CMYK ANNA NAGAR TIMES KILP AUK - PURASAI EDITION KILPAUK www.annanagartimes.in September 20 - 26, 2014 Vol. 13, No. 23 CMRL builds temporary bus lane, pedestrian walkway near Ripon Building By Our Staff Reporter Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is in the process of constructing a 9-meter-wide bus lane and a one-and-a-half meter pedestrian walkway in front of Ripon Building, Poonamallee High Road, to facilitate construction of the underground Metro station beneath the road without affecting traffic and pedestrian movement in the stretch. Buses coming on Poonamallee High Road from Kilpauk towards Central Station will soon use this lane to reach Central instead of Poonamallee High Road. Workers of CMRL have begun breaking the pavement near the entry and exit points of Ripon Building. Buses are already routed through the railway campus. A foot overbridge has already been erected at Central Station for pedestrians. A senior official of CMRL said that the underground station will be 35m below the road level. It is a temporary arrangement as traffic is heavy on this stretch. This will be the arrangement for at least for the next two to three years until Metro construction work is complete. The right side of Ripon Building is one of the five entry and exit points of the Central Metro Rail station, the largest among the Metro stations in the city, to be spread across 70,000 sq. m. It will go under Poonamallee High Road in front of Ripon Building and Chennai Central. The initiative along the south Indian coast has been a volunteer-driven, public participatory program, aiming to remove trash from beaches, rivers and ecologicallysensitive underwater sites. This year’s chapter hopes to cover up to 350 kilometers along the coastal belt of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Pondicherry, with over 4,500 volunteers, besides public participants, a press release said. Volunteers will walk up the entire allotted block to collect debris and will fill out a trash data sheet. The volunteers will be fitted out with a clean-up kit for safe handling and disposal. The information gathered will guide and influence governments, corporations, local bodies and industries to develop smart solutions to tackle the marine debris problem. Data shows that there is a reduction of trash along Chennai and Pondicherry coastal areas by about 30 per cent since 2009, the year the campaign started, it added. Those willing to volunteer can call 80569 61823 or register on www.imfchen nai.org. Agriculture officials exhort residents to grow coconut trees By Our Staff Reporter Officials of Agriculture Department have exhorted residents to grow coconut trees in their premises, as part of ‘Clean Chennai Green Chennai’ drive. The Department has a coconut tree farm in Arul Nagar in Milk Colony, Madhavaram. The farm is spread over an extent of 11 acres. D. Vijayakumar, assistant director of the Department, said residents mostly consumes tender coconuts sourced from Pollachi and Andhra Pradesh. SADANAND IN RIGHTEOUSNESS ARRAYED The September issue of Reader’s Digest gave me three handouts gratis, one of which is ‘Speeches That Changed The World’, the speakers being Nelson Mandela,Martin Luther King, our own Mahatma Gandhi and Indira Gandhi, Gorbachev,Woodrow Wilson (one time President of USA during the First World War). All the speeches make good reading and take one to the years of yore when most of the present population of the world at large had been buffeted by one terrible word ‘WAR’. Martin Luther King of Atlanta in U.S.Aled a march of thousands to Washington DC to demonstrate the commitment of the American people of all creeds and religions to seek equal rights in every facet of American society. On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, in one of the greatest speeches of the twentieth century, he said, “Five score years ago a great American in whose symbolic shadow we stand today signed the emancipation proclamation. The momentous decree came as a beacon of light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity. But, one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free......... I have a dream that one day, on the rd hills of Georgia, the sons of the former slaves and the sons of the former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood”. He was a great dreamer and today the son of an African father is the President of USA for a second term. The colourful people of USA are not now averse to judging a person by his intellectual package sans his epidermal status. Viva USA! Shop owners penalized for selling consumables at more than MRP Shop owners inside CMBT bus terminus were penalized to the tune of Rs. 2,500 each for selling consumables and beverages above the maximum retail price (MRP) during a surprise crackdown launched by the officials of State Legal Metrology Department (SLMD) on Sept. 18. S. Krishnamurthy, a social activist and resident of New Avadi Road, who has filed petitions on MRP violations said more raids should be conducted to curb MRP violations. Shop owners often go scot-free despite selling all items above the MRP. The most affected are commuters used to travel in buses and trains. Most of the shop owners in railway stations and bus terminals are charging above the MRP. Consumers can complain about violations by calling officials of SLMD in 2432 1438. Bose, though they criticized the ideas and not the person. The fact that Bal Gangadhar Tilak (radical) had inspired Bose while Gandhiwas into the tradition of Gopal Krishna Gokhale (moderate) became much clearer at this point of time. Nehru and Bose worked closely during these years. They were both socialisticwhereas Rajaji, Rajendra Prasad and Sardar Patel belonged to the right wing. Between Bose and Nehru, Congress stayed as a political body with a socialism agenda since these two (or someone close to them) held the post of Congress President continuously. The right wing of the Congress had no chance against the combined influence of Nehru and Bose. It was in 1927 that Bose moved the “Poorna Swaraj” (Total Freedom) resolution, but it was easily defeated by the othersbut it was later adopted in a different form in 1942. Gandhi tactfully got Nehru elected as President after this event in 1927. The historic Dandi Salt March of 1930 was praised by Bose, drawing parallels to and comparing it with Napoleon’s Historic March on Paris. He said that, just like the March of Napoleon, Gandhi’s march would change the course of history, which is exactly what happened. Interestingly, Nehru was vocally apprehensive about this move. For the First Round Table Conference chaired by His Majesty King George V, the Congress was not invited. In the Second Round Table Conference (1931), however, Gandhi was invited as the sole representative of Congress. He attended the conference with Mrs. Sarojini Naidu and turned it into a minority rights issue with B. R. Ambedkar, instead of representing the larger goal of freedom. Bose was disappointed, to say the least, on two fronts - Gandhi’s stand on minority issues and his failure to speak boldly for freedom. After this incident, Bose visited many European countries as he was suffering from severe mental depression. He met Benito Mussolini in Italy, got married in Germany, and was influenced by the historic leader of Italy, Garibaldi, who was famous for his quote:‘I offer neither pay, nor quarters, nor food; I offer only hunger, thirst, forced marches, battles, and death. Let him who loves his country with his heart, and not merely with his lips, follow me!’ This, coupled with the victory of Garibaldi against the French, had a tremendous influence on Bose. He returned to India in 1938 and, though he had deep respect for Gandhi, he criticized his ways, chief among them being on modernizationwhich was much more prevalent in Europe. Gandhi with his chakra seemed too old fashioned to him now. Bose remarked, ‘We have to live in the present and adapt ourselves to modern conditions. The days of the bullock cart are gone forever…’ (To be continued) RNI Regn. The chenda is a cylindrical percussion instrument played in temple festivals as an accompaniment. S. Sudhir Babu (native of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh) and his accomplice Bharath Kumar were arrested last week on charges of cheating job seekers’ money to the tune of Rs. 50 lakh. According to the police, the duo collected money mostly from marine engineering students with an assurance that they will get placement in a private marine academy. They also duped them by even sending them appointment orders with the help of an employment consultancy firm based in Delhi. Many fell prey to the fake appointment orders and deposited sums to the tune of lakh of rupees into the bank account as requested by the two. In a matter of time, the job seekers clearly observed that they were being cheated. Central Crime Branch Police are investigating the case.
