Route:
Starting at the Scout Centre (1189 m) cross the bridge over the river Kander and turn right.
Follow the road to the cable car station Eggeschwand. The cable car departs every half hour.
Please visit the reception for discounted tickets and departure times. From Sunnbüel you
descend moderate slopes to the Spittelmatte plateau in 15 minutes.
Walk south on the Wanderweg in the direction of Gemmi. After 2 km there is a sign “Tatlis”
pointing to the left of the track
(route 37) across a field. The track
is hard to see here, but keep going in the exact direction of the
sign until you come to the riverbed
after approximately 300 m. Follow
the bank along the riverbed and
soon the track becomes more
pronounced and Bergweg markers can be seen.
Follow the track staying on the
right side of the riverbed. Some sections of the track have deteriorated, but these sections of the
track can be safely passed by moving down to the riverbed or traversing just above the damaged
track sections.
The Bergweg signs will lead you to the left over a large bolder to cross the riverbed. The track
then begins to wind up through coniferous forest. After 300 m there are some small caves to
the right of the track which offer an ideal resting point in bad weather.
After 1 km on the Bergweg you leave the forest and move onto the alpine meadow. The track
is not very clear on the ground but Bergweg markers can be seen clearly painted on rocks
every 30 to 50 meters. The meadow is a perfect place to see wildlife like marmots and Ibex.
After 1.5 Km of easy walking on the meadow the steepness increases for the last 0.5 km
before the summit. When approaching the summit take care that the group stay on the south
side of the ridge and do not venture over the other side as the cliff edge is not clearly defined.
From the summit descend via the same route until you reach the “Tatlis” signpost.
Continue following the Wanderweg back in the direction of the Sunnbüel cable car until you
come to a junction after 950 m (1872 m). Take the track on the right signposted to Gasterntal.
The Wanderweg continues for another kilometre along the Schroarzbach stream until you see
the Bergweg on the right signposted for Gasterntal (route 30). Follow the Bergweg down taking
caution after the track crosses the stream. This section of the track is steep and exposed in
some places, but cables are in place to
assist on difficult sections. After some
steep switchbacks the Bergweg reaches
the valley floor and continues to the hisKISC - Sunnbüel - Spittelmatte - Untertatelistorical Waldhus Berg Hotel(1358), the
horn - Spittelmatte - Gurnigel - Gasterntal KISC
only remaining restaurant and hotel in
Switzerland without electricity.
From the Waldhus take the Wanderweg
to the left which goes through a small
forested section of the valley. The Wanderweg follows the
stream on the left and after 200 meters there is a Bergweg
to the left crossing the river. Follow this Bergweg on the
opposite side of the river to the road. After 400 m and
crossing the river twice the track starts to descend steeply.
The Bergweg finishes near the Sunnbüel cable car station,
follow the road from here back to the centre.
This map is only a guide. Please take a hiking map with you. They are available at Reception.
