LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Greetings fellow Saanen lovers,
It is hard to believe that 2013 is here, and many of you will have already begun kidding while some of us still have to patiently
(or impatiently) wait to see what our does will bless us with this kidding season.
I want to take this opportunity to say Thank You to Betty Henning for having done such a wonderful job as the Newsletter
Editor for the past few years. Despite her busy schedule she always managed to find the time to get this done for the NSBA.
If you see her out and about be sure to tell her “Thanks!”.
Stories, photos and membership brags are welcome to be included in the Saanen News Quarterly. If you have anything to
submit please email it to amy@keach.us or you can always snail mail information to me as well and I will do my best to fit it in.
If you are interested in becoming the Full Time Permanent Newsletter Editor please contact Marilyn Grossman or myself.
Happy Kidding,
Amy Keach

Greetings to All!
This is an exciting issue with our All American winners and our Linear Appraisal and One Day Test Recognition winners.
Please take a look to see who is out there excelling with their goats. Congratulations to all! Our Specialty Show sites for
2013 are listed in this issue. Please note where a Specialty Show will be sponsored near you so that you can have your
moment in the spotlight.
It’s a new year here at NSBA with a new slate of officers. Thank you to those who have worked in the past and welcome to
our new volunteers. We are looking forward to a very productive year. Most of our committees now have chairs and are
ready to go to work. We are still looking for someone with a keen interest in Saanen History who would like to work to
compile our breed history. If this is your interest, please contact me to volunteer. We are also looking for a Newsletter
Editor. At this point, Amy Keach is doing both the newsletter and the web site. Thank you, Amy! It is too much work for one
person to do both. If you like to be our Newsletter Editor, please contact me.
We have purchased a new digital photo display for our NSBA display at nationals and convention. We’d like to include
photos from all our members. Please see the announcement in this issue to see how you can participate.
One of the first issues pressed upon our new officers was a request from the Sable Association for support of their effort to
overturn the vote by the ADGA directors to stop the migration of off color Saanens directly to the Sable herdbook. Starting
January 2015, those kids will go to the Experimental Registry. The Sable folks will have had a full decade to draw upon
Saanen genetics to fill their gene pool. The new rule will treat Saanens and Sables in the same manner as the other
recognized full sized breeds. After a discussion with our NSBA board of directors, we decided that with the diversity of
opinion of our membership, that we should not, as an association, take a stand on this issue. Our members are free to join
the movement by joining ISBA.
Kidding season is underway in most parts of the county. Good luck to each of you! May your barn be full of pretty does and
high hopes for the future!
Yours in Saanens,
Marilyn Grossman, NSBA President
In the next few weeks you will see the NSBA Website
undergo a complete make-over.
Please make sure to check it out around the middle of March.

PRESIDENT
Hi! My name is Marilyn Grossman. I was born and raised on a farm in western Pennsylvania, and have lived in West
Virginia for the last 16 years. This year marks 30 years of dairy goats for Brad and me. During the years we were in
Pennsylvania, we had a dairy with a raw milk license, fudge-making permit, and a farm store. We've been on DHIR test,
participated in linear appraisal 15 times, and have shown our Saanens in PA, WV, OH and KY. We've had 30 Permanent
Champions to our name. Some we finished, and some we sold as kids and other folks earned the championships. Most
important of all, we have enjoyed the lifestyle of goatkeeping. It adds a gentleness to life to have creatures who appreciate
something as simple as a scratch on the chin or a warm bucket of water to bookend our days. I have been NSBA president
for 10 of the last 15 years. I appreciate your continued support!
VICE PRESIDENT
I am honored to be able to represent you as Vice President. Our family consists of my military husband, our 2 boys
(Matthew, 16 yrs old and Andrew, 12 yrs old), 3 dogs, 2 cows, 1 horse, 1 snake, pet rats, fish and of course the goats!
Like most, we started with Dairy Animals just wanting some milk for the family. That turned into wanting to show and
while I LOVED the ER does that got us started they were not show quality. So off I began on a hunt for what is now our
“starter herd”. 2012 was a wonderful year . I finished our first 2 of 4 milkers GCH does and many of our first homebred’s (dry stock) won their restricted legs. The farm also was on Standard DHIR-20 with all milkers earning their stars
and we will be a host herd at our farm this year for Linear Appraisal. The family is active in 4H, the Kentucky Goat
Producers Association and of course NSBA. All of us look forward to seeing more of you out on the road this year at
local shows, the ADGA National Show or at Convention and if you have any questions or comments, please do not
hesitate to contact me.
Amy Keach
SECRETARY/TREASURER
When I agreed to run for NSBA Secretary Treasurer over 10 years ago, I didn’t think I would still be doing it today! Time
flies, and 2013 marks the 20th year with Saanens. Started in California, my husband and I now live in a small mountain
town in Northern New Mexico where we have a small herd and farm along with working outside jobs.

INTRODUCTIONS FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
DISTRICT I
Hello: My name is Cecile Beauchemin and I thank everyone who voted for me. How do you compress 55 yrs in dairy goats into a few words? The
fourth daughter of a family of five girls, that explains the reason for my herds' name Daughter’s Farm. I've had Saanens for over 50 yrs. , starting at
a 9 years. old as the first 4H'er ,in Whindham county, to have dairy goat's as a project . As we live 5 miles from the Rhode Island line, I have been
an active member of the Rhode Island Dairy Goat Asso. for over 40 yrs, I have held ,at one time or another, every office in that association, and am
currently the secretary and newsletter editor, and several year back was on the ADGA A.I. committee.
I live in the house I was born in. I worked 41 yrs as a staff nurse on a medical/surgical unit in a local general hospital, retiring several years ago.
DISTRICT II
Hi my name is Janice Kessler. I am now and have been your D2 Director for 6 years. I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland but have lived
most of my life in Pennsylvania. We have live on our farm in Dover, Pa for almost 30 years. We raise pigs and steers for just our family. We Started
first with horses and a few goats for pets but the goats have taken over our lives now so the horses are no longer here. In 1993 we became interested in improving our Saanen by buying good bucks. In 1995 we became interested in showing, linear appraisal, and milk testing. In 1997 we purchase two does that would turn our breeding program around. After that we invested in quality bucks that have produced many animal that have L/A
90 to 92, received their stars, and SG and SGCH. I have raised other breeds but only have Saanens and a few sables now. My true love are
Saanens!!! I am also currently the: NSBA Linear Appraisal chairman for 10 years; Maryland Dairy Goat Assoc Treasurer for 7 years & Maryland
Dairy Goat DHIA Treasurer for 14 years
Janice Kessler
DISTRICT III
I am Terri Sines, your District III NSBA representative. I am a native New Yorker from upstate NY in the beautiful Catskill Mountains. We currently
live In Mebane, NC. We moved south just two years ago to escape the bitter snow and cold of the NY winters.
I have been raising dairy goats since 1988. My passion has been Lamanchas for most of my dairy goat raising years, but we recently added
Saanens. We have considered adding the beautiful "white goat" for several years, but I wasn't sure if we wanted to have a second breed. Finally,
we took the plunge in 2010 and couldn't be happier.
Our herd name is Majenli, a combination of my three children's names, Matt, Jennifer and Lisa. The kids (especially the girls) were involved with
showing the goats in 4-H and open shows for many years, and did a pretty outstanding job!
Since our children have all flown the nest now, we decided we have more time to dedicate to the goat world. We enjoy attending ADGA
conventions. We have not yet shown at an ADGA National show, but have been encouraged to get our girls out to get noticed! Perhaps we will go
to Louisville in 2014 :). We do try to get to at least a few local shows every year and have been pretty competitive with our animals. Currently we
have approximately 20 goats (until kids start arriving again this spring).
Don and I both have full time jobs off the farm. I work at ARMC Cancer Center as a medical coder and Don works at Leggett & Platt as purchasing/
materials manager. Between us we have six children and nine grandchildren with two more on the way. Family is our number one hobby! We also
are NASCAR enthusiasts (getting out to enjoy 2 or 3 races each year), and we enjoy running, hiking and kayaking.
DISTRICT IV
My husband, David and I live in eastern Indiana and have been raising Saanens for about 20 years. At the present time, we have about 90 animals
in the herd. I have been a 4-H leader for 6 years, involved with the Indiana State Fair for 17 years, active member of the Indiana Dairy Goat Assn
for 18 years, and a past member of the Indiana Livestock Board. The herd has been on official milk test since 1999, and on the Scrapie Certification
Program – Export Status since 2008. We try to attend as many local shows as possible as well as the ADGA National Show.
Teena Spear
DISTRICT V
Hi, I am Danny Loftus, Director of District 5. My wife Sue and I live in Bellevue, NE, on 2 acres. We have been married for 45 years. We have 2 sons
and 1 daughter. We are lifetime members of ADGA. We have raised Saanens for many years. All of our blood lines are Cherrypines. We really love
these white beauties.
If you ever have a problem, or question, please feel free to call or email. Either myself or Sue would be more than happy to help.
Thank you

NSBA has purchased a digital display frame for use at national events. We will be setting this up for 2013
and need your help! Each member, as a benefit of membership can submit a herd photo following the
example below. But we would like more! So read through the guidelines below and submit!
Formats need to be:
Photos = JPG
Vidoes = MPEG-4/AVI
NSBA Digital Display – Photo/Video Submission Guidelines
We are asking for images or very short videos from our members to display at national events in a digital
frame format. There are a few submission guidelines.
 For all pictures, the name, address, phone number, and email address of the person submitting
the images must be included. This information will not be made public, but is for our
records only.
 We would like to have one farm/herd picture from each member. Please include the Herdname if
not included on the photo. It, along with your state will be included with the photo.
 All pictures or videos should be submitted by e-mail. Photos mailed in will not be accepted nor
returned.
 All photographs submitted via e-mail are still the property of the photographer. NSBA is granted
the right to use copies of the image on this display in any manner without compensation.
 The larger the picture, the better. Please do not reduce the image size before submitting it.
 Indicate which gallery the photo or video should appear with. Sections are:
o Herd Photo (1 per membership)
o Saanens and youth
o Saanens at work (dairy, cart, etc.)
o Saanens at play (shows, candid, etc.)
o Historical Saanens (pre 1960)
 The person submitting the images must be a member of NSBA.
 Recent photos must be submitted by the photographer or by someone who has prior permission
from the photographer to submit them, and must be the photographer's original work.
 Anyone submitting a images where a living person can be identified must submit a release form
signed by the person or persons in the photo.
 Historic photos may be submitted by anyone as long as there is no current copyright on the
photograph.
 Photographs containing a photographer's watermark or other copyright may not be submitted.
 Do not submit any images that would be offensive in nature.
 NSBA will select the photos/videos to use in the display (other than the herd photo) and
retains the right to collate, crop or brighten the images if needed – but will not photoshop!
