THE OONZI
STORY
The 1960's were rough-and-tumble times
for offshore racing. V-bottom design and
fiberglass boat building technology were
still emerging, and grueling ocean courses
that spanned hundreds of miles through
perilous seas often bested drivers and boats.
Champion racers were larger-than-! ife
heroes, and during those times, the most
prominent names in racing seemed to share
one address: NE 188th Street in North
Miami, FL. "Thunderboat Row" was what
they called it, and World Champion racer
Don Aronow presided over it all.
During his illustrious career, Aronow created Formula, Cigarette, Magnum, and a
handful of others, but in 1963 he was hard
at work bringing Donzi to life. The first
Donzis were 28-foot ocean racers. Gaining
notoriety in the 1963 and '64 Miami-Key
West and Miami-Nassau races, they were
grudgingly referred to by the competition as
those "Damned Donzis".
In 1964 Aronow debuted his first Donzi
"Sweet 16" a boat with distinctive low-profile styling and a race-proven bottom. This
boat would serve as the blueprint for Donzi
models for years to come. Early Aronow
designs included the Ski Sporter and the St.
Tropez, and by the time Aronow sold the
company to marine-accessories conglomerate Teleflex, the Donzi reputation as a fast
boat with great lines was clearly established.
Teleflex stayed the course that Aronow had
plotted for Donzi, introducing 14' and 18'
variants of the original Sweet 16. In 1967
two former Teleflex executives John and
Tim Chisholm bought Donzi, with the goal
of infusing the classic Donzi style with a
more "European" element. Models introduced during their stewardship included
the Criterion and Corsican, models still
lauded by enthusiasts today.
In 1985, jack Staples and former Chris Craft
president Dick Genth acquired Donzi, with
the goal of increasing Donzi's low-volume
production of roughly 50 boats per year.
Donzi left Miami in favor of Sarasota, many

new models were introduced, a solid dealer network was put in place, and production was increased to nearly 400 boats
annuall y. During this time, the Donzi "Z"
line of performance boats was created, with
the Z-33 Crossbow being one of the most
sought-after performance boats of the
1980's.
In 1988, marine-industry conglomerate
OMC took the helm, with the goal of transforming Donzi into a true mass production
operation. An infusion of working capital
led to the creation of a family of Donzi
bowriders and further expansion of the
product line, but OMC's attempt to transform Donzi came at the perhaps the worst
possible time, as boat sales were in a period of unprecedented decline. In the end,
OMC's management approach proved to be
less than ideally compatible with the Donzi
customer base.
In 1993, American Marine Holdings
stepped in. Chairman & CEO Lee Kimmell
and President Mike Collins established a
clear plan to return Donzi to its former
prominence. Bringing Steve Simon aboard
to oversee new product development,
Donzi found itself in the midst of its most
substantial overhaul in its history.
Today, Donzi produces a more diverse
range of models than ever before, all
designed and built with the company's original mandate of outstanding performance,
quality construction, and enduring style. If
the public has been quick to take notice of
Donzi's resurrection, the media hasn't been
far behind, bestowing awards and accolades on new Donzi models almost as fast
as the company can develop them .
In its 40th year, Donzi continues to expand
its horizons and build on its hard-earned
reputation as an innovator. Whether blurring the lines between fishing boat and sport
cruiser with the new 38ZF, or dominating
the competition in the 38ZR, Donzi is leading the pack in 2004 just like they were in
1964. Some things never change!

the Southern Kingfish Association,
winning three Angler of the Year titles
and three National Championships in
the past five years. In addition, a 66.8pounder caught last year aboard a

largest King Mackerel ever taken in

Custom Tops
Donzi fabricates custom T-tops and
arches in its own alum inum shop,
using a patented anodized aluminum
extrusion for distinctive style and great
durability. Our T-tops bolt through the
cockpit floor and are secured directly
into the stringer system via beefy aluminum backing plates. Additionally,
they are thru-bolted into the conso le in
four locations. Finally, Donzi canvas
is sewn in-house using weather-resistant Sunbrella canvas, which comes
with a five-year manufacturer's warranty.

Donzi 's rich, deep-pile carpets are
made of co lorfast 40 oz. polypropylene for long-lasting looks, and cockpit
carpets are removable for easy cleaning and storage.

Steel -the highest-grade marine stainless avai lable, so it's highly resistant to
pitting and corrosion. All hardware is
through-bolted utilizing heavy duty

and marine-grade sealant to prevent
against water penetration.

Donzi applies BASF Diamant paint the same type used by Mercedes Benz,
Porsche and BMW- in a dust-free, climate-controlled paint booth . Donzi's
attention to detail guarantees crisp,
vivid graphics, and four layers of
clearcoat and a special finishing
process provide a durable and lustrous
finish. Customers may choose from
one of the regularly offered graphics
packages, or work with a Donzi
designer to create a one-of-a-kind
graphic for their Donzi.

were able to make our ZXs deeper, wider, and
far more luxurious than competitive offerings
while at the same time offering the speed and
handling you'd expect from a boat wearing the
Donzi name.

Like all Donzi models, each ZX is truly handbuilt, a combination of high tech materials and
old-world craftsmanship executed with unrelenting attention to detail. Perhaps that's why
our ZX models have earned six Powerboat
Magazine "Boat of the Year" awards in the last
five years. But don't just take Powerboat's
word for it. In addition to routinely gracing
the pages of boating publications, you'll find
our ZXs proving themselves in exemplary fashion in poker runs across North America, not to
mention their frequent appearances on television and in major motion pictures.
How did we improve on one of the most
acclaimed lines of offshore perform ance boats
in the industry? By offering more choices to
our customers. For 2004, we're offering new
optional Gaffrig racing controls, Mercury's ITS
extension boxes, and standard Gaffrig GPS
speedometers (26' and up), as well as a painted dash panel option that replicates the exterior graphics on the gauge panel and glovebox.
Speaking of graphics, there are several hot
new paint packages offered for 2004, and custom graphics are available upon request.

The 38 ZR is a study in focused, straightforward design, where form follows function and
the results are sensational. In its inaugural
year on the APBA circuit, the 38ZR won the
2002 National Championship in the Factory II
class, and folowed up that performance by not
only repeating as the 2003 Factory II National
Champions, but taking the coveted Super Vee
championship as well.
Initially designed for offshore racing competition, the ZR is available to the public in a fiveseat poker run configuration. Her ergonomic
cockpit faci I itates seam less interaction
between driver and machine, from easy-toread Gaffrig instrumentation to strategically
placed grab handles and footrests. Speciallydesigned seats hold driver and occupants
securely in place, and available intercom system and forced-air cockpit ventilation further
refine the experience.
The ZR exhibits such balance, speed, and phenomenal handling that Powerboat Magazine
stated " it would be difficult to find a better Vbottom" when they named it their "Offshore VBottom Boat of the Year" for 2003.
The ZR is the first boat designed by Donzi's
Custom & Racing division, and as such,

Donzi's ZF line of high-performance center consoles are synonymous with great looks, proven
performance, and unmatched versatility. While
they are indeed hardcore fishing machines, the
ZF's are just as comfortable cruising, enterta ining,
or just leaving everything else in their wake as
they are dominating the competition in offshore
fishing tournaments.
Our rugged ZF's are built to last. Beneath their
glossy exteriors are multiple layers of hand-laid,
stitched glass and viny lester resin, cored hullsides, and beefy, stress-absorbing composite
stringer systems. Top-of-the-line marine-grade
hardware is used throughout and thru-bolted
with locking nuts into oversized backing plates.
Donzi uses soldered, heat-shrink connections
and waterproof Packard connector plugs to seal
wiring harnesses from the elements. All electrica l
switches are illuminated, weather-resistant, and
circu it breaker protected. Upholstery is crafted
from durable, marine-grade viny l, triple-stitched
and wrapped over weatherproof backing materials. Finally, Donzi's gelcoat finish and choice of
available custom painted graphics is second to
none.
Combine the ZF's construction features with the
proven Donzi Z-Tech ventilated hull design, and
the result is an offshore center co nsole that is
solid, stable, nimble and fast. Features like wide
consoles with full-height windscreens, dropdown standup seating, wraparound cockpit bolsters and we ll -placed grab rails insure a comfortable ride for everyone onboard.
The ZF's are loaded with fishing features: large,
insul ated, overboard-draining fishboxes, generous livewells with high-volume pumps, ample
rod holders, large removable coolers, and integrated tackle boxes. Yet, at the same time these

"Sweet 16" in early 1964, inspiring an

From their rakish, low-slung looks to their
"tuck & roll" upholstery, we've kept all the
details true to the original blueprint. With
classic lines and inimitable styling cues,
with one glance everyone knows she's a
Donzi. Yet, don't be fooled- great looks are
only half of the story. With their unique
combination of vintage hull design paired
with ample power, today's Classics offer
white-knuckle thrills and a high-speed ride
like nothing else on the water!
For 2004 we're commemorating our heritage with the 40th Anniversary Edition
Classics. Available on all three Classic models, the Anniversary Editions come in brilliant Donzi Yellow, with special gauges &
upholstery, 1960's-vintage logos, a special
hull identification number and matching
commemorative dash plaque, and more.
Designed to be as recognizabl e as the
model line they commemorate, these guaranteed collector's items will be offered for
2004 only.
The Donzi Classics aren't for everyone those who prefer to go unnoticed are best
advised to move along. But for those who

could apply to any Donzi model, they truly
define Donzi's 39ZSC. Immersing its occupants
in lavish style and a level of quality that surpasses anything the competition has to offer, the
39ZSC would be a winner even if she didn't
boast honest 60 mph performance and uncharacteristically nimble handling.
It's no wonder the 39ZSC earned the distinction
of being named Powerboat Magazine's 2003
"Sport Cruiser of the Year". From the outstanding ergonomics afforded by her superb helm layout, to a cockpit featuring ample wraparound
seating and wetbar, all the way to the foredeck
sunpad with integrated headrest, the 39ZSC's
layout invites its occupants to stretch out and
relax. Down below, she offers lustrous cherryfinish cabinetry, designer fabrics, standard air
