The Educationa
Schoolchildren and other pre-booked groups can take a closer
look at the four main habitats found in the National Park. The
Centre’s modern structure with energy-efficient architecture and
an innovative interior design offers the very best conditions for
up-to-date programmes associated with environmental education.
The four teaching rooms offer the opportunity to complement the
educational experience of a visit to the exhibition or complete an
excursion into the National Park. Here one can learn with one’s
head, hands and heart while entering into the fascinating world of
Germany’s one and only Alpine National Park.
The Inform
ation Centre
The Outdoor Area
A place for experiencing and learning, the Outdoor Area completes
the centre’s three-part format along with the Information and
Educational Centres.
It comprises two parts: one that is open to all visitors and one
that is reserved for participants who have booked an event at the
Educational Centre. This includes the water, forest and meadow
themed areas, as well as a historic alpine pasture hut (“Lahner
kaser“) built in 1848.
No visitor should miss the Bergarena (resembling an amphitheatre),
the Alpinum with numerous alpine plants, and the panoramic path
with wonderful views towards the National Park, stretching from
Mt Hoher Göll to the Watzmann, Hochkalter and Reiteralm
mountains.

Haus der Berge
Experiencing, Understanding and
Protecting Nature!
Welcome to “Haus der Berge” (house of the mountains), the
National Park Centre in Berchtesgaden! Covering a space of
some 17,000 m² you can discover the centre’s three areas:
the Information Centre, the Educational
Centre and the Outdoor Area. A memorable experience
awaits individual visitors, families, tour groups, school
groups and all those with a spirit of adventure and the
wish to explore!
The Gateway to the Alpine National Park
“Haus der Berge” opened its doors in May 2013
and sees itself as the gateway into
Berchtesgaden National Park. Here
you can find important information
and useful tips in preparation for – or
as post-evaluation of – a visit to the
Park’s protected area. A stop at “Haus
der Berge” is the ideal introduction to an
excursion to the unique jewel of nature
that, incidentally, happens to be the only
Alpine National Park in Germany.
We look forward to your visit!
The “Vertikale Wildnis” exhibition (vertical wilderness) covers an area
of about 1,000 m² in a single hall. Along an ascending pathway, visitors learn about the entire spectrum of life found in Berchtesgaden’s
National Park.
The journey begins at the bottom of Lake Königssee and leads on
through the natural habitats of water, forest, mountain pasture, rocky
terrain and all the way up to the peaks of the Berchtesgaden Alps. In
the rocky terrain habitat one can experience the exhibition’s highlight:
a nature film, lasting about 12 minutes, projected onto an 11m x 15m
screen covering the inside surface of a large mountain panoramic
window. No one visit resembles another: varying room impressions
constantly change according to the season and time of day, in addition to a variety of light and sound features, therefore making every
stroll through the exhibition unique.
The Information Centre also includes:
• A Cinema: showing a variety of films and slide shows.
• A Restaurant: “Spiesberger’s Alpenküche” serves food
and beverages daily from 9:00 – 18:00.
www.spiesberger-alpenkueche.de
• Special Exhibits: Special exhibits on various themes are shown in
the foyer on the upper level. On occasion, regional groups and associations present their work or profile here.
• A Library: This offers a collection of illustrated books and reference books about Berchtesgaden National Park, as well as on
other nature-related themes.

The Four Learning Rooms at the Educational Centre
The water lab (“Wasserlabor”) is a place for visitors to carry out
research. Magnifying devices are available for young and old in order
to study aquatic invertebrates, carry out experiments with the way
water flows and much more.
The forest workshop (“Waldwerkstatt”) allows participants to use
their fantasy and creativity in working with natural materials such as
wood, clay, paper and wool.
The meadow kitchen (“Wiesenküche”) offers the chance to work with
freshly picked herbs, make milk products and to conjure up delicious
dishes from natural ingredients!
Visitors will be met with modern media at the rock panorama
(“Felsenblick”). Here, National Park photos and data can be
processed and presented thanks to laptops, GPS devices,
digi-cams and smartphones!
