YMCA OF THE BRANDYWINE VALLEY Nonprofit Organization U.S. Postage PAID West Chester, PA Permit No. 335 One East Chestnut Street West Chester, PA 19380 STRIDE 2012 Annual Report Helping Boys Build Character and Healthy Living Habits For the more than 700 girls, 200 boys, and 1,000 coaches and running buddies who crossed the finish line at the Girls on the Run 5K and STRIDE Challenge on December 2, 2012, it wasn’t just about running. It was a joyous celebration of the self-confidence and sense of achievement that comes from making a commitment to leading a healthy life, working toward a goal, and caring for others. STRIDE was started in 2010 by the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley to help boys in grades three to five build character and healthy living habits. The program uses interactive activities to help the boys feel good about themselves, improve physical fitness, and build positive relationships. Social issues, such as dealing with bullies, conflict resolution, saying no to drugs, and handling peer pressure are woven into each afterschool session. “STRIDE lets boys burn off extra energy in a non-competitive way,” says STRIDE coach Elizabeth Guest. “Organized sports are so competitive and turn off a lot of kids. STRIDE is about being your personal best.” YMCA of the Brandywine Valley YMCA OF THE BRANDYWINE VALLEY BRANDYWINE YMCA 295 Hurley Road Coatesville, PA 19320 610-380-9622 JENNERSVILLE YMCA 880 West Baltimore Pike West Grove, PA 19390 610-869-9622 KENNETT AREA YMCA 101 Race Street Kennett Square, PA 19348 610-444-9622 WEST CHESTER AREA YMCA 605 Airport Road West Chester, PA 19380 610-431-9622 OSCAR LASKO YOUTH PROGRAM CENTER One East Chestnut Street West Chester, PA 19380 610-696-9622 ASSOCIATION OFFICE One East Chestnut Street West Chester, PA 19380 610-643-9622 OCTORARA YMCA PROGRAM CENTER 104 Highland Road, Suite 1 Atglen, PA 19310 610-593-9622 www.ymcabwv.org YMCA MISSION: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Strengthening Community, Together ANNUAL REPORT 2012 3 Strengthening Community, Together DEAR FRIENDS, Thanks to you - our members, volunteers, donors and community partners - the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley is making a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of children, adults and families in Chester County. Every day, kids in our child care, educational, sports and camp programs discover who they are and what they can achieve. Families find a place where they can share interests and deepen relationships. Adults find a supportive community that encourages balance and wellbeing. And, our neighbors in need receive the support they need to be healthy, connected and secure. Thanks to the generous support of our Y partners and friends, the Kennett Area Y is undergoing a much-needed expansion and facility upgrade. Originally planned for 5,000 people, the Kennett Y is now home to more than 12,000 kids, families and adults seeking support, connection and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The Kennett Y is the very heart of a diverse and growing community and is consistently recognized among the top Ys in the nation. The $3.2 million expansion will meet the needs of the Kennett community with an expanded wellness center; a new family recreation area; a warm-water aquatic center; a holistic health studio and additional space for arts and humanities programs. 2 WWW.YMCABWV.ORG In 2012, more than 18,000 individuals received financial assistance totaling nearly $3.0 million to learn, grow and thrive through the Y. As the needs of our community changed, we responded with new expansion and renewal projects that will enhance the lives of countless kids, adults and families in our Kennett and Jennersville communities. • We broke ground on a much-needed facility expansion at our Kennett Area Y to better serve a growing and culturally diverse community. Thanks to a successful capital campaign led by W. Thomas Musser, volunteers for the Kennett Y raised more than $2.8 million to expand our existing Y by 25%, adding a new, warm-water pool, an arts and humanities studio, a family activity center and other much-needed renovations. We look forward to celebrating our grand reopening in the summer of 2013. • We identified the need for more creative and recreational space at our Jennersville Y to increase access to the performing arts and expand opportunities for wellness for more youth and families. Enthusiastic support for the expansion by longtime Y volunteers Carol Ware and the Smithson family led to the start of a $3.75 million capital campaign. The campaign will fund a new family wellness center, a stateof-the-art wellness center, a center for arts and recreation with a performing arts stage, an outdoor plaza and other enhancements. We continued our commitment to the children entrusted to our care by initiating the Stewards of Children™ sexual abuse prevention program throughout our Association. By the end of the year, more than 1,200 full- and part-time staff were trained to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. We will train our Y volunteers in 2013 and work with local organizations to take this critical training to the communities we serve. Throughout this annual report, you will read about the life-changing power of the Y when we all work together. Strengthening community is our cause and we’re grateful that you’re here for, and with, us. Denise L. Day President & CEO John A. Featherman, III Board Chair STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY, TOGETHER ANNUAL REPORT 2012 5 TOGETHER we stand for YOUTH DEVELOPMENT because all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. When Coach Rick suggested that Gavin play basketball with his 9 and 10 year-old peers, his mom, Jeanelle, took some convincing. Gavin was born without hands or lower legs, and moving up to the next age group meant playing against physically larger kids on a court with 10-foot hoops. She shouldn’t have worried. Gavin quickly showed his teammates that he was there to make an impact on the court, playing a fearless defense that earned him the nickname, “the bull.” What Gavin didn’t realize was that he was making an even more important impact off the court. “Gavin is a natural athlete, but he has to move his legs faster and harder than anyone on the team,” said his coach, a Y volunteer. “His teammates know how hard he works and that makes them want to try harder and be better, too. They want him on their team.” Gavin’s friendly, easy-going personality quickly puts kids at ease. “Gavin doesn’t realize that he is an ambassador for kids with physical limitations,” said Coach Rick. “He just wants to be treated like any other kid.” At the Y’s annual basketball tournament, Gavin’s teammates wanted him to have a chance to score. Gavin got the ball, drove down the lane and took a shot. When the ball dropped in, both teams broke out with cheers and applause. “It was a great day for Gavin and for the team,” said Coach Rick. Y staff and volunteers work together to nurture the potential of every child – on the playing field, at the pool, on the stage, at camp and after school. At the Y, thousands of children and teens participate in supportive, characterbuilding programs where they learn the Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. 4 WWW.YMCABWV.ORG “Gavin doesn’t realize that he is an ambassador for kids with physical limitations,” said Coach Rick. “He just wants to be treated like any other kid.” STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY, TOGETHER ANNUAL REPORT 2012 “Thanks to the Y, my kids will grow up in a household that teaches healthy practices.” TOGETHER we stand for HEALTHY LIVING because wellness in spirit, mind and body strengthens and enriches our lives. Joy is a busy mom with three young daughters. In 2011 she suffered a back injury that left her temporarily paralyzed. Following surgery and rehab, her doctor recommended that she lose weight as part of her recovery. Determined to get healthy for herself and her family, Joy started to walk outside using a cane. “That first day, I walked around my block, just a quarter of a mile. It took me 25 minutes,” said Joy. “I weighed 270 pounds and I knew I needed to make a change.” Joy turned to the Brandywine Y for help. She learned how to modify her diet and began to exercise every day. As she got stronger, Joy began working with a trainer, adding core strengthening exercises and weights and by joining the Y’s Resolution Revolution healthy living challenge. After nine months of hard work and determination, Joy had lost 76 pounds, regained full strength in her legs and feet and set a new goal for herself – to run a 5K. 6 WWW.YMCABWV.ORG 7 “I ran my first 5K in 42 minutes, but I wanted to be faster” said Joy. She kept training and brought her time down to 28 minutes. Now, Joy has a new goal. On April 28, she’ll run a half marathon - 13.1 miles. Since joining the Y, Joy has lost a total of 105 pounds. “Just two years ago, I could never have imagined exercising or running at all,” said Joy. “I just have so much energy and my kids are learning about making healthy choices, thanks to the Y.” Joy remembers how difficult it was to have the courage to start exercising and wants to give back by organizing a walking club at the Y. “I want people to realize that they can make big changes in their health just by walking and having a desire to move.” Soon, “Moving with Joy” will be a new healthy living program offered at the Y. At the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley, we have a responsibility to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of our neighbors. As a result, thousands of youth, adults and families in Chester County are receiving the support, guidance and resources to lead healthier, fuller lives. STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY, TOGETHER 9 TOGETHER we stand for SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY because giving back and supporting our neighbors helps move communities forward. They come anonymously to the table. Unemployed fathers. Moms struggling to make ends meet. The homeless. What started as an idea to share extra summer fruits and vegetables with other Y members quickly became a lifeline for many whose lives have been upended by financial hardship. When Darrin was approached about building a “sharing table” at the Jennersville Y, he quickly agreed. A local business donated the lumber and Darrin and his employees gave their time. A camp counselor volunteered to paint the table with inspirational messages. “I’m fortunate enough to be able to make a contribution through my construction company,” said Darrin. “But it’s the dozens and dozens of people who keep the table filled who are more important.” Throughout the summer, the table was filled with food during the day and emptied during the night. When the summer ended, there was an expectation that the table would close. Then, boots, coats and other items of clothing began to appear. Canned goods and diapers replaced the tomatoes and cucumbers of the summer. And, each evening, people would quietly come to the table. “The sharing table has become a living, breathing part of the Y that has helped so many people ...” “The sharing table has become a living, breathing part of the Y that has helped so many people,” said Darrin. “We’re connecting with the community in a way that I could never have imagined.” The difference the Y makes in the lives of children, families and adults in Chester County is tangible and real. Thanks to the support of our members, staff, volunteers and community partners, we have the resources to bring about meaningful and lasting change in our community. 8 STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY, TOGETHER ANNUAL REPORT 2012 FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, FOR HEALTHY LIVING, FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PARTNERS FOR CHANGE At the Y, we believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together. Every day, the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley works side-by-side with our neighbors and community partners to help strengthen the foundations of our community. Sports helps kids get active, learn teamwork and build self-confidence, but many disadvantaged children cannot afford costly equipment. The Believe and Achieve Foundation donated hundreds of gently used pieces of sports equipment for the youth in our YPAL program. Members of the West Chester Y teamed with Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc. to prepare nearly 100 prosthetic legs for donation to the Physicians for Peace Walking Free program. Through this program, amputee victims in poor nations have a new opportunity to become independent and productive. Without financial assistance, the high-quality preschool programs provided by the Y would be out of reach for many families. We’re grateful that Susquehanna Bank and other area businesses are supporting this critical tuition assistance program by directing their state tax dollars to our Y through the Pennsylvania Educational Tax Credit program (EITC). Thousands of kids and families participated in Healthy Kids Day events throughout our Association in April. The day is designed to inspire a lifetime love of physical activity. Healthy Kids Day is presented locally by Krapf Bus Companies. Thanks to a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation, campers at our Brandywine Y and Coatesville community camp participated in daily literacy-building activities to help fight the learning loss that many children experience during the summer. This past summer, volunteers from Partners in Outreach generously donated swim suits, flip flops and towels to youth in our Y programs. 2012 YMCA Fast Facts Members (as of 12/31/12) Members Program Participants Total 49,697 7,139 56,836 10 WWW.YMCABWV.ORG Youth Program Participants Summer Camp Youth Sports Swim Lessons 3,057 8,056 4,536 Supporters Policy Volunteers 217 Program Volunteers 3,696 YMCA Staff 1,658 Preschool and School Age Childcare School Districts Served 9 School Age Childcare Sites 36 Children Served 3,640 11 COMMUNITY LEADERS Receive the Y’s Highest Honors Leo Parsons Receives the Huston Distinguished Service Award YMCA of the Brandywine Valley is pleased to honor Leo Parsons with the Huston Distinguished Service Award. Leo’s service to the Y began in 1994 as a volunteer with the capital campaign to expand the downtown West Chester facility. Leo then served on the board of the West Chester Y where he chaired the major gifts committee for the capital campaign to build the new Y on Airport Road and served for two years as Board Chair. After participating in a Good Kids Campaign, Leo found his passion – giving kids and families the opportunity to experience the Y, regardless of ability to pay. For more than a decade, Leo and his wife, Maryanne, have chaired the West Chester Y’s Good Kids Dinner. Leo shared his passion for the Y with employees of his company, CTDI, who also serve on Y Boards and volunteer for Y programs. Leo has served on the Association Board of the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley for the past nine years, and led the Board as Chair from 2009 to 2011. We’re grateful to Leo for his many years of dedicated service to the Y, his leadership and vision and his unwavering commitment to the children and families in our community. The YMCA’s Huston Distinguished Service Award recognizes the effort and achievement of the YMCA’s most special friends and emphasizes the need for community service by all our citizens. Recipients of this award have set a standard of leadership that others may follow. The Smithson Family Receives the Fulton Bank Receives the Community The Smithson family’s legacy of support was inspired by their mother, Priscilla, and her service to the Y - first as a teen leader of the Y’s Tri-Hi Club and later as a member of the Jennersville Y Board. In 1999, Priscilla and her husband Bob established an endowment to create a Y camp for underprivileged youth in Oxford. Now, the next generation has stepped forward with their support for the new Smithson Center for Arts and Recreation at the Jennersville Y. Hundreds of children in Southern Chester County will have the opportunity to explore their creativity and reach their potential. For more than a decade, Fulton Bank has been a deeply involved advocate for the Y. From sponsoring and volunteering at Girls on the Run events, to supporting our 7th Grade Initiative, to helping kids stay safe in the water, Fulton Bank has been a steadfast partner. Fulton’s staff gives generously of their time to serve on our Boards of Advisors and Association Board. We’re grateful to our friends at Fulton Bank for all they do for our Y and for the community. Jody Giardina Service to Youth Award The YMCA’s Jody Giardina Service to Youth Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose dedication and effort have made a significant and positive difference in the lives of children in our community. Partner Award The YMCA’s Community Partner Award recognizes an organization or group that has demonstrated a commitment to the YMCA’s mission and values and has partnered with or supported the Y in outreach initiatives that strengthen the foundations of our community. STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY, TOGETHER Thanks To Our DONORS THE Y IS ACCESSI BLE TO EVERYONE In 2012, 2,473 individuals, organizations and foundations made donations to the YMCA Good Kids Annual Support Campaign totaling $1,186,181.
