunner Vineyards, Rock Lobster
Vineyards, Black Bear Red Chair Vineyards, G. Washington,
Gen 7 Wines, Stone Pine, Tercero, Wolf Creek Brewery,
Tioga Sequoia Brewing Company and Advanced Beverage
(Stella Artois).
Many annual guests like to stay the night or weekend in the
woods, and Pine Mountain Village offers accommodations.
There are both rental cabins in Pine Mountain and a Holiday Inn located in Frazier Park nearby.
The Wine Room Gallery Wine Bar in Pine Mountain will
be open on both Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00
p.m. and guests will be able to purchase and take some of
the wine they tasted at the festival. Tickets and information
are available at WineInThePines.com or by calling 661-2421996 and you can find the event on Facebook.
Despite the paper’s longtime establishment in local communities like Santa Clarita, the
sudden closure is consistent with a nationwide decline in the newspaper industry in recent
years.
Due to the rise in new technologies that allow for instant online publication and 24/7 consumer access, the number of Americans turning to digital outlets is up 10 percent over the
last year, according to data published by the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) in
March 2015. NAA data also showed a 43 percent increase in digital marketing in the industry, leaving print advertising revenue at an all-time low—falling from about $65 billion
annually in 2000 to less than $20 billion in recent years.
“The operation is really quite impressive, but the amount of money it takes to keep (the
paper) afloat is also impressive,” said Andrew Loughlin, who worked as an outside sales
executive at the PennySaver for nine years before parting ways with the company prior
to the closure. “In the digital marketing, they’re not competitive. … They’re not getting
enough advertisers to do it; therefore they’ve declined over the years and sold fewer and
fewer papers.”
PennySaver officials are continuing to explore different options for the company, according
to Myers’ statement, including “ongoing discussions” with their lender to re-instate the line
of capital needed to continue operations, as well as discussions with a potential buyer.

Foxy - 1-2 year old terrier mix who was found wandering in the Hollywood Hills. She’s full
of energy and loves to play with the other dogs in her foster home. She’s very good with the
cat too! She would love an active home with another canine companion. Foxy is spayed and
up to date on all vaccinations.
2.
Etta - Border Collie mix, approximately 4 months. Little Etta was one of four Border Collie
puppies surrendered to Mutt Match as young puppies. Etta can be a little shy of strangers
and will need a patient, loving home to help her adjust. She is social with other friendly
dogs and a home with at least one other dog would be most ideal.
3.
Pippa - Jack Russell Terrier (Parson Russell Terrier) mix, female. Very well mannered, affectionate, playful Pippa is great with other friendly dogs and would probably be fine with
cats as well.
4.
Piper - Terrier mix, brindle color, female, will be medium size dog, she is a puppy and good
with dogs and kids.

Nestle - This ADORABLE baby boy was found alone on the streets of San Fernando. A
good samaritan contacted us. Approximately one year, he is good with other dogs of all
sizes and kids, not sure about cats. Due to the unfortunate bad rap and misuse of bully
breeds, previous bully breed experience is required to adopt Nestle. We are patient in finding
the right homes for our beloved dogs and serious about protecting the breed, Nestle will not
be adopted to a first time bully breed owner.

Local Audiologist: ‘Tinnitus Blamed on Hearing Loss’
Sometimes referred to as “ringing in the ears,” tinnitus affects an estimated
50 million Americans, says local audiologist Nola Aronson. She works to
inform patients how to manage symptoms, which she attributes to hearing
loss.
“This app is a really wonderful development in the treatment of tinnitus,”
she said. “Not only does it put a therapeutic tool right at their fingertips, but
also if they are a hearing aid user they have an additional resource available
to them immediately.”
Age-related hearing loss is one of the most common causes of tinnitus,
which many describe as ringing in the ears, buzzing, hissing, whistling,
whooshing or clicking. Other causes include exposure to loud noises and ear
wax buildup. There is no known cure, but there are treatment options.
For more information on Advanced Audiology’s tinnitus treatment services,
visit www.scvadvancedaudiology.com/tinnitus-treatment-valencia-ca.
“Anyone who suffers from tinnitus knows just how inescapable and debilitating the symptoms can be,” said Aronson, owner of Advanced Audiology
in Valencia. “It’s important to have your hearing checked, because often
hearing loss can be linked to tinnitus. If we know what the problem is, we
can more effectively help people.”
Advanced Audiology offers a variety of therapy and treatment options,
including sound and music therapy, stress management, hearing aids and
advice on certain medications that can be of assistance. Aronson is introducing new resources available for users of Starkey Hearing Technologies
hearing aids — which Advanced Audiology provides — with built-in tinnitus relief. Researchers have found that tinnitus sufferers can benefit from
a variety of sound therapies, and Starkey recently introduced a smartphone
app called “Relax” that includes a dozen soothing sounds – including ocean
waves, rain and a crackling fire – to help ease the symptoms of tinnitus. The
sounds can be streamed directly to certain Starkey hearing aids offered by
Advanced Audiology.
Tinnitus treatment is a special focus of Advanced Audiology’s practice, and
Aronson said the Relax app is a great additional tool to recommend to her
patients.

Boys Volleyball
The Valencia boys volleyball team
reached the CIF Southern Section
Division 2 championship match and
met a familiar foe.
Oak Park swept Valencia in three
games to capture the Southern Section
Division 2 championship.
The championship match pitted the
top-two seeded teams against each
other. Oak Park was No. 1. Valencia
came in at No. 2.
It was the first time in seven years the
Valencia boys reached the championship match of the CIF playoffs. They
have won four CIF titles and have
been to eight CIF finals in the past 15
years. The last time they won in 2008,
the Valencia boys also won a national
title.
But Oak Park knocked Valencia out of
the playoffs in 2012 in the semifinals.
Oak Park did it again in the championship match at Cerritos College on
Saturday.
The Valencia boys aren’t done with
playoffs just yet. They are in the CIF

with the bases loaded and two outs.
Anthony Donatella got the last four
outs of the game, to preserve the
shutout.
Caden Salkeld provided the bulk of
the offense. He hit a grand slam in the
third inning and drove in five runs in
the game.
Caden Gonzales drove in two runs.
His first RBI came in the third inning
with a single. He had a sacrifice fly in
the fourth inning.
The Hart baseball team was equally
impressive in the first round of the
CIF playoffs. The Indians shut out
Alemany, 3-0, in the first round of the
playoffs.
Hart start Jack Ralston went the distance, giving up only two hits and taking a no-hitter into the fourth inning.
Hart scored two runs in the first inning. Robert Reeves gave his team
a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the
inning.
High School Baseball
The Valencia baseball team used a
strong pitching effort to win its firstround playoff game. Kevin Chandler
shut out Loyola, 1-0. He gave up four
hits, walked five and struck out eight.
The teams from the Foothill League
made some noise in the opening
rounds of the CIF baseball playoffs.
None louder than Saugus.
Valencia scored the only run of the
game in the fourth inning. Anthony
Lepre tripled in Cole Kleszcz.
The Saugus baseball team started the
playoffs in the wild-card round. The
Centurions quickly disposed of Newbury Park, 6-3. Then Saugus pulled
off perhaps the biggest upset in the

Wilk School Bond Bill
Passes Assembly Floor
Fiscal responsibility is at the heart of a bill that was recently passed in the
State Assembly. Introduced by California State Assemblyman Scott Wilk
(R-Santa Clarita), Assembly Bill 882 aims to ensure that local Proposition
39 General Obligation bonds are paid off in a fiscally responsible manner. It
passed the Assembly Floor 75-0.
“This bill will protect taxpayer dollars by ensuring Prop 39 bond funds used
for technology and equipment are paid off based on the life expectancy of
the items being purchased,” Wilk said. “It is my hope this measure can be
used as a platform to encourage further technology in the classroom to equip
our students to compete in a 21st century global economy.”
AB 882 would require that the term of a bond used for the purposes of furnishing and equipping a classroom, including electronic equipment, shall not
exceed 120 percent of the average expected economic life.
“While I support expanding technology in the classroom, using long-term
bond dollars is not the correct funding source. It is irresponsible to spend
long-term construction bonds on short-term items,” Wilk said. “I can’t think
of anyone who would take out a 30-year loan to buy a laptop. School districts shouldn’t either.”
The bill now heads to the Senate.
The 38th Assembly District encompasses Simi Valley, the northwestern section of the
San Fernando Valley and most of the Santa Clarita Valley.

The Santa Clarita Christian baseball
team won its first-round playoff game,
19-2, over Newbury Park Adventist.
Luke Orona drove in five runs for Santa Clarita Christian. He hit a basesloaded triple in the second inning and
a two-run double in the third inning.
The Albert Einstein Academy baseball team was the only team from the
Santa Clarita Valley to lose in the first
round of the CIF playoffs.
Einstein lost to Animo Leadership,
10-0, in the first round of the Southern
Section Division 7 playoffs.
High School Softball
The softball teams from the Santa
Clarita Valley in the CIF playoffs had
mixed results.
The Albert Einstein Academy softball
team won its first playoff game in
school history.
The Hart softball team made an early
exit, losing in the first round.
But let’s start with West Ranch.
The West Ranch softball team
squeaked past Edison of Huntington
Beach, 2-0, in the first round of the
Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
Keeley Walsh tripled in the go-ahead
run. Pinch-runner Kailey Bevan
scored an insurance run on a sacrifice
fly by Jaclyn Napoli.
West Ranch starter Lexi Sorenson
gave up one hit in six innings.
The Valencia softball team needed
an extra inning to win its first-round
playoff game.
Valencia scored two runs in the eighth
inning to beat Charter Oak, 2-1. The
score was tied 0-0 after seven innings.
Charter Oak scored a run in the top
of the eighth inning. Valencia won the
game in the bottom half of the inning.
Erin Andris hit an RBI triple to tie
the score. Nicole Joseph knocked in
Andris with an RBI single for the winning run.
Valencia’s freshman starter Shea

in eight innings. She struck out three.
The Hart softball team lost to Canyon
of Anaheim, 10-0, in the first round of
the playoffs. Canyon scored seven runs
in the third inning to take a 10-0 lead.
The game ended after five innings.

She also hit

Andria Scott had a big game too, going 4-for-4 and stealing three bases.
The Santa Clarita Christian softball
team lost to Coastal Union, 8-1, in the
first round of the Southern Section
Division 7 playoffs.
Racing
Gabby Chaves, the driver for Bryan
Herta Autosport in the Verizon IndyCar Series, was the rookie of the year
at the 99th running of the Indianapolis
500.
He was 16th in the race, the highest finishing rookie in the race, after starting
in the 29th spot.
“I just kinda wish I could do it again,”
Chaves said after the race on Sunday.
“The BHA team gave me a great car
and a top six finish wasn’t out of the
question.”
Chaves, who drives for the team
owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta, ran
into trouble early in the race and went
down a lap. But he climbed as high
as eighth near the end of the race. He
damaged his right front wing when he
collided with another car.
“After losing a lap early, we made it up
and were moving up quickly, the car
was strong enough to make it up and I
could pass on the inside and outside,”
Chaves said. “Right as we were moving into the top 10 and getting ready
for our last stop, I had minor contact
with the lapped No. 14 car. It knocked
off our right front wing end-fence.
We made the decision to tough it out;
the car had some understeer and a lot
more drag down the straightaways,
which slowed us quite a bit.”
Juan Pablo Montoya won the race for
the second time in his career. Chaves
is the fourth driver from Colombia to
win the rookie of the year at the Indy
500.
“As far as my biggest surprise of
the race, I would have to say it was
easier than I expected after Carb
Day,” Chaves said. “My engineers
and the whole Bowers & Wilkins
Castrol EDGE team gave me a great
car that made passing a lot easier than
I thought. Honestly, we were only
making half-pound air pressure adjustments. The car was awesome and I
can’t wait to come back next year.”
The next race on the IndyCar Series
is the Dual in Detroit at The Raceway
at Belle Island Park in Michigan on
Saturday and Sunday.

Lean to the Left
Swimming Pools and Moral Decline
By Sylvia Turner
I almost never direct my column to Doug’s Rant, as that’s not really my style. I
write to inform the public, offer them ideas (that many of them would never be
exposed to in their ethnocentric, conformist enclaves), and to balance the scales
of an otherwise right-wing radical publication.
pools!! What about dancing? Maybe it was the
twist or the jerk or the monkey or disco! Maybe
Christians shouldn’t dance, because it can cause
moral decline!!
I have, in the past, brought up the difference between a “causal” relationship and
a “correlational” one, and I think it bears repeating. Not only do I find that leftwing babblers consider some variables “causal,” when they are actually correlations (simply occurring simultaneously), but they also like to link variables that
they can’t even prove have any effect on each other.
Could it be YOUR favorite music causing the
decline? Think about it!
It amuses me to hear (or read) people like Doug (of the Rant) connect the “moral decline of society” with the removal of prayer from public schools. It’s utter
nonsense. You do realize, don’t you, Doug, that was FIFTY-THREE years ago?!
First of all, SO MANY things have occurred in the last 50 years that it’s insane to blame a huge brush stroke description like “moral decline” on a single
Supreme Court decision. We would have to agree that the society is in moral
decline. Then we’d have to discuss all the reasons for it. Do you see what a leap
it is? It’s ONLY a BELIEF – it has nothing to do with fact or logic or intelligent
thought.
I don’t know why I can’t get the message through to Doug (of the Rant) that he
should be careful what he wishes for. Do you really want prayer in schools? No
you don’t. Not unless you’re okay with salaat (Muslim prayer). Don’t push for
your grandchildren to have formal prayer in schools unless you’re going to support them in a classroom while Muslim believers are on mats praying that there
is no other God above Allah, while on their knees. You MUST allow prayers
from ALL religions – everyone must be able to participate. If you don’t support
that, you’re bigoted and, really, you’re not even American.
You can stand in the corner with the 89-year-olds who rally for a return to 1962
(yup, that’s the year of the Supreme Court decision), or you can open your eyes
and see that we share the planet – and our country – with some marvelous individuals who aren’t your color, some who don’t conform to your religion, and the
majority who don’t share your views of the world.
Maybe mass transportation has caused moral decline. Maybe it’s electronics, or
space travel, or television programming. Maybe it’s the prevalence of swimming

Woman Arrested on Arson
Charge in Canyon Country
By Perry Smith
www.hometownstation.com
Citizens who enjoy searching for long lost relatives on Ancestry
sites have a hunt ahead of them that they may not know about.
This one is about belongings, which usually means cash.
A Canyon Country woman was booked on an arson charge early Tuesday
morning, after a suspect allegedly tried to set her neighbor’s home on fire in Santa
Clarita.
State Assemblyman Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita) and his staff are
inviting the public to a free informational seminar about “Unclaimed Property” at the Santa Clarita Senior Center this Friday,
May 29, 2015.
Kristine Cosgrove, 53, of Canyon Country, was arrested after a several-hour
standoff with Sheriff ’s Station deputies Monday night, according to witnesses.
It is designed to teach attendees how to navigate the California
State Controller’s website in search of money and property that is
rightfully theirs, but needs to be claimed and retrieved.
Unclaimed Property can be bank accounts, safety deposit box contents, stocks, mutual funds, bonds, certificates of deposit, dividends,
matured insurance policies, etc. The State of California is currently
in possession of more than $7.1 billion in unclaimed property
belonging to approximately 27.9 million individuals and organizations.
California’s Unclaimed Property Law requires corporations, businesses, associations, financial institutions, and insurance companies
(referred to as “Holders”) to annually report and deliver property
to the California State Controller’s Office after there has been no
activity on the account or contact with the owner for a period of
time specified in the law – generally three years or more, according
to the California State Controller’s website.
Assemblyman Wilk will be at the SCV Senior Center from 10 a.m.11:30 a.m., at 22900 Market Street, Room A-1, in Newhall. For

The standoff, which eventually prompted deputies to contact the Sheriff ’s
Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team, took place on the 14900 block of Daffodil
Avenue in Shadow Pines.
Preliminary reports indicate the woman threw gasoline on her neighbor’s door and
porch and then lit the doormat on fire before heading back to her own home across
the street.
The reason for the attack was not released by Sheriff ’s Station officials, but it’s
believed to stem from a dispute with neighbors.
A neighborhood resident who watched the entire incident did not believe there
was a fight or provocation before the alleged arson, but noted there have been
numerous disturbance complaints against the suspect.
Witnesses reported the woman walking away from the scene with a gas can and
fireplace lighter in her hands, before she locked herself into her home shortly after
9:15 p.m.
The confrontation ended without incident around 1:30 a.m. when Cosgrove was
taken into custody, per Sheriff ’s Department arrest records.
No injuries were reported and the house did not appear to sustain any significant
damage, according to Fire Department officials who responded to the home
around 9:19 p.m.
The fire was extinguished by the time officials arrived.
Cosgrove is due in court Thursday, and being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.

DOUG’S RANT !!!!!!
I Rant, You Decide
Another One Bites the Dust!
Those of us in the print media industry were
shocked with the news of the PennySaver in
Southern California going out of business. I guess
it really shouldn’t have been a surprise, though,
considering the changes the daily paper here in
town had to make recently. It further indicates the
rough waters we publishers face these days. Through
industry connections, I know folks who worked
there and I’m sure this came as a “kick in the gut.” I
really feel for them as they struggle to make sense of
this and how they will pay mortgages and feed their
kids.
Fluctuating Ad Revenue Wears Us Out
I don’t blame the PennySaver’s demise entirely on
print media’s decline. I think the economy is almost
as much to blame. Sure, the industry is not what it
used to be, but I, like many publishers, have adjusted
overhead expenses to at least the same level as ad
revenue (very painful adjusting, I might add). The
problem we publishers face is fluctuating ad revenue.
Why does it fluctuate? Because our advertisers’
revenue fluctuates, because their customers’ revenue
fluctuates. It’s a vicious cycle, which is a result of a
fluctuating economy, that some tell us is doing just
fine. I disagree with that assessment vigorously!
Same Crap, Different Flies
It gets down to the same damn crap I’ve been
ranting about in this space for freaking years! This
President and the Democratic Party have their no
common sense heads so far up their butts they are
blinded to the reality of what increases business
success. They are so convinced that more rules,
regulations and tax revenues are the keys to a successful
America, they are economically killing us and even
seem to like it.
Like using billions and billions of gallons of
valuable water to help a few fish out, the present
economic policies make zero sense. If Jerry Brown
is too stupid to put a halt to the fish saving crap, why
should we expect President Obama to have brain
power enough to lower taxes, reduce regulations,
get the hell out of the way and let free enterprise do
its thing? It’s worked wonders in the past – why, for
the sake of basic common sense, do they think it won’t
work again?
Seriously, is it because they are so prideful and can’t
admit failure that they forsake the rest of us for
their own egos? There are all kinds of businesses
and families struggling these days, why not try
something – anything – different? Wake up, look
around, please expand your brain capacity and grow
some to help us all out.
The PennySaver isn’t the only business casualty in
our land. There will be dozens and dozens closing
"Loving God...
Loving Others"
across our land this week and next. The tragic thing
is, it doesn’t have to be this way.

There He Goes Again:
Didn’t his advisors tell him to cool it on this one?
Do they believe and encourage him to spew this
nonsense? I’m talking about dreaded climate change
which, according to Mr. Obama (again), is the worst
thing we face as a civilization.
This is what our President said in his
commencement address at the Coast Guard
Academy last week:
“Climate change is one of those most severe threats. This
is not just a problem for countries on the coasts or for
certain regions of the world. Climate change will impact
every country on the planet. No nation is immune. So,
I am here today to say that climate change constitutes a
serious threat to global security, an immediate risk to our
national security. And, make no mistake, it will impact
how our military defends our country. So, we need to act
and we need to act now. With climate change, denying it
or refusing to deal with it endangers our national security.
It undermines the readiness of our forces.”
Huh? I assume this guy has heard of Al Qaeda and
ISIS? If this wasn’t such a serious issue, his words
would be laughable. What’s really troubling is that
millions of his fans buy this bull crap hook, line and
sinker. Even if we assume for a minute that climate
change is real (I and many others don’t), it is not a
clear and present danger!
Clear and Present:
Mr. President, the real danger we face today, and
for many years to come, is an attack on us, on our
land with actual U.S. citizens being injured, maimed and
killed. The fanaticism these maniacs are showing
should be moving you to unprecedented action.
Even your buddy (not), Bill Clinton, would be all
over these guys like millions of flies on thousands
of acres of crap. Can you imagine what the Bushes,
Reagan, or even Mitt Romney would be doing right
now to wipe these people off the face of this earth?
Until the likes of ISIS/Al Qaeda are scourged
and removed, we are facing a much, much greater
danger than freaking climate change. If Mr. Obama
is too dull of mind to understand this, I guess it will
take an attack over here to knock some common
sense into him. When it happens, then maybe he’ll
cut the crap on climate change … maybe?

All That’s Good in the SCV
Zonta Awards $15,900 in Scholarships, Grants
Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley awarded nearly $16,000 in scholarships
and community grants this year. Two of the scholarship winners also have
been forwarded to District 9, where they will be eligible for another $1,000 and
possible advancement to Zonta International competition. The local Zonta club
also named club Vice President Michelle Woodfork the “2014-15 Zontian of the
Year,” selected for outstanding service to the club and the community and to the
way she represents Zonta in the community.
The winner of the $2,000 Jane M. Klausman Women in Business scholarship is
Deborah Green, who is currently in the first year of her
master’s degree program at American Jewish University.
She is pursuing a master’s degree in nonprofit
management, which she hopes to complete in 2016. She
graduated Magna Cum Laude in English Honors from
Queens College in 1977.
Zonta’s second Young Women in Public Affairs recipient is Megan Schneider,
a senior at Academy of the Canyons. After graduation, Megan plans to attend
a four-year university and major in international relations and economics. She
is interested in pursuing a career in international service and joining the Peace
Corps.
Megan is the co-founder of AOC’s International Club, which hosts meetings
focusing on different countries in an effort to raise awareness and cross-cultural
understanding. She has traveled to Costa Rica and Panama in exchange and
community service programs and has worked with
orphaned and disabled children and refurbished
homes in a Nicaraguan refugee camp. Other
volunteer activities include the SCV Food Pantry,
Project Linus’ Make a Blanket Days for children,
and the SCV Literacy and Arts Festival.
Three women have been chosen to share this year’s
$6,000 Virginia Wrage Memorial grants, given to
mature women facing a life-altering crisis, who
need financial support on their journey to their own
financial independence.
Deborah is active with her synagogue and also has
been active with the National Charity League of the
San Fernando Valley and with Girl Scouts, Greater Los
Angeles Council.
“After many years as a stay-at-home mom and
community volunteer, I reentered the job market
and made a drastic mid-life career change from the
corporate world to a nonprofit organization,” Green
said in her application. “My goal is to take the skills and
experience I acquired working in the for-profit world
and apply that expertise to nonprofit management.”
Her personal goal is to pursue her passion for
community service on a professional level while putting
herself in a position of economic self-sufficiency.
She currently is balancing a full-time job and five
evening MBA classes, while supporting her daughter’s
undergraduate studies at Brandeis University in
Waltham, Mass.
Zonta’s Young Women in Public Affairs Committee
selected two winners this year, one $1,000 winner who
will advance to District 9 competition, and a runnerup, whose accomplishments are being honored with
a $500 scholarship. Claire Sue Hyon Lee, a senior at
Golden Valley High School this year, is the top winner.
She serves as the Associated Student Body president at
Golden Valley and was elected by her peers to represent
all Hart District students as the student board member
on the district’s Governing Board this year.
Claire plans to study sociology “because this field is
concentrated on the factors that develop society, and I
believe that it is necessary to understand how our lives
are structured and impacted in order to argue against or
defend it,” she declared.
Sharon Rodriguez (far left) and Suzie Alziebler (far
right), co-chairs of Zonta’s Community Grants
Committee, pose with this year’s grant recipients:
Phillip Solomon, CEO of Samuel Dixon Family Health
Centers; Linda Davies, M.S., executive director of
Domestic Violence Center of SCV; and Diane Bartley,
chair of the Tech Trek Committee for American
Association of University Women, SCV Branch.
Mari Tovmasyan is a single mother who volunteers
at the Domestic Violence Center. After a divorce
and foreclosure of her home, she knew she needed
to find a job to adequately support herself and
her daughter. She chose a career in Occupational
Therapy Assisting (COTA) because it would help
her become self-supporting while assisting those
in need of therapy. She is enrolling at Santa Ana
College next fall.
The second Virginia Wrage Memorial recipient is
Digna Yepez, who first heard about the grants at
Zonta’s Lunafest film festival. In the early 2000s,
she faced several deaths in her family, a bout of
depression and abandonment by her husband. She
created a network of support by interning at Single
Mothers Outreach, and also is working part time
for Strength United, working with children in foster
care. She is enrolled in the Master in Social Work
program at California State University, Northridge.
Alicia Estrada (l) and Randy Wrage, son of the late
Virginia Wrage, present Virginia Wrage Memorial
Scholarships to (l-r) Digna Yepez, Babe Ramirez and
Mari Tovmasyan. The three women will use the Zonta
grants to complete their educations, allowing them to
become self-supporting.
She eventually hopes to become a lawyer. Her
community involvement included helping with the
SCV Senior Center and working with the homeless
in Tokyo, Japan, through her church. She admires
Malala Yousafzai’ for her activism and initiative to
improve educational opportunities for young women
in Pakistan. She started a program using Twitter and
a blog to share the word about improving the status of
women and women’s rights.
Claire’s application is eligible to win another $1,000
at District 9, where the winner goes on to Zonta
International, which will award ten $4,000 scholarships.
Claire Lee (second from left) and Megan Schneider (far
right) receive their Young Women in Public Affairs
scholarship checks from Zonta committee co-chairs Mary
Ann Dortch and Gloria Mercado-Fortine.
Babe Ramirez also heard of the Virginia Wrage
Memorial Fund through Single Mothers Outreach.
She became a single mother when her husband left
her with one son to care for. She graduated with
a Bachelor of Science degree in the Philippines,
majoring in accounting and laws. She worked as
a staff assistant and court legal researcher at the
Supreme Court of the Philippines for 22 years. She
plans to enter the nearest Tri-County Allied School
to study medical billing and coding.
Zonta’s Community Grants Committee awarded
a total of $6,400 in grants to three community
organizations that support Zonta’s mission of
improving the lives of women and girls. The
Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers, Inc. will
use its grant to support its program for low income
women with diabetes. The Domestic Violence
Center of Santa Clarita Valley will use the grant
to create and facilitate six community workshops
titled “A Woman’s Way to the Law.” The American
Association of University Women, Santa Clarita
Valley Branch will provide two partial scholarships
for girls to attend Tech Trek camp, a weeklong
residential science and math camp held on
university campuses throughout California.

All That’s Good in the SCV
Non-Profit of the Week - The SCV Community Coalition
By Melissa Lampert
Using the Power of Rhythm to Heal
The SCV Community Coalition is comprised
of a variety of local nonprofit organizations
that have come together in the Santa Clarita
Valley with a common goal in mind: using
the power of rhythm to heal.
Music therapy programs like HealthRHYTHMS
have been used to develop improved sleep and
feeding patterns in premature babies, improve
behaviors in at-risk youth, improve cognition,
attention and behavior of school children and
improve the quality of life of seniors. A current
program in development even indicates potential
benefits for children and adults with autism.
A vision of Remo Belli, the founder and
CEO of the Valencia-based drum company
Remo, Inc., the coalition seeks to help reduce
the common stresses community members
face through an evidence-based music
therapy program called HealthRHYTHMS.
“At a time when the urbanization of Santa Clarita brings increased social
stress, key providers of mental health services in our community are
experiencing significant cuts in state funding,” said Alyssa Janney of Remo,
Inc., citing local youth dying from drug overdoses, the SCV homeless
population and tight budgets for local law enforcement, education and
mental/physical health systems.
“All these types of challenges create stress throughout our community
even for members personally unaffected by these specific challenges,” she
continued. “So, stress impacts all our community service systems.”
The HealthRHYTHMS program, which was developed from the research of
neurologist Dr. Barry Bittman, guides participants through a 10-step process,
using rhythm as a tool for communication and personal expression.
“Rhythm is the very foundation of life,” Janney said. “A new mother first
realizes she is pregnant when she hears the heartbeat of her fetus. We realize
the passing of a loved one when breathing rhythm, brain rhythms or heart
rhythms cease. Our bodies are full of rhythms, so we innately understand
and connect with one another through rhythm even when we have no
musical training at all.”
“Research supports the use of rhythm to help
reduce the types of stress that can take a toll
on our community resources,” Janney said.
“Communication and personal expression help families thrive, and makes
personal growth possible.
Our goal is to use the
power of rhythm to
improve communication,
empower constructive
personal expression and
make our community
stronger, happier and
healthier.”

about the SCV Community
Coalition, contact Alyssa
Janney at ajanney@

information about the
HealthRHYTHMS
program, go to www.remo.

Studies conducted by Bittman and other researchers show that rhythm can
strengthen the immune system, reduce stress and “burnout” rates, improve
mood states and enhance creativity and bonding in seniors.

Hero of the Week - Remo Belli
By Melissa Lampert
Founder and CEO of the Valencia-based drum
company Remo Inc., Remo Belli and his wife,
Dr. Ami Belli, have invested millions of dollars
and dedicated more than 30 years of their lives
to understanding how rhythm and drumming
can benefit individuals and families alike.
“It’s time to stop thinking of the drum as just a
musical instrument,” Belli said. “Start thinking
of the drum as a recreational tool for every
family, a wellness tool for every retiree and an
educational tool for every classroom.”
Remo and Ami’s decision to explore a fusion of
their careers—music and medicine—has paved
the way for potentially life-changing music
therapy programs across the country, such as
Remo Inc.’s evidence-based HealthRHYTHMS
program.
“Remo Belli is truly an iconic figure in the
music industry and a bridge builder between
music and medicine,” said Alyssa Janney
of Remo, Inc. “Touched by the challenges
different people experience, (Remo and Ami)
have sought opportunities to use what they
know and love—rhythm—to improve the
human condition.”
The HealthRHYTHMS program, which was
developed from the research of neurologist
Dr. Barry Bittman, guides participants through
a 10-step process, using rhythm as a tool for
communication and personal expression. The
program has been shown to help participants
strengthen their immune systems, reduce stress
and “burnout” rates, improve their mood states
and enhance creativity and bonding in seniors.
In addition to Belli’s investment in the research
of the benefits of rhythm and his involvement
in the development of the HealthRHYTHMS
program, he is also globally known in the music
industry for revolutionizing drumming through
his invention of the first successful synthetic
drumhead in 1957.

Ending on a High Note SCCEA Scholarship Winners
By Martha Michael
Two Canyon High School students were singing a happy tune
recently, after being awarded scholarships from the Santa Clarita
Choral Educators Association. Ariel Herman and Elisha Soronio got the news that they will be receiving scholarship money
after the annual SCCEA Choral Festival last month.
Both of the students had to audition for the awards.
“During the application process, we were required to sing an art
song,” said Ariel Herman, a graduating senior. “I sang Giovanni
Bononcini’s ‘Non Posso Disperar.’”
Students competing for the four scholarships had to also do
some “sight singing” for judges, and were asked questions regarding their future plans.
“The reason I auditioned was because I really want to pursue
singing in the future. I auditioned hoping to earn money to use
for professional vocal training,” said Elisha Soronio, a sophomore at Canyon. “I often sing and perform with my brother in
many places around Santa Clarita, and I hope one day to become an artist who gets to share her own music with the world.”
Ariel will be attending College of the Canyons and plans to
transfer to UCLA to major
and become a

Students in the music program at Canyon High School attend
workshops and compete in festivals throughout the year.
“The musical diversity that my amazing choral director, Mary
Purdy, provides has shaped my appreciation for music immensely,” said Ariel. “I would never have known or admired such
amazing composers such as Bach, Victoria, Vaughan Williams
or Fischer if it wasn’t for choir.”
Both Ariel and Elisha perform with the concert choir and the
smaller group, “Madrigals.”
“We are introduced to so many types of music – some that are
really popular and some I’ve never heard of. It makes me appreciate all the different kinds of beautiful music out there in the
world,” said Elisha. “I’m so grateful to be a part of it, because
it’s the main thing I look forward to every day at school … it’s
where I can express myself freely through music, and be part of
a family who I share a passion with.”

Elisha took home two of the SCCEA scholarships previously,
when she was in junior high school. If the past is an indicator, it
seems Elisha’s trajectory is pointing her in the direction of more
musical rewards.
“I plan on doing something with music,” she said. “I live for
each and every day, thankful for all the blessings I have … for
the future, I leave it all to God.”

California’s Invasion of Privacy Laws
By Robin Sandoval
Ever since Edward Snowden leaked NSA documents about the government’s
domestic surveillance program(s), the term “invasion of privacy” has been in
the news a good deal. Proponents of the government’s surveillance claim that
the practice is necessary in order to protect the homeland from terrorist attacks,
both foreign and domestic. Others claim that American citizens have a right to
privacy and that no reason is good enough to violate that right.
there, and peeking in the door or window.
The thing that makes this a crime is the
“hanging around” or “loitering” aspect.
If you were simply walking by someone›s home, and decided to look in the
windows (for whatever reason) as you wandered by, that would not be in violation of PC 647 (i).
On the subject of national security, both sides have made valid points and the
debate will likely continue until the government can decide on clearly-defined
boundaries of where personal privacy begins and ends.
PC 647 (j) is relatively new, having been signed into law in 1999. An example
of violating this penal code would be looking through a hole or opening into a
room in which a person would have a reasonable expectation of privacy, such
as a bedroom, changing room or bathroom.
Privacy, in terms of one private citizen to another, is clearly defined. California
Penal Code 647(j) PC and 647 (i) PC cover the state’s invasion of privacy laws.
PC 647 (i) is known as California’s “Peeping Tom” law, sometimes referred to
officially as “peeking while loitering.” It basically states that it is unlawful to
peek in the windows or door of any inhabited structure unless you have lawful,
legal business with the occupants.
California Penal Code 647 (j) PC is known as California’s “invasion of privacy
law” and is a little more nuanced. It states that it is unlawful to use telescopes
or binoculars to invade someone’s privacy, secretly photograph a person
through their clothes for the purposes of sexual arousal, or secretly record a
person in a private room in order to see that person›s undergarments or body.
An example of PC 647 (i), or “peeking while loitering” would be something
as simple as hanging around someone’s home, with no legal reason for being
Both laws are considered “disorderly conduct” and are misdemeanor offenses.
The penalties include up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000 for
a first offense. If convicted of a second offense, the defendant faces up to one
year in county jail and/or a fine of up to $2,000.
Of course, sentencing often depends a great deal on one›s prior criminal history. As such, it is also possible to avoid jail and be sentenced to misdemeanor,
or “informal” probation in either case

New Librarian Hired
After Kieczykowski
Retirement
The local library branches have a new professional
at the helm. Kelly Behle was recently named the
Santa Clarita Public Library City Librarian, replacing Ed Kieczykowski, who retired in May. Behle
brings eight years of experience as a librarian to
the Santa Clarita Public Library.
Prior to being named city librarian, Behle worked
as a youth services librarian at the County of
Los Angeles Newhall branch and at the County’s
Castaic Library branch. Following the formation
of the Santa Clarita Public Library, Behle was
hired as the children’s services coordinator in 2011,
and the Valencia Library Branch manager in 2014.
A new program
at the local
non-profit, the
Michael Hoefflin
Foundation, enables supporters
to “adopt” individual children
who are battling
cancer.
In the organization’s continuing mission, to
provide “Hope, Help and Healing” to pediatric
cancer patients, the foundation’s “Day of Hope”
program is designed to offer encouragement and
give inspiration to those receiving chemotherapy
and/or radiation treatments. Community members can “adopt” a child for a day by providing
him/her with a special gift.
Some ideas for requested gifts are Nintendo Wii,
Xbox System, PlayStation, iPod, Kindle Fire
or a mini iPad. The Michael Hoefflin Foundation will purchase the child’s chosen gift after
receiving a donation. Any donation amount
will be greatly appreciated and applied towards
the child’s selected gift. Supporters can request
the child’s age, diagnosis, interests and other
information about the “adopted” child. Participants will be given the opportunity to deliver
the child’s gift personally on a specified date, or
someone from the foundation will deliver the
gift on the supporter’s behalf.
Contact Anita Seibert, outreach program coordinator at anitas@mhf.org or 661-250-4100 if
you would like to participate and give a “Day of
Hope.”
Behle holds a master’s degree in library and information science from University of California, Los
Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts degree in child
development from California State University,
Northridge.
“The Santa Clarita Public Library branches are
some of the most well-utilized in the region, with
tremendous resources and staffing,” said City
Librarian Kelly Behle. “I am looking forward to
working with our excellent team and helping take
the Santa Clarita Public Library to the next level of
excellence in library practices,” she added.

Library, including information on branch hours,

Summer Camps Crop Up for Summer
Part 2 of a 2-part series
By Martha Michael
Tutor Doctor
The YMCA will host a “Teen Day Camp” for
those entering 6th grade through 9th grade at the
Old Orchard YMCA from June 8th – Aug 7th.
A tutoring program in town is hosting four sessions
of educational camps this summer, inviting students to “Unleash your Academic Super Powers!”
There is a “Resident Camp” for ages 7 through
15 at YMCA Camp Whittle in Big Bear from
June 20th – 27th.
Tutor Doctor is holding a new academic summer
program to allow students to build skills, catch up
and gain confidence this summer while being provided with a “camp” experience, including world
class art, theatre, and conversational language.
Breakfast is included for campers in the program,
which will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Six
Flags in Valencia. Each session runs four days –
Monday through Thursday.
Register at the Santa Clarita Valley YMCA,
which is located at 26147 McBean Parkway in
Valencia. You can call 661-253-3593 or visit
www.ymcala.org/scv.
Rainbow Ridge
For locals who sign up for all four weeks of the
program, the camp runs from July 13, 2015 through August 6, 2015. Each
session is one week long, and all families are invited to a closing ceremony on
Thursday, August 6, 2015.
Rainbow Ridge Ranch in Palmdale is offering
a summer program for kids ages 10 and up. On
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of each
week Kathy Zavala will host groups of kids who
get to spend the day with the horses on the ranch. Each child will get to catch a
horse, lead it, brush it, saddle it and ride.
If signed up before June 13, campers receive the following early bird prices:
sign up for two of the four sessions for $520; three weeks for $780; or all four
weeks for $1,000. There is also a $100 non-refundable registration fee for all
students.
All levels of ability are welcome, and campers will experience both arena riding
and trail riding throughout the summer. Sometimes the kids will be able to ride
bareback in the arena, where they can improve balance and gain understanding
about the horse’s movements.
Hilton Garden Inn Six Flags is located at 27710 The Old Road in Valencia.
Contact Tutor Doctor by calling 661-219-5335 or email doliver@tutordoctor.
com.
Campers should bring their own lunches and, on hot days, Zavala plans to do
crafts with the group. There may be time for the kids to decorate their horses
with spray paint during camp time also.
You may also visit
santaclaritatutoring.com or tutordoctor.com.
Rainbow Ridge year round hosts trail rides, parties and other events. There are
pony rides for children age 2-7 and trail riding for ages 7 and up.
YMCA
For more information or to sign up for camp, call Kathy at (661) 538-9271.
If basketball’s your sport and you’re looking for a coach who’s got game, look
no further than Greg Hayes. He’s worked under the best (John Wooden, for
example), and has been running camps in Santa Clarita for years.
The local YMCA is also taking signups for summer camp. There are sessions
for kids just entering kindergarten this year through age 15 at different Santa
Clarita locations.
“Discovery Camp” is for children entering kindergarten through second grade
and “Adventure Camp” is for children entering third grade through sixth grade.
The following are locations with Discovery Camp and Adventure Camp:
Live Oak YMCA June 4th – Aug 7th
Meadows YMCA June 15th – Aug 7th
Valley View YMCA June 15th – Aug 7th
Wiley Canyon YMCA June 15th – Aug 7th
“Specialty Camp” is for kids entering kindergarten through 7th grade and will
be held at the Old Orchard YMCA from June 15th – Aug 7th.
Camps Include: 3D Design, Roller Coaster Tycoon, SPLASH, Master Chef
Jr., Animation Academy, Art-tastic, Fashionista, Robotics, Duct Tape, Bowl-ARama, Gross Cooking and Sports.
Basketball Camp
He has three camps slated for the summer months: Shot Doctor Shooting
Camp, Cool Hoops Basketball Camp, and Girls Basketball Camp, all held in
the Santa Clarita Sports Complex gym.
Students age 9-17 years old at Shot Doctor Shooting Camp will concentrate
on (of course) shooting ability. It is open to boys and girls and will be held at
Valencia High School beginning Saturday, May 30 from 8:30 p.m.-12 Noon.
Cool Hoops Camp is open to both genders also, for ages 7-14 years old and
runs Monday-Thursday, July 27-30. Coach Hayes will emphasize offensive
skills development at the camp, held at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex.
Girls Basketball Camp is a two-day girls camp, where players age 7-14 will receive instruction in shooting and ball handling. It will be held at Valencia High
School June 12-13, 2015.
To register for one of the camps, visit the City of Santa Clarita Seasons Catalog: https://secure.rec1.com/CA/city-santa-clarita/reg.php

Highlands Elementary Dedicates Day
By Kimberly Beers
to Reading, Writing Books
www.hometownstation.com
It was Young Author’s Day at Highlands
Elementary school Friday, an annual event that’s
taken place for almost 25 years, according to school
officials.
“Every student in the school has written a book
over the last three or four months,” said Gail
Knipp, Highlands Elementary school teacher.
After the students are done reading to each other,
guest readers come into the classrooms to read
different children’s books to the students, Knipp
said, adding that the atmosphere on this day is
always calm and soothing.
“It is incredible to see the complexity and growth
these books have as the children get older,” Knipp
said.
Deputies arrested Robert Arvizu, 48, of Newhall, on
Sunday, and he’s being held in lieu of $1 million
bail.
During the day-long event, students are split into
groups with one student from each grade, TK to
6th.
Principal Paul Martinsen visited each group,
listening in on the young authors.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station deputies
entered the home of the victim, Arvizu’s
wife, Courtney Arvizu, 25, and discovered she
was unresponsive and appeared to have injuries
consistent with blunt force trauma.
Each student reads their book to the group, and
then the students write positive comments about
the book for the student to keep.
Many teachers have students work on their books
part-time in the computer lab, providing them with
the ability to improve their computer skills as well.
Deputies made the discovery around 2:10 a.m.
Saturday, officials said in a Nixle news release.
Deputies also located and detained a man in the
residence identified as the victim’s husband.
Courtney Arvizu was pronounced dead at the scene.
Anyone with information about this incident is
encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County
Sheriff ’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323)
890-5500.
If you prefer to provide information anonymously,
you may call “Crime Stoppers” by dialing (800) 222TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your
tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website

Movies Discontinued at Senior Center
By Martha Michael
The Santa Clarita Senior Center had to pull one of its regular programs
recently, due to movie licensing issues. Effective June 2015, the SCV Senior
Center Advisory Council will discontinue its monthly Senior Cinema presentations, which were held every second Wednesday as an ongoing service
to area seniors. The Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC) requires
that movies used for public purposes must pay an annual fee of $315. The fee
exceeds income from the activity at the Senior Center, so it was discontinued.
MPLC is the leading agency urging motion picture copyright compliance
throughout the world. Films, such as DVDs, can be viewed privately in one’s
home, but must comply with the MPLC if viewed publicly. Many organizations innocently infringe upon these rules regularly, using movies and TV
programs for audiovisual presentations. According to the MPLC website, the
umbrella license grants permission to organizations and companies to show
any legally obtained film without the need of reporting titles, dates, or times of
exhibition.

3NT is the normal contract and 9 top tricks are available. But this event
was duplicate bridge where it’s not always enough just to make your contract, it’s also important to make overtricks. So, the question for you South
players is “How do you make 10 tricks after an opening Diamond lead?”
Hearts are the best place to get that extra trick and there are two ways to
or lead towards the Queen hoping that East has the King. As you can see
both plays work and will earn that valuable overtrick. But playing East for
the ♥K is dangerous! If it turns out that West has the King then he can shift
dramatically to the ♠J and South’s cold contract is down one! The correct
win the trick. On this deal, East is the “safe hand”, the one that cannot make
the deadly Spade shift through Dummy’s King.
Post Script When Declarer led a Heart towards Dummy’s AT West could
have made a brilliant and spectacular play! If he rises majestically with the
Jack then Declarer will fear that West started with the King as well. If that’s
the case then the 10th trick cannot be developed without letting the danger
hand gain the lead and the play of the ♥J might persuade a nervous (aka
chicken) Declarer to settle for 9 tricks. But a bold Declarer will go for the
gusto, playing a second round of Hearts and risking the contract for the precious overtrick.
