This will soften the dried glue and allow you to wipe it off easily. Numbering your clamps will allow you to identify potential issues with some of them in the future. After you have cleaned your jig, make clean-up simple by using Clamp Release Tape on the clamps. Clamp Release Tape prevents adhesive build-up on your jig and ensures you do not glue your clamp to the arrow shaft in the fletching process if too much glue is used. Do not let the glue set on your jig: wipe it off with a paper towel between each use. 1) a. For new shafts: Cut shaft to proper length. b. For used shafts (re-fletching): Remove old vanes, wraps and glue with “The Stripper” or the “Strip-Pro”by Bohning. To remove sticky residue, spray Bohning Wrap Adhesive Remover on shaft and wipe with lint free towel until all residue is removed. 2) Carbon and Aluminum shafts: Clean shaft with Bohning SSR and scrub with Scotch-Brite® pad. Rinse under HOT running water and let air dry. Wooden shafts: Sand the shaft with coarse grit sand paper, then buff the surface smooth with a fine grit sand paper. Use a tack cloth to remove sawdust. To seal the wood, we recommend dipping entire shaft in a waterbased Acry-Lac Gloss, or solvent-based Fletch-Lac Clear, Fletch-Lac Blue Clear, Fletch-Lac Supercoat or Stain. 3) If using inserts, install with one of Bohning’s adhesives: Ferr-l-tite®, Ferr-l-tite® Cool Flex, Insert Iron, Instant Gel or Blazer® Bond (see table on page 5). Do Not Clean Bohning Vanes: All Bohning vanes are primed for optimal adhesion. Do NOT remove the primer by sanding or rubbing with solvents. Bohning primer is compatible with all known archery adhesives. It is OK (although not necessary) to apply a primer on the vanes if your instant glue comes with one. All wraps are not equal. There are multiple grades of materials that are sold as arrow wraps. If a manufacturer has not obtained the correct surface coating and thickness, adhesion problems may arise. The material used by the Bohning Company has been tested and verified for adhesion strength and durability. APPLYING ARROW WRAPS: 1) Remove wrap from backing. Place adhesive side up on semi-soft surface (mouse pad). Glue When choosing a glue there are many factors which will affect your decision. Some of them include: Application: different glues should be chosen for fletching vs. applying inserts, etc. Shaft type will also be a determining factor Environment: some glues are best in high humidity vs. low humidity Viscosity (resistance to flow): personal preference will determine the thickness of the glue. Time: the amount of time before shooting is recommended 2) Align shaft with edge of wrap and roll with steady motion and downward pressure. 3) Place index fletching over the wrap seam to help secure the wrap. Dipping: Dipping your arrows will improve adhesion bonding in high humidity. You can use Fletch-Lac as is or you can dilute it with Fletch-Lac thinner (60% paint, 40% thinner) and apply two to three coats. This is our preferred method as it creates a thin and lightweight coat. 4 7 3 6 1 N . 7 M I L E R D . 231-229-4247 L A K E C I T Y , M I 4 9 6 5 1 WWW.BOHNING.COM 7 3 6 1 N . 7 M I L E R D . 231-229-4247 L A K E C I T Y , M I 4 9 6 5 1 WWW.BOHNING.COM 5 Choosing Your Vane o do In Indoor Blazer Blazer® X2 Mini Blazer® Micro Blazer® Killer Ice ImpulseTM 3” & 4” ImpulseTM Deux ImpulseTM First Flight X Vane® - Parabolic X Vane® - Shield Cut: 1.5”,1.75”, 2.25” X Vane® - Shield Cut: 3” & 3.5” Air Vane Blazer® Stretch FletchTM Blazer® QuikFletch® Bolt Vane ® ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ p rS ot s Ou o td ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ F or ie ld o td Ou Outdoor F or IT A Ou ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ o td 3 or -D Fi ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ de h ec M Hunting ✓ ✓ ✓ i an ca l Cr s os bo w ✓ For optimum results we recommend fletching Blazer® vanes at a 3˚ helical. Apply thin bead of Bohning glue to vane base. ✓ REFERENCE GUIDE 45 6 Fletch arrows using one of the Bohning Fletching Jigs: Tower®, Blazer® Helix, Straight or Pro Class Jig. Bohning jigs are designed to apply the correct amount of pressure along the entire vane or feather. Results may vary if other jig brands are used. Some competitor jigs use magnets on the clamp ends for fletching. We find that these do not apply enough downward pressure for good adhesion. ✓ ✓ x ed a Bl Fletching 7 3 6 1 N . 7 M I L E R D . 231-229-4247 L A K E C I T Y , M I 4 9 6 5 1 WWW.BOHNING.COM 2) Follow jig instructions for specific arrow shaft insertion, etc. Allow proper clamp time in the jig according to glue instructions. 3) Carefully remove arrow from jig, dot tip and tail of vane with a small amount of glue (for added security) and allow proper cure time according to glue instructions before use. How much glue do you need? For solvent based glues like Fletch-Tite Platinum®, fill the base of the vane. Instant glues (CA glues) only require a thin bead of glue that coats the entire vane base. 7 3 6 1 N . 7 M I L E R D . 231-229-4247 L A K E C I T Y , M I 4 9 6 5 1 WWW.BOHNING.COM 7 Removal Vanes: Use “The Stripper” or the “Strip-Pro” by Bohning to strip the vanes and glue off the shaft. FOR ALUMINUM ARROWS: Remove nock. Plug arrow using Bohning Dip’N Plugz. Soak the end in acetone or denatured alcohol for a couple of hours or overnight to remove traces of adhesives. FOR CARBON ARROWS: Completely scrape adhesive residue off using “The Stripper” or the “Strip-Pro.” Wipe with acetone or denatured alcoholDo not soak. Wraps: There are 3 ways to remove wraps that we recommend. A) Use “The Stripper” or the “Strip-Pro” to remove the wrap. B) Use a hair dryer to soften the adhesive and peel the wrap. C) Soak the wrapped shaft in hot water and peel off the wrap. Use Bohning Wrap Adhesive Remover to remove vinyl residue from the shaft. Paint: Soak in acetone or lacquer thinner overnight, then scrub the paint off. Proceed to shaft preparation explained on page 3. For all: After removal process is complete, proceed to shaft preparation (as shown on page 3). Adhesion Trouble Shooting Sometimes problems can arise while fletching. Listed below are recommendations to help determine a solution to some common problems. BASIC TIPS TO PREVENT PROBLEMS: - Proper shaft prep is very important for strong adhesion. - Follow all instructions and allow time for proper clamp and cure time for adhesives. - For best results with Fletch-Tite Platinum®: fletch arrows and allow to cure in a controlled climate with low humidity (30-50% relative humidity). If humidity is too high (especially above 70% relative humidity) we recommend fletching with an instant adhesive such as Blazer® Bond or Instant Gel. -It is important to make sure none of these items are in your fletching area: Silicone based aerosols, oils/chemicals, excess dust/pet hair, food/beverage - Use a substantial amount of glue on vane base. It is ok if the glue beads up slightly around the vane base when fletched (see page 7 for details). - Clean jig clamps/arms frequently with acetone and use Bohning’s clamp release tape to prevent adhesive build up (which impedes downward pressure). - Discard glue after 2 years and purchase new to ensure best adhesion properties. HOW TO IDENTIFY OTHER PROBLEMS: Glue is on the shaft: usually indicates a problem with vanes. Some vanes are manufactured using release agent and need to be cleaned prior to fletching. This is not the case with Bohning vanes. Glue is on the vanes, arrow shaft is clean: usually indicates a problem with the arrow shaft. Repeat the cleaning procedure and try again. Some shafts need more abrasion. Sometimes the best solution to this is to use a wrap or dip the arrow shaft. Glue is on both vane and arrow shaft: could indicate a jig not properly setup, a damaged clamp (if you have numbered them, look for a pattern in the failure), glue has not been allowed to dry for recommended amount of time or a contaminant on parts of the shaft or vanes. The Bohning Company offers many vane styles. The chart on page 6 helps archers determine which vane is best based on intended use. See the Bohning catalog or website (www.bohning.com) for more information on individual vanes. 8 7 3 6 1 N . 7 M I L E R D . 231-229-4247 L A K E C I T Y , M I 4 9 6 5 1 WWW.BOHNING.COM 7 3 6 1 N . 7 M I L E R D . 231-229-4247 L A K E C I T Y , M I 4 9 6 5 1 WWW.BOHNING.COM 9 Seal-Tite® Bowstring Wax Tex-Tite® Bowstring Wax Overview Overview Seal-Tite® is silicone-based bowstring wax formulated especially for hightensile synthetic bowstrings that require surface lubrication. It remains soft in cold weather and extends bowstring life by reducing friction between the fibers during shooting. Synthetic bowstrings are not porous and wax cannot penetrate the string fibers. Wax protects bowstrings and serving from the weather and provides a silky, odorless, waterproof, and durable coating. Tools Required Tube of Seal-Tite Optional: leather strip to rub the wax onto the string (although using your fingers is recommended) Tex-Tite is a high-viscosity wax formulated for Dacron or synthetic bowstrings. It is a Paraffin-based wax blend that protects string and serving from the weather, providing a tacky, odorless, waterproof, and durable coating. Dry bowstring fibers tend to vibrate against each other when the bow is shot, potentially wearing the fibers out prematurely and weakening the bowstring. Proper application of a good formula wax can extend the life of a bowstring many times over. ® Tools Required ® Application To apply to bowstrings: Start with a clean string (remove dirt and old wax). Warm the tube by rolling it between your hands first to loosen. Remove lid and push wax up from the bottom of the tube. Apply liberally to the bowstring fibers. Rub wax into fibers briskly using fingers or the leather strip. The leather strip allows for a quicker and more even application, but the drawback is that friction may overheat the string and wax. For this reason we recommend using your fingers so it is easy to feel the temperature of the wax and string. As wax warms, it melts onto fibers. Wax string at the first indication of wear in string fibers (approximately 200 shots). Some signs of wear include fraying of the string and discoloration. Other uses: Use on press-fit nocks. Apply to nock shank for easier insertion and indexing. Press Fit Nocks There are many methods for installing nocks, most of which are NOT recommended as they have a tendency to damage nocks. Never do the following: Push the nock ears against a hard surface, use pliers to twist into place, or bite the nock. Instead, always use a plastic indexing tool to insert and index your nocks. We recommend using the Bohning Nock Indexing Tool, the Deluxe Broadhead Wrench, or the Nock-Out Tool. Using bowstring wax on press fit nocks can be useful for indexing, especially if the nock fit is very tight. Simply apply a small amount of wax to the nock shank and rotate the nock as you insert it into the arrow shaft. Continue rotating the nock to the proper index position to match the fletchings. Never glue press fit nocks. If your nock fit is too loose, we recommend using Teflon Tape around the nock shank to ensure a tighter fit. 7 3 6 1 N . 7 M I L E R D . 231-229-4247 L A K E C I T Y , M I 4 9 6 5 1 WWW.BOHNING.COM 13 Pin Nocks Using hot-melt adhesive for inserting Pin nock adapters: Caution: Do not touch hot surfaces or adhesives with bare skin. Always wear heat-resistant gloves and eye protection when performing this task. Hold the pin nock adapter by the pin with pliers and heat over a small flame. Heat hot-melt adhesive stick with flame until it glosses over (just before melting). Apply heat again to adapter while applying the stick of melted adhesive to it. Be sure to apply adhesive all the way around the adapter insert. Press pin nock adapter into arrow shaft while rotating one complete turn around. Wipe off excess hot melt material. Refer to the Technical Bulletin on Bohning Insert Iron™, Ferr-L-Tite®, and Cool Flex™ for more information on installing Pin Nock adapters. Once the adapter is securely installed in the shaft, fully seat a Pin Nock over the pin using the Bohning Nock Indexing Tool and rotate it to the correct index position. Tapered/Swedged Nocks These are the only nocks that should ever be glued in place. Typically these nocks are installed prior to fletching (if applicable) so indexing is not usually a concern during installation. To install, simply apply a 3-4 drops of Bohning Blazer® Bond Instant Glue or Instant Gel to the tapered surface at the end of the shaft. Use caution as these adhesives bond to skin instantly! Using light pressure, twist the swedged nock onto the tapered end, gradually increasing the pressure until the nock has been rotated one full turn. This twisting action ensures the glue evenly spreads between the shaft and the nock, providing the best possible bond. If indexing is required (e.g. for bowfishing shafts or pre-fletched arrows) continue turning the nock until the correct orientation is achieved before the glue dries. Wipe up any excess glue with a paper towel or cotton swab. Inspecting Your Nock The smallest nick or crack in your nock can lead to major failure on your next shot. Just like your arrow shaft, it is important to inspect your nock before every shot. Nock damage may occur at the target when subsequently shot arrows hit them. For example, if you graze one of your arrows and a small nick the size of a pin point is now near the shoulder of your nock, it may not look like much, but that nick may be just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Minuscule cracks not visible to the naked eye may be radiating from that nick deep into the nock. If left unnoticed, those small cracks could propagate into a major fracture zone the next time it is fired, which could harm both you and your equipment. When in doubt, remove it, and replace the nock. Built for Speed Not all nocks are created equal. With today’s bows edging ever closer to 400 FPS, your nock will need to handle forces like never before. At Bohning we have dedicated time, research, and put our expert knowledge to work to produce nocks that will withstand the rigors that faster bows produce. Contact area with the bowstring plays a major role in a nock’s longevity at high speeds. Nocks with a saddle-shaped throat tend to focus all of the bowstring’s force onto one point in the very center of the curve as shown in Figure 1. The problem with this common design choice is that focusing so much force onto such a relatively small area may lead to rapid deformation of the nock throat. This is noticed as a “V” shape in what normally should be a perfectly circular nock throat. This “V-ing” is a visual indicator of what the bowstring is doing to the nock—essentially wedging it apart. As the V becomes more and more pronounced, the ears of the nock spread further apart, until it reaches the point where it will no longer snap onto the string. The solution to this problem lies in the throat geometry much more so than the nock material itself. Nocks with a halfpipe style throat (Figure 2) distribute the Fig. 1 - Saddle Fig. 2 - HalfThroat Pipe Throat force of the bowstring over a broader Figure 0 Saddle Throat 14 7 3 6 1 N . 7 M I L E R D . 231-229-4247 L A K E C I T Y , M I 4 9 6 5 1 WWW.BOHNING.COM Figure 0 Half-‐Pipe Throat 7 3 6 1 N . 7 M I L E R D . 231-229-4247 L A K E C I T Y , M I 4 9 6 5 1 WWW.BOHNING.COM 15 Key Points area.
