AWS – Monthly Newsletter “FILLETS ‘n GROOVES” Northwest Section – American Welding Society Twin Cities, Minnesota June 23, 2008 Section Event Annual Golf Outing New Prague Golf Club Web Site www.AWS.org/sections/northwest/ April 2008 Hello again I would like to start out by recognizing some people that have contributed their time and efforts for the benefit of our section and the members. Bob Schuster from Nelson Stud Welding Co. organized and delivered an informative seminar in January. This was well attended and I received a lot of positive feedback. Thank you Bob! The picture on the front cover is (L to R) Don Merker, Keith Zelinga, and Bob Schuster all from Nelson Stud Welding. The Behind-the-Mask competition in February was also well attended and generated a fair amount of money for future scholarships and section business. You will see a letter from Pam Lesemann in this newsletter with more detail concerning the contest. Special thanks go out to Pam for her leadership in organizing this event and to the crew at the Anoka Technical College for hosting and providing an excellent venue. Thank you Lisa, Wayne, Jay, and Bob another great job. There are many more people that are instrumental in pulling off an event of this magnitude and I don’t have the space to recognize each of you individually, just know that you are appreciated and I thank you as well. There is something that I need to clear up that occurred after the last newsletter was sent out. An individual commented on the picture that was used on the cover of the newsletter. It appeared that this was one of those conditions where the person using the cutting torch could have been seriously injured or worse, killed. It is never a good idea to use a sealed barrel that may have held a flammable or unknown substance as a cutting surface due to the fact that is could explode. Safety is very important and one moment in a lapse of judgment could prove to be a huge mistake. I know for a fact that this was a safe condition but that does not justify the image this may have provided. I would ask all of you that are responsible for the supervision or training of people in our field to take an opportunity to review the proper safety measures in regards to cutting. Rest assured, the barrel was specifically manufactured for the purpose of cutting and all safety procedures were followed during the contest. I apologize for causing any concern with my selection of that picture and not providing a commentary on the conditions. I was however pleased that someone actually took the time to review the newsletter and provide feedback to me. This is the kind of support that the section needs and encourages. In closing, look for information concerning the golf outing that and if any of you are interested in becoming more involved with the section, I would welcome you to attend a meeting to meet some of us. We need your help and support. Remember to look to the website for information concerning the section events. It can be found at: www.AWS.org/sections/northwest/ Don’t forget the Welding Show is in Las Vegas this year in early October. I would suggest you make your plans early for this one.
