Petee A message from the Board Chair and Executive Director 2014 was truly a historical year for the Toledo Area Humane Society! We saved 3,932 animals, while working in a facility designed 33 years ago to accommodate fewer animals than we care for now. That number is a new shelter record, breaking last year’s mark. In 2014, we also reached milestones of our 75,000th adoption in our current shelter and our 200,000th overall! 2014 also saw the purchase of a pre-existing building that is substantially larger than the current facility. This building, located less than 2 miles from our current facility, will serve as the new home of the Toledo Area Humane Society for many decades to come. When it opens in June of 2015, we will go from 9,000 square feet of space to 17,500 square feet and from 2 acres to 5 acres, allowing for improved operations inside, room for future growth and, of course, lots of space for dogs to run and play outside! Our dedicated staff continued to do their life saving work with the wonderful help and support of 475 volunteers, strong board leadership, and with the financial support of thousands of people in the Toledo area and across the country. We truly thank each person who volunteers, adopts, fosters, donates and helps in whatever way they can. You all make a difference, and with your help 2015 will even be a better year for the animals! Heather Rohrs, Board Chair Gary Willoughby, Executive Director We save lives...and create SMILES. Whether you adopt at the Toledo Area Humane Society’s main location in Maumee, at one of our offsite adoption locations like Petco in Bowling Green, PetSmart in Rossford, or the TAHS ReTail Shop in Toledo, you came out in record numbers this past year. We also continued to work with our valuable transfer partners to find animals forever homes. Altogether, we broke our record again for lives saved! WE SAVED THE LIVES OF 3,932 ANIMALS FOSTURE FAMILIES MAKING A DIFFERENCE In 2014, we had over 200 foster families who helped us save the lives of countless underage, recuperating and under socialized animals. Thanks to the generous help and support from these families, we did not have to say goodbye to any animal due to space limitations. When the shelter reached full capacity, our foster families stepped up and graciously volunteered to open their homes to animals who were waiting to go up for adoption. Fostering is a 24/7 commitment and we are very thankful to have such dedicated families to help make a difference in the lives of these forgotten and abandoned animals. We love our foster families! WALK FOR THE ANIMALS BARK IN THE PARK Bark in the Park is one of the Toledo Area Humane Society’s largest fundraising events. This local, annual walk attracted over 2,000 walkers in 2014 and raised over $35,000 for animals in need. Participants were able to bring along their furry family members for a 1.5 mile journey around Arrowhead Park in Maumee. Special events support the mission ... METROBARKS FESTIVAL HUMANE HUSTLE 5K The Metrobarks Festival and Humane Hustle 5k Run/Walk were held at Swan Creek Preserve Metropark on June 7, 2014. The Toledo Area Humane Society supports healthier living for pets and their owners - there’s no better way than to get out and exercise! A FUN NIGHT OUT YAPPY HOUR EVENTS TAHS teamed up with local restaurants in the area to provide three Yappy Hour events in 2014. Animal lovers were given the opportunity to liven up their weeknights while helping out the animals in need. Guests were entertained by local musicians and dined on classic Toledo cuisine. Yappy Hour events were held at Bar 145, Capers Restaurant and Bar, and Sidelines Sports Eatery. FIFTH THIRD FIELD HENS AND HOUNDS NIGHT The Toledo Mud Hens partnered with the Toledo Area Humane Society and the Lucas County Canine Care and Control to host the 2nd Annual dog friendly night at Fifth Third Field. Dog owners were able to purchase a ticket for their dog and bring their furry companion to the game! 100% of proceeds from the dog tickets were divided between TAHS and LC4’s Cutie’s Fund. After the game, dogs and their owners were given the unique opportunity to walk out on the field for a dogs eye view of the event. PARTNERING WITH MEDIA TO SAVE MORE LIVES In 2014, the Toledo Area Humane Society was focused on finding new and unique opportunities to help promote our adoptable animals. Thanks to the generosity of our media partners such as Block Communications, The Blade, Buckeye Telesystems, Buckeye Cable, 92.5 KISS FM, K100, WTVG, WTOL, the Toledo Free Press, and Point and Shoreland Journal, we were able to get the word out about our adoptable animals to help them find their forever homes in a shorter amount of time. CELEBRITY CHEF EVENT PAW VILLION The 2nd annual Paw-Villion Celebrity Chef Event was held on October 17, 2014 at the home of Susan and Allan Block. Over 220 guests enjoyed a three course fine dining experience prepared by celebrity chef Susan Feniger. Preventing cruelty to animals... Photo courtesy of The Blade/Amy E. Voigt MAKING A DIFFERENCE CRUELTY DEPARTMENT The mission of the Toledo Area Humane Society is to lead the community in efforts focused on relieving the suffering of, preventing cruelty to, and providing for the humane treatment of animals. This has been a part of the mission of the organization since 1884 and is still the center of our organization today. The Toledo Area Humane Society employs two full-time Humane Agents to enforce animal cruelty laws in Lucas County. Officer Gene Boros and Officer Nancy Schilb investigate over 2,000 complaints a year. This year, the agents responded to 1,849 calls, down from 2,104 calls in 2013. From these calls, they were able to remove 618 animals from abusive situations, up from 487 animals in 2013. In 2014, TAHS removed animals from several different hoarding cases including a case that involved over 60 chickens, ducks, turkeys, dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs and horses. The shelter does not receive government funding, does not receive any United Way funding, and is not affiliated with any national humane organization. EVERY ITEM HELPS AT THE RETAIL SHOP The Toledo Area Humane Society’s new ReTail Shop celebrated its one year anniversary this past October with a visit from 101.5 The River’s Mary Beth Zolik. The 5,000+ square foot store, located on S. Byrne near Heatherdowns, offers furniture, clothing, jewelry, books, housewares, collectibles and much more. The shop, which operates 7 days a week, accepts donations of gently used items. These items are then sold to raise revenue for TAHS. This was our first full year being open and sales continue to climb as more people in the community become aware of this new way to give. The ReTail Shop sports an open adoption cat room and holds additional adoption events throughout the year, saving more lives, while building awareness of the store in the community. Donations come in all varieties! Besides our wonderful ReTail Shop, we now post some of our more collectible donations on eBay reaching more people around the country. Item donations accepted by TAHS are not limited to things just lying around the house! This past year, we had several cars and houses donated to TAHS. These larger items were auctioned off to the public and turned into much needed revenue for the animals. TAHS EDUCATED 2,245 STUDENTS The Toledo Area Humane Society believes the respect for all living things, including animals, begins with education. In 2014, 2,245 students participated in our staff and volunteer run education programs. Staff and volunteers gave 113 presentations in 2014 to adults and children on various topics including responsible pet ownership, safety around animals, prevention of dog bites, pet overpopulation, and the connection between animal abuse and human abuse. In addition to informational classes and presentations offered by TAHS, the community is educated through stories printed in our newsletters, web blogs, behavior helpline assistance and the interaction our cruelty officers have with our local community each day. Develop a passion for learning. Volunteering is a work of heart. The Toledo Area Humane Society was blessed to have 471 active volunteers in 2014. These volunteers provided an impressive 64,763 hours of their time and talents, almost 10,000 more hours than in 2013! TAHS volunteers help care for animals, assist with adoptions and events, make food deliveries and help out at our ReTail Shop. 64,763 HOURS 471 VOLUNTEERS Pet therapy leads to better health! Our dedicated pet therapy volunteers made 304 visits to senior facilities in 2014 and touched the lives of 12,160 seniors in Northwest Ohio. Nursing home and Senior care facility visits are proven to be therapeutic for senior residents, improving their mood and leading to better health.
