Letter From The Editor...

Welcome to issue #17 Landscape Equipment.
Welcome to the last issue of
the year. Just because the year
is winding down, that doesn’t
mean we are. We have been
on location at a number of
diverse industry events, in-
cluding The Buildings Show,
the Ontario Hot Mix Paving
Association Fall Seminar,
the Canadian Council for
Public-Private Partnerships
national conference, the
Canadian Association of
Equipment Distributors Ontario holiday season power
breakfast, the Ritchie Bros.
Toronto December auction,
and a Diamond Mowers
demonstration organized
by Colvoy Equipment.
You can read about all of
these events in this issue.
This issue also contains
one feature that is a year in
the making—The Equipment
Journal 2015 Top 100 Machines & Attachments (page
A11). Equipment Journal has
produced this list every December for four years.
And, of course, we have a
varied selection of landscape
equipment.
Beginning in 2016, Equipment Journal will produce a
paper that focuses on two
product categories or markets. Having just 17 focuses
each year just wasn’t enough
to spotlight all the markets
Equipment Journal serves.
This allows us to give more
attention to machines and
markets that have always
been present in Equipment
Journal, but have never had
its own spotlight.
If you have a print story
idea or press release or video
idea, please send it to me, at:
editor@equipmentjournal.com
We are also available on
Twitter at EQJnews. Follow
us for t he latest equ ipment-related news.
Happy holidays and we
wish you the best in the new
year.

Skyjack Lifts Help SNOLAB
Expand Deep Underground
Two scissor lifts from Skyjack are working at a unique
location—the deepest clean
laborator y in the world.
Located at Vale Creighton
Mine near Sudbury, Ontario,
the SNOLAB laboratory is
2 kilometres (1.24 miles)
u nderg rou nd, w h ich is
equivalent to four and a
half Empire State Buildings
stacked top to bottom.
SNOLAB is situated so
deep underground to prevent cosmic radiation from
reaching the labs. Scientists
perform experiments on dark
matter, neutrinos, low-background counting and
genomics. The lab opened

process. Beyond the transportation, the environment
must also be extremely clean
to conduct the experiments;
this means the scissor lifts
must also be squeaky clean.
“E v en t hou g h one of
the Skyjacks we supplied
was brand new, both machines had to be completely
scrubbed down before they
were brought underground,”
Campeau said. “When they
arrived on site, the machines

stone-boat, which is a large

Getting the machines down Skyjacks arrived at the lab,
to the SNOLAB was a difficult they had to be scrubbed
down yet again to remove
any dust.”
With a working height of
7.6 metres (25 feet), weight
capacity of 249 kilograms
(550 pounds) and 25% gradeability, the SJIII 3219 electric
scissor lifts are ideal for
versatile applications. The

new experiment sites is set
to continue through 2017.
Since 2013, two SJIII 3219
electric scissor lifts have been
helping with construction of
new specialized experiments.
“The experiments going on
at SNOLAB all have their own
caverns in the mine, and it’s
vital that all machines used
underground are spotless,”
explained Dan Campeau,
President of North Rock Rentals, the rental company that is
supplying SNOLAB with the
aerial work platforms.
The SNOLAB laboratory is located at Vale Creighton Mine near
Sudbury, Ontario, two kilometres undeground.

A New Commander III for the Next Generation of Valley
Valley Curbing Ltd. started
out in business as a company
named Okanagan Paving
Stones and Curbing Ltd.
in 1988 in Kelowna, British
Columbia, by three original
owners, Peter Layhew, Robert
Oliver, and Lloyed Brandner.
They have since retired, but
the company has stayed
family-owned. The current
owners include Doug Valentino (Peter’s son-in-law), Gary
Brandner (Lloyed’s brother)
and new junior partners Chad
Valentino (Doug’s son) and
Jesse Oliver (Robert’s son).
The company has always
owned Gomaco three-track
Commander IIIs for their
curb and gutter and sidewalk projects. After the new
junior partners joined Valley
Curbing, they set their sights
on a new machine, and collaborated with the existing
owners to spec out their own
Next Generation Commander
III. They worked with their
local Gomaco distributor in
British Columbia, Lonetrack
Equipment Inc., to purchase
the new machine.
“The next generation of
Valley Curbing, Chad and
I, we were the ones who
chose the Next Generation
Commander III because of
its new features and technology,” Jesse Oliver, Partner/
Foreman for Valley Curbing,
said. “We have always run a
Commander III. It has the
power that is required for us
on a lot of these demanding
jobs. Its durability is key. We
can’t be in a small community
in southern British Columbia,
hours away from necessary
parts, and have it breakdown.
That just can’t happen and
that’s never been a problem
with the Commander III.”
To prepare for the arrival of
the new machine, Oliver and
three others from his company
travelled to Gomaco University
for the week-long three-track
Commander III class early this
winter. The courses combine
classroom time with hands-on
shop experience. This trip was
Oliver’s third time attending
Gomaco University.
“Even if you’re running
an older machine, you learn
little things just by talking
and listening to other contractors,” Oliver said. “The
classes always give a good
foundation of knowledge for
us to build on. It really makes
my guys feel good to go down
and just be a part of it, and I
think it gives them a sense of
professionalism when they go
to the school.”
Valley Curbing’s Next Generation Commander III made
a stop in Las Vegas, Nevada,
and was one of the featured
machines in Gomaco’s World
of Concrete booth in February.
From Las Vegas, it was delivered to Kelowna and immediately put to work on the Lakes
Subdivision in the lake country
of Winfield, British Columbia.
It’s a new development that sits
up high overlooking Okanagan
Lake, Kalamalka Lake, and
Wood Lake.
For their first project with while slipforming a 450-mm
their new machine, Valley (17.7-inch) wide rollover curb
Curbing simultaneously and gutter profile.

Trucks & Trailers Dominate Ritchie Bros.
Toronto December 2015 Auction
The latest Ritchie Bros.
Toronto auction, December
7-8, featured about 190 truck
tractors, 165 trailers, and
60 van trucks. Overall, the
company sold more than
2,100 trucks and equipment
items to the highest bidders,
without minimum bids or
reserve prices.
“Our last Toronto auction
of 2015 features one of the
nicest selections of trucks
a nd t ra i lers we’ve ever
sold in Ontario,” said Anna
Sgro, Senior Vice President
(Canada East), Ritchie Bros.
“We also have a great selection of construction, lifting and material handling
equipment, and more.”
Equipment will be sold
for 390+ owners, including
a selection of late-model
truck tractors and trailers
for Toronto-based TBG Environmental Inc., in operation since 1997.
“The trucks we’re selling
were purchased from Ritchie
Bros. just last year and the
trailers were purchased
brand new. Both were used
for just one contract, which
ends December 1, so we
won’t need them anymore.
They are well-maintained
and ready to go to work for
new ow ners,” said Mark
Bradley, CEO of TBG Environmental. “I’ve bought
and sold with Ritchie Bros.
many times over the years
as projects start and finish.
It’s an easy way to scale up
and down quickly to suit
the individual needs of a
project. With Ritchie Bros.
you have access to a great
selection of used equipment
at a fair price for both buyer
and seller.”
The auction also featured
about 75 compactors, 60
excavators, 30 skid steer
loaders, 25 wheel loaders,
110 scissor lifts, 45 boom
lifts, and 20 tractors.
Some notable equipment
includes a 2005 Tadano
TT800XXL4 8x4x4 80-ton
hydraulic truck crane, a 2015
Caterpillar 336F L hydraulic
excavator, a 2014 Komatsu
PC290LC-10 hydraulic excavator, and three 2011 John
Deere 400D 6x6 articulated
dump trucks.
The Ritchie Bros. final Toronto auction of 2015 features one of the
nicest selections of trucks and trailers the company has ever sold in
Ontario. More than 400 trucks/trailers were sold over the two-day
auction (December 7-8).

Equipment Journal is proud to present its 2015 Top
100 Machines & Attachments; this is the fourth year
that we have ranked machines and attachments
released in a single year.
This year, we have done one thing different; we have marked
every entry that at least one person nominated. Overall, a total
of 30 nominated machines/attachments made the top 100 list.
Machines/attachments don't need to be nominated to be in the
top 100, but it does make sure that we are aware of it when we
compare machines and attachments.
To be considered for this list, a machine/attachment had to
meet three criteria:
»» It must serve the heavy equipment industry
»» It must have been announced between November 1, 2014,
and October 31, 2015
»» It must be available in Canada
Just like last year, machines are grouped together by product
category when at least two machines (usually) of the same
product category made the list. Machines on the list who are the
only representative of their product category are listed under
“Other”. When multiple machines fall into the same application
or industry, but don't fit into a product category, then those
machines are grouped together. All attachments are grouped
together regardless of product category or application.
Machines/attachments are not ranked within the top 100 or
within their product category. Entries are decided upon a pass/fail
system where they either are one of the top 100 or they are not.
Congratulations to all the manufacturers whose products are
on the Equipment Journal 2015 Top 100 Machines & Attachments, and thank you to everyone who nominated a machine
or attachment.

Merry Christmas

Happy New Year
K
From our families to yours
“The Next Generation Commander III is smooth,” Oliver
said. “Smooth and very user
friendly. I love the new G+
control system, its screen, control dials and buttons. Plus,
the G+ diagnostics are really
good. I can go in and easily
diagnose the machine with
all of the feedback available.
“I like the fact that I can
just hit the button and with
cruise control, the machine
will rev itself down. I don’t
have to jog the throttle down,
I just track it, and the machine
remembers what speed it was
at before it stopped. That
works great. Its smoothness
of travel is just really good
and the machine holds tight
to the line.”
Since its arrival, Valley
Curbing has kept their Next
Generation Commander
III busy on several different
projects slipforming a variety
of curb and gutter profiles in
British Columbia.
“It’s really a user-friendly
machine, and after just one
day with it, we’ve been at full
comfort level and full production capacity,” Oliver said.
“I’ve been running Gomaco
machines for 15 plus years
and I won’t go anywhere but
Gomaco. Gomaco is a great
company and so is their distributor here in British Columbia, Lonetrack Equipment.”

Pollster Nik Nanos, Chairman, Nanos Research Group
of Companies, shared his findings on Canadian attitudes
toward P3s (public-private
partnerships).
Nanos conducted focus
groups with several hundred
people to get their gut-feel of
P3s. “One of their first things
we picked up on is that there is
a certain level of sophistication
among people on the subject
of P3s.” says Nanos. “They used
phrases like ‘the governement
can leverage the private sector
to get what they want’ and
talked of risk management.
“People believe the P3
model means infrastructure
projects will be completed
more quickly. They believe that
it is part of corporate culture
to make sure timelines are
met, and that there is a greater
likelihood a project will be
completed on time,” explains
Nanos. They also believe that
projects delivered through a
P3 moel are more likely to be
innovative.”
Among critics, Nanos
reports even a begrudging
acknowledgement that P3s
deliver. “It is hard to argue with
national outcomes.”
Nanos also noted that people
believe that companies know
how to plan for and manage
At the Canadian Centre for Public-Private Partnerships National
Conference, Nick Nanos of Nanos Research Group of Companies
delivered a presentation on people’s attitudes toward P3s. “People
are disgruntled with governments, and they are worried about
governments’ ability to deliver the infrastructure and services that
they want,” says Nanos.
risk better than a government.
“Its part of their culture,” says
Nanos.
However, people didn’t
express only positives. “On
the negative side of the ledger,
there are a lot of questions
about transparency. ‘We
want a web site about the
procurement process’, they
said. ‘Would you visit such a
web site if one existed?’ we
asked. ‘No,’ they replied. ‘We
just want to know that such a
web site exists’.”
In the focus group, participants were asked about how
they feel about the number of
international companies de-
livering P3s in Canada. “From
a public acceptance point of
view, people want a mix. They
don’t mind international companies being involved, but,
if the P3 had a local partner,
that would be ideal, because
local partners are invested in
their communities. Local companies want to go good work
not just to be successful, but
because they want the project
to be a shining beacon of what
they can do.”
In conclusion, people are
usually agnostic to how a
project gets delivered or who
delivers it, says Nanos. “‘Just as
long as my taxes don’t go up.’”

LANDSCAPE EQUIPMENT
Speed, Cold Starts & Simple Operation
Makes Ditch Witch SK755 A Landscaper’s Dream
Frank Bourdage, founder
of F. Bourdage Equipment,
based out of Kemptville, Ontario, loves his Ditch Witch
SK755 mini loader.
“I love the machine’s
speed,” he says. “As well, the
operator stands high on the
machine for better visibility
and for staying out of the
mud. And, the platform is
mounted on a suspension
so it gives a smoother ride
on rough terrain. Plus, the
fuel tank is huge. I don’t fill
it up often compared to my
previous machine. With the
SK755, I can easily work a
full day.”
F. Bourdage Equipment
offers a number of landscape
services and has several small
equipment though the SK755
is his only Ditch Witch machine. Bourdage purchased
the machine in January
2015 from Brandt Tractor,
the Ditch Witch dealer for
Canada.
“If I’m grading, I can lock
the position of the blade
or bucket, when travelling
backward and forward,” says
Bourdage. “So, I can make
it really nice in just two to
three passes. By kicking it
into turbo, I can complete
the work even faster.” (Turbo
is only available as an option
on the SK755 in Canada.)
The machine’s ergonomic operator’s station comes
standard with dual lever
ground drive controls or
the option of a single lever
joystick. Two-way auxiliary
control foot pedal enables
you to maintain hydraulic
flow to the attachment with
the pedal, freeing up your
hands to control depth and
ground speed.
“When using the auger,
for example, I can lock it
and do something else. The
machine holds the attachment where it needs to be.
When I release the pedal, the
machine returns to neutral,”
says Bourdage.
The SK755 accepts more
than 70 attachments for a
wide range of landscaping,
utility, plumbing, and other
underground construction
tasks. An 81-inch hinge-pin
height enables loading of
taller trucks.
An efficient, low-maintenance 24.5 kW (32.8 hp)
Kubota diesel engines provides outstanding power
for all machine functions.
A belt-free design eliminates worries about slipping,
squeaking, and breaking. The
machine is easy to start in
cold weather,” says Bourdage.
“I leave it outside overnight,
so getting it running in the
morning moves my start time
forward.”
The machine’s high-drive
track system features bolton sprockets and wide track
rollers for greater stability,
longer track life, and easy
maintenance.
A low-maintenance track
tensioning system features
a grease cylinder for easy
adjustment and track removal, delivering longer life and
minimizing downtime. “Just
tighten it with a gauge, put
grease gun on it, unscrew the
cap, put gauge on it, and hook
up the grease gun. That’s it,”
explains Bourdage.

Delivers Performance, Higher Productivity
With a maximum output
torque of 4,180 ft-lbs, the new
Digga Compact High-Flow
4DDS Auger Drive, manufactured by Iowa-based Digga
North America, delivers
faster, more powerful performance than comparable
units, claims the company.
The result of more than
30 years of experience in
the design and manufacture of planetary gearboxes
and drives, the Digga 4DDS

output speeds of up to 108
rpm. The result is an ideal
balance of torque and speed
for faster production and a
greater return on investment.
The 4DDS auger drive’s
high-efficiency Digga-designed motor system allows
more of the carrier machine’s
horsepower to be utilized
in delivering power to the
ground for faster drilling
and better spin-off speeds,
allowing operators to more
quickly drill larger-diameter
holes in harsh ground conditions. The motor features

valve that eliminates the need
for bulky valve blocks, while
reducing many potential leak
points. And the sleek, compact gearbox design ensures
that the drive can fit into a
10-in-diameter hole, providing deeper penetration without the need for extensions,
for more efficient operation.
Because it can handle flows
from 30 to 159 litres per
minute (8 to 42 gpm), the
4DDS is truly versatile, fitting
a wide range of skid steers

shaft design that isolates the
planetary gears from pushing,
pulling, and bending forces,
without increasing the load
on the bearings. With the
highest shaft pull-out rating
in the industry and an output
shaft seal that can be replaced
without disassembly of the
planetary gearbox, the 4DDS
will experience less machine
downtime.

Bobcat Company Introduces Model Year 15 3600 & 3650 Utility Vehicles
Bobcat Company has expanded its Model Year (MY)
15 utility vehicle lineup, introducing the new 3600 and 3650
hydrostatic-drive models.
The utility vehicles feature a new 18-kW (24-hp)
Kohler diesel engine—the
same engine used to power
the MY15 3400 and 3400XL
models. The 3600 and 3650
offer industry-leading payload and towing capacity,
e x c ept ion a l du r abi l it y
and optimal comfort yearr ou nd , c l a i m s B ob c at .
Additionally, the 3650 takes
utility vehicle versatility to
a new level with the ability
to operate front-mounted
power-take-off (PTO) and
non-PTO attachments.
The 3600 and 3650 utilit y veh icles ca n ha nd le
and haul more materials
for grounds maintenance
professionals, agriculture
producers or homeowners
with acreage. Hydrostatic
drive is ideal for tasks that
require repetitive back and
forth movements, such as
hauling, mowing, sweeping,
and snow removal. Operators can drive forward or
reverse by pressing their toe
or heel to the travel pedal.
The vehicles can drive forward to a ma x imum top
speed of 50 km/h (30 mph).
OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE
A hydrostatic transmission system offers operators
the best of both worlds by
combining smooth driva bi l it y w it h a du r a ble
suspension. The operator
can choose the setting that
matches the load requirements to achieve optimum
comfort and traction without sacrificing durability.
Another characteristic of
the hydrostatic system is
dynamic braking. When the
operator lets up on the travel
pedal, a valve in the drive
motor closes—blocking the
flow of oil—and slowing the
machine down. This dynamic braking feature makes
the utility vehicles easier to
control when under load.
To achieve good payload
capacity for towing and hauling, the 3600 and 3650 utility
vehicles feature independent
front dual A-arm suspension
with rear de Dion suspen-
sion. This feature improves
the vehicle’s ride comfort
and provides improved stability to haul and tow heavy
loads. Operators can choose
between low- or high-range
speeds for towing heavy
loads or moving light loads
at faster speeds.
AMPLE COMFORT
FEATURES
Comfortably transporting
passengers is primary benefit of the 3600 and 3650 utility vehicles. Tilt steering,
ample legroom and foot
space and three-passenger bench front seat come
standard on the 3600. The
3650 comes standard with
bucket seats and integrated controls for the unique
Multi-Attachment X-Change
(M.A.X.) system.
The M.A.X. system, which
provides integration and
versat ilit y not found on
ordinary utility vehicles.
The 3650 has the capability
of powering front-mounted
PTO-driven attachments,
including an angle broom,
mower and snowblower,
as well as non-PTO attachments such as a bucket,
g rapple, pallet fork and
snow blade. Seven attachments, combined w ith a
maximum lift height of 610
mm (24 inches) and rated
lift capacit y of 225 k ilograms (500 pounds), allow
the 3650 to excel at tasks
such as personal property
m a i nten a nc e, c lea r i ng
snow, and moving palletized
materials.
For even more productivity, a 60-gallon sprayer
accessory can be mounted in
the utility vehicle cargo box.
The cargo box’s composite
material makes it more durable than metallic boxes in
order to handle tough loads,
retain strength, and look
good for years.
For better attachment
control, operators can utilize the throttle independent
of the travel control pedal.
This feature allows operators to set the engine speed
with a throttle rather than
having to use the accelerator
pedal to increase engine
rpm. Separating the two
functions gives operators
the freedom to run powered
attachments more efficiently
with the rpm they require
yet at low travel speeds.
UPTIME PROTECTION
Hydrostatic-drive utility
vehicles use a single twospeed motor with fewer parts,
reducing maintenance costs
for owners. A feature called
automatic engine shutdown
is standard for both models.
The engine in the new utility
vehicles will automatically
shut itself down if it experiences high engine coolant
temperature or high hydraulic oil temperature.
Comfortably transporting passengers is the primary benefit of the 3600 and 3650 utility vehicles.
Strongco and CASE have the equipment to
meet your tightest jobs
Talk about application versatility…
Strongco and CASE know landscaping is much more than manicuring lawns and planting flowers. It’s building
retaining walls, commercial patios and one-of-a-kind outdoor environments while making as little an impact
to the surrounding landscape as possible. Skid steers, compact track loaders and excavators are three of
the most versatile machines a landscaping contractor can own. Strongco is proud to carry CASE’s entire line
of compact equipment with accessories to meet any requirement from tight residential applications to large
commercial projects.

First Tier 4 Final Compact Track Loaders with SCR Technology Features
High Torque, Breakout Force & Standard Auxilliary Hydraulic Flow
Case Construction Equipment introduces the new
TR340 and TV380 compact
track loaders (CTLs): the first
Tier 4 Final CTLs outfitted
with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology.
The TR340 rounds out the
Case lineup of large-frame
CTLs, now providing customers with both a radial-lift
(TR340) and vertical-lift
(TV380) design to choose
from in the larger footprint.
This combination of size,
strength, and flotation is ideal
in earthmoving applications
that require low ground
pressure/minimal ground
disturbance.
The new Tier 4 Final models
feature best-in-class torque,
breakout force, and standard
auxiliary hydraulic flow, as
well as the industry’s widest
cab with best-in-class 360degree visibility, claims Case.
The Case SCR solution
is provided by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (a CNH
Industrial company) and
has proven itself in on-road
trucking, heavy earthmoving
and agricultural applications.
The technology is now being
outfitted to benefit smaller
engine ranges, including CTLs.
“The SCR solution is easy
and relatively hands-off –
operators who remember to
top off their DEF tank while
refuelling will notice no other
day-to-day changes,” says
Warren Anderson, Brand
Marketing Manager, Case
Construction Equipment.
“There is no diesel particulate filter (DPF) to maintain
or replace, and SCR allows
for a more efficient use of fuel
as all diesel is consumed in
productive effort instead of
regeneration.”
SCR is an after-treatment
system that lowers exhaust
temperatures and does not
use fuel to burn off particulate matter. SCR technology
is more efficient and requires
less maintenance than DPFs,
as it does not require filter
replacement or upkeep, explains Case. It also removes
complexity for operators
and maintenance staff by
eliminating regeneration
associated with DPFs.
HEAVY-DUTY FEATURES
Case offers new heavy-duty
features on each model as
standard equipment. This
includes a heavy-duty 950

add strength and reliability
in all working conditions.
EZ-EH CONTROLS
ALLOW FLEXIBILITY
The TR340 and TV380 offer
an EZ-EH (electro-hydraulic)
setup menu with nine adjustable speed and control
sensitivity settings that can
be adjusted effortlessly as applications change. This allows
the operator to match controls
to their preference for comfort

Husqvarna Unveils Ideas for the Future of Professional Landscaping
Husqvarna has unveiled a
prototype of a lithium battery
with integrated Bluetooth
connectivity—a connected
battery. Tools equipped with
the new battery prototype will
be able to share valuable information about themselves
to their user.
The battery prototype can
easily be paired with an operator’s smartphone or a smart
watch, to either provide the
operator direct information,
or to pass on information to
other members of the team,
such as other operators, managers, technicians, or dealers.
“Battery and connectivity
constitute the biggest leap in
our industry since motorizing
outdoor products,” says Kai
Wärn, CEO and President
of the Husqvarna Group.
“The connected battery and
our concept hedge trimmer
demonstrate Husqvarna’s
commitment to pioneer high
performing battery products
and leverage the possibilities
of the Internet of Things.”
MULTIPLE BENEFITS
OF REAL-TIME DATA
The requirement for landscapers to increase productivity and end-results calls for
high-performing and efficient
tools. When powering tools
with intelligence, landscapers can start developing new
ways of working. For example,
avoiding downtime by shifting
from reactive maintenance
if a machine breaks down,
to proactive maintenance,
as the tools themselves can
alert and prepare managers
and technicians when they
need service.
Other examples of opportunities from real-time data
provided by the connected
battery prototype:
ƒƒ
Improving skills. Tools can
give direct feedback and
guidance on how to use
them, helping operators to
refine their technique as
well as help beginners use
the tool in a professional
and optimized way faster.
ƒƒ
Improving safety. The new
battery opens up new
opportunities to improve
user safety, as well as to
prevent theft by locking
your machine so someone
else cannot use it.
ƒƒ
Improving team communications. Getting an
instant overview enables
team leaders to go from
‘how did we do today’
to ‘how are we doing
right now’ and thus be
more flexible in adjusting
directives or allocating
resources differently if
something unexpected
happens.
ƒƒ
Improving planning. With
the data and insights provided by the connected
battery, team leaders will
have better intelligence to
support their planning,
both short and long term.
The prototype of the
connected battery and the
Husqvarna Ramus concept
hedge trimmer was unveiled
on September 30 at an international event about the
New Heavy-Duty Rancher Body
Designed for Maximum Durability
Rugby Manufacturing recently introduced an all-new
Rugby HD Rancher Body,
which is suited for heavier
duty construction and landscape applications, as well as
oil field operations.
Designed for maximum
durability, the HD Rancher
offers several enhanced
features including an upgraded 4.8-mm (0.2-inch)
tread plate floor, seven gauge
formed crossmembers with
305-mm (12-inch) spacing,
12-gauge bulkhead sheet
and a 9.5-mm (0.4-inch) tie
down rail.
The HD Rancher is also
available with a B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch
that allows a flat surface with
no cutouts in the floor.
Five models of the new Rugby HD Rancher are available ranging in
length from 9.25 feet to 12 feet (2.82 to 3.66 metres).
future of landscaping, held
by Husqvarna in Antwerp,
Belgium. The prototype of the
connected battery is currently
patent-pending and further
details are to be defined.
HUSQVARNA FLEET
SERVICES
Husqvarna deployed connectivity to outdoor power
products first in 2014 with
the introduction of ‘Husqvarna Fleet Services’, an online
service platform that supports
landscaping professionals
with data from smart sensors
added on to products. The
aim is to integrate the new
connected battery with Husqvarna Fleet Services when
available to the market.
And just now, Husqvarna is
launching a smartphone app
version of Husqvarna Fleet
Services that further supports
work in the field and increases crew involvement. For example, the new app allows
team leaders and operators
to access assignment details
on the map and even record
and submit new business
opportunities identified by
the operators while working
in the field.
To manifest the belief in the potential from battery and connectivity,
Husqvarna has also created ‘Husqvarna Ramus’—an intelligent and
super light futuristic concept hedge trimmer that employs the same
technology as in Husqvarna’s connected battery prototype.

New MT85 Mini Track Loader Features Improved
Rated Operating Capacity, Lifting Height & Reach
Bobcat Company introduces the all-new MT85 mini
track loader, expanding its
compact equipment lineup,
after it introduced its first
mini track loader—the
MT52—more than a decade
ago. The Bobcat® MT85 boasts
more power, increased lifting
capabilities, additional stability and durable components
to help operators efficiently
complete everyday or challenging tasks in limited-space
jobsites.
Bobcat MT85 mini track
loaders are designed for professionals in landscaping and
rental, followed by construction, buildings and grounds,
and agriculture applications.
These individuals will benefit from the new mini track
loader and its attachment
versatility. Owners can use
the MT85 as a stand-alone
machine or pair it with other
Bobcat compact equipment
to efficiently complete a variety of projects.
The MT85 has a 35% higher
rated operating capacity
(ROC) than prior mini track
loader iterations—rated
at 850 pounds (383 kilograms)—to lift, carry, and
dump materials. For additional productivity, MT85
operators can lift materials
higher with an increase of
12% in lift height. For hard
digging conditions, the lift
arm breakout force has been
increased by 29% from the
smaller MT55 mini track
loader.
Operators can accomplish
more than previous iterations
of Bobcat mini track loaders,
thanks to an efficient hydraulic system that produces fast
cycle times, impressive tractive effort, strong hydraulic
breakout force, and exceptional pushing and digging
abilities.
Built with the same standards that Bobcat compact
equipment owners have
come to expect from the
industry leader, the MT85
is a dependable and rugged
mini track loader. Bobcat
engineers designed the new
MT85 based on the similar
mini track loaders that have
been popular machines for
more than a decade. Input
from Bobcat mini track loader
customers led the company
to design a machine that is
taller, with greater ground
clearance and an additional 6
inches of track length on the
ground for added stability,
without sacrificing the quality
design aspects from prior
iterations.
A change from prior Bobcat
mini track loaders, the new

MT85 is designed with dual
ISO joystick controls. The
loader’s drive function is
controlled by the left-hand
joystick. The right-hand joystick controls the loader’s lift
and tilt functions. Gauges and
dials on the loader’s dash
panel remain unchanged
from the MT55.
A new operator presence/
safety pedal regulates the
auxiliary hydraulic flow for
use with approved attachments. The pedal must be
engaged when the operator
is using an attachment with
detent hydraulic flow, such
as trenching, snowblowing,
digging holes with an auger or
pushing / sweeping material
with an angle broom.
RIDE-ON PLATFORM
A standard ride-on platform gives operators better
visibility to the front-mounted attachment, such as the
loader bucket’s cutting edges,
and the work area to help
them be more productive.
The platform for the MT85
was designed to help operators easily access the mini
track loader controls, especially for taller operators,
thereby reducing operator
fatigue.
Additional comfort features
include a roller on the back
of the loader frame to help
reduce vibration and provide
a smoother ride; standard
hip pads; larger grab handles
for getting on and off of the
loader; and a cup holder.
A storage compartment is
located on the left side of the
operator for convenience.
Another performance
benefit of the new ride-on
platform is a higher forward
travel speed of 4 mph—an
increase of 23%—and 2.3
mph when operating in reverse. Increased travel speed
is particularly useful in liftand-carry applications where
the operator needs to move
bulk materials from point A
to point B.
Bobcat MT85 mini track
loader operators can easily
access the engine compartment for routine maintenance. The loader’s drivetrain,
service points and cooling
package remain the same
as the smaller MT55 mini
track loader, making it easy
for prior Bobcat mini track
loader operators to easily
identify and service routine
maintenance items.
Also unchanged from prior
iterations of Bobcat mini
track loaders is the spring
tension track system. After
years of proven reliability on
smaller mini track loaders,
The MT85 has a 35% higher rated operating capacity (ROC) than
prior mini track loader iterations—rated at 850 pounds (383 kilograms)—to lift, carry, and dump materials.
this industry proven system
will be adapted on the MT85.
A new option for the MT85
mini track loader is the
common industry interface
(CII). The CII will allow customers who are accustomed
to this pin on design to retain
the familiarity of their chosen
interface and have it matched
to a Bobcat mini track loader.
Unique in the mini track
loader industry, the time-tested and popular Bob-Tach
attachment mounting system
will still be available for the
MT85, if customers prefer.
One of the benefits of the
Bob-Tach system is the ability
to swap attachments from
the MT85 to other approved
carriers such as the Bobcat
S70 skid-steer loader. There
are more than 20 approved
Bobcat attachments for use
with mini track loaders with
the Bob-Tach attachment
mounting system.
BUILT FOR
CONFINED JOBSITES
The Bobcat MT85 mini
track loader can turn within
its tracks, with minimal turf
damage, to complete projects
where larger machines can’t
fit. Owners can choose between two widths (36 inches
(914 mm)) with narrow tracks
or (44 inches (1118 mm))
with wide tracks—to best
match their application. Its
compact size, which is ideal
for traveling through fence
gates, backyard projects or
other tight areas, makes the
MT85 a smart choice to replace tasks previously done
with manual labour and hand
tools.

All Jets are Flying—Examining the Pacchiosi Jet Grouting System & Its Use on the Eglinton LRT Construction
By: James Burt
A look across Toronto’s
Eglinton Avenue’s many
Light Rail Transit (LRT)
construction sites reveals
many tall towers of various
colours. While they appear
to be storage facilities or mini
water towers similar to those
seen in small communities,
Metrolinx Surface and Service Manager Chris Stewart
reveals them to be more
complex equipment pieces
of the LRT’s development.
“Yes, those towers are the
Pacchiosi Jet Grouting units
that we’re using now,” he says.
“Actually, we’re pretty much
done with them on Eglinton
west of Yonge. But you’ll still
see them all along the eastof-Yonge Eglinton Avenue
direction in various locations.”
Along with several large
tunnel-boring units, the
Pacchiosi Jet Grouting units
are some of the most unique
and key equipment pieces of
the LRT project’s completion.
They’ve been necessary for
the proper tunneling process
of the LRT, allowing for stabilizing the tunnels themselves.
Developed and headquartered in the Sissa region of
Parma Province, Italy, the
Pacchiosi is a premium
machine that utilizes jet
grouting—soil consolidation and waterproofing soilfilled areas through a drilling
mechanism—which is essential for the waterproofing the
LRT’s underground tunnel.
Their jet grout system, or
‘spa’, injects cement at high
velocities against the soil of
a tunnel wall, allowing for
internal construction of rail
and electrical work to take

place thereafter. In the past,
Pacchiosi’s jet grout systems
have been used in underground construction projects
in places as varied as France,
Spain, Japan, and the US.
“A Pacchiosi unit has been
erected pretty much between
each tunnel portion of the
LRT, at the site of where each
new station will stand,” Stewart explains. “The jet grouting
process is necessary for us to
solidify the tunnel and once
we’re done boring it out. We
can grout in new cement
blocks with it and have a
full formed tunnel that’s reinforced with concrete once
we’re done with it.”
Despite it large size and use
of towers and large generator
units, Stewart goes on to note

that an advantage of using the
Pacchiosi is that it works well
with a lot of the other large
and small scale equipment
used onsite at various points
of the LRT working areas.
“Overall, the whole units
fit well between utilities to
create structures at low levels.
Unlike the large tunnel-boring machine, the Pacchiosi
has a small drill bit diameter
and doesn’t operate on such a
large scale as other tunneling
machines. You can bore out
what you need and then fit the
concrete with the jet grout.”

machines for the LRT project ground conditions the prowere shipped in from Quebec
and now that much of the
tunneling work has been
completed, fewer machines
are needed at present.
Stewarts does make note
that despite the Pachiossi’s
qualities, it’s not always easy
to establish at each job site
and many considerations
have to be made before one
can be erected and put into
operation.
“Obviously these units
are bulky and take up a lot
of street space, so you have
to get the right permits and
traffic coordination or control
when setting them up and
using them in the same place
for as long as we have.”
Stewart goes further to
note that while versatile, the

ject is taking place on. While
they’re great for certain soil
types, they don’t work so well
will heavy water-flow soils like
clays and usually aren’t used
for jobs in those areas.”
Since they are such a big
component of the LRT project as a whole, operators of
the Pacchiosi are especially
trained in each unit’s safe
handling and operation.
“The operators we’re using
are from Europe,” says Stewart. “And have had training
both in Italy from Pacchiois
headquarters and through the
workers’ union here too. You
really need the right people to
work with this sort of heavy
duty piece of equipment. One
that’s got a specific purpose
for a specific job like ours.”

A Two-Stage Cutting Chamber, Staggered Counter Teeth, Better Performance
As part of its VMLogix line
of products, Loftness introduces the Carbide Cutter G3
high-performance mulching
head attachment for skid
steer loaders. This new generation product incorporates
the latest cutting-tooth technologies and power drive systems, while maintaining the
rugged reliability expected of
Loftness equipment.
The Carbide Cutter G3 is
available with 1.30-, 1.55-,
and 1.80-metre (51-, 61-, and
71-inch) cutting widths. All
models are offered with a
variety of carbide-tipped
and heat-treated steel teeth
to match a variety of job
applications. The precisely engineered spiral tooth
pattern on the rotor ensures
continuous tooth contact
with the material being cut.
For good cutting performance, the Carbide Cutter G3
features a two-stage cutting
chamber with staggered
counter teeth and a shear
bar. This combination of
features results in small
particle sizes, while elim-
inating the jamming and
wrapping issues associated
with competitive products.
An optional primary-stage
shear bar is also available
for ultra-fine mulching.
The mulching heads operate at 1,700 to 2,150 rpm, and
feature a four-groove banded
belt drive with spring-loaded
tensioner. They come standard with a fixed-displacement, piston-style motor that
delivers hydraulic power at
97% efficiency, which is much
higher than traditional geartype motors offer, claims the
manufacturer.
The fixed-displacement
motor can be upg raded
to the innovative V-Drive
system that includes a variable-displacement motor
with load-sensing technology. Under light loads, the
V-Drive system operates
at maximum rpm, and as
the load increases, it automatically lowers the rotor
rpm to maximize torque.
The Carbide Cutter G3 is
also designed for durability.
For instance, high-strength
Terex’s Smallest Compact Track
Loader Ideal for Landscape
Hardox steel is used in
areas exposed to high wear.
Furthermore, the Carbide
Cutter G3 is equipped with
a custom hydraulic control
valve that protects the unit
from pressure spikes, and it
also stops the rotor quickly on
shut-down without damaging
the components.
Other standard features
include an on-board pressure
gauge, steel deflector chains,
and adjustable skid shoes.
Tooth options include standard carbide teeth, planer
carbide teeth and Quadco
planer blades.
The Loftness Carbide Cutter G3 mulching head offers full rotation due to a specially designed hose routing.
This feature also allows the unit to easily position trees. The push bar can be used to push falling brush
and trees away from the power unit, and the claw hooks can pull material into position for proper feeding.

A Breed Apart: Mack Trucks Drive Hollywood Feed’s Premium Pet Product Success
Memphis business owner
Shawn McGhee believes in
being the best, and that culture
of excellence has resulted in
astronomical growth for his
company, Hollywood Feed.
Today, he is reshaping the pet
industry and setting a new
standard for his customers.
It is no coincidence that
when he decided to operate
his own, in-house fleet, Mack
trucks were his equipment of
choice for reliability, reputation and cost efficiency.
There was another benefit:
The bright yellow Mack Pinnacles are so eye-catching
that they have become an
integral part of Hollywood
Feed’s branding campaign.
McGhee is no stranger
to success. He rose rapidly
through the managerial
ranks of both AutoZone and
Office Depot, and when his
keen eye spotted three failing feed stores, he knew he
could make them profitable.
In 2006, he purchased the
stores and revamped them
from the ground up.
Today, Hollywood Feed focuses exclusively on premium
products for dogs and cats,
with more than 40 stores in
five states—Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas
and Texas. McGhee expects
to build 20 new stores in
2016. Revenue is increasing
by 40-50% per year.
“If we can’t do something
really well, we don’t do it at
all,” he says.
Keeping costs down was
a top priorit y, but when
McGhee ran the numbers, he
realized he could get better
service at a lower price if
he operated his own fleet
rather than relying on a
carrier. There was an added
advantage, too: The stores
are busy in the daytime and
parking is scarce, but if he
hired his own drivers, he
could schedule overnight,
unattended deliveries.
He started out with another OEM, but in 2013, he
called Tri-State Truck Center
in Memphis. The company
was growing fast, and he
needed equipment better
suited for his operation.
After exhaustive research,
he decided Mack Trucks
could take Hollywood Feed’s
distribution to the next level.
He currently holds full-service leases on five Mack Pinnacle models and plans to
rotate them out every four
to five years.
“We chose Mack because
on how to grow his company,
coming up with new ways
to delight pet owners and
improve the lives of their
animals.

of the reputation and reliability,” McGhee says. “We drove
other brands, but we weren’t
happy with the drivability and
cab accessories. Our drivers
love the Macks.”
Each tractor and trailer is

needs, says Eric Fite, Vice
President of Tri-State Truck
Center in Memphis.
The biggest challenge was
spec’ing the right wheelbase size and trailer size to
maximize payload and man-
oeuvrability. They decided
to go with an extra-short,
extra-wide trailer 42 feet (12.8
metres) long with an interior
of 100 inches (2.5 metres)
wide. Because every minute
counts toward the bottom
line, McGhee had 250-300
gallon fuel tanks installed,
minimizing the frequency
of fuel stops.
And he had one more request: He wanted his drivers
to be as happy and comfortable as possible. The cabs are
equipped with microwaves,

“They’ve got a ton of bells
and whistles on those trucks,”
Fite says. “It’s unusual for
someone to pay that much
attention, but McGhee didn’t
mind paying extra for lots
of small options to keep his
drivers happy.”
Happy drivers mean low
turnover and recruiting
costs and greater customer
satisfaction. His drivers are
proud to drive the flashy,
bright yellow trucks with the
canine theme. A massive red
paw is emblazoned on the
hood, right behind the Mack
Bulldog. The trailers are built
by Great Dane and feature
the Great Dane logo on the
rear door, along with a large
dog silhouette and the word,
“Woof!” The sides feature
more silhouettes of dogs.
The positive brand image
extends to customers who say
they like the trucks so much
that they take photographs
when they see them on the
road, tagging Hollywood Feed
on social media.
“The trucks are a nice
adjunct to the business,”
McGhee says. “They get a lot
of attention. Our trucks are
the nicest on the road.”
As the company grows,
McGhee anticipates adding
more Macks to the fleet and
appreciates his relationship
with his dealer.
“Mack handles the whole
fleet maintenance equation,”
he says. “We don’t even think
about it. We don’t have any
mechanics on staff. We entrust Mack with the service
and care.”
McGhee focuses instead
A DIFFERENT BREED
The company’s tagline
is “A different breed,” and
McGhee personally oversees
every product they sell and
is constantly seeking fun
and innovative solutions for
his growing clientele. They
have had great success with
the Mississippi Made line of
dog beds, and they are now
making collars and leashes
from the leftover bedding
material.
McGhee’s main focus
is improving the lives and
well-being of companion
animals, and employee education is a critical component.
Each of the company’s 250
employees starts out with 80
hours of training in animal
nutrition and health, taught
by veterinarians, researchers
and nutritionists, and they
receive an additional 40 hours
of instruction per year.
And they are not just
spouting textbook knowledge
either. Each employee receives up to 225 kilograms
(500 pounds) of food per
month, with Hollywood Feed
providing food for around
1,200 employee-owned dogs.
Their pets are allowed free
rein in the store, with sometimes as many as 20 dogs
roaming the building, acting
as four-footed ambassadors.
“We believe in our product,”
McGhee says. “We buy it, we
feed it, we support it. We have
a passion for pets.”
That passion extends to the
community, with Hollywood
Feed donating a significant
amount of time and money
to charitable causes, from
animal adoptions to providing
free doghouses and straw for
dogs left outside in the cold
Tennessee winters.
Outsiders might expect
such largesse to be costly—
and it is—but through hard
work and business savvy,
Holly wood Feed should
continue to grow for decades
to come.
“God blessed me with the
ability to absorb and understand where opportunities may
lie,” McGhee says. “We think
about the business at a level I
don’t think many companies
do. We focus always on quality.
We want to be the best.”

World Demand for Mining Equipment
to Approach $105 Billion in 2019
Global demand for mining
equipment is forecast to
expand 7% annually to nearly
$105 billion in 2019.
Growth in mining equipment sales during the 20092014 period was erratic,
a result of the volatility of
commodity prices and the
resultant effect on mining
machinery investment. Increases in manufacturing
output, especially in the developing world, and renewed
strength in construction activity in much of the developed
world will support mining
equipment sales gains.
These and other trends are
presented in World Mining
Equipment, a new study from
The Freedonia Group, Inc.,
a Cleveland-based industry
research firm.
The developing world
will continue to post robust
gains in mining equipment
demand, as overall lack of
mechanization rates in
these countries drive purchases. In addition, many
developing countries have
significant metals and coal
mining industries that require
substantial levels of capital
investment. These include
nations in the Asia/Pacific
region and Central and South
America, which have large
metals mining industries, and
Global demand for mining equipment is forecast to expand 7%
annually to nearly $105 billion in 2019.
in Eastern Europe and the
Africa/Mideast region, which
are sizable coal producing
areas.
China is by far the largest
national market for mining
equipment, with sales more
than doubling between 2009
and 2014. Rapid increases
in manufacturing output
and construction activity in
the country, as well as government efforts to boost the
mechanization of China’s
mines, led to torrid growth
historically, and advances
will remain above average
through 2019.
According to analyst Kyle
Peters, “Although it will
remain a much smaller
market than China, India
will record the fastest gains
of any country, as there is
still a significant need for
mine mechanization. Mining
output growth in India will
be among the strongest in
the world.”
The developed countries of
North America and Western
Europe will experience more
modest growth through 2019,
although mining equipment
demand in Western Europe
will accelerate from the 20092014 period as the region’s
construction industry rebounds from a decade-long
decline. The majority of
mining activity in these nations is of aggregates, which
require less capital spending
per metric ton of output than
metals or coal.
In addition, coal consumption and associated mining
output are falling in many
industrialized countries, as
regulatory mandates lead to
greater use of other energy
sources.
The Team at Equipment Journal would like to thank our avid readers and loyal customers for another successful year!
We wish you all great success, prosperity and a very happy new year in 2016!

Ontario Contractor Puts 30,000 Hours on His Favourite Attachment
Chute Construction, based
out of Brantford, Ontario, has
put approximately 30,000
hours on the company’s original RT60 Rototilt tiltrotator.
“That Rototilt never comes
off the machine; it stays on
365 days a year,” explains
company co-owner, Tyler
Chute. “Even if we work with
concrete or in frost, we still
use it. Depending on the
application, we just change
the bucket. With the Rototilt,
we eliminate the need for
another machine.”
Chute Construction is a
fully equipped contractor
of large and sma l l residential, commercial, and
industrial projects. They
provide rough grading, final
grading, fill removal, complete site preparation, and
designing services, as well
as landscaping, drainage
and demolition services.
The company purchased
the RT60, as well as another
Rototilt, back in 2002.
“At the time, we had been
looking for years for a way
to perform our grade jobs
better,” says Chute. “We
had considered a ditching
bucket, but decided to pay
the higher price and purchase a Rototilt.”
According to Chute, it
did not take long for the
company to see big benefits
to their investment. “Immediately, we decreased
our ground crew from two
to one. Also, moving objects
fastened by chain to the excavator is easier and now
we can get a solid grip of
armour stones when we use
our grapple. Placing stones
is also now a breeze.”
Excavating and grading
are the company’s main line
of work. “When digging a
basement, we can get the
mach i ne l i ned up w it h
the wall, and don’t have to
manoeuvre the excavator to
the perfect spot ,” explains
Chute. “Also, on the grading end, with the Rototilt,
we can do swails or grade
in a front or back yard. We
can’t fit a dozer in between
houses, but we can fit an
excavator. We used to put
2,000 hours on a dozer each
year, but now we don’t even
put 400 hours a year. We
no longer have a full-time
dozer operator, and we don’t
have to float another piece
of machinery to a jobsite. By
using an excavator equipped
with a Rototilt instead of a
dozer, we save about $60,000
each year. And, equipment
maintenance and purchases
costs are down, because
our dozer lasts longer. We
used to change out the dozer
every 4 to 5 years, but since
purchasing the Rototilts, our
dozer has lasted 15 years.
The Rototilt also comes
in handy when working to
contain demolit ion materials following a fire. In
fact, Chute Construction is
often in called in to assist
the Fire Marshall’s office.
“ We’l l get t he c a l l a nd
they’ll want a machine on
site right then,” says Tim
Chute, who co-manages
the company with Tyler.
The Rototilt eliminates the
need for a swinging crane
and allows sensitive areas
to be contained more easily.
