Welcome to the Olympic village
Lake Placid: Winter Sports Capital of the World
Set in the grandeur of the Adirondacks, one of the
last great wilderness areas of the East, the Lake
Placid region of Essex County offers visiting nature
lovers an experience filled with arts, history, education and sports.
Although the village recently celebrated its centennial and visitors began traveling here around the
1880s, it was the Olympic Winter Games in 1932
that catapulted this small picturesque village onto
the international stage. Years later in 1980, Lake
Placid once again hosted the Games. This time, all
eyes were on Lake Placid when speed skater Eric
Heiden won five gold medals, and the U.S Men’s
Hockey Team beat the Soviet squad in what was
called the “Miracle On Ice.”
Since the Olympic Games, Lake Placid has
remained a vital part of winter sports history.
Countless World Cups in luge, bobsled and skiing
have taken place at the former Olympic venues.
Events like “Stars on Ice,” the first-ever Winter
Goodwill Games and other events make Lake Placid
the place to be in the winter months.
Nearby Whiteface Mountain in the town of
Wilmington, home of the Olympic downhill events,
is open daily from late November to mid-April. With
dozens of trails and the steepest vertical drop in the
East, Whiteface is a premier ski destination.
The other Olympic venues are open year-round
as well. Take a bobsled ride at the Olympic Sports
Complex and race down the same track used during
the Olympics at speeds up to 50 miles an hour.
Watch world-class athletes as they train at the
Olympic Jumping Complex and Freestyle Park.
Visit the 1932 and 1980 Lake Placid Winter
Olympic Museum located in the Olympic Center.
Ice rinks, located in the Olympic Center, and the
Sheffield Speed Skating Oval are open daily for public skating.
Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobile trails are endless. Take a dog sled ride on Mirror
Lake or ride down Mirror Lake’s toboggan chute.
Go ice fishing on one of the many lakes and ponds
in Essex County (contact the town of North Elba
office or the New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation for details).
Visitors will be delighted with shop-lined Main
Street. Peruse the shops filled with antiques, homemade chocolates, locally made clothing and other
Adirondack gifts.

Lake Placid’s Olympic venues
Lake Placid
Below is a list of the 1932 and 1980 Lake Placid
Olympic venues, which are operated by the New
York State Olympic Regional Development
Authority (ORDA). Schedules are provided. For
more information, contact ORDA at (518) 5231655 or log on to the Olympic Authority’s Web site

The Olympic Center
The Olympic Center includes four ice surfaces:
the 1932 Rink Jack Shea Arena, the 1980 Rink
Herb Brooks Arena (home of the “Miracle on Ice”)
and two practice areas, the Lussi and USA rinks. It
is a world-class year-round training facility for
speedskating, figure skating and hockey. The
Olympic Center is also available for recreational
skating, conventions and concerts. In 1994, the
1932 & 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic
Museum opened in the Olympic Center.
The Olympic Speedskating Oval
This outdoor oval is one of three refrigerated
400-meter skating ovals in the United States and
the site of Eric Heiden’s record five gold medals in
1980. It is open during the winter months —
December through March — for competitive training, events, and recreational skating.
Olympic Jumping Complex
This complex is home to winter and summer ski
jumping and freestyle skiing. The large (120-meter
K point) and normal (90-meter K point) jumps
were used for the 1980 Olympic Games. In addition, there are three smaller hills used for development programs. A combination of ceramic tiles and
plastic mats allow the jumpers to train and compete
in the non-snow months. The Kodak Sports Park,
completed in 1988, is America’s foremost water
ramp training and competitive facility for freestyle
aerial skiing. Summer aerialists land in a heated
750,000-gallon pool. In winter, launching ramps
and a steep landing hill are utilized for training and
world-class events in freestyle aerials.

Verizon Sports Complex in the fall of 2001. In the
fall of 2006, the name went back to the Olympic
Sports Complex. The attractions include the combined bobsled/luge/skeleton track which was completed in January 2000, a 50-kilometer (31-mile)
cross-country skiing network built for the 1980
Winter Games, and a biathlon target range. Athletes
train year-round at the facility. The public can visit
the complex and take a bobsled ride, tour the complex, or ski the extensive cross-country network of
groomed and set track trails. In the summer months
wheeled bobsled rides are also available, as well as
a mountain biking center and a summer biathlon
training facility.
Whiteface Ski Center
Whiteface has the greatest vertical drop East of
the Rockies, 3,430-feet. In addition to being a
favorite among recreational skiers and snowboarders, all of the race courses are fully sanctioned for
international competition. There are 79 trails ranging from beginner to expert and out-of-bounds skiing and riding. In the non-winter months,
Whiteface operates as a mountain bike center and
hosts a variety of festivals and events. Tourists can
enjoy a drive the Whiteface Memorial Highway to
the summit of Whiteface. The Cloudsplitter
Gondola, North America’s fastest gondola, whisks
passengers from the base lodge to the summit of
Little Whiteface in just over seven minutes and is
used year-round. More information on Lookout

Gore Mountain Ski Center
Gore has a wide variety of terrain, from easy
beginner slopes to challenging expert trails. There
are 85 trails spread over three distinct ski areas at
Gore. Gore also boasts one of the steepest headwalls in the East. During the non-winter months,
Gore offers mountain biking, hiking and other summer activities. Gore is in North Creek, located in
Warren County, an hour from Lake Placid. The
mountain put in the new Northwoods Gondola, a
heated, eight-passenger gondola. It transports
skiers to the summit of Bear Mountain and also
used as a summer attraction, plus Burnt Ridge
information which may be found at www.goremountain.com.

Flurry of activity at LPCA
Welcome to winter! While the long, cold winter
has finally settled in the Adirondacks, the Lake
Placid Center for the Arts (LPCA) is just warming
up. Celebrating 38 years of arts in the Adirondacks,
the LPCA offers excellent programming to North
Country residents and visitors throughout the year.
The Joy to the Children XIV Benefit will be held
on Thursday, Dec. 2 at the Mirror Lake Inn Resort
and Spa, donated by Lisa and Ed Weibrecht. This
holiday benefit will feature a silent auction, gingerbread house competition, area artist embellished
Nutcrackers, music, scrumptious goodies, and the
chance to mingle with friends both old and new in
the beautifully decorated Mirror Lake Inn. All proceeds from Joy to the Children are used directly for
young people’s programs, including: LPCA’s For
Schools Only performances, free afterschool arts
workshops, and free children’s theater camps.
Celebrate the season with the 10th annual An
Adirondack Christmas featuring Dan Duggan, Roy
Hurd, Peggy Lynn, and Frank Orsini on Saturday,
Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. The theater will be filled with the
merry sounds of music as four of the Adirondack
Park’s favorite musicians join forces to delight
audiences of all ages. Special guests for the evening
will include Tom Hodgson and Henry Jankiewicz.
Winter at the LPCA is flurried with special
events in the theater as several nationally and internationally known groups grace the stage. As of
press time, the following groups have been confirmed, check our Web site for a full listing of winter events. The season kicks off with Pendragon
Theatre’s “Dracula” from Jan. 14 to 16. Martha
Gallagher, the Adirondack Harper, returns to the
LPCA stage on Friday, Jan. 21 for an evening filled
with outstanding music, stories and laughter. Music
continues as the Adirondack Woodwind Ensemble
takes the stage on Saturday, Jan. 29. Pendragon
Theatre returns with their annual winter show (this
year the proposed title is the laugh-out-loud comedy “Completely Hollywood!”) for three weekends
of professional theater on Feb. 11, 12, 18, 19, 20,
25 and 27.
The LPCA is proud to present “The MET: Live
in HD” series throughout the season. Programs
include: “La Fanciulla del West” (live — Jan. 8),
“Don Carlo” (encore — Jan. 22), “Nixon in China”
(encore — Feb. 13), “Iphigenie en Tauride” (live
—Feb. 26), “Lucia di Lammermoor” (live —
March 19), “Le Comte Ory” (live — April 9),
“Capriccio” (live — April 23), “Il Trovatore” (live
— April 30), and “Die Walkere” (live — May 14).
Most programs begin at 1 p.m.
New this year, the LPCA is excited to present the
best of British theater broadcast live in cinemas
around the world. National Theatre Live programs
include: “Hamlet” on Dec. 9, “FELA!” on Jan. 13,
“King Lear” on Feb. 3, “Frankenstein” on March
17, and “The Cherry Orchard” on June 30. All
shows are on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m.
Mud season is music season at the LPCA. Join us
as we host the Reason to Smile one-night-only concert on Saturday, March 5. Acoustic group Ball In
The House is scheduled for a week-long residency,
including outreach workshops and a concert in the
end of March. The full, rich sounds of the Syracuse
Symphony Orchestra will fill the theater on
Wednesday, April 27. Contact the LPCA for more
information on the 2011 schedule.
From January to April, the LPCA invites you to
the Friday Night Film Series. These award-winning
films are shown throughout the season for onenight only. Screenings are at 7:30 p.m. and tickets
are $6 general admission. Call the Box Office for
film titles and dates. In addition to our regularly
scheduled Film Series, enjoy the Banff Mountain
Film Festival’s — Best of the Fest on Sunday, Jan.
30.
When the days look dreary, visit the Fine Arts
Gallery to brighten your view. “The Big Little Art
Show, an Invitational Miniatures” exhibit presented
in collaboration with the Adirondack Artists’ Guild
will be on display in the LPCA Upper Gallery and
“Abstract Landscape Paintings by Bill Crosby”
(lower gallery) will be on display through Dec. 30.
Jan-Marie Spanard (upper gallery) and “Arts-2gether New York State Touring Exhibit” (lower
gallery) will be on exhibit from Jan. 7 through Feb.
5. The North Country Middle/High School Juried
Art Show will be on exhibit from Feb. 11 through
Feb. 26. The Arts Council for the Northern
Adirondacks — Annual Cover Art Juried Show
will be on exhibition from March 11 to April 23.
April 27 to May 7 will feature the North Country
Community College Exhibit featuring works by
students. The Elementary School Art Show will be
on exhibit from May 13 to May 29. Winter gallery
hours vary by show. Please call (518) 523-2512 to
find out exact times. Admission is free.
Learn a new skill in the new year. The Arts
Center will be offering myriad Winter Adult
Workshops beginning in January and continuing
through the spring. Some of this year’s offerings
include: Life Drawing; Non-Judgmental Drawing
for Beginners; Photography; Beginner Guitar
Lessons; Local Stone & Silver Jewelry Making;
and Ceramics Studio Sessions. An extensive listing
of workshops will be available in the early part of
the new year.
Past workshops have included everything from
life drawing and swing dance, to writing, basket
making and Feng Shui. Remember that planning
workshops is something the LPCA staff members
do with patrons in mind. Are you looking for
instruction in a class they aren’t currently offering?
Would you like to share your craft, hobby or artistic ability with others by instructing a class? Please
share your suggestions or ideas with the LPCA.

biathlon, bobsled, cross-country skiing, figure skating, women’s ice hockey, luge, skeleton, ski cross,
snowboard cross, snowshoe racing, ski orienteering, ski jumping and speed skating. Held at all
ORDA venues.
¯April 3: Pond Skimming Contest. Come witness the antics at this annual tradition on
Whiteface. Throughout this event skiers and boarders compete to win prizes for longest distance,
biggest and best splash, best costume and more.

ADK: Fun in the outdoors
The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) offers
educational programs at its three properties and at
off-site locations. ADK owns two facilities in the
Lake Placid area: the Heart Lake property at the
Adirondak Loj (8 miles south of Lake Placid) and
Johns Brook Lodge (accessible by foot only from
the Garden trailhead in Keene Valley, a 3.5-mile
hike). ADK’s headquarters is in Lake George.

The Adirondack Mountain Club Education
Department also offers year-round outreach programs for school groups, outing clubs, college
groups, troops, families and individuals, all taught

ADK Saturday Lecture Series
The Adirondack Mountain Club offers presentations on natural history, backcountry recreation,
and Adirondack art, music, and history for your
enjoyment. These programs take place on
Saturdays at 8 p.m. (Jan. 1 - March 19, 2010) in
the High Peaks Information Center (HPIC) at the
end of the Adirondak Loj Road, located 8 miles
outside of Lake Placid. All programs are open to
the public and are free of charge.
