The Waking Crew can be heard on Country 102.9 each weekday from 5am to 10am. If you don’t get out early, let me just say I am always AMAZED how many people are out in the wee morning hours already starting their day! There is a crowd of people who wake up early and jump start our communities so they run smoothly as the masses start their days. (Thank you pre-dawn workers!) When I get to work, it’s pretty routine for me. I fire up the laptop, check forecasts and get stuff together for the show. While Rod is getting news ready, I’m looking for fun or interesting stories and events happening around the world, nation, state and county. By time I get that done, we are up and rolling and it’s time for our first news cast. 6:20am arrives very quickly! We get news and weather done and then it’s time for my favorite part of the morning… I take that walk down the hall for my first cup of coffee of the morning. Ahhhh that hits the spot! I have a little time to do a little more digging for show content during the 6am hour but phone calls begin coming in with birthday names for the 7:50am Birthday Show. So by time we hit 7am we are running full blast. The 7am hour is always a blur. You really don’t even get to hear much of the music because there is so much happening behind the scenes. It’s fun when things are busy. Contests, phone calls, guests… It makes each day new and different. I really miss taking my kids to school, so I will try to video chat with them on the computer when I can to tell them to work hard and have a good day. Country 102.9/My 93.1 • 20th Anniversary Special Edition • Nov/Dec 2010 1 From 7am until we do the Birthday show at around 7:55am it feels like a sprint. By 8am we have pretty much helped people with that morning rush to get kids to school and get to work and I really begin to settle into the day and we run smoothly until 10am. At 10am I shift gears to another fun and interesting part of our business. I get to work with businesses on their advertising. We talk marketing and how to grow their business. Growing up in a family owned business, I have always been really interested in marketing and how to grow businesses. So marketing and online marketing are passions of mine. My day begins to wrap up at 5pm. I come back in the radio station and have some studio work to do. I will do some recording until about 7:30 or 8p and by then I’m ready to get home and eat and play with the kids. It’s busy but it’s fun. After a great day of work and some quality family time, I thank the Lord for a good day, pray for good rest and get ready to do it again the next day. Shopping for Christmas gifts during the holiday season can bring great joy to the end of a hectic year. However, the season in celebration of the birth of Christ brings out thieves and stalkers waiting for the right moment to steal your goodies. And there are many things you can do to protect yourself and your Christmas packages this holiday season. • Someone who does not have their car keys ready. Shoppers, especially women should always use caution when shopping especially in parking lots. Pepper spray can be easily purchased on the Internet. There are models that will attach to your key chain or fit in a purse or pocket. A study that was recently conducted states that grocery store and mall parking lots are two very common places where shoppers are most vulnerable. And nearly all incidents involve women. It is notable to mention some women are more likely to be targeted than others. And the way you walk or even dress can make you an easy target. Such tells include: • A woman who is looking down. • Those who forget where they parked. When in the parking lot keep these basic tips in mind: • When parking only decide on an area that is very well lit, and close to the stores exit door. • Take note of the area where you have parked the car, so you are not wandering around hunting for your car when you are done shopping. • Never leave a store without concealing all cash and credit cards. • When going to your car look for strange people or vehicles, namely vans in the area. • You should have your purse securely placed under your arm, and have your pepper spray ready; not buried in your purse. • And as always if you shop at multiple places secure your packages in the trunk of your car and not in an area easily visible to a thief. All of us at Eagle Radio want you to be safe during the Christmas shopping season. But for children who visit downtown Hutchinson on Saturdays in December, houses are not built with hammers and nails. They are made of graham crackers and candy! Gingerbread houses at Christmas have been a tradition for years. Giving kids the opportunity to create one of their own began in downtown Hutchinson in 2007. Downtown Hutchinson will give kids an opportunity to express their creativity again this year. While decorating is a lot of fun for the kids, it takes hours of preparation by volunteers to make the event successful. “We start the season with 500 houses, and build more as needed” said Paula Payton, Chairman of the Downtown Hutchinson Christmas Committee. “That’s 2500 graham crackers and mountains of frosting to glue them together!” The Keebler Co/Kroger Central Region, Hutch office donated the graham crackers, Allie’s Deli helps secure supplies for the special frosting cement, Daylight Donuts has large mixers, and Hutch Rec supplies the location. Then all the little houses have to be assembled before the frosting hardens! Thanks to R.S.V.P volunteers and employees from downtown businesses who donate their time, the work gets done. It takes hours to break the crackers, (hopefully into the right shapes) apply frosting, and hold them in place while the frosting sets. They are then set aside to dry on racks provided by the Sara Lee Bakery. Some of the candy is supplied through community donations; the rest is purchased by Downtown Hutchinson. “Watching kids faces light up with excitement as they decorate their gingerbread houses makes it all worthwhile”, says Payton, “but it wouldn’t happen without the help of a lot of volunteers! We are grateful to everyone who helps make it a fun event for the kids!” Gingerbread House Decorating is free for kids every Saturday in December before Christmas from 11am – 2pm at Hutchinson Recreation Commission, 17 East 1st. Donations of candy or cash for supplies is welcome and appreciated and may be dropped off at Hutch Rec or the Eagle Media Center at 9th and Main. 11 12 Country 102.9/My 93.1 • 20th Anniversary Special Edition • Nov/Dec 2010 A Christmas Bible Quiz I think it is safe to say that one of the most celebrated days of the year in our country is Christmas. It is such a popular holiday that often those not of the Christian faith participate in the festivities. It is also safe to say that this day is widely celebrated around the world, even in cultures that are not Christian in culture or persuasion, such as Japan and China. They too call it “Christmas.” There are myriad examples we could site regarding the world’s commercialization of this sacred Christian holiday and the loss of festive understanding, but too often we Christians come up short ourselves in this theological arena. As our Lord said, sometimes we need to remove the beam from our own eye. How much do you really know about Christmas? Regular check ups and cleanings on your teeth can prevent costly dental work. A flu shot can protect you from a serious illness. The same principle applies to your home heating and air conditioning system. Inefficient heating and cooling systems needlessly consume extra energy and raise utility bills. “Since we began offering our home maintenance programs, we’ve seen a substantial drop in the number of emergency calls needed by our customers,” said Ben Timberlake, service manager of Temp-Aire Inc. in Lyons and Hutchinson. Our maintenance programs include a precision tune up and professional cleaning twice a year. Plus, if repairs are needed, we offer a discount on parts and labor throughout the year. The cost of a home maintenance program is only pennies a day, but provides homeowners with a lot of peace of mind.” No matter what type of heating and cooling system you have, there are several things you can do to keep your system in top condition. Dirt is the biggest enemy of your home’s heating and cooling system. It can waste fuel and drastically lower efficiency. Dirt affects all three basic components of the system, so cleaning is the most important part of regular maintenance. Lubrication and belt adjustment of the furnace are also important. If you’re not so handy, you may prefer to contact a professional about a home maintenance program. Replacement of heating and air conditioning systems can be costly, but a well maintained system operates more efficiently, suffers fewer breakdowns, and lasts longer. In the long run, a little preventative maintenance will save you money and the discomfort of going without heat on a cold winter night. Ben was right! An ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure. Edward Jones ranked “Highest in Investor Satisfaction with Full Service Brokerage Firms,” according to the J.D. The church would be full of relatives, near and far. When my boys were growing up, we always spent Christmas Eve with my husband’s parents. Each year, the boys’ gifts would always include a new pair of pajamas. It is something they came to anticipate... and it also made the Christmas morning pictures look a little better in their new pajamas. My aunt and uncle always traveled from northern Minnesota, no matter the weather. Before the program, we were allowed to open one gift from them. It would be our new Christmas outfit to wear in the program. (always a good surprise and usually was a pretty good fit) The front corner of the church was reserved for a huge Christmas tree that reached the ceiling that our fathers had personally chopped down. After the program, the children handed out hundreds of gifts from under the tree to the people in the congregation. These were gifts from one family to another. Later, I learned that once in awhile there was a family forgotten. In that case, a church leader or two rushed home to return with one of their own gifts from under their own tree and quickly renamed for the forgotten person. Christmas Recipe: Ginger Cookies (this is similar to the recipe passed down from my Norwegian great-grandmother) 2 ¼ c. flour ¼ c butter 2 tsp. Baking soda 1 c. sugar ¼ tsp. Salt 1 egg 1 tsp. Ginger ¼ c mild molasses ½ tsp. Cinnamon ½ tsp ginger, minced ½ c shortening Cream shortening and butter with sugar. Add egg and molasses and mix well. Mix in dry ingredients. Form into one-inch balls and roll them in sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for about ten minutes. Christmas Memories: Some of my favorite Christmas memories revolve around Christmas programs at the church. My youngest son was about six, and as the children’s choir was singing, he began to use the microphone stand as a telescope...scanning the crowd till he found me...then smiled a big toothless grin and waved. Another program was a contemporary look at the Bethlehem story. My middle son, seventeen at the time, was dressed as a soldier and came out of the dark carrying a lantern singing ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ acapella. We didn’t know that the very next year he would be called up to serve by the National Guard and spend Christmas in Iraq. I will always remember the year my oldest son played the resurrected Christ at a musical that included the birth, life and resurrection of Jesus. The church was dark except for the singers on stage...then the baptistery curtain opened and the halogen lights were so bright, you could only see a blinding white light for a few moments until your eyes adjusted. He stepped out of the light with arms outstretched. Christmas recipe: Spicy Cheeseburger Soup 1½ cups water 2 cups cubed, peeled potatoes 2 small carrots, grated 1 small onion, chopped ¼ cup chopped green pepper 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 1 TBSP beef bouillon granules ½ tsp. Salt 1 lb. Ground beef, cooked, drained 2 ½ cups milk, divided 3 TBSP all-purpose flour 8 oz. Process American cheese, cubed ¼ to 1 tsp. Cayenne pepper, optional ¼ lb. Sliced bacon, cooked, crumbled In a large saucepan, combine the first nine ingredients; bring to boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Stir in beef and 2 cups of milk; heat through. Combine flour and remaining milk until smooth; gradually stir into soup. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened and bubbly. Reduce heat; stir in cheese until melted. Add cayenne if desired. Top with bacon just before serving. Yield: 6-8 servings. It can employ both action and strategies and can be made as complex as you please, according to the age group of your guests. You can add interesting clues, riddles and hints to help guide your guests to the location of one of the objects. The child, who manages to collect most items at the end of the party, will of course be the winner. Monday and Tuesdays are busy around here because something is ALWAYS going on with promotions. Those 2 days we spend planning and organizing our station events. So, I get to go to meetings! Along with promotions, I also program the station’s music for the following 7 days. I want to be careful to select the right music for you…… so I take time to think it through. This entails making the decisions on what to start or stop playing on the air, loading new music into the computer and creating the music schedule for the next week. After that, I’m already thinking about my radio show. What to talk about, what to promote and what YOU’RE thinking about. It can consume my thinking since it’s important part of my job. A typical ‘Day in the Life’ for me starts everyday I get up at 4:30am. To get my bearings straight I turn on the local TV stations to get the latest news and sports. It’s then off to work when I usually get to the station around 5:30. Yet there’s more prep before I go on the air so I read mulitple newspapers and additional information that is sent to us. That helps me get a basic outline of what’s ‘on tap’ for that day’s show. Some days after reviewing the material I’ve read, I will throw the outline away, go with a subject of the day and let the listeners take over. Those days are the BEST! Often they can be very entertaining because I’m not sure where the flow of the show will go...especially when the listeners call and get involved. They’re great...we have terrific listeners. By the time 10 o’clock gets here, I’m usually fatigued. So it’s break time before the afternoon of producing commericials. So, I usually go home and take a lunch break. After I shove some groceries, take a short nap, then I get up to catch the local news and weather. I’m interested in what’s going on and am also looking for additional information that I can prep for tomorrow’s show. I usually amble back to work at 12:30. When I get back to the station, I’ll continue to go over notes from the days show, look to find something I missed and note it to use the next day. Then my second job begins, meeting customers and producing commercials. Somedays are very busy..........some clients will do their own spots and others I will voice. What’s an interesting facet of this job is the kind of people I have the opportunity to meet. From dentists to gardeners and mechanics to retailers, we get to meet all kinds of people from all walks of life. Very enjoyable! Like all businesses, sometimes there are slow days. When those come, I usually get on-line and visit major market stations web pages. Sometimes they have really good ideas so I’ll “borrow” some of their stories that I missed during the morning. Of course, there are days I will meet with the sales executives to discuss to find out how I can help them. Around 4:30 I head to my upscale west Hutchinson abode where I’ll usually take a walk, play golf or visit with the neighbors cat. I feel blessed to have a job where I can sit and talk, play music and get paid for it. The best part of the whole day is the feedback from listeners like you! When somebody comes up to me and says “Hey that was funny or that really made me think” then it makes my job that much more worthwhile. I think the best thing a person can say is “you made me feel better today.” 27 28 Country 102.9/My 93.1 • 20th Anniversary Special Edition • Nov/Dec 2010 Holiday Moderation Or Excess Christmas Cookies, Traditions And Memories Annie Campbell – Account Executive My 93.1/KHMY-Country 102.9/KHUT Holiday Tradition: My mom starting making this drink at Thanksgiving about five years ago (because of its fall festive colors) but I think it can be adapted to the Christmas season. Hats Off To A Nite At The Races Elegant hats are adjusted, the bets are down, the gates open and the horses are off and running! It’s not the Kentucky Derby, but ‘A Nite at the Races’ gives participants an opportunity to experience the excitement of horse racing in the middle of winter in Hutchinson. While there are many fund raisers in Hutchinson, Community Finance of Kansas has chosen this program to sponsor because they have seen first hand the impact the Red Cross has had on this community. “Our local Red Cross does more than accept blood donations. They provide relief for local families who have suffered loss during house fires. They offer many local health and safety classes, and can assist with emergency communication for military families,” said Denise Hallman, of Community Finance. “These programs affect our customers, so we’re thrilled we can sponsor this event! Plus, it’s a lot of fun!” This is the 4th year the Reno County American Red Cross has hosted ‘A Nite at the Races’ and the enthusiasm continues to grow! “We bring in video of real horse races that have been pre-recorded, so it’s a lot like being right there at the races” said Megan Gottschalk Hammersmith, director of the Reno County American Red Cross. “The ticket price includes funny money that can be used to place bets on the horses, and then winnings are paid based on the odds for each horse. People really get into it, cheering on the horses! We have a great time!” The evening also includes a silent auction and a live auction. Dinner is catered by Marcella’s. New this year is a Best Hat Contest and ladies are encouraged to wear a decorated derby hat. ‘A Nite at the Races’ is on January 22nd from 6:00 to 10:00 pm at Memorial Hall. Reserve tickets are $35.00 and may be purchased by calling the Red Cross office at 662-3336. Tickets can also be purchased at Hayes Sight and Sound, Ostara’s, and All That Jazz. During such traumatic times, the Center provides items that a child finds comforting and familiar. “When we first learned about the Children’s Crisis Center, we knew it was a good fit for the Linus Project,” explained B.J. Parsons, owner of Midwest Sewing and Vacuum Center of Hutchinson “A group of us meet each month to sew blankets. Others make them at home and drop them off at the store. Sewing pillowcases is a newer development. The kids enjoy having their own pillowcase, and they can be filled with items the children take with them. It’s great to know the items we make fill a real need for local children,” said B.J. To learn more about the Linus Project or to donate materials or help with the sewing, contact Midwest Sewing and Vacuum at 211 West 5th in Hutchinson. Donations of cleaning supplies, toys, food or cash are also welcomed and appreciated. Advent Conspiracy What would happen if a group of people actually made a small sacrifice during the Christmas season and pooled their resources together to make life better for another group? That’s what the congregation of South Hutchinson Mennonite Church asked themselves a few years ago; their question led them to cooperate with a group of other concerned churches in a movement called “Advent Conspiracy.” During SHMC’s first advent of participation (2008), members gave one less gift to loved ones. With a value of $30 per gift, the church was able to help dig five clean water wells in a Third World area, resulting in thousands of people experiencing clean drinking water for the first time. encouraged to eat two of their meals per week consisting only of a small amount of rice and beans provided by several local businesses during the four weeks of Advent. The meal money saved was sent to MEDA. The Canadian government matched the $32,000 raised. “This really raised the community awareness of the situation for women in Afghanistan. After the business woman is able to pay back the loan, the money will automatically be sent to another pending entrepreneur,” Eric says. Last year’s project for “Advent Conspiracy” challenged members to raise money for Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA). The specific project invested in micro-finance lending to Afghan women wishing to empower their own lives and start their own businesses. Eric Miller, Associate Pastor of SHMC says the congregation was This year (2010) South Hutchinson Mennonite Church is looking forward to helping the Hutchinson area during Advent. The Herald Angels Sing And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:8-14 Upon his conversion, Charles Wesley immediately began writing hymns, each one packed with doctrine, all of them exhibiting strength and sensitivity, both beauty and theological brawn. He wrote constantly, and even on horseback his mind was flooded with new songs. He often stopped at houses along the road and ran in asking for “pen and ink.” He wrote over 6,000 hymns during his life, and he didn’t like people tinkering with the words. In one of his hymnals he wrote: “I beg leave to mention a thought which has been long upon my mind, and which I should long ago have inserted in the public papers, had I not been unwilling to stir up a nest of hornets. Many gentlemen have done my brother and me (though without naming us) the honor to reprint many of our hymns. Now they are perfectly welcome to do so, provided they print them just as they are. But I desire they would not attemp to mend them, for they are really not able. None of them is able to mend either the sense or the verse. Therefore, I must beg of them these two favors: either to let them stand just as they are, to take things for better or worse, or to add the true reading in the margin, or at the bottom of the page, that we may no longer be accountable either for the nonsense or for the doggerel of other men.” But one man did the church a great favor by polishing up one of Charles’ best-loved hymns. When Charles was 32, he wrote a Christmas hymn that began: Hark, how all the welkin rings, “Glory to the King of kings; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; Universal nature say, “Christ the Lord is born to-day!” The word “welkin” was an old English term for “the vault of heaven.” It was Charles’ friend, evangelist George Whitefield, who, when he published this carol in his collection of hymns in 1753, changed the words to the now-beloved, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” The South Hutchinson United Methodist Church Rev. Tim Ault-Duell, Pastor Ave. E & Poplar So.
