It w a s found, last year, that the c o m m i t t e e was appointed too late In term. The week w h i c h preceded the etoalng d a y for contributions w a s marked by and lectures should be appointed much earlier, and contributions called for Immediately. But e v e n t h i s attempt at improvement will he negatived unless the undergiails. evince some e n t h u s i a s m In the a c t i v e spade work that precedes publication. There a r e still those w h o think that no one can poaaibly w r i t e a s o n g unless he Is a member of t h e Faculty of Arts. Vet last year's prise Grinning s o n g s were both w r i t t e n by nien of another Faculty, s h o u l d a n y o n e with an idea for a s o n g And himself unable to put It into words, t h e n be should forward It t o t h e committee. They will give the task t o o n e of our recognised songsters. It is very rarely that a fresher contributes a song. This, n o doubt, is d u e to the freshers' Ignorance of the requirements of the song-book. It Is their d u t y t o elicit information from •enior men and women. The Council, too. could help in this matter by distributing to freshers the unsold coplea of previous yearn. This year w e should pursue a vigoro u s c a m p a i g n of propaganda. Presid e n t s of Faculties, by speeches and notices, should endeavor t o a r o u s e their f e l l o w s from the lethargy that g r o w s heavier year by year. —( Kx-Committee-man.) THE REGIMENT Leaves from History u. T h e (ireat War plays a very large part in the traditions of the S y d n e y I'niverslty Kegltnent. ls»th by reason of t h e large number of i t s members w h o took p.-rt In it. a n d a l s o liecause the Regiment's d e s t i n i e s were shaped during the difficult y e a r s Just after war by a g r o u p of officers w h o had w o n distinction o n t h e other side of the world. T h i s continuity w a s plainly seen in the Ouard of Honour turned out for t h e Prince of W a l e s during his visit t o the I'niverslty in 1S21. Tbe Ouard consisted of more t h a n -'JO e x offlcers of the A.I F.. and in its ranks w e r e very m a n y former m e m b e r s of t h e Regiment. Men w h o had the interests of the Regiment at heart, however, had a difficult task before ' h e m w h e n they set about building u p t h e Corps in the days immediately a f t e r t h e war. T h e military organisation left m u c h t o be desired, equipment w a s insufficient, and several t i m e s n o facilities were offered for holding the Annual Camp, which Is by far the m o s t Important f e a t u r e of the military life of t h e Regiment. It is t h e n that t h e most important part of the training is done anil the Regiment really f e e l s that It is a n entity, a c t u a t e d by a c o m m o n spirit and a c o m m o n aim. T h e m a s s of s t u d e n t s had t o be assimilated, offic e r s and n o n - c o m m i s s i o n e d officers had t o IN- trained, a n d t h e Regiment had t o develop t h a t continuity and spirit w h i c h is essential for success. As w e h a v e said, most of the officers at t h i s period were returned soldiers, hut gradually the Regiment lost t h e s e through promotion and other causes, and. a t present, nearly all the officers have been provided by the Regiment Itself. T h e C o r p s Is f o r t u n a t e indeed in h a v i n g been commanded by a s u c c e s sion of g e n t l e m e n w h s h a v e g i v e n their -Whole heart t o improving it i n e v e r y w a y . and o n e c a n n o t over e s t i m a t e t h e s e r v i c e s rendered by Colonels of the Regiment. It is an indisputed f a c t that e a c h y ea r the efficiency of t h e Corps has s h o w n a n improvement on the previous year, a n d correspondingly, the men have found their work more interesting and their sojourns In camp m o r e enjoyable. A s the m e m b e r s developed more keenness, competitions negan t o play a large part. The Regiment p o s s e s s e s many valuable presentation trophies, soase of w h i c h date back t o the very early d a y s of the Corps. The sport of rills sturn urally o c c u p i e s a very large t h e s e a c t i v i t i e s and several c u p s are competed for. There are also c o m p e t i t i o n s for skill w i t h other arms, and p e r h a p s the keenest rivalry of all is s h o w n in t h e c o m p e t i t i o n s for general efficiency between the various c o m p a n i e s and p l a t o o n s w h i c h m a k e up t b e Regiment. m work h a s a l w a y s been •!».'
