no strangers to Steinway Hall,
one of New York’s most elegant
and prestigious musical venues.
And, of course, Third Street students have
long enjoyed the fun of playing in a piano
ensemble during the School’s popular
summer program. So it is with great
pleasure that we announce a new partnership between Steinway Hall and Third
Street Music School Settlement, open to
children and adults from all over the
metropolitan area, to experience the joys
of group music-making. Held at Steinway
Hall on Tuesdays for adults and Saturdays
for children, these ensembles provide
opportunities to play in every configuration
imaginable: four-hands one-piano, four-hands
two-piano, eight-hands two-piano, etc.
With the beautiful new pianos, fascinating
historical memorabilia and rehearsal and
performance spaces available at Steinway
Hall, the possibilities seem endless.

Ensemble participants are grouped by
skill level and receive expert coaching
from Third Street’s experienced and
distinguished faculty as they explore music
from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and
contemporary eras in addition to jazz and
popular music idioms.
Other components of the Piano Ensemble
Program include: Master Classes with
renowned guest artists, such as Seymour
Bernstein and Polly Van Der Linde,
workshops on relevant topics and public
performances at Steinway Hall at the
end of each semester.
A distinguished group of artistic
advisors for the Piano Ensemble Program

Welcome to Third Street Music
School Settlement’s 116th
school year! Last year was a
year of many memorable events
including a terrific season of
faculty performances in the Artists Performance
Series; a spectacular Anniversary Luncheon at the
Metropolitan Club; the dedication of the School’s
second brand-new Steinway recital-hall piano; the
launch of the School’s redesigned Web site; and, of
course, lots of music and arts learning and amazing
student performances. Like me, I know that you’re
looking forward to another year full of music, dance
and visual arts.
We are delighted to welcome our new Director
of Programs, Shalisa Kline Ugaz, to Third Street.
Shalisa brings considerable experience in program
development and management as well as student,
parent, faculty and community relationship building.
Please stop by Shalisa’s office and welcome her to
Third Street. (You can learn more about Shalisa on
page 3 of this newsletter.)
Last spring, the Board of Directors and I initiated a
Program Review & Visioning Study to learn more
about Third Street’s current programs and how they
are meeting the needs of our community and to start
looking toward the future to ensure that the School
will continue to meet our community’s needs in the
coming years. We are very grateful to the more than
500 students, parents, faculty, staff, board members
and community representatives who participated in
the study. The board expects to complete the full
Program Review & Visioning Study by the end of
December and the results of that work will be
communicated broadly.
Finally, as the nation’s oldest community school of
music, and the one that created the model for many
other community music schools around the nation, I
have always been puzzled by the absence of historical
references in our building. Third Street has a rich and
vibrant history and, now, a new historical photo
collage, mounted in the vestibule of the Anna-Maria
Kellen Auditorium, will help us celebrate that history.
I hope that you will take a moment to look at the photos
and discover more about Third Street’s exciting past.

Kline Ugaz has served as Artistic
Director, Director of Alegre
Strings, String Department Chair
and Director of Strategic Initiatives and
Community Engagement at the Merit
School of Music in Chicago, Illinois.
Founded in 1979 and with a budget of
$6 million, Merit reaches 7,000 young
people at its new 40,000 square foot
state-of-the-art facility in Chicago’s West
Loop and nearly 90 locations throughout
the Chicago metropolitan area.
Shalisa founded Alegre Strings in 2001
in two of Chicago’s predominantly
Mexican-American neighborhoods, fusing
the Suzuki method with Latin American
folk music. Alegre Strings, which grew to
600 students and 8 faculty in one year,
later merged with Merit Music School and
is now one of Merit’s flagship programs.
At Merit, she was instrumental in preparing
the school for its move to its new facility
and led the efforts to develop curriculum
models for string instruction. She strongly
believes in providing everyone the
opportunity to achieve his/her full musical
potential and in removing all barriers to
participation in the arts.
Shalisa is a graduate of the University
of Wisconsin-Madison in violin performance. Named by the Chicago Sun Times
as one of “50 People Who Make Chicago
a Better Place” in 2009, Shalisa was also
a top 10 national finalist in the Energizer
Bunny “Keep Going Hall of Fame.”
Shalisa has expressed how excited she
is to join the Third Street family and to
work with the board, faculty, staff, students
and parents to help the School achieve its
mission. She began her responsibilities in
September, but will officially move to New
York at a later date with her husband,
Luis, and their two children, ages 4 and 7.

pianist. Joan Forsyth, Piano Department
Chair, is equally excited, “There is so
much wonderful repertoire for piano
duet and two or more pianos. Historically,
before music could be recorded, piano
ensemble music was a very important
idiom. Now, groups such as The Five
Browns have brought music for multiple
pianos back to the forefront and there is
excellent new material coming out. I can
hardly wait for our first Monster Concert!”

n June 9, 2010, Third Street celebrated the accomplishments of 40
graduating seniors at the annual Senior Night concert. Twentythree students performed pieces ranging from Baroque to
contemporary, classical to popular and Broadway. Highlights
included a few special ensemble performances: William
Douthit, guitar, Gabriella Flick, cello, and Hannah
Westerman, viola, performed “Black Orpheus” by Luiz
Bonfá. Andrew Chow and Ryan Hess performed a two-piano
arrangement of Chick Corea’s “Spain.” Leo Singer and Mary
Lou Francis performed “The Swan” from Carnival of the Animals
by Camille Saint-Saëns. At the end of the concert, students were
presented with a certificate of accomplishment, a Third Street
t-shirt and a copy of the Senior Book, a commemorative keepsake with a page dedicated to each of Third Street’s graduating
seniors. We hope to stay in contact with these new alumni, and all
alumni, for many years to come.

tella Fiorenzoli had her subway-inspired
music composition performed by the
New York Philharmonic on May 19,
2010 at Avery Fisher Hall.
Stella began her studies at Third Street when
she was just five years old as a piano student
of Susan Innamorato. At age 10, she became
interested in composition and began taking
classes with Nick Scarim. Now 17 and a senior
at LaGuardia High School, Stella continues
to shine in her musical studies as a composer
and pianist. The Philharmonic’s Very Young
Composer’s Program recently chose her piece
“Sixty-Sixth Center” to be played by the illustrious
New York Philharmonic, with maestro Alan
Gilbert conducting. A resident of Tribeca, Stella
said the piece was inspired by a broken bell on
the No. 1 train as the doors were closing at
66th Street. Stella says of hearing such an
amazing orchestra performing her work, “It was
so thrilling to hear them perform my piece. I
heard them rehearse it twice and it was great
to see the way they [New York Philharmonic]
work. It was really a oncein-a-lifetime experience.”
Stella hopes to continue
her studies in music at
either Juilliard or Columbia,
and thanks Third Street for
the training and inspiration
in her early musical education, “My experience
at Third Street was so important. If it was not
for the composition classes I took, I would not
be composing today.”

In the Spotlight
T
he Third Street Parents Association works directly with
Third Street faculty and staff to put forth initiatives
aimed at increasing school pride, community-connectedness and communication between the School, its
parents and its students. The volunteer-based group has
recently spearheaded the creation of Third Street merchandise
such as t-shirts, hats, bags and pens. New this year is the
start of Parent Orientation Meetings for new parents as well
as returning parents and an end-of-year All-School Picnic
and Fair. Please take a moment to note these upcoming
dates in your calendar:

its first End-of-Year, All-School Picnic
and Fair. Mark your calendars for

Program
Starting this fall, Third Street will begin
a partnership with the Young People’s
Chorus of New York (YPC) to teach
“Let’s All Sing” and “Young People’s
Chorus.” Young People’s Chorus of
New York is one of the world’s premier
choral programs for children and teens.
Founded more than 20 years ago by
Francisco Nuñez, who interestingly
acquired his first music teaching experience at Third Street, YPC’s choirs
perform around the world and have
met with wide critical acclaim everywhere they perform. This connection
with YPC provides many benefits for
students at Third Street, including
opportunities to audition for and join
YPC’s top concert choirs and travel the

Piano faculty member Roger Peltzman was
recently featured in a beautiful New York
Times article entitled Mother’s Savior: A
Revelation. The story was published on July
30, 2010 and tells a fascinating family story
involving Roger’s mother, Beatrice Peltzman
(née Stern), his uncle Norbert Stern, a concert
pianist, and Ghislaine Hennessey (née Bomhals)
the woman who helped hide Beatrice and
Norbert during the Holocaust. Although Norbert
lost his life while in Auschwitz, Mrs. Hennessey
would continue to help Beatrice go into hiding.

Cara Gargano, Dance Department Chair,
presented a paper on a panel entitled,
“Pedagogies of the Thinking Body: Theory and
Practice for the 21st Century” in Leicester,
England in June 2010. The paper explored
recent research in neuroscience and how this

Alumni Weekend& Concerto Concert
While Third Street has held a concerto concert for many years,
this year it will become part of what may beThird Street’s firstever Alumni Weekend. Festivities begin on Friday, March 4,
2011, with that evening’s Artist Performance Series concert
and conclude with Sunday’s Concerto Concert, featuring Third
Street student soloists and an orchestra comprised of students,
faculty and alumni. Weekend activities include tours of the
School, a luncheon, an afternoon orchestra rehearsal, a dinner

and theater) and how it also speaks to the
importance of the arts as a necessary aspect
of human well-being.
In June 2010, Edmund Arkus performed in
Japan at several chamber music concerts
with members of the Boston Symphony and
NHK Orchestras in Tokyo and Osaka. He
then performed solo and duo-piano concerts
in July 2010 in Ogaki and again in Osaka
and also gave a series of master classes in
Ogaki during his stay.
On returning to the USA in late July and
August, Edmund then performed 3 concerts

The performances included the Sextet, Oboe
Sonata and Flute Sonata of Poulenc, the
Caprice of Saint-Saens, as well as numerous
other works.
Piano Department Chair Joan Forsyth
performed at the Warebrook Contemporary
Music Festival in Vermont this summer. She
will be recording the piano works of Frank
Brickle as the recipient of a grant from the
National Endowment for the Arts this fall.

“Ludlow and Broome,” a bitter-sweet musical
comedy featuring music composed by Third
Street piano accompanist Arthur Abrams
with book and lyrics by Ruthy Rosen, was
performed in August 2010 in the Art Gallery
at the Tompkins Square branch of the New
York Public Library (NYPL). The musical
has had previous performances at the
Bloomingdale branch of the NYPL, the
Theater for the New City and the Tenafly,
New Jersey, Jewish Community Center.

scholarships and free instruction valued at more than $750,000.
• First-time access to music and the arts for school children
through 26 Public School Partnerships.
• Comprehensive training in music for more than 300 students
through chamber and ensemble programs.
• Cultural enrichment for the community through more than 200
free-to-the-public concerts and recitals at Third Street and at
other venues around the city.
• Life-long learning opportunities and social connectedness to
175 adults through music lessons, chamber music, performance
workshops, movement classes and New Horizons Band and
Chorus programs.
