from the chairman AAM is in the forefront
together with the Malaysian
Road Safety Department in
the national effort to increase
road safety awareness and
reduce fatalities on the road
With the alarming increase of road
accidents and fatalities around the globe,
the United Nations General Assembly
has recently declared 2011 to 2020 as a
Decade of Action for Road Safety.
The objective of this 10-year
programme is to save at least five million
lives worldwide..
The resolution requests the UN
to prepare a Plan of Action for the
Decade and calls upon member states
to implement road safety activities,
particularly in the areas of road safety
management, road infrastructure, vehicle
safety and road user behaviour. They are
also invited to set their own national road
traffic casualty reduction targets to be
achieved by the end of the Decade, in line
with the Plan of Action.
In Malaysia, the Automobile Association
of Malaysia (AAM) over the years has
initiated and embarked on a series of
road safety initiatives, from organizing
nationwide road safety campaigns to
fostering a strong working relationship with
the Government, relevant agencies and
various other non-government agencies
in the effort to reduce fatalities and road
accidents.
Today, the AAM is in the forefront
together with the Malaysian Road Safety
Department in the national effort to
increase road safety awareness and
reduce fatalities on the road.
As at 2008, statistics revealed that
fatalities on the road had increased by
3.9% to 6,527 cases in 2008, compared
with 6,282 fatalities in 2007 of which
motorcyclists and pillion riders made up
80% of accidents, casualties and fatalities.
In fact, about 60% of road traffic fatalities
involve motorcyclists and an average of 17
motorcyclists and pillion riders lose their
lives on the road everyday.
According to the Malaysian Institute of
Road Safety Research (MIROS), evidence
gathered from past crash investigations
involving motorcyclists and pillion riders
point to the fact that many lives could have
been saved by merely observing the basic
fundamentals of safe riding. This includes
respecting the traffic regulations, ensuring
the roadworthiness of the motorcycle,
wearing and properly fastening the helmet,
donning additional protective gear in the
form of gloves, a jacket, reflective vest
and shoes (avoid wearing slippers), and
refraining from taking unnecessary risks.
Yet, time and time again, these basic rules
designed to save lives are being ignored.
As we work hard to save more lives on
the road, the AAM would like to appeal to
members to do their part by upholding the
values of road safety. Let us all be twice as
responsible and considerate on the road.
There will always be a constant need to
remind or refresh the awareness of existing
road users. Similarly, there will continue to
be new generations of road users.
In this respect, the AAM remains
steadfast and committed to the long-term
objective of championing the safe use of
our roads for all Malaysian road users.

MOTORING
By Rajesh Taluar
‘Location, location, location!’ may be
a universal mantra where it concerns
property ownership and investment, but
have you considered traffic management
and road safety aspects in the location
you live or want to live in? We list some
pertinent characteristics to consider in your
neighbourhood, and as you deliberate on a
property purchase
Property Purchase Considerations
If you are considering a property purchase,
don’t just focus on the property but on the
bigger picture. Ensure that the locality
meets your requirements.
While property values are an important
consideration as you set out to buy into
your dream home or neighbourhood, do
take the time to reflect on the following as
you set out on your property hunt:
• Residential properties in areas with less
traffic jams naturally command better
values for the fact that you would be
spending less time on the road trying to
get in and out of your neighbourhood.
• That said, traffic jams are a reality of
many of our road and highway systems.
Check on alternative routes, if any, to
and from where you want to live.
• You want to ensure the street you buy
on is not used as a shortcut between
two busier streets.
• If you are considering a corner property,
do take into account the street traffic.
Corner units attract more traffic and
can be unsafe for children. In this
context, buying an intermediate house
or a cul-de-sac property would likely
make more sense.
• Finding your dream house is indeed
a great achievement. However, does
your dream location contain what you
need like a grocery store/supermarket,
schools, a hospital/clinic, etc.?
• Noise levels should also be a
consideration. Houses facing main
roads will naturally experience higher
noise levels. The speed of the traffic
also influences the level. Faster
vehicles will generate higher noise
levels as they roar along. In addition,
roads frequented by motorcycles may
encounter higher noise levels. However,
the presence of sound barrier walls or
meets property
big trees may help dampen such levels
slightly.
As a Driver
Your golden rule as you drive around your
neighbourhood should simply be drive
slower. Realise that speeding through
residential areas will make very little, if
any, difference in the total time it will take
you to complete your entire trip.
Learn to adopt a different attitude;
expect the unexpected on residential
streets. It may not be your fault if you
have an accident, but imagine the pain you
would have to live with if you hit a child or
an elderly pedestrian.
Indeed, you should be aware that
children are the primary pedestrians on
neighbourhood streets, and that they are
the most likely victims of careless drivers.
A couple of important pointers to consider
are:
• Make a conscious effort to keep to the
speed limit on all residential streets.
Remind your family members and
neighbours of the speed limit too.
• Pedestrians have the right-of-way at
intersections whether crossings are
painted on the street or not. Remember
that they are someone’s loved one
crossing the street!
As a Parent and a Responsible
Resident
Ensure that your children know and
understand the rules of the road. Studies
have shown that younger children have
difficulty in making safe judgments about
traffic dangers. Do consider the following
for some peace of mind:
• If you live in a busy neighbourhood,
don’t let your children play on the
street.
• Warn your children against darting into
the road after pets or toys.
• Teach your children to stop, look both
ways, and listen before crossing a street
– even if your street is relatively quiet.
• Ensure that your children know that
even though cars are supposed to stop,
they may not.
• As a resident, do take the initiative
to inform your local council about
problems along your street, such as
damaged or missing traffic signs and
dangerous potholes.
• Reverse park your vehicle in your
driveway. That way, if you have an
emergency, it would be easier for you
to drive out rather than take extra
precaution when reversing out.
• Establish a traffic safety committee
within your neighbourhood’s
homeowners association if there is
one. Alternatively, you could seek the
support of your neighbours and local
authority to establish such a committee.

KONVOI MESRA
Perodua ALZA Borneo 2010
Kuching, 7 Feb: Five charity homes in Kuching
received RM4,300 “ang pow” each from Perodua
in conjunction with the “Konvoi Mesra Perodua
ALZA Borneo 2010” in Sarawak here today.
The 5 charity homes were Rumah
dan Asrama Kanak-Kanak Bala Tentera,
Pertubuhan Orang Cacat Penglihatan Malaysia
Cawangan Sarawak, Persatuan Bagi Kanakkanak Terencat Akal Sarawak (PERKATA),
Pertubuhan Ibubapa Kanak-Kanak Keperluan
Istimewa Sarawak (PIBAKAT) and Sarawak
Children Cancer Society.
Sarawak Minister of Social Development
and Urbanisation Dato’ Sri William Mawan
Ikom presented the cheques to representatives
of the charity organisations at the Perodua Sales
Sdn Bhd flagship branch.
At the same ceremony, Dato’ Sri William
Mawan also presented RM100 cash and school
bag as well as stationeries to each of the selected
20 needy students from Sekolah Kebangsaan
Laksamana in Kuching.
“For the Chinese New Year season, Perodua
we would like to spread the festive joy with the
children of these homes,” En Aminar Rashid
said at the handover ceremony. Also present
was Perodua Manufacturing Sdn Bhd managing
director Mr Osamu Oaki.
En Aminar also thanked Perodua’s dealers
in Sarawak namely Erazoom Sdn Bhd, Gamma
Automobile Sdn Bhd, Zahna Auto Sdn Bhd,
SDH Auto Sdn Bhd and Vendoria Sdn Bhd for
their contributions to the charity organisations.
Dato’ Sri William Mawan later flagged off
the “Konvoi Mesra Perodua ALZA Borneo 2010”
which headed to a shopping mall in Kuching.
The convoy of 9 vehicles including 5
units of the multipurpose vehicle (MPV)
Perodua ALZA had earlier departed
from Miri on 3 Feb. The
convoy made stops at
hotspots in Miri
(3 Feb), Bintulu
(4 Feb) and
Sibu (5 Feb)
before arriving
in Kuching
yesterday.
The “5+2
seater”
Perodua ALZA which was launched on 23 Nov
last year has been well received by Malaysians,
with some 20,000 bookings and a waiting list of
between 3 and 3.5 months. Of the total, 10% of
these bookings were from Sabah and Sarawak.
“We will be ramping up production of the
ALZA to reduce the waiting period,” En Aminar
Rashid said.
A similar “Konvoi Mesra Perodua ALZA
Borneo 2010” in Sabah was also launched from
Tawau to Kota Kinabalu from 3-7 Feb.
“These simultaneous convoys allow us to
showcase Perodua’s latest model, the Perodua
ALZA, not only to those living in the urban areas
but also those in smaller towns and interiors
when the convoys pass by,” Encik Aminar Rashid
explained.
He said Perodua welcomed the Federal
Government allocation of RM1.2 billion to
improve the infrastructure in Sabah and
Sarawak under the stimulus packages
announced last year in addition to the funds
allocated by these states for the same purpose.
This will improve the economy of both Sabah and
Sarawak, he added.
“We see a lot of potential for the Perodua
ALZA in Sabah and Sarawak as we believe
many of our existing customers in both states
want to upgrade to a bigger car as their income
and family size grows,” he said.
“I am happy with the tremendous response
from the public where ever the convoys stopped.
There were lots of enquiries especially about the
Perodua ALZA,” he added.
JARNO TRULLI
news develops his first Lotus race car
F1 Racing driver
Jarno Trulli assists in
the development of the
Lotus Evora Cup race
car during its first test
session at Snetterton.
The Lotus Evora Cup race car is the
latest addition to the Lotus Motorsport
racing stable. Fresh from its debut at the
Autosport International racing car show in
Birmingham the Evora Cup race car was
given its first shake-down test at a wintery
Snetterton circuit in Norfolk, UK on the
10th and 11th of February 2010.
Lotus Motorsport is conducting an
extensive development program for the
Evora Cup race car, with Jarno Trulli and
his Race Engineer, Gianluca Pisanello
bringing their vast racing, development
and engineering experience to fine tune the
latest Lotus mid-engined race car.
Jarno Trulli and Gianluca Pisanello
provided specific input into the aerodynamic
balance for slow, medium and fast corners,
guidance on the racing setup of the
suspension geometry and direction on the
engine’s calibration.
After driving the Lotus Evora Cup for
the first time, Jarno Trulli said, “I have
enjoyed driving the road going Lotus Evora
very much and I believe that the Evora Cup
will be a very competitive race car package.
It was very rewarding to be the first to drive
the Evora Cup race car even though the
snowy conditions at Snetterton were fairly
challenging at times!”
Jarno continued, “The car will continue
to be developed with new updates coming
soon, but even after the initial drive it is
obvious that the car has huge potential.
I look forward to working with Lotus
Motorsport in developing the car further
and I know that my years of motorsport
experience will help make the Evora Cup
race car even better.”
Claudio Berro, Director of Motorsport
at Group Lotus plc stated, “It is a privilege
to work on the development of the Evora
Cup race car with such an experienced
driver and engineering team as Jarno Trulli
and Gianluca Pisanello and I believe that
this collaboration will produce a great race
car for a range of motorsport applications.
It is a very exciting time for Lotus and I
am honoured to be leading the motorsport
programmes at Lotus, starting with the
Lotus Evora Cup racing car and race series.
Gianluca Pisanello, Race Engineer for
Jarno Trulli said, “I am impressed with the
whole Evora Cup race car package, which
demonstrates that the road going Lotus
Evora is such a competent sports car in the
first place and an excellent basis to develop a
competitive race car.”
In the past a number of Lotus F1 drivers
have successfully raced or assisted in the
development of Lotus Cars including F1
World Champions Jim Clark and Nigel
Mansell. Jim Clark was a great exponent of
the three wheel drift in his Lotus Cortina,
campaigning the Lotus to win the British
Touring Car Championship in 1964. Whilst
Nigel Mansell raced for Lotus he was
involved in the development of the prototype
Active Suspension Lotus Esprit.
The Evora Cup race car is an evocative
sports car that will offer a great platform
to race in high level motor sport. The GT4
race car will go on sale starting at £120,000
excluding taxes for the sprint racing version,
with the endurance specification race car
£150,000 excluding taxes.
The final design, aero’ package and
techincal specifications will be presented at
the Geneva Motorshow in March 2010.

hybrid breakthrough at the
2010 GENEVA
MOTOR SHOW
Porsche Intelligent Performance in Three Unique Renditions
Porsche is keeping up the pace in the
enhancement of efficiency, shifting to
next gear at the 2010 Geneva Motor
Show with no less than three world
debuts in hybrid technology.
The absolute highlight is the concept
of a high-performance mid-engined sports
car with plug-in hybrid technology, the
918 Spyder. The Cayenne S Hybrid, in
turn, is the first production hybrid in the
history of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG.
And the 911 GT3 R Hybrid is making
its debut as the first racing car from
Zuffenhausen with electrical front-axle
drive and a flywheel energy reservoir.
Consuming just three litres on 100
kilometres, equal to 94.0 mpg imp, in the
New European Driving Cycle, the 918
Spyder is absolutely unique in the super
sports car segment. This also applies to
its ultra-low CO2 emission rating of just
70 g/km. The new Cayenne S Hybrid, in
turn, consuming just 8.2 litres on 100
kilometres, equal to 34.4 mpg imp, comes
right at the top of its segment, offering
the performance of a large eight-cylinder
SUV on unparalleled fuel economy.
These three hybrid models also
set the new benchmark in Porsche’s
traditional strategy to offer even more
news 11
sporting driving pleasure on even
less fuel. Such an ongoing increase in
efficiency is the quintessence of 60 years
of sports car construction now described
most appropriately by the term “Porsche
Intelligent Performance”.
The performance of a Porsche is based
on intelligent and innovative ideas for
even more effective engines and lighter
bodies, for more power and dynamics on
lower fuel consumption and emissions.
After all, a sports car that wastes
resources does not make sense – at least
not with Porsche.
This has been Porsche’s recipe for
success right from the beginning,
with the very first
sports car bearing
the name
Porsche
winning
races and
beating
the
competition . And to this day, this
tradition has characterised every new
model in the range.
Precisely this is why Porsche
concentrates on technologies which
enhance performance on the one hand
and improve efficiency – which also
means everyday driving qualities
– on the other. Examples are
direct Fuel Injection, the Porsche-
Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, VarioCam
Plus, the turbocharger with variable
turbine geometry for gasoline engines,
and Auto Start Stop in conjunction with
the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe in
the new Porsche Panamera.
Now this impressive range of
innovations is being further enhanced
by these three new hybrid models, each
of which sets a milestone in Porsche’s
strategy of electro-mobility.

LOTUS ELISE
The new Lotus Elise probably has
the lowest CO2 for its performance
for any gasoline high performance
sportscar in the world
The Lotus Elise revolutionised the
sportscar market 14 years ago when the
small lightweight agile 2-seat mid engine
sportscar was introduced. By ensuring
that the Elise stuck rigidly to Lotus’
core values of performance through light
weight, the Elise was able to produce
supercar performance with city car
economy.
Making its debut at the 80th

THE BODY – AN EVOLUTION
The new 2011 model year Elise range is
on sale now and will be in showrooms
from April 2010. The body of the new
2011 model year Elise is an evolution
of the iconic Elise design, retaining the
character and style, while offering a
more planted, purposeful stance and a
pure, contemporary look that links it to
the Evora. As with all Lotus product the
design is an exciting blend of dramatic
style and functional efficiency
The new Elise body has a fresh
sculptured front, including a new
bumper, front clam and access panel that
combine to give the Elise a wider look
with more road presence.
At the rear of the car the new engine
has been encased by a distinctive “twinspine” engine cover whilst lower down
a more aggressive diffuser is tightly
wrapped by an elegant new bumper
design that now includes the rear licence
plate.
New headlamp units with
distinctively sculptured LED lighting
guides (incorporating daytime running
16 new car
lamps and direction indicators) give a
contemporary twist to this classic design.
Elsewhere, the signature, Lotus “mouth”
and familiar sculptured forms have been
sensitively refined to give a crisper, more
dynamic look. The repositioning of lamp
functions has enabled the creation of
broad clean surface between the fenders
which combines with sleek corner intakes
and prominent splitter detail to give a
broader more planted stance.
The theme of purity is carried
through to the cooling apertures that are
efficiently finished with a new lightweight
aluminium mesh that gives the car a
classically sporting character.
The rear boot is now opened from the
cockpit rather than via a separate key
operation. The high quality feel of the
Elise is continued throughout the car
with the Elise graphic incorporated into
the new side LED direction indicators,
like those on the Evora.
The driving position, from the
perfectly positioned pedals and steering
wheel, to the comfortable and supportive
seats with ProBax** technology means
that, like all Lotus cars, the driver
becomes part of the car rather than being
just a passenger.
With the sleek new body the
aerodynamics have improved giving a
reduction in the coefficient of drag of 4%.
Finally, a choice of two beautiful, light
weight wheel designs are available; an
incredibly light forged wheel and a new
cast wheel completes the picture for this
sensitive update of a Lotus Icon.
ADDITIONAL CHANGES TO THE
2011 MODEL YEAR LOTUS ELISE
The new 2011 model year Elise has
a number of additional changes and
improvements, with the installation of a
new advanced 1.6 litre Valvematic engine
meeting EURO 5 regulations. This new
engine is 200cc smaller than the outgoing
Elise S model and produces similar power
(136 PS, 100 kW, 134 hp at 6800 rpm)
with maximum torque of 160 Nm, 118
lbft at 4400 rpm, but offers a significant
improvement to fuel economy of over 23%,
to 6.14 litres / 100km (46 mpg)* and a
reduction in CO2 emission by more than
13%*. This provides the new Lotus Elise
with the lowest CO2 per performance for
any gasoline high performance sportscar
in the world. This high technology
engine is mated to a new 6-speed manual
gearbox, providing closer and more
performance orientated ratios than the
outgoing 5 speed box.
The 1.6 litre engine is controlled via
the bespoke Lotus T6 engine management
system. Cruise control is available on the
Elise for the first time with the controls
present on a stalk located to the left of the
steering column.
New cast wheels have been designed
specifically for the Elise and the new
optional forged wheels weigh just 29.26
kg per set, 2.14 kg lighter than a set
of lightweight cast versions. Both are
available in silver or black colour.
Dany Bahar, Chief Executive of
Group Lotus said, “The Lotus Elise
revolutionised the sportscar when it was
launched 14 years ago and now the Lotus
Elise has become greener, giving drivers
access to class leading performance with
less guilt.”
Donato Coco, Director of Design said,
“The Elise is an iconic sportscar and it
was important that we did not complicate
its design, so we made the car more pure
in its look, improved the aerodynamics,
and gave it a more contemporary look
with high quality detailing.”
Paul Newsome, Director of Lotus
Product Engineering said, “We are always
looking at ways of keeping the Elise
ahead of its peers and for the 2011 model
year we have improved efficiency without
losing the innate fun that has made the
Elise legendary.”
Andreas Prillmann, Chief Commercial
Officer for Lotus Cars said, “In its
14 years of production the Elise has
accounted for 32% of all the 61 years
of Lotus production, illustrating how
significant to the brand and well loved it
is. The 2011 model year Elise is greener,
purer and more desirable, making it even
more relevant to today’s marketplace. The
new Elise underlines Lotus’ reputation
as one of the most innovative sports car
manufacturers in the world.”

THE 2011 MODEL YEAR ELISE IN MORE DETAIL
by Toyota . The key to this engine’s
performance and efficiency is the
Valvematic system (a variable valve lift
mechanism), which is combined with
the dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timingintelligent). The engine continuously
controls intake valve opening/closing
timing and the intake valve lift to vary
the volume of the intake airflow, giving
significant improvements in efficiency
and fuel economy. This ensures optimal
performance based on the engines
operational condition, thus helping the
Elise achieve both high fuel efficiency
and high performance.
First of all, the maximum power
output is achieved at near maximum
revs (engine speed) of 6800 rpm and
maximum torque (a respectable 160
Nm, 118 lb.ft) is reached at 4400
rpm. This gives a good combination
of mid range pull but also encourages
the driver to rev the engine to the
maximum permitted engine speed of
7000 rpm (transient rev limit). Like all
Elise sportscars, there are three shift
up lights, on the binnacle cumulatively
lighting when the driver is getting
closer to the rev limiter and when all
three are illuminated, they flash to
indicate that the driver is almost on the
rev limiter so time to change up a gear!
The height of the engine cover has
been raised by 34mm to accommodate
the taller 1ZR engine compared to the
previous 1ZZ engine from the outgoing
model due, in part, to the additional
Valvematic technology included on
the new engine. This has given Lotus
engineers an opportunity to subtly
redesign the rear engine cover to match
the design theme from the front and rear
of the car.
CHASSIS
The Lotus Elise is built around the
revolutionary and award winning
extruded and bonded aluminium
chassis, with a lightweight steel rear
subframe. The chassis weighs 68 kg (150
lbs) and has a stiffness of 9,800 Nm per
degree, giving a high level of control of
the suspension. At the rear, and also
acting as a rear energy absorbing crash
structure, a lightweight steel subframe
carries the engine and gearbox. At the
front, the radiator and key ancillaries
are mounted into a high tech composite
energy absorbing crash structure that is
both lightweight, compact and over three
times more energy absorbing than the
equivalent steel structure.
RIDE AND HANDLING
The legendary Lotus ride and handling
gives a superb high performance, sporty
drive, combined with a compliant ride
and progressive on limit handling, it
makes the Elise a car that demands to be
driven.
The entry level Lotus Elise weighs
876 kg, making it one of the lightest
fully homologated sportscars in the
world. This low weight translates into
efficient performance with minimal
environmental impact in terms of
emissions and fuel consumption. The
efficiency of the Elise structure means
that the 136 PS (100 kW, 134 hp) delivers
phenomenal performance.
Few cars can match the delicacy
and accuracy of the steering, throttle
and brakes of the Elise and all of these
factors contribute to the excellent driving
experience of the Elise.
SAFETY
The Elise has high performance AP
Racing callipers at the front and Brembo
callipers at the rear linked to 282 mm
vented and cross-drilled cast iron discs to
give excellent stopping power.
The Elise comes as standard with a
track tuned ABS system that is designed
to be unobtrusive under normal driving
conditions. This system is designed to be
used on track and has a high threshold,
only intervening in emergencies.
The ABS system is linked to a
lightweight pedal box with steel pedal
arms and extruded aluminium pads. This
unit also has an electronic (drive-by-wire)
throttle for
quick, smooth

linear engine
response.

Dr Robert Hentschel, Director of
Lotus Engineering said: “Innovation has
always been at the heart of Lotus and is
needed now more than ever. The Evora
414E Hybrid is the perfect demonstration
of Lotus Engineering’s core competencies:
lightweight architectures, efficient

technologies that Lotus Engineering
continues to develop to overcome the
current environmental challenges facing
the automotive industry and showcases
the future direction that the sector is
taking and why Lotus Engineering is
perfectly placed to lead the technological
development in this area.”
THE DRIVETRAIN
For the Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid, Lotus
Engineering has developed a highly
efficient, high performance drivetrain
system consisting of twin motors each
limited to providing 152 kW (207 PS/204
hp) of power and 400 Nm (295 lbft) of
torque to each wheel via independent,
single speed, reduction transmissions
integrated into a single housing, enabling
torque vectoring dynamic control of the
vehicle.
The vehicle energy storage system is
made up of the latest Lithium Polymer
battery chemistry providing 17 kWH
energy storage capacity. The battery pack
is optimised for energy density, efficiency
and high power demand, with over 100
kW discharge capability.
The Lotus Range Extender engine
provides 35 kW (48 PS/47 hp) of power
at 3,500 rpm via the integrated electrical
generator and features an innovative
architecture comprising an aluminium
monoblock construction, integrating the
cylinder block, cylinder head and exhaust
manifold in one casting. This results in
reduced engine mass, assembly costs,
package size and improved emissions
and engine durability. The engine
uses an optimised two-valve, port-fuel
injection combustion system to reduce
cost and mass and can be operated on
alcohol-based fuels and/or gasoline. The
generator converts mechanical energy to
electrical energy to replenish the battery
pack charge and provides additional
vehicle range in a small light weight
package. The generator is also used as a
motor to start the range extender engine.
The low mass of the range extender unit
(85 kg) and compact package makes it
new car 21
ideal for the series hybrid drivetrain in
the Evora 414E Hybird.
All the operation and management
of the range extender engine, the power
management of the batteries and
motor control are controlled by Lotus’
electronic control units and software
systems. Full energy management of
all the operating systems is the key to
maximising performance and operation
while minimising energy consumption
and CO2 emissions.
For everyday commuting journeys,
up to 35 miles can be travelled using
battery power. The battery can be
charged overnight using a conventional
domestic mains supply through a socket
concealed by the rear number plate. This
permits the vehicle to operate with zero
tailpipe emissions. For longer journeys,
exceeding the battery capacity, the
highly efficient range extender engine is
used as a generator to supply the motor
with electrical power and top up the
battery.
Lotus has used its own vehicle
simulation tools to determine the size,
capacity, power and performance of all
the components in the drivetrain system
to optimise the system operation. Overall
this is far more energy efficient, weight
efficient and cost effective than fitting
the vehicle with a larger and more
expensive battery, which for the majority
of short journeys is a redundant weight,
which increases energy requirements.
chassis has remained unchanged
from the Evora which maintains the
structural integrity and strength
performance of the original car.
The structure progresses the Lotus
‘bonded and riveted’ technology with
new and unique extrusions and folded
panels, whilst providing production
build modularity and lower cost repairs.
The chassis has been designed for
scalability so that it can be extended in
width, length and height. The strength
and stiffness of the low volume VVA
chassis can be modified cost effectively
by varying the wall thickness of the
extrusions, without altering the exterior
dimensions. The ability to lengthen
or shorten extrusions with the option
to tailor the chassis stiffness vastly
increases the number of vehicles that
With regard to the total lifetime CO2
emissions of the vehicle, including the
energy required to manufacture and
run it, the range extender solution has a
lower overall CO2 footprint than a fully
electric car of comparable performance
and operating range running with a
larger battery.
THE PACKAGE
The Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid structure
is the same award-winning, versatile
vehicle architecture used on the Lotus
Evora. The low volume architecture was
designed with the upmost flexibility
in mind. The Evora 414E Hybrid is a
perfect example of how to integrate
a compact packaged drivetrain, with
excellent performance and range, while
using this underpinning. The complete
22 new car
can be developed from this vehicle
architecture.
DRIVING DYNAMICS
The Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid offers
exhilarating, all-round dynamic
performance and takes advantage
of Lotus developed torque vectoring
dynamics. Torque vectoring, which
is the capacity to generate different
torques at each of the driving wheels, is
particularly suited to electric vehicles and
significantly reduces the conflict between
stability and response.
A key benefit of separate motors
to drive each rear wheel individually is
that this facilitates a much higher level
of vehicle dynamics control. Driving the
wheels with different levels of torque
can not only generate all the capabilities
of a conventional ESP system using
energy regeneration as opposed to brake
application, but it can also actively drive
each wheel forward at different rates,
producing a turning moment at the rear
of the vehicle in addition to the steering
input.
This can be used to enhance low
speed manoeuvrability and ease of
parking but can also be used to produce
a much greater level of straight line high
speed stability. Incorporating lateral
sensors the system also provides stability
control capabilities and levels of steering
response normally only associated with
heavy and expensive rear steer systems.
This can provide automatic correction
of both understeer and oversteer
characteristics. In addition, the standard
method to provide high speed stability of
designing the rear wheels to toe-in is not
required as the torque vectoring system
automatically provides this stability
control, with toe-in increasing rolling
resistance, lowering fuel economy and
increasing tyre wear. Lotus‘ long history
of active suspension control provides the
core capability to develop this technology
and provides extraordinary driving
pleasure on the Evora 414E Hybrid.
DRIVER INTERACTION
The Evora 414E Hybrid provides less of
a psychological step change for people
familiar with high performance cars
compared to other electric and hybrid
sports cars. The car has a simulated
paddle shift gear change offering
ultra quick gear changes reminiscent
of a dual clutch transmission, while
actually single speed. This enhances the
driver interaction with the vehicle and
provides a driving experience similar
to current internal combustion engine
high performance sports cars. The Evora
414E Hybrid uses a column mounted
paddle shift to simulate the gear change
and a synthesised engine sound changes
frequency with virtual gear selection. The
drive torque is also modulated to simulate
a physical feeling of a gearshift jolt.
new car 23
The virtual gearshift simulation, like
a conventional gearbox, is used to change
the driving characteristics and response
of the vehicle. The most significant
aspect that this offers the driver is the
ability to control the vehicle deceleration
by simulating engine braking through
a virtual downshift in gears. Unlike
true engine braking, the Lotus system
does not dissipate the energy of the
moving vehicle through internal engine
friction but uses the electric motors to
regenerate the energy back into the
battery. While many electric and hybrid
vehicles provide engine braking, this is
generally at a fixed rate or preselected
rate. In some driving situations this
can either be too aggressive, slowing
the vehicle unnecessarily, or too light,
requiring additional braking application.
The Lotus system effectively allows the
driver to select the appropriate level of
regeneration by simulating stepping
down by one, two or even three gears.
The simulation of engine braking
through both the gear noise change
and the retardation of the vehicle is
fully intuitive to a driver familiar with
a conventional gearbox. The simulated
gearchange capability can be selected for
greater driving involvement or switched
off for more relaxed driving.
The Evora 414E Hybrid uses
the Lotus Engineering and Harman
International developed HALOsonic
suite of noise solutions. The first of
which is Electronic Sound Synthesis.
This generates engine sounds inside the
vehicle through the audio system where
it provides an exciting sports sound in
line with the brand and nature of the
vehicle together with a high level of
driver feedback in an intuitive manner.
In addition, it also generates sound
on the outside of the vehicle through
speakers mounted at the front and
rear to provide a warning to increase
pedestrian safety, which is especially
important for electric and hybrid vehicles
which can be difficult to hear at slower
speeds.
There are four driver selectable
engine sounds currently on the vehicle,
two of which have been designed to
have characteristics of a multi-cylinder
conventional V6 and V12 engine.
There is also a futuristic sound and a
combination of a conventional engine and
a futuristic sound, enhancing the brand
identity of the vehicle as a step forward
in electric vehicle design.
The addition of this Lotus patented
simulated gearshift concept not only
provides for an exciting and involving
driving experience that customers would
expect from a Lotus, but also enhances
the driver’s control of the vehicle while
providing the capability for more efficient
operation through a greater use of
energy regeneration.
THE DESIGN
The distinctive colour scheme and
‘floating’ roof have been carefully
designed to accent the cars electric
vehicle technology whilst complementing
the iconic lines of the Evora.
Copper, a colour often associated
with electrical systems, has been chosen
for the car’s exterior and interior. A
contemporary satin finish paint is
complemented by electrical circuit
inspired graphics that highlight the
car’s key feature lines and the unique
glazed roof panel. The newly extended
glazed zone integrates seamlessly
with the existing forms of the Evora
whilst showcasing the key components
behind the hybrid and electric vehicle
technology.
The signature copper theme is
consistently carried throughout the
car from the dramatic seat stripes and
instrument panel inserts to the copper
callipers that nestle behind the carbon
grey forged wheels. Inside the cabin a
sense of quality and richness has been
created by carefully juxtaposing the
different tactile qualities intrinsic to
leather, Alcantara and metal.

Highly Efficient and Ultra-Fast:
Concept Car with
Plug-In Hybrid
High-Performance Porsche 918 Spyder Mid-Engined Sports Car
Presenting a high-performance mid-engined
concept sports car with ultra-efficient, lowemission drive technology, Dr. Ing. h.c. F.
Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is further increasing
the Company’s competence in hybrid
technology.
The 918 Spyder prototype combines
high-tech racing features and electro-mobility
to offer a fascinating range of qualities: An
emission level of just 70 grams CO2 per
kilometre on fuel consumption of three
litres/100 kilometres (equal to 94 mpg imp)
truly outstanding even for an ultra-compact
city car, on the one hand, combined with
the performance of a super sports and
acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h
in just under 3.2 seconds, top speed of 320
km/h (198 mph) plus, and a lap time on the
Nordschleife of Nürburgring in less than
7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche
Carrera GT, on the other.
The 918 Spyder is one of three Porsche
models with hybrid drive making their world
debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. This
trio – made up of Porsche’s new Cayenne S
Hybrid SUV with parallel full-hybrid drive,
the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racing car with electric
drive on the front axle and a flywheel mass
battery, and the two-seater high-performance
918 Spyder mid-engined sports car with plugin hybrid technology – clearly demonstrates
not only the great bandwidth of this new
drive technology, but also the innovative
power of Porsche as a genuine pioneer in
hybrid drive.
The highly innovative 918 Spyder
concept car combines Porsche’s Intelligent
Performance technology, high-tech in
motorsport, and classic but modern design to
make a truly convincing statement.
The Porsche 918 Spyder with plug-in
hybrid drive provides the performance
of a thoroughbred super sports car on
fuel consumption of just three litres/100
kilometres in the New European Driving
Cycle, equal to a CO2 emission rating of 70
g/km.
This open two-seater is powered by a highspeed V8 developing more than 500 bhp and
running at maximum speed engine of 9,200
rpm as well as electric motors on the front and
rear axle with overall mechanical output of
218 bhp (160 kW).
The V8 combustion engine is a further
development of the highly successful 3.4-litre
power unit already featured in the RS Spyder
racing car and positioned midship in front of
the rear axle, giving the car the right set-up
for supreme performance on the race track
through its good balance.
Power is transmitted to the
wheels by a seven-speed PorscheDoppelkupplungsgetriebe also feeding the
power of the electric drive system to the rear
axle. The front-wheel electric drive powers the
wheels through a firm transmission ratio.
The energy reservoir is a fluid-cooled
lithium-ion battery positioned behind the
passenger cell. The big advantage of a plug-in
hybrid is that the battery can be charged on
the regular electrical network. A further point
is that the car’s kinetic energy is converted
into electrical energy fed into the battery
when applying the brakes, thus providing
additional energy for fast and dynamic
acceleration.
A button on the steering wheel allows the
driver to choose among four different running
modes: The E-Drive mode is for running the
car under electric power alone, with a range of
up to 25 km or 16 miles. In the Hybrid mode
the 918 Spyder uses both the electric motors
and the combustion engine as a function of
driving conditions and requirements, offering
a range from particularly fuel-efficient all the
way to extra-powerful.
The Sport Hybrid mode uses both drive
systems, but with the focus on performance.
Most of the drive power goes to the rear
wheels, with Torque Vectoring serving
to additionally improve the car’s driving
dynamics.
In the Race Hybrid mode the drive
systems are focused on pure performance
with the highest standard of driving dynamics
on the track, running at the limit to their
power and dynamic output. With the battery
sufficiently charged, a push-to-pass button
feeds in additional electrical power (E-Boost),
for example when overtaking or for even
better performance.
With the hybrid drive system offering
this wide range of individual modes and
new car 25
applications, the 918 Spyder is able either
to achieve lap times comparable to those
of a thoroughbred racing car – such as less
than 7:30 minutes on the Nordschleife
of Nürburgring – or, focusing on a more
economical style of motoring, with a
reduction in emissions to just 70 grams of
CO2 per kilometre.
Like the drivetrain, the lightweight body
structure of the 918 Spyder also bears out
the car’s DNA carried over directly from
motorsport: The modular structure with its
monocoque bodyshell made of carbon-fibrereinforced plastic (CFP) and the appropriate
use of magnesium and aluminium not only
reduce weight to less than 1,490 kg or 3,285
lb, but also ensure supreme driving precision
thanks to the very high level of torsional
stiffness.
Reminiscent of highly successful,
legendary racing cars such as the Porsche
917 Le Mans and the current Porsche RS
Spyder, the 918 Spyder with its design
concept so typical of Porsche arouses
powerful emotions. The combination of
racing car dimensions, clearly structured
design with perfectly balanced surfaces,
and innovative details all round creates
an overall pattern of aesthetic, perfectly
balanced harmony in design full of power
and dynamics. This indeed is the ideal
synthesis of form and function following
Porsche’s design DNA.
The smooth balance of tradition and
progress gives the car a powerful stance on
the road in its combination of dimensions.
Variable aerodynamics typical of Porsche
ensure both visionary and traditional
highlights especially around the rear spoiler.
The striking rear hoods extending out of the
headrests, in turn, not only
fulfil an aerodynamic
function on the 918
Spyder, but also
accommodate
retractable
air
intakes with a ram air function.
The driver and passenger are not only
perfectly embedded in contoured sports
bucket seats, but also form part of the
cockpit with its synthesis of efficient function
and ergonomic high-tech operation offering
an outlook at the interior architecture we
may possibly see in super sports cars of the
future. The three free-standing circular dials
for road speed (left), engine speed (middle)
and energy management (right) would
appear to come directly from a racing car in
the ‘60s, bearing out that unique philosophy
of driver orientation so characteristic of
Porsche.
The centre console rising up towards
the front in the 918 Spyder houses a touchsensitive surface for intuitive control of
the car’s functions, serving
consistently to reduce
the number of visible
controls and maintain
the principle
of direct
operation.
The control units relevant to the driver
are concentrated in particular on the threespoke multifunction sports steering wheel,
while the variable driving modes, again so
typical of Porsche, are supplemented by
a map switch enabling the driver to call
up various drive programs and serving
as the push-to-pass button for E-boosting,
for example when overtaking. Instrument
illumination, finally, varies from green for
the consumption-oriented running modes
to red for the performance-oriented driving
programs.
The 918 Spyder also comes with
further innovative functions such as the
Range Manager. After being activated in
the Center Display, the Range Manager
uses the map in the navigation system to
present the remaining range the car is able
to cover, naturally allowing the driver to
influence that range through the appropriate
choice of power and performance. In cities
with environmental alert areas the Range
Manager also states whether the driver is
able to reach a certain destination on electric
power alone.
Applying this information and using
further info on the availability and location
of special energy filling stations, the driver
is then able to choose his personal style of
driving as well as the right battery charge
and filling strategy.
Offering a unique combination
of extremely low fuel consumption,
supreme performance and long electric
range, the Porsche 918 Spyder represents
an essential milestone in Porsche’s
strategy on the way to genuine electromobility.

1. Is the 918
Spyder a
concept car
already close to
production?
The 918 Spyder is a study impressively demonstrating the future
potentials of sports and super-sports cars. Porsche will continue to
examine this interesting concept. No decision has been taken yet on
series production, and will depend on the response of prospects and the
public. But so far all concept cars developed by Porsche have continued
on to series production, with just one exception.
2. How many
customers
must show
their interest
to justify
series
production?
Our first objective at the Geneva Motor
Show is to make it clear that Porsche is in a
posi-tion to implement revolutionary design
and technical concepts. We will assess public
re-sponse in peace and quiet.
4. With the
Carrera GT
you decided
spontaneously to build
the car after its first
appearance at a motor
show?
All the decisions we
take are based on an
assessment of customer
interest. This is also the
case here - then we will
discuss the next steps.
3. Are there
realistic
chances of
this concept
coming
reality?
We are convinced that this concept,
through its thrilling qualities alone,
will appeal to our prospects. So we
can well imagine building the 918
Spyder in the near future.
5. Where
would you
build the car?
First we want to thrill the public and
measure their inter-est. Then we will be
able to make realistic assessments.
new car 27
6. How many
units of such a 7. Is a supercar might you sports car still
appropriate
build?
today?
Sales of the Carrera GT amounted to more
than 1,200 units. Now we are assessing the
situation carefully and checking out the
response. Then we will take the next steps.
The latest studies confirm
once again that customers
wish to enjoy sports cars
with their original, typical
features. So we will
maintain the key features
of the sports car and continue to develop Porsche’s
DNA intelligently with
new technologies. The
design of the car provides
a clear rendition of these
technical features and
continues the development
of Porsche’s design
language pointing into the
future.
8. Why is Porsche
presenting three different
hybrid systems in Geneva?
Because hybrid is not necessarily hybrid
– each system of-fers its benefits. Our
philosophy is to find an intelligent
solution for each specific purpose. Parallel
full-hybrid drive in the Cayenne S Hybrid
is very convenient for everyday use,
reducing fuel consumption and increasing
output at the same time. Front-axle
hybrid on the GT3 R Hybrid, on the
other hand, with its innovative electrical
flywheel battery, provides the high flow
of power required for a racing car as
well as intelligent, efficient use of power
in accelerating and when applying the
brakes (recupe-ration). The 918 Spyder
with its high-performance plug-in hybrid
system, finally, combines extreme power
and performance with minimum fuel
consumption. So that Porsche offers the
right technology for each requirement.
10. Could
you imagine
features of
this study in
other Porsche
models?
9. Could you
imagine this
car as an allelectric car?
The cars Porsche builds for
its customers will always be
technically feasible and sensible.
There are still many obstacles to
overcome before an all-electric car
really makes sense. So while we are
working consistently on concepts
for the future, Porsche’s philosophy
is not to build cars which do not
meet and fulfil our brand values.
like this serves
as a spearhead
in technology for
future models.
Quite generally,
we check out the
options we have
with all our projects
and then consider
whether their
implementation
would make sense.
11. Are the
consumption
and emission
figures you
quote final?
The figures were
measured in prespecified test cycles,
applying realistic
simulations, and
reflect the current
status of our concept.
Fuel consumption of
3.0 ltr/100 km (equal
to 94 mpg imp) and
emissions of 70 g/km
CO2 are of course quite
revolutionary on such a
concept.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE 2009 PETRONAS
MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX
An unusually heavy downpour forced the
56-lap race to be stopped after just 31 laps.
As the race did not cover the required 75%
distance, drivers were only awarded half
points in what was only the fifth time in the
history of Formula One.
Brawn-Mercedes driver Jenson Button
drove a sterling race from pole position to
win the race ahead of BMW-Sauber’s Nick
Heidfeld and Toyota’s Timo Glock. It was to
be Button’s second straight race victory after
the opening round in Australia.
A disastrous start dropped Button to
fourth position, who later found himself in
pursuit of Williams driver Nico Rosberg,
Toyota’s Jarno Trulli and Renault’s Fernando
Alonso. The first round of pit-stops however,
saw Button take the lead.
“When the safety car was pulling away at
20 seconds a lap, you know that it’s too wet for
an F1 car,” Button later told the media.
A LAP OF SEPANG WITH REIGNING WORLD CHAMPION
AND 2009 PETRONAS MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX
WINNER JENSON BUTTON
At the end of the pit straight I will reach
around 300km/h in 6th gear before braking
hard for the first turn taken in second gear at
around 75km/h.
Very shortly after this is another slightly
slower second gear left-hand corner taken
at under 70km/h. From here, I accelerate
through the next right-hand corner which is
taken flat up to around 285km/h in top gear.
From here I have to brake down to
second gear and 105km/h for the next
right-hand corner. The long left-hand corner
following this is taken in fourth gear. The
first part at around 250km/h and then
slightly losing speed down to 230km/h with
the car being stabilised with just a little bit of
left foot braking.
This corner is immediately followed by a
right hand curve, again taken in 4th gear at
a very similar speed, before accelerating on
the short straight up to 5th gear to 275km/h,
then braking again to third gear and 170km/
h for the next right-hand corner. Another
similar short straight where I will get into
5th gear and about 280km/h leads to the very
tight left hand 1st gear corner taken at just
over 70km/h.
A long fourth gear 230km/h corner then
leads into the difficult 3rd gear 140km/h
corner which has a very difficult entry. The
next left-hand curve is taken extremely fast
in 5th gear at 250km/h before braking for
the penultimate corner which is taken in 2nd
gear at around 115km/h.
On the back straight I will reach very
similar speed to the pit straight before
braking hard for the final corner, which is
taken in 2nd gear at just over 80km/h. This
leads back on to the pit straight where I will
cross the finish line at around 265km/h.

“The heat makes life

GRAND PRIX-VIEW
tough here, and it is
going to be a long,
hard race.” – Heikki
Kovalainen
With the likes of Michael Schumacher back
in the driver’s seat, the sheer glamour of the
Petronas-backed Mercedes Grand Prix team
being on track and the emotional presence
of the Malaysian-owned Lotus Racing in
action, this year’s Petronas Malaysian
Grand Prix has all the ingredients of being
nothing short of an explosive race.
With the exception of Mercedes Grand
Prix, Ferrari and McLaren’s worldchampionship driver line-up of Jenson
Button and Lewis Hamilton, it would be
fair to presume that much of the attention
on the grid this year will be on the four
new Formula 1 teams led by Lotus Racing,
Virgin, Campos and USF1.
After a fourth place finish with Toyota
at Sepang in 2009, Jarno Trulli is Lotus
Racing’s best bet for a top 10 finish at the
Malaysian Grand Prix this year. He’s one
of the most experienced drivers on the grid
and this will also be his 12th year racing
at Sepang. Brazilian Rubens Barrichello
is perhaps the only other driver to race
in Sepang since the staging of the first
Malaysian Grand Prix in 1999.
Michael Schumacher of course, remains
the most decorated driver Malaysia, having
won the race three times (in 2000, 2001 and
2004) and claiming five pole positions.
For Petronas, doing well in Sepang goes
without saying, and although it has never
won the Malaysian Grand Prix, its best ever
performance was from Nick Heidfeld in the
BMW Sauber last year.
With weather conditions playing a
critical role in deciding the outcome of the
race – last year’s race was rained out and
cancelled midway – drivers will have to
contend with extreme heat or extremely wet
conditions.
Either way, Sepang remains as one
of the fastest tracks on the championship
calendar, and this is another big challenge
for the four new teams who unlike the
others, will be fielding a car in the race
with practically no real track time and
experience. Some will even have to contend
with drivers who will be racing in Sepang for
the very first time.
On paper at least, this is where Lotus
Racing appears to have the upper hand
over the other new teams, and if they can
wrestle together a good aerodynamics,
performance package and reliability over the
weekend, may seriously be in contention for
a spectacular debut on Malaysian soil.
Traditionally however, Sepang has been
a Ferrari hunting ground with a total of five
race wins and seven pole positions. Not to
mention of course that its driver this season
Fernando Alonso has won the Malaysian
Grand Prix twice in 2005 and 2007, doing
so behind the wheel of two different cars
– Renault and McLaren respectively. Alonso
also has two pole positions in Malaysia to his
credit in 2003 and 2005. Team mate Felipe
Massa may not have won in Malaysia, but
he did claim two pole positions in 2007 and
2008.
“It’s always hot here so this is an issue both
for the drivers and the cars, as the heat can
lead to mechanical and technical issues.”
– Jarno Trulli

LOTUS RACING – 2010 AND BEYOND
If you put aside all the technical and
technological intricacies that make a
Formula 1 winner, you have to admit that
the all-new Lotus Cosworth T127 Formula 1
car is a rather sexy presentation.
In fact, it’s one of the better liveried cars
this season aside from Mercedes Grand Prix
and Ferrari, and although Formula 1 isn’t
exactly a beauty pageant, this in itself speaks
volumes as far as image, prestige and brand
communication is concerned.
Decked in the traditional racing
colours of green and yellow that Lotus is so
synonymous for, it is a fitting image of a car
and team that would be making its return
to Formula 1 racing since its last track
appearance in 1994.
With all the fan fare surrounding the
debut of this Malaysian-owned and funded
team, not to mention the 1 Malaysia
message that it will be carrying around
the world, it’s understandable that certain
quarters who would have preferred to see the
Malaysian flag and colours emblazoned on
the car. Look beyond this however, and the
absence of the flag and colours doesn’t make
the team any less Malaysian.
For all that this new team has
accomplished, Lotus Racing deserves
the highest commendation for all its
accomplishments leading to the Malaysian
Grand Prix so far. Designing a car,
constructing it and pitting it against the
world’s most experienced Formula 1 teams
on the grid is by no means an easy and
inexpensive task. Syabas!
While the privately-funded Lotus
Racing has openly committed that it will
be racing every step of the way in 2010, one
cannot deny that the element of sponsorship
is critical in relation to sustainability,
continuity and competitiveness of any team
in Formula 1.
While it is true that a big budget not
necessarily guarantees competitiveness,
on the other hand, a small budget will
undoubtedly also place greater constraints
on a team and limit its accessibility to muchrequired resources.
If there is anything Formula 1 is not, it is
in being a no-frills sport.
It can’t because of its nature and
heritage of being top level motor-racing
and fundamentally a platform that pushes
the limit of automotive technological
advancements. Innovation and creative may
be built on a limited budget, but technology
is never.
Looking back on history, car
manufacturers that have ventured into
Formula 1 did so not only to better position
their brands internationally but equally
pursued the importance of developing new
technologies that could be applied in their
mass produced offerings. Pride, tradition and
heritage meanwhile, has been the driving
force of many traditional constructors
like McLaren, Williams and Sauber who
continue to make their presence felt in
Formula 1.
In the case of Lotus Racing, the longterm objective and aspirations have yet
to be clearly communicated with the
exception that the foray into Formula 1 was
purely Malaysian. While Malaysian car
manufacturer PROTON’s involvement in
the team will leverage on the Lotus’ heritage
and worldwide admiration and popularity,
its relationship is reported to be limited to
licensing the Lotus name to the team.
While brand communication, recall and
awareness will be strong, the absence of a
technical relationship between PROTON
and Lotus Racing however, essentially
means it is highly unlikely PROTON
will benefit from or be privy to any of the
research and development activities taking
place at Formula 1 level. Perhaps the only
consolation is the fact that Lotus, which is
a 100%-owned subsidiary of PROTON, is
directly involved in the construction of the
car and had apart from the driver’s seat and
steering wheel, contributed to designing
and constructing the cooling system which
forms an integral part of the car. Take into
consideration the closely-guarded secrets
and proprietary technical information in
Formula 1 and within Lotus, it’s difficult to
establish if PROTON could in fact capitalize
on any of this.
As far as the other anchor sponsors of the
team goes (Naza & Tune Group), the spin-off
and benefits of Formula 1, or essentially
the returns of investment, will be key to
determining their continued involvement
and interest in the sport. This is no different
from the business consideration made by
Petronas in its sponsorship of Mercedes
Grand Prix this season, or Tourism
Malaysia’s sponsorship of Stewart Grand
Prix in the nineties. The Government has
however, openly declared that it was not
funding the project this time round apart
from giving the team its undivided moral
support and encouragement.
As a privately-funded team similar to
the likes of Richard Branson’s Virgin Racing,
Lotus Racing’s continuity in Formula 1 in
reality rests with the parties invested in the
project. The difference between Virgin and
Lotus however, is in the name it carries into
Formula 1, and the self-imposed Malaysian
interest which brings with it much more
severe implications and repercussions.
Going back to the point made about car
manufacturers and Formula 1 constructors,
it is unclear at the moment as to who - apart
from the individuals funding the project - will
take ownership of ensuring the continuity of
Lotus in Formula 1.
And, until there appears to be clearer
objectives – at least to Malaysians at large
– it is also concerning to read about plans
to set-up a wind tunnel testing facility in
Malaysia in conjunction with intentions to
relocate Lotus Racing from Norfolk in the
United Kingdom to the Sepang International
Circuit. For the moment at least, Team
Principal Datuk Tony Fernandes has
announced that this may be a little too soon
to consider given the fact the team has better
accessibility to all the resources in Formula 1
in the United Kingdom.
As daunting is the task that lies ahead
for Lotus Racing in 2010 and as admirable as
its mission to propel Malaysia into the world
of cutting-edge technology, the true challenge
will first be to firmly establish continuity.

LOTUS
COSWORTH
T127
As the lights

stunning green
and yellow livery
was seen for the
first time
Lotus Racing today unveiled its 2010
challenger, the Lotus Cosworth T127,
at a glittering event in London’s Royal
Horticultural Hall. Team Principal Tony
Fernandes was joined on stage by Chief
Technical Officer Mike Gascoyne and
drivers Jarno Trulli, Heikki Kovalainen
and Fairuz Fauzy to take the wraps
off the car in front of a 500 strong live
audience.
As the lights came up the car’s
stunning green and yellow livery was
seen for the first time, striking an
emotional chord with both young and old
alike and evoking memories of some of
motor racing’s most iconic moments in an
entirely contemporary fashion.
Tony Fernandes gave his thoughts
on the astonishing achievement the
Lotus Racing team has accomplished
in launching the car just five short
months since the team was granted its
entry to the FIA Formula One World
Championships, saying: “I am extremely
proud to be here today and to be able to
show the world the fruits of the team’s
hard work over the last five months.
It’s humbling for me and my fellow
shareholders, Kamarudin Meranun and
SM Nasarudin to see how a team that
five months ago didn’t even exist is now
a thriving workforce, full of enthusiasm
motorsport 35
and passion for Lotus Racing and
the challenges ahead and capable of
producing such a beautiful machine in
such a short time.
“Now we’ve achieved two major
milestones; confirming our entry and
unveiling our car, but now the real work
starts. Next we move on to testing and
the season ahead and I’m confident
that the team will exceed expectations
wherever we go, and will do so on a
wave of support around the world
that has been growing daily since we
first unleashed Lotus Racing back in
September ’09.”
Mike Gascoyne added his thoughts,
saying “The last few months have
been some of the most challenging of
my career, but it’s been a challenge
the whole team and I have thrived on
since we first started work on the car
up in Norfolk. I’m delighted that we’ve
reached this point, and now we have a
beautiful car that gives us a great base
to work from for the season ahead and
a fighting chance of going racing in the
right way, with a winning mentality.
The hard part starts now, and I know
everyone in the team and I are up for
whatever lies ahead.”
The Lotus Racing T127 is powered by
Cosworth and will use an Xtrac gearbox
and, in line with all 2010 teams, will be
running on Bridgestone tyres.
We have a beautiful car that
gives us a great base to work
from for the season ahead
and a fighting chance of going

Tufoil Engine Treatment is the standard
for lubrication effectiveness, utilizes a
complex formula that has never been
duplicated in another engine treatment.
This formula containing colloidal
‘polytetrafluoroethylene’ (PTFE)
and soluble molybdenum produces
lubricants that adheres to internal
engine surfaces thereby achieving very
low friction and wear characteristics.
However, PTFE and moly cannot just
be stirred into motor oil to make a
satisfactory lubricant. The colloidal
suspension technology is highly
sophisticated. Tufoil is the leader
in this technology – with patented
chemistry and PTFE particles so small
that cannot clog oil filters, clump or
settle in the oil pan.

DRIVING IN THE RAIN
– ENDUROSHIELD
AUTOGLASS PROTECTION
&
ROAD SAFETY
windscreen visibility
Your safety and actions behind the wheel
of a car are only as good as how well you
can see ahead, and when required, take
the necessary evasive actions to avoid a
road accident. More often than not, the
importance of seeing clearly is taken for
granted by motorists.
Good driver visibility allows you to see
ahead well in the distance. Visibility – the
quality of visibility that is – depends on a
number of factors, from weather conditions
and vehicle design to the condition of the
front windscreen. Dirty windows can also
increase glare.
As a rule of thumb, keeping your
windscreen clean is essential to safe
driving.
Our car windscreen is continuously
hit by small particles such as sand and
dirt that wears the surface. On top of this,
worn out windscreen wipers can damage
the windscreen over time by scratching
these tiny particles across the surface.
Periodically check the water level in
the windscreen wiper bottle. Make sure
that the wiper spray nozzles are also
functioning properly and do not become
blocked. When traveling, do not hesitate to
use the windscreen wiper nozzles to clean
the windscreen, or alternatively, clean
your windscreen at the petrol station while
you’re filling up. Similarly, ensure that the
windscreen defogger is also functioning
properly.
As a point of interest, always keep in
mind that nothing looks the same at night
as it does during the day. When driving
at night or in the dark, visibility,
shapes, sizes, colors and distance
are distorted. A dirty windscreen
also increases glare, making it more
difficult to see.
Chips & Cracks
With the technology available
today, not all chipped or cracked
windscreens need to be replaced. Car
owners are however, advised to have
the damage inspected as soon as they
can, and repaired before the damage
or problem become worse and impair
visibility.
In the case of vehicles that
are not fitted with double-layered
windscreen, sudden contact with a
hard object will more often than not
result in the windscreen shattering.
Do not drive with a seriously
cracked windscreen – have it
replaced as soon as possible.
Scratching
Scratching occurs when windshield
wipers moves particles that are stuck
against the surface. These particles
can range from dust, tiny pebbles
and sand, to grime, insects and even
leaves.
At times, badly worn out wipers
that exposes the metal frames is the
culprit for leaving deep scratches and
gashes across the windscreen. These
scratches are distracting and impair
visibility.
Driving in the rain can be quite a challenge, and at
times severely impairs visibility.
EnduroShield AutoGlass is a nanotechnology
solution that repels rain. Turning water into beads
that roll away from the windscreen, it dramatically
improves windscreen visibility.
Unlike conventional repellants that needs
to be periodically reapplied on the windscreen,
EnduroShield’s coating is ultra long lasting and will
last up to 12 months once applied.
“Improved visibility translates into increased
safety while driving, especially in harsh weather
conditions,” said Daniel Wee Tiong How, Manager
of RNC Marketing Sdn Bhd, the sole distributor for
EnduroShield in Malaysia.
Hidden from the naked eye is the fact that the
car windscreen is not as smooth as we assume it is.
Under a microscope, the surface of the windscreen
reveals numerous imperfections in the glass ranging
from jagged to cratered surfaces.
Over time the imperfections in the windscreen
get worse causing dirt and dust particles to become
trapped on the glass easily . Eventually the
windscreen will need to be washed frequently and
this is when water mark stains can easily develop.
Water marks are usually permanent and unsightly.
What EnduroShield essentially does is it seals
the glass to form a protective coating which can be
only be removed by scratching it off or removing the
top layer of the glass.
This is unlike silicone base coatings.
EnduroShield reduces cleaning time by up to 90%
and protects against staining and etching caused by
hard water.
Benefits:
•
Improves vision in wet weather driving
•
Repels rain, dirt, & oil
•
Improves optical clarity & safety
•
Allows easy removal of bugs
•
Reduces frequency of cleaning
•
Protects against water mark stains
•
Improves efficiency of windscreen wipers
•
Simple to apply; on new or old windscreens
•
Lasts up to ten times longer than other coatings
EnduroShield for Glass can be used for all
glass surfaces. For more information, contact RNC

MIROS CONDUCTS
malaysia’s 1st passenger
car outdoor crash test
The Malaysian Institute of Road
Safety Research (MIROS) today
conducted the first full-scale
passenger car outdoor crash test
in the country.
The crash test was conducted
to facilitate research into three
critical areas:
• To ascertain the effectiveness
and level of damage
sustained by the energy
absorbing underrun
protection system/barriers
installed on commercial
vehicles against rear
collisions
• To analyze the safety levels
involving a child seated in
a child safety seat compared to a child
wearing the rear seat belt
• To analyze the degree and type of
casualties sustained by occupants of a
vehicle involved in a rear-end collision
with a parked or stationary commercial
vehicle
Staged at the open-air grounds of the
Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology
(MIAT) at UniKL in Dengkil, Selangor,
the crash test was witnessed by Transport
Minister YB Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat,
officials from the relevant Ministries and
authorities, representatives from the
automotive industry and members of the
media.
Using a two-way propulsion system
designed and built locally by engineers
at MIROS, the test involved a Perodua
Alza mpv with four crash test dummies
as occupants in the place of passengers
(2 adults – 2 children) driven at 80km/h
straight into the back of a stationary haulage
trailer. Seven high-speed cameras (4 inside
the vehicle – 3 external) were used to record
the staged accident.
MIROS Director-General Professor
Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah
said the crash test was a prelude to the
commissioning of a full-fledged crash test
facility being set-up by MIROS scheduled to
be operational by June this year.
The facility, located on a three-acre
site in Melaka, will complement the
institution’s existing Road Engineering and
Environment Research Centre (REER),
Road User Behavioural Change Research
Centre (RUBC), and Vehicle Safety and
Biomechanics Research Centre (VSB),
allowing its researchers to carry out hands-on
and actual high impact road safety studies
and test on all fronts.

AUTOMATED ENFORCEMENT
SYSTEM TO SAVE LIVES
The Malaysian Institute of Road
Safety Research (MIROS) said the
implementation of the Automated
Enforcement System (AES) will have the
potential of saving more than 1,500 lives
lost as a result of road accidents.
The installation of speed cameras is
expected to reduce fatalities by 30% while
cameras positioned in accident-prone
traffic light junctions will drop fatalities
caused by outrunning the red light by an
anticipated 40%.
MIROS has identified 556 accidentprone stretches and 265 traffic light
locations nationwide where the AES
cameras are expected to be operational.
With the AES in place, a high
resolution camera will photograph
motorists and their
vehicle registration number if they
are caught speeding and beating the red
lights, and a summons issued within 48
hours delivered to their home addresses.
Motorists will be warned ahead of entering
the AES zones but the cameras remain
hidden.
According to MIROS DirectorGeneral Professor Dr Ahmad Farhan
Mohd Sadullah, the AES is a proven
and effective approach to reducing road
accidents, casualties and fatalities.
In the United Kingdom, fatalities
reduced by 49% with the AES in place.
Since the French introduced the system
in 2003, fatalities have dropped by 40%
or equivalent to 12,000 lives saved. There
are currently 2,500 cameras throughout
France. Further observation revealed that
approximately 80% of fines were paid
within 45 days.
In the Netherlands, speeding
violations decreased from 40% to 10%
and road accidents reduced by 35%. Since
the AES was installed in Australia in
1997, road accidents caused by speeding
and outrunning the red light reduced
by approximately 24%, traffic violations
dropped by 30% and fatalities decreased
by 34%. In South Korea, 72% of motorists
were found to be driving more slowly even
in areas where the AES were not in place.
Countries like Argentina and Israel
recorded a 40% reduction in rear-end
accidents and a 25% drop in fatalities
at traffic light junctions. In Canada,
observations of red-light running indicate
that the violation rate dropped by around
28% the moment the system became
operational.
Photographic detection devices are also
extensively used 92 countries around the
world including Austria, Belgium, Finland,
Germany, Singapore, South Africa,
Switzerland and Taiwan.
“The AES represents a stronger traffic
control culture and enforcement system
that is expected to deter dangerous
practices among motorists. While the
system meters out summons as a form
of punishment and deterrent, we believe
the long-term and desired outcome will
be to have a motoring society who are
more responsible and uphold the highest
standards of road safety,” said Professor Dr
Ahmad Farhan.
In 2008, 6,527 people were killed on
the road in Malaysia. Motorcycle fatalities
accounted for 58% of the total lives lost
or 3,898 people. Some 1,335 people were
killed in automobile-related accidents.
A total of 25,747 people were injured of
which 8,868 were seriously injured or
hospitalized.
Dr Ahmad Farhan said the benefits of
the AES include:
• Increased safety for all road users
• Increased road safety awareness
• Increased respect for and adherence
to traffic regulations
• Cost effective and a more efficient
approach to enforcement and policing
traffic regulations
He added that implementation of
the AES emphasizes the Government’s
commitment towards implementing a
Safe System Approach that addresses
road safety from all critical angles;
research, education, training, awareness,
legislation, prevention, intervention,
enforcement and the introduction of postaccident measures.
With the AES in place, the
Government is targeting to reduce the
number of fatalities, casualties and road
accidents in Malaysia from its current
road safety index of 3.63 fatalities per
10,000 registered vehicles at of 2008, to 2
fatalities per 10,000 registered vehicles by
the end of 2010.
ACCIDENTS
AND FATALITIES
INVOLVING
LIVESTOCK
In Kuala Terengganu, it was recently
reported that stray livestock were the
reason behind a number of road accidents
in the State.
Stray animals caused a total of160
road accidents in the state in 2009, while
some 28 other cases have been reported
since Jan 1, 2010.
The biggest cause for concern is stray
cattle that caused 136 accidents followed
by 20 accidents involving buffaloes. Goats
caused a total of four accidents. Some 127
accidents involved cars while 36 cases
were motorcyclists crashing into stray
livestock.

TRAFFIC POLICEMAN KILLED
WHILE
ATTENDING TO ACCIDENT
In Kuala Lumpur in February, a car allegedly driven at high-speed by an individual
driving under the influence of alcohol, killed a traffic policeman who was attending to
an accident scene along Jalan Chan Sow Lin in Cheras.
The 50-year-old policeman, sergeant Harjit Singh was manning traffic at an
accident scene involving a six car pile-up, when he was hit at 2.45am.
The impact caused serious injuries to Harjit’s chest, legs and head and he died on
the way to the University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical centre.
HIGHER FINE FOR BUS DRIVERS & COMPANIES
A fine of up to RM500,000 is being
proposed to punish bus drivers and bus
companies responsible to causing fatal
accidents with the setting-up of the new
Public Land Transport Commission on 1
June 2010.
The amount is to serve as a deterrent,
forcing bus drivers and companies, to
take road safety more seriously and to
implement as well as embrace better
safety standards in the light of so many
fatal crashes. The previous maximum
fine imposed by the Commercial Vehicle
Licensing Board (CVLB) – which will be
replaced by the new Commission – was a
mere RM300.
In proposing stiffer penalties, Minister
in the Prime Minister’s Department
Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz told media that it
was a shame that the previous amount
did not reflect the seriousness of the
offence. The law will be amended to
introduce the higher fine.
When operational, the commission will
be responsible for all land transportion;
public, stage and express buses, taxis,
light rail transit (LRT), railway services
and land cargo.

Electric Cars Are Too Quiet & May
Pose As a Safety Threat
In an article published in The L Magazine
in the United States, it was reported that
electric cars are quiet like ninjas but may
be 10 times as deadly.
In a study conducted, it was found
that electric cars are superquiet. This
study found that people can generally
hear conventional cars from 28 feet away,
but can only detect hybrid cars in battery
mode at 7 feet — or one second — away.
To prevent happy-go-lucky new hybrid
owners from indiscriminately crushing
cyclists and passersby, some models are
now being outfitted with artificial motor
noises to alert people of their presence.

Increasing Fines Starts a Debate in
Jeddah
Does increasing the cost of a traffic fine
for paying late constitute usury? This
question has been raised and debated
by Saudi officials, pitting the grand
mufti against a high-ranking Shoura
councilman.
The debate comes following a recent
decision to nearly double the cost of a
traffic ticket if the violator doesn’t pay the
fine by a certain date.
The move spurred a fatwa by Grand
Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh who
said increasing the cost of a ticket over
time is “a form of riba (usury),” which is
prohibited in Islam.

The Debate Over Speed Breakers
In an article published in the
Huddersfield Daily Examiner in the
United Kingdom, a difference of opinion
has occurred in employing measures to
enforce a 20mph zone.
It’s involves creating miniroundabouts, speed breakers and
crossings in Meltham. The Department
of Transport is against speed breakers
but the local council will proceed with its
plans to install speed breakers anyway.
“Driver’s have been trained to drive at
the speed of the geometry of the roads…
If you have a road that’s no different from
any 30mph one, it will not be driven at

To Save Lives
To combat the high rate of accidents
among young drivers, the Department
of Motor Vehicles in the United States
has enacted laws that go into effect this
month to further restrict the rights of 16and 17-year-old drivers.
Starting February 22, 2010, drivers
with a junior license or junior permit will
not be able to have more than one other
person younger than 21 in the car unless
they are accompanied by a parent or
guardian. Previously, they were allowed
two young passengers when driving
unsupervised.

Gps Devices A Distraction And
Threat To Drivers
Transport Canada has identified the use
of GPS devices as a threat to road safety
but after six years of consultation with
industry and safety groups has done
nothing to regulate them, a CBC news
investigation found.
Several provinces, including Ontario

cut down on driver distraction and have
made it illegal to program a GPS while a
car is moving.
According to Canadian statistics,
driver distraction accounts for up to 50
per cent of car accidents.

The State Supreme Court in
Southern Carolina, the United States, is
hearing arguments about a controversial

Despite that, he’s still not in favor
of the government forcing riders to put
on a helmet. That includes the Myrtle
Beach, which passed a helmet ordinance

Over 17,000 Die in Nigerian Road
Crashes
More than 17,000 people died in about
31,000 road accidents across Nigeria
between 2007 and 2009, according to
official statistics released on Sunday
by the federal government road safety
agency.
More than 73,000 were injured in
these accidents during the period under
review, said the Federal Road Safety
Commission (FRSC), which added that it
hopes to achieve a 50% reduction in road
traffic fatality over last year’s figure of
5,690.
Undisciplined, reckless driving,
illiteracy, bad road networks and poor
vehicle maintenance are often cited as
reasons for road crashes and fatalities in
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation.
