A Garage Sale Stroll
We're not only San Diego's #1 Swap Meet, last month Kobey's was voted San Diego's #1 Antique
Store in the yearly UT-San Diego's reader's poll beating out some recognized establishments. We
took a stroll on a recent weekend to see what we would find. We found these items on rows E-H
on a typical Saturday morning.
Survival guide for swap meet shopping
Each weekend since 1976,
families have gathered to spend
time at Kobey’s Swap Meet
searching for treasures.
By following a few tips, families can make the most of their
time and enjoy the Kobey's
experience together.
These are some considerations that should be made
before heading out:
1) Make a list of the items
you would like to find as well as
the maximum amount you are
willing to pay for them.
2) The key to scoring a sought
after item is to arrive early. “Window shopping” can wait until
after finding items you want.
3) Bring a bag to carry purchases as well as cash. Small bills
and change are a good idea.
4) For an optimum swap
meet experience, one should
wear comfortable clothing,
especially sturdy shoes.
“You might not believe it,
but you could walk over one
mile on any given Saturday or
Sunday,” said Anthony Pretto,
current manager at Kobey’s
and grandson of founder,
Monte Kobey.
5) Plenty of sunscreen is
important, as well as a hat and
sunglasses for sun protection.
6) Customers shouldn’t be
afraid to barter if they think the
price is higher than they want to
pay. It's all part of the fun. Customers enhance their bargaining
skills with practice.
“It’s a swap meet, so it’s okay
to haggle with certain items. It’s
expected,” Pretto said.
“We have a large following
of antique dealers who shop at
Kobey’s every weekend looking for dressers, artwork, home
goods, collectibles and so much
more."
Kobey’s is a great way to
spend time with family or
friends for a few hours. You
might find some old records,
buy a bouquet of flowers, a new
bed for the dog or some cool
t-shirts. What will you find?
