The start to 2016 has been an
eventful one for everyone in Senior
School. Students have adjusted well
to their workloads and expectations
and are showing a positive attitude
toward their learning.
Our Student Leaders celebrated their
accomplishments last week at the
Leadership Induction Assembly but
have been working together since the
start of the year. In the first week
they participated in an excursion that
centred around developing their
leadership capa city and they
brainstormed many ideas to work on
in 2016. We have had two student
leaders’ meetings since then to

explore these
ideas and start
some
proposals.
The Green Team (led
by our first ever Environmental
Captains Ben Robertson and Neo
Bahula and facilitated by staff
member Laura Gorman) had its
inaugural meeting last Friday and are
looking at having students in each
level involved in a committee that
promotes sustainability in behaviour
and processes at school and in the
broader community.
Year 12 VCE students have had a
progress interview to discuss their
goals for the year and to put
strategies in place to help them
achieve their targets. In Mentor, Year

10 and 11 students have also been
thinking about the improvements they
would like to make in individual
subjects and reflecting on what they
need to do to make this happen!
“Study” is a key word we talk about a
lot in the Senior School and we want
to equip students with an
understanding of how to study. As
such, I will be running further “Study
Support” sessions on Tuesday 15 and
22 in period 5 for any student in Year
11 and 12 who would like some extra
support or guidance in ‘how to’ study.
In addition, Year 11 students will all
attend a study skills workshop at
school, on Thursday 14 April run by
Elevate Education.

experienced some thought-provoking guest speakers –
Julie from Spin Chat talked to the group about a drinkdriving accident that left her a paraplegic and Sonya
Karas discussed with the students the importance of
“safe” partying, how to plan effectively and look after
your friends. They have constructed shelters using some
awesome teamwork with Supreme Incursions and
completed their CPR training. This project culminated in
an overnight camp to Rosebud this week, with an
excursion to Point Nepean National Park.

Parents and students are reminded that we have an
after school study session for Year 10 students every
Monday and Year 11 and 12 students each Wednesday
in D1. Students are encouraged to utilise the study
space to keep up to date with their work and get
assistance from their teachers outside of class time.

Jen Muir, form part of the Wellbeing
Team.

the newsletter about current events
and students news items.
We acknowledge students who have
been seen to be living by the schools
values and also enjoy celebrating our
student successes. There will always
be space in this feature for our
students who have accomplished or
succeeded in an out of school activity
or sport. Please let us know when

Like a Girl
This week we recognise International
Women’s Day around the world. Each
year, on March 8, women are
celebrated
for their achievements
and men and women use this day to
use their collective voice and action to
promote gender equality.
This year’s theme is “Pledge for
Parity” which emphases equal
conditions for women particularly in
regard to status and pay.
While women’s rights have come a
long way in 100 years it’s still an
unfortunate fact that women are not
paid equally as men, nor are they
equally represented in business and
politics. It will be some time before
we see significant change in this area
but what we can do is reflect on how
we view and treat our girls, our
daughters, our mothers and sisters
today.
We
are
sometimes
unaware of
the
negative
messages we see
and send our girls because they are
so entrenched in our culture and
social structures.
Comments we still commonly see in
girls’ magazines (in a well known
Australian girls’ magazine published
yesterday) include ‘How to get him to
notice you’, ‘How to sculpt a few extra
inches off’, which devalue their worth
and importance. It would be better to
see personal stories of strong,
successful women, such as Michelle
Payne, the first female Australian
jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.
I encourage you to view the following

emphasises the disempowering
messages of what it is to be ‘like a
girl’. It highlights the relevance of
International Women’s Day in the 21st
Century and is, importantly, a call to
action to value our girls.

As you may have noticed, the building at
the front of the College has been
undergoing extensive maintenance and
repair work this year. The next phase of
this work will see the General Office and
Principal Class being relocated to the
Forum from Wednesday 16 March until the
end of this term. As a result, I would ask
that no ‘in person’ payments are made until
Monday 21 March. Students can make
payments during the times listed below.
Payments via QKR, direct deposit and over
the phone are still welcome during this
time.

On Friday 26 February, Year 9 Advance students went on
a snorkelling excursion to Portsea. The bus ride was long,
yet interesting, with plenty of sing-a-longs to pass the
time. We were given wetsuits, flippers and snorkelling
masks on our arrival and headed towards the boat. The
first port of call was Popes Eye, a marine park, which was
home to many species of marine life. We were given the
opportunity to explore and spotted a stingray. The next
stop was where we went swimming with the seals. It was
amazing and the seals were all very playful. For many of
us, it was our first time snorkelling and overall the whole
experience was surreal. Thank you very much to Mr Evans
and Ms Baker for taking us there.

International Students visit
Government House
On Wednesday March 2, Mordialloc
College International students Yunhan
Xing (Hans ) Year 8, Ziwei Xie ( Nate )
Year 9, Zhehao Tang ( Jason) Year 11 and
Ms Li Ping Virgo went to see the Governor
in the Ballroom at Government House.
This was the International School Student
Welcome Reception for Victorian
Government Schools, Independent Schools
and Catholic Schools
The Governor gave the welcoming
address, the Parliamentary Secretary also
gave a speech and there was a student
speaker who was awarded a Year 12
Student Leadership Award in 2014.
Highvale Secondary College students gave
a String performance. Also the students
and Li Ping met the Chinese Consul Mr. Song.
In total 450 students and teachers attended plus
many overseas Consuls joined the group. A very
good day was had by all.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to
assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips,
camps and sporting activities.
If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a
temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A
special consideration category also exists for asylum
seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the
school to use towards expenses relating to camps,
excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your
child.
HOW TO APPLY
Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application
form or download from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef
or the College website: www.mcsc.vic.edu.au
Eligible families need to lodge a new application
every year. You should lodge an application as soon
as possible to access this allowance as processing
has commenced for 2016.

community forum regarding the importance of climate
change research and the work of the CSIRO
I invite students and teachers from Mordialloc College to attend a community forum
regarding the importance of climate change research and the work of the CSIRO
Marine and Atmospheric Research Centre in Aspendale.
I will be joined at this forum by former Chief Scientist of Australia, Professor Ian
Chubb, internationally recognised climate scientist Professor Will Steffen, Shadow
Minister for Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Industry, Senator Kim Carr
and leading scientists from CSIRO’s Aspendale Centre.
The CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Centre in Aspendale is responsible for
some of the most significant findings in climate change research of the past 50 years.
The forum will feature a Q&A session and will also provide an excellent opportunity for
members of the public and secondary school students and teachers to hear from and
put questions to some of Australia’s most respected scientists. The details of this
forum are:
