Bell Matilda Raffa Cuomo Mercedes Ellington The New York based non-profit Pajama Program reached a milestone last year by providing one million new pajamas and new books to children in need in New York City and across the country. Our Reading Room plays an important role in helping local children – every year for the past ten years over 1,000 children have enjoyed special one-on-one reading sessions with volunteers at our current space at 34 East 39th St. The waitlist of children wanting to read at the center has grown huge and we want to accommodate all of them. We are moving to a larger space to provide this special experience for 3,000 children who will now be able to participate! You have to see the huge smiles on the children’s faces when they receive what is often their very first pair of PJs and their very own new book! Many write us touching thank-you notes that we hold on to and treasure. We are seeking special funding to support this specific endeavor for the children and are thrilled to announce Naming opportunities for our new Pajama Program Reading Center! Giving children their own books offers them a continued early reading experience. Most of the children we serve have been removed from school for long periods of time and do not have access to books to continue their reading practice. Their reading skills are far lower than their peers. Providing these children reading practice and their own books offers them a continued early reading experience they desperately need. The children live at or below the poverty level and are living in orphanages, group homes, homeless shelters and City and State-operated living quarters. They look forward to their regular visits to our Reading Center, as do our volunteers and staff. Children visit in groups of 5-30. We read to the children individually and in groups. The reading sessions are 45 minutes each, followed by snacks, and then distribution of new pajamas and a book which are wrapped individually marked with each child’s name. At the end of their visit the children always ask us, “When do we have to give these back?” “Never,” we are thrilled to tell them! There are always delightful squeals, and loud oohs and ahhs when they enter the big room that seems to spontaneously embrace them with love and affection. Our Reading Room walls have giant, vibrant murals with characters that look as if they could come to life any minute… bookshelves filled with enchanting books for all ages … and stacks of soft, cozy pajamas with the children’s favorite characters on them! The floor is covered with soft mats so the children can settle down and relax with the books they choose to read. Children visit our Reading Center regularly in groups of 20-30. We invite volunteers to read with them and always hope to have one volunteer per child for optimum benefit to each child. The reading sessions last 45 -60 minutes, followed by snacks, and then the most anticipated part of the session – the presentation to each child, one by one by name, of a specially chosen pair of new pajamas and a new book tied in a pretty ribbon! This presentation is exciting for the children as they wait to hear their names called, and then walk up to the volunteer to take their gift amidst resounding applause! The children are then told they can go to the bookshelves and choose more books to take with them. We have been attending the Pajama Program since October, 2010. The children have improved in their listening skills, and their love for books. Each month, the children look forward to the monthly read. In October when we started the program, some of the children appeared withdrawn, shy, and others even cried. In our observation of the class, during our once a month visits, we saw growth in each individual child. They began to get excited about the program, especially when they a receive a new book, and pajamas! Stephanie Campbell and Yokasta Luna, Mid-Bronx Head Start Children’s Gallery Room Hundreds of photos, drawings, notes and cards from children who have received books and pajamas and who have visited our Pajama Program Reading Center are on display in our Children’s Gallery Room. The walls are jam-packed with bright, hand-colored letters and pictures that give us a sense of joy and compassion as we read each one. Book Nook The Book Nook is the area of our Reading Room where the bookshelves and stacks of bedtime stories are waiting for the children! Giving children their own books offers them a continued early reading experience. Our books and reading time serve the added role of providing a resource for bed-time stories – an important element in fostering a nurturing climate for the children. The children visit our Center for reading sessions. They receive several books to keep and a brand new pair of pajamas. We work regularly with hundreds of facilities to distribute books and to help the children improve their reading skills. Pajama Rama Lots of pajamas fill this area of the Reading Room as we wait for the children’s sessions to begin! Many of you have met some of our children…read to them…helped them put on their pajamas right away – even if it’s 12 noon. They just want to put them on because they’re clean and warm … and they fit just right. Too many of the children who read at our Pajama Program Reading Center have been abused and neglected… never knowing what it’s like to have a mom or dad to tuck them into bed at night. The pajamas we give them help them feel loved and comforted – like a good night hug. Pajamas on Mural Our artist is designing a string of pajamas to look like they’re hanging in the breeze on our mural wall! Your company name, your name, or a child’s name, will be drawn on one of the pajamas. Books on Mural Book Tower Our artist is drawing stacks of our children’s favorite books for our mural! Bedtime storybooks, nursery rhymes, adventure books, mysteries, books on sports heroes, chapter books and more will be piled high on our wall! Your company name, your name, or a child’s name, will be drawn on one of the book spines. Teen Scene The tweens and teens make up a very special group within Pajama Program. We focus on continuity for the “forgotten category,” ages 10-17 who have little chance of adoption. Our “Teen Scene” room is their special place to read, separate from the children’s Reading Room which is filled with artwork, mural and storybook figures. Teen Scene will be designed and decorated to reflect the older children’s favorite things. These children have been through great trauma and struggle to belong and to feel loved by others. Pajama Program Reading Center visits take on a meaning beyond providing comfort in pajamas and books. The personal contact offers love and nurturing and is a reminder to these children that someone cares, that they are not forgotten. Thank you to all our sponsors who will make the new and beautiful Pajama Program Reading Center, NYC, a MAGICAL haven for the children! Thank you for all the warmth your program has shown to Hour Children, it's always a major discussion on our travels back, where you here the children talking about the great time they had, some will be reading their books, while others would be comparing characters on their pajamas, it always refreshing to see the light in their eyes whenever I announce Pajama Program time. We appreciate you guys a lot.
