Rich Boynton - Variety The Children`s Charity
RICH BOYNTON December 5, 2013 Rich Boynton Rich Boynton was born in Seattle, Washington, and moved to Dallas, Texas at age 15. A year later, he started his first job working as an usher in the Promenade Theatre. Soon he was promoted to Assistant Manager, and then Manager - all while attending Richland College and North Texas State University. The Promenade is also where he met his wife of over 38 years, Tara. Rich also managed the Medallion Theater prior to going to work for Columbia Pictures selling film in 1978. Two years later, he flipped sides and started buying film for Plitt Theatres. In 1986, Rich began working for AMC Theatres and then for General Cinema in 1991. In 1995, he was transferred from Dallas to Los Angeles. When AMC Theatres bought General Cinema in 2002, Rich worked for a short stint with MGM before joining Loews Theatres. Once again AMC Theatres bought the company Rich worked for, this time he was hired on - and in 2006 he transferred to Kansas City. Currently, Rich is Senior Vice President, Head Film Buyer for AMC Theatres. Rich now lives in Parkville, Missouri with his wife Tara. He enjoys Kansas City barbecue, watching sports (his favorite teams are the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers) and golfing. One of his favorite events is the Variety of Southern California Golf Tournament at Robinson Ranch. His most enjoyable past time however, is spending time with his kids and grandkids. Son Aaron, daughter-inlaw Anya and grandsons Riley and Tyler live in San Jose, California. Daughter Holly and soon-to-be son-in-law Keith live in Los Angeles. Daughter Drew, son-in-law Spencer, grandson Isaac and granddaughter Iyla live in Wahiawa, Hawaii. Variety of Southern California is proud to honor Rich Boynton with the 2013 Heart of Show Business Award. 2013 Heart of Show Business Award Variety –the Children’s Charity of Southern California Proudly Honors RICH BOYNTON For his continued commitment to the causes and mission of Variety –the Children’s Charity and the children we serve, as well as his eminent position in the entertainment industry. VARIETY Andie Bieber Jake Bieber Ally Devries Jordyn Ex Felicia Forman December 5, 2013 Dear Rich, When I called on behalf of Variety Tent 25 to ask you to accept the 2013 Heart of Show Business Award, I wasn’t surprised when you humbly responded that there were far more worthy recipients. However, your family, co-workers, and industry peers feel differently. We all think you are the “All American” guy who has earned the love and respect from every person who knows you. Your unfailing support of numerous industry charities over the last four decades coupled with the money raised from today’s luncheon continue to make a positive impact on the lives of children. Always the savvy and persistent executive who has been kind and professional to everyone throughout your career, your emphasis on family values, your integrity, and your infectious optimism are legendary. On behalf of your loving wife Tara, your children Aaron, Holly, and Drew, and all your business colleagues, we congratulate you for receiving this prestigious award. As a fellow Pacific Northwesterner, I trust your impending retirement will afford you more time to relax and to visit our beloved Oregon Coast. While your passion for the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers continues to baffle me, I look forward to sharing sourdough pancakes with you at Seaside’s Pig N Pancakes and maybe even talking you and Tara into coming down to the beach to go clamming and/or crabbing, or even just to enjoy a bonfire. The 2013 Heart of Show Business Award rightfully goes to a man of great character who has made a positive difference in our industry and for the children Variety serves. Thanks “Pappy,” there is no one more deserving of this award than you! With Great Admiration, Scott A. Forman President December 5, 2013 Dear Rich, On behalf of the Board of Directors of Variety the Children’s Charity of Southern California, our members and the children we serve, congratulations on receiving our 2013 Hear of Show Business Award. This award recognizes individuals who contribute to the success and vitality of the entertainment industry, as well as outstanding service to the community spirit. The respect and admiration you have from everyone in our industry, after almost four decades of service, you received the old fashion way. You earned it. Please accept our heartfelt thanks and admiration for your remarkable career. Enjoy your special day. Warmest personal regards, Alan Davy Chairman Dearest Rich/Dad, Congratulations on receiving this award from The Variety of Southern California. We are so proud of you! Your integrity and the way you make people feel when they are with you, it is easy to see why you were chosen for this year’s honoree. You’ve always put your whole heart in everything you do. That is including your work and play, but especially with our family. You have a way of making each person feel like they are the most important in your life. Your kindness and generosity that you exhibit everyday shows what a wonderful person you really are. You always lead by example. Congratulations on being Honored today! We Love you always! Tara, Aaron, Anya, Riley, Tyler, Holly, Keith, Drew, Spencer, Isaac and Iyla It's difficult to get dirt on my brother if you know him well, he always does the right things, and doesn't really screw things up. Rich and I did share a bedroom for most of our childhood, however, so I do have a couple things to throw out there. I remember when we needed to rearrange our bedroom so Mom wouldn't see our latest BB gun hole in the wall, Rich was a bad shot. Or when we (mainly he) started a little fire in a coffee can with white gas to cook bologna. In one mila-second Rich went from brown hair to about the same color he has now. One summer, while our family was packing for vacation to the ocean, Rich and I were throwing rocks over the house across the street and into the woods behind it. Our Father came out with a load of suit cases and Rich said, hey Dad watch this! Rich wound-up his arm to impress our father and let it fly. His trajectory was off a little and he threw a fast ball right through our neighbors 8' X 10' picture window which seemed like an explosion. Our Father looked at him and said, why in the hell did you do that?! Of coarse the 20 or 30 throws before that were really something to be proud of. —When Rich was older in high school he was a stud on any pitching mound, you pretty much knew the outcome of the game if Rich was pitching. I love my little brother and could go on and on. He's a great husband, father, brother, son, uncle and friend. Rich is loved and respected by all his siblings. Jeremy Boynton Benefactor AMC Theatres Rich wasn't always the big deal that he is now. Way back when, Rich was an usher at the 2 screen Promenade theater, in the small suburb of Richardson, TX. That's where he met my sister, and they became inseparable. Rich drove a Gremlin, remember those? After closing time for the theater, you could find Rich and Tara with friends at Sambo’s (think Denny's). They would be there for hours, serving themselves coffee, and putting tissue under the caps of the salt and pepper shakers for a prank. You could hear Rich laugh across the restaurant, and he made Tara laugh so much, you knew they were truly happy. Rich had good friends and good family, and even then he was making those friendships that last decades. Other nights we played midnight Nerf football in the parking lot of the drug store. Rich and Tara married, and lived in a small apartment. He was starting his love of technology. He had the first electronic game I ever saw - a Magnivox car racing game. The track was on a plastic sheet you taped to the TV screen. Not too long after he was using Apples and making himself one of those techy 'early adopters'. Then it was moving to New Orleans, where they had Aaron. Rich found another true calling, as a dedicated, loving father. Back to Texas for Holly, and then Drew. He has always been a caring and loving dad, and his kids adore him. He loved the dad routine: sports, family time, moving up in the theater business, and some golf now and then. Rich has been known to lose his temper, and I remember his bag falling off the golf cart at Hurricane Creek. I think most people on the course heard him yell! The family moved to LA, with lots of time at kid’s baseball, softball and other games. Though they moved far away, you have to give him credit for remaining a big Rangers and Cowboys fan. Now Rich and Tara have made their new life in Kansas City, but Rich being Rich, he is still very involved with friends (old and new) and family. It has been my great fortune and pleasure to be Rich’s brother-inlaw. He could not be a better one. Jeff Moran Dear Uncle Rich, Living so far away we don’t get to see each other very often. Sometimes years go by with out seeing you and Aunt Tara. When ever I do get the opportunity to visit, it is the highlight of my trip. I always look forward to seeing you both. I enjoy our conversations, your stories, sense of humor and the way you get real pissed off when the Cowboys are losing. (I may have witnessed this or perhaps it was just the story that Jami told me about you locking her outside because she was rooting for the Broncos…. either way!) I’ll also never forget the time you busted me as a teenager for smoking cigarettes! You gave me a good scolding that day. I hated to let you down. I did eventually quit, so thank you for planting the seed. You are an amazing father and husband. Your dedication to the entire family is appreciated and admired by us all. I want to thank you for the generosity that you have shown me over the years and the mark you have made on my life. Uncle Rich, I speak health and longevity into your life today. You will continue to be the strength and leader of our family. I look forward to many more highlighted trips and fun conversations. Congratulations to you, on your special day and ALL of the success you have achieved in life. You hold a huge place in my heart…..always. Much love, Dana Rozell Congratulations, Rich on this honor bestowed by Variety. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of such recognition. I am sorry that I am unable to attend and am looking forward to hearing about the proceedings. Enjoy the afternoon! John Rich is a wonderful person and brother in-law. To me he is a Brother I never had and always wanted. When you're spending time with Rich you know he's listening and cares about you and what you have to say. Rich is quick to laugh and fun to be around, quick-witted and has a way of making people around him comfortable. Thanks to everyone for allowing us to be part of Rich's day of celebration. When he was younger his parents smoked and he would always see them light their cigarettes with the car lighter. Well one day he decided he would do it too so he pushed that lighter in and stuck it to his lips and burnt the heck out of his lips... I have so many very found memories of my Uncle Rich such as going to the movies, or Six Flags Over Texas. And if you know my uncle Rich, you know he loves his Dallas Cowboys. I was visiting them at home which I did quite a bit and we were watching a Dallas game and I was routing for the Seattle Seahawks, and they were winning, well my uncle Rich locked me outside on the back porch to finish watching the game. I learned then that you never go against the Cowboys... Every Summer we would go to visit Cannon Beach, Oregon and stay with my grandparents and my uncle Rich was always there too, and his family and I always looked forward to these trips, Well I was probably in the 5th or 6th grade and it was a sunny clear day and he told me if I looked hard enough I could see Japan from their front porch, and of course I believed him. I am so very fortunate to have an uncle as special as my Uncle Rich.. Thank you for all the fond memories I have. I love you.
