LIFE AT KMUTT
Campus
Established in 1960, as Thonburi
Technical Institute, presently KMUTT
has 3 campuses and 1 city center.
1. Bangmod Campus
KMUTT Bangmod Campus is
around 45 minutes drive from Suvarnabhumi Airport. This Campus is located in
‘Thonburi’, formerly the capital of
Thailand. Half a century ago, this area
was full of orange orchards, so-called
‘Som Bangmod’ and it was remote and
underdeveloped. However, as KMUTT’s
yearly enrolments increased, the area
soon became a new satellite city with
increasing shops, houses, apartment
buildings, restaurants, cinema houses,
department stores, and places for
entertainment, but the cost of living is
still very affordable.
Presently, Bangmod campus is
the main administrative campus, which
homes of about 17,000 students and
2,000 academic staff members and
personnels. The area of 135 Rai
(54 acres) includes 9 faculties / schools;
Faculty of Engineering (FoE), Faculty
of Industrial Education and Technology
(EDU), Faculty of Science (SC),
Graduate School of Management and
Innovation (GMI), Institute of Field
Robotics (FiBO), School of Energy,
Environment and Materials (SEEM),
School of Information Technology (SIT),
School of Liberal Arts (SoLA) and the
Joint Graduate School of Energy and
10
International Students Handbook
Environment (JGSEE).
2. Bangkhuntien Campus (BKT)
This campus is located in
Bangkhuntien district, Bangkok about
20 km. away from the Bangmod campus,
with total area of 200 Rai (80 acres).
This campus includes two schools:
School of Architecture and Design
(SoA+D) and School of Bioresources
and Technology (SBT); and two scientific
institutes namely Pilot Plant Development
and Training Institute (PDTI) and
Industrial Park Center (IPC). The two
institutions cooperatively work to
support each other in both the
production of graduates in needed fields
of science and technology and in the
development of technology within the
same area. Bangkhuntien is therefore
the “Research Institute and Industrial
Park” of KMUTT.
3. Rajaburi Campus
This campus is located in
Rajaburi province with total area of
1,150 Rai (460 acres).
The site is
highly suitable for teaching and
learning, conducting research, providing
academic services in the area, and
disseminating
knowledge
about
technology and arts. The campus can be
developed into the country’s “Western
Educational Park / Industrial Park”.
The Information Technology program
has started from 1996. The philosophy
and method of teaching is with
significant input from Massachusettes
Institute of Technology (MIT), U.S.A.
4. Bangkok CODE (Community
of Desirable Environment) - KMUTT
City Center
Bangkok CODE is an architecture and designs incubators/park,
incubating architects and designers
similar to the KMUTT Industrial Park
incubating technology-based SMEs.
In the era of flexible learning,
it requires the higher educational
institutions to be multifunctional, more
friendly and ‘relevant’. The connections between education, professionals, society and individuals have
to be established and strengthened.
invention and networking is proposed to
make use of the opportunity.
The
Bangkok CODE, King Mongkut’s
University of Technology Thonburi
City Center focuses on activities for
human resource development. Aiming
at producing world-class standard
professionals, the center will be a place
for both local and international professional interactions.
Rather than solely conforming
to pre-established standards, the center
supports the freedom of individuals and
their innovations in order to prepare
them for the ever-changing, dynamic
world.

LIVING IN THAILAND
Do and Don’t
Here are just a few, but the
most important things.
The nation: The national
anthem is played twice a day,
typically at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.).
Everyone is expected to stand whilst
it is playing to show respect to the
nation.
The Monarchy:
Thai
people have a deep, traditional
reverence for the Royal Family, and
visitors should be careful to show
respect for the King, the Queen
and the Royal Family. You should
never insult or joke about the king
or royal family.
Religion: Visitors should
dress neatly in all religious shrines.
They should never go topless, or in
shorts, hot pants or other unsuitable
attire. It is acceptable to wear shoes
when walking around the compound
of a Buddhist temple, but not inside
the chapel where the principal
Buddha image is kept. Each Buddha
image, large or small, ruined or
not, is regarded as a sacred object.
Never climb onto one to take
a photograph or do anything which
might indicate a lack of respect.
Buddhist monks are forbidden to
touch or be touched or to accept
anything from hand to hand by a
woman. If a woman has to give
anything to a monk, a monk will
28
International Students Handbook
lay down his handy cloth then she
can put the things on, alternately
she can hands it to a man, who then
presents it. Greeting:
Thais
don’t
normally shake hands when they
greet one another, but instead press
the palms together in a prayer-like
gesture called a wai. Generally, a
younger person wais an elder, who
returns it.
Gestures: Thais regard
the head as the highest part of
the body, literally and figuratively.
Therefore, avoid touching people
on the head and try not to point
your feet at people or an object. It is
considered very rude. Shoes should
be removed when entering a private
Thai home.
Affection: Public displays of
affection between men and women
are frowned upon by Thai people.
Don’t kiss, fondle or express in
sexual senses in public places.
Tipping: Services in Bangkok
are not expensive. It is not necessary
here to tip taxi drivers, and other
but always appreciated. However,
it is customary to leave a small tip
in nice restaurant, about 20-40
baht. Many restaurants include a
10% service charge, please check
the bill.
Visa
All international students
studying in Thailand are
required to act in accordance
with the laws of Thailand, in
particular those concerning
visa matters. Meanwhile,
they also have responsibility
for all visa performance.
The acceptance letter from the
university will enable you to get a
visa from Thai Embassy. The type of
visa you need is a Non-immigrant:
Education class or so-called NonED. There are two types of visa on
your choices.
- Single-entry visa. The date
printed on visa label is the date
which you must use to enter Thailand.
It is not the date that you are
allowed to stay. After your arrival,
your period of stay is determined
by the Immigration Office at the
checkpoint. Normally, it will be
valid only for 90 days when you
first enter to Thailand.
Please carefully check the
date on the stamp, as it is the date
which you should get an extension
of your staying period.
Within these 90 days, you
have to register and pay tuition fee
at the university. Consequently,
at least 7 days in advance before
your visa expiration, you have to
submit a copy of your passport
(personal page and visa stamped
page) to IA in order to issue a
confirmation letter about your study
and registration. Then, you can use
the confirmation letter to apply, in
person, for visa extension at the
Office of Immigration Bureau. In
addition, you need to prepare extra
documents upon the requests from
the Immigration Office. Basically, IA
will prepare an extension documents
and a map for you.
This time, you should be
granted a visa for one-year stay or
until the rest of your study period.
The visa extension for the following
year is also in the same technical
procedures.
In case you want to travel
out of the country, you need to
apply for a re-entry permit before
traveling. If not, you can not hold
Non-ED anymore. You will come
back to Thailand with a new type of
visa (a tourist-visa: TR), then again
you need to prepare traveling out
to apply for Non-ED at the Thai
Embassy abroad.
- Multiple-entry visa. This type
of visa allows you to travel in and out
of the country several times, until the
date of visa on the label is expired,
without the need of a re-entry permit.
Every time you leave and return, your
period of stay is extended for 90 days
or as shown on the immigration stamp
upon each return. To extend this type of
visa, you have to leave and return before
each 90 days is over.
You should be careful, if you
extend your period of stay with
International Students Handbook
29
the same method of a single-entry
visa, your multiple-entry visa will
automatically change to a singleentry visa.
Please note that if you
stay longer than the date
shown in the immigration
stamp, you need to pay
penalty fee 500 a day.
The 90 Days Notification
At the checkpoint entry in
Thailand, the 90 Days Notification
card is tagged into your passport.
You need to notify, either in
person or by posting, the Immigration
Bureau every 90 days and inform
them your current address. It’s a
very simple form you have to fill in
with free of charge. Later, you will
get a slip for the next appointment
date.
Again, the next notification
is also in the same technically
procedures.
Since the visa processes may
be subjected to changes by the
Immigration Bureau, we recommend
you to find out the most updated
information from the Office of
Immigration Bureau at
www.immigration.go.th.
